'Guitar Man' by Bread........... haunting tune.
one of my favs
My favorite.
Bread/David Gates. Great song writer, wonderful ,simple songs. Timeless
Dont forget the other great singer..Jimmy Griffin. Equally great just not singing the majority of Bread's songs which is a darn shame in my eyes! Look What You've Done and Just Say When for a start thx!!! ❤ p.s.both live plz
I can't believe that there are people who have never heard this song!! So glad you enjoyed it 🙂
His songs are always so sweet and melancholy ... many of them bring tears to my eyes.
Try the tunes Everything I Own, Make It With You, It Don't Matter To Me. All great songs by Bread...
Excellent choices. and for a heart wrenching tear jerker.. Diary.
Don't forget Guitar Man.
@@TwistedSither "Baby im a want you too
@@stephenulmer3781 So many great songs. Every one a classic.
@@cindys9858 Can't forget the tune, Aubrey....
It was a huge hit in the 70's, "If" and "Time in a Bottle" (Jim Croce) are still HUGE wedding songs.
True!
Its one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Its from 1971, Bread is a great band
Bread was a very big group in the 70's. My favorite song of theirs is Everything I own. They recorded some beautiful music. SO MANY MEMORIES !!!
Believe it or not, I saw Bread perform at a local carnival and they sang this and a few more. Long live those days.
This came from the era of peace and love. My wife of 42 years has always and will continue to be the love of my life. This came out when we were dating. We would sit in my 69 chevelle ss with the doors open listening to the 8track. Vowing to love one another to the end of time. We are still going strong with no end in sight. Love you sweetie 4 ever and always..😘😍
God bless you both with an eternity of love! Peace! ✌️
I wish there were men like you in my generation 😥 She is a lucky woman! Congratulations to both of you :)
God bless you two!
I love this ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the greatest soft-rock songs ever. And so much fun to play on the guitar. Lots of very interesting chords.
Bread was so awesome.
I grew up on Bread. I have their greatest hits in my van right now, and it's one of the few albums I rarely skip a track on.
My kids and I sing these songs together, in harmony.
Many nights locked up in my room feeling lonely and sorry for myself, all I had to comfort me were these love songs from the 70's.
u should come to live chat sometimes
This song was written for his father who he was closed to that passed away as well as the song everything I own
peteypete1216 I’ve never heard that “IF” was written about his dad...it’s widely known that “EVERYTHING I OWN” is written about his dad, but I didn’t think this one was.
@@susankeller4170 was listening to a documentary on David Gates when they talked about most people think that song is about a girl but its about his father whom he was very close to that passed away and it hit him hard as well as the song everything i own..time less songs that i can identify now with family that are gone..
@@susankeller4170 some like to stsrt an argument. jeez...
Jeanette Wyatt If my intention was to ‘start an argument’, I would have used inflammatory words.
The last sentence I wrote was “ I didn’t think this was”...that implies that I don’t know. If my intention was to argue I would have declared that I knew it wasn’t written about his father...but I don’t know that. It’s called a conversation.
@@susankeller4170 No the song you are thinking of is Everything I Own.
Nice.. mellow and soothing. Loved this group.
David Gates is one of those songwriters that got noticeably better over the years. There was a bit of jealousy in the band because he got all of the hits, but let's face it...he wrote the better songs. 'I Want To Make It With You', 'It Don't Matter To Me', 'Everything I Own' (about his deceased dad), 'Diary', 'Aubrey' (which I can't listen to without tears), 'Guitar Man', etc.
Fabulous Songs
Diary, by Bread is heartfelt and heartbreaking. One of my all time favorite songs. The twist at the end is so sad.
Aubrey...is my favorite of their songs...along with "IF"
Bread made some of the most beautiful songs ever...♡
This is before Disco. This is early 70s. Disco didnt really get big until after 1974.
First of all, I can't stop watching your videos. I've been watching for hours. Secondly, I canNOT believe I found a reaction to this song on UA-cam. Amazing. My mother always sang this to me as a baby/child, and for some reason, I always get misty eyed when I hear it.
When I want to see somebody cry, I play this for them. Never fails.
A tad sappy, though, pretty and sweet...
I love 'guitar man' by Bread... it's quite haunting and lovely...
" I Found Her Diary"- 6th grade sleepovers☺. "The Goodbye Girl"=High School movie date!
brainsareus The Guitar Man is ❤️
I first heard this song when I was 6. It was played at the end of a Hardy Boys show when Shaun Cassidy's character got heartbroken by a dumb girl! He was walking alone sad on the beach and they played this song. I asked who sang that song and from then until now I've been a huge fan!
My pastor growing up also loved Bread he'd go around his house singing Diary and Aubrey! Coolest pastor I've ever know! Much love JCJ!!
Beautiful song. Makes me cry, it's my parents song. I remember my father singing this to himself, my mom walking by and giving him a gentle kiss, smiling and walking away..
70s soft rock.
OMG this takes me baaaaack!! Bread was THE best music to listen to when you were lovesick or going through a break up! David Gates has such a beautiful voice, and wrote such gorgeous lyrics! There isn’t a bad song by Bread, “AUBREY” is the reason for so many babies being named Aubrey, “GUITAR MAN”, “EVERYTHING I OWN” (written about his father) “DIARY”....
I fell in love with this song when I first heard it and I had sang it at my sister’s wedding for her , yes this was back in the 70”s back when good music was coming out before disco scene hit
MRM is on a Roll tonite. Yes your doing Bread, This Band is a deep mine and your just now have started scrapping the Surface.
This song can be best described as a poem set to music. My English teacher in the 70's had our class focus on the poem, not the music. But so very powerful with music. This is especially evident at the point where Gates sings, "If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, I'd spend the end with you". I think you missed the power of the words in this song. As a kid, I know I missed it when I first heard it in 1971. But my oh my, does this song ever mean so much more to me once I allowed the words to drive.
I remember getting the best of Bread album for Christmas 46 years ago when I was 14 lol. What a great album it was I played it for years. Great memories, Thank you Ty. Donna
Donna, I had the same album, (46 yrs ago when I was 14!) only I stole it from my older brothers 😂! Still love it today!
@@unrulyjulie4382 lol that's too funny, my older brother yes to steal mine too, I'm still laughing... Donna
@@donna7881...I also used to steal their Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Association albums. I gave those back, but they let me keep the Bread album. LOL!
@@unrulyjulie4382 My all tim favorite has passed away :(
I have been to countless of his concert's "Tom Petty"
love love love his music. Donna
@@donna7881 ... I love and miss him too! My very favorite is Tom Petty's fellow Wilbury, Jeff Lynne, whom I sure you know produced and co-wrote Full Moon Fever with Tom. We have very good taste 👌😉
1971. It was my favorite song in HS and was played at my wedding.
Thank you for this great reaction to a timeless beautiful song :) . "Everything I own" is another Bread song that deserves a listen. He wrote it for his Father
Oh, sweet memories from my childhood. I love this song. I had an album (yes a real vinyl record) with this on it and would listen to it over & over (and of course sing along). Love the lyrics and the music is so soothing. I think it goes perfectly with the lyrics. Thanks for bringing back the sweet parts of my childhood ❤😊
Beautiful mellow love song...absolutely timeless. I’ve heard this song at a few weddings.
This song is a challenge to sing but so worth it. I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you listened kinetically. A song from the same group but with a different mood is Dismal Day. It describes some big parts of my life, and I am impressed with just how high Gates gets on it.
The Best of Bread, one of the first 8 track tapes I bought, when I installed a player in my car. Every song on it a beautiful gem, like this one.
Bread, one of my favourite all time bands, who sound as good today as they did then! Worth seeing live if you get the chance!
Elegant song by an elegant group. Good to see this one brought up for review/reaction. Beautiful piece.
David Gates had amazing songwriting skills. He wrote a ton of great songs, Guitar Man is probably Bread's most famous song, then he had others like Aubrey (my personal favorite), The Goodbye Girl (his biggest solo hit, which was made for the movie of the same name), Suite Clouds and Rain, among others.
I think "If" was their biggest hit. Aubrey was one of my favorites. In colege I thought I would like to name a daughter Aubrey.
I assume, my friend, that you are American because here in England their greatest hits were "Make It With You " ( which is in my All-Time Top 20 Songs since buying my first record in 1960 ) and " If". and " Baby I'm A Want You " and " Everything I own" ....:)
@@Isleofskye Ironically, I bought my first record about 1960. It was The Twist by Chubby Checker. I don't think Bread put out a song I didn't like.
My first record was either Blue Moon by The Marcels or Are You Lonesome Tonight by Elvis both in 1960 at 6 years of age.
I didn't realise "The Twist" was a cover by Chubby Checker :)
@@Isleofskye Hank Ballard originally recirded it but the words were considered sexual and it never went anywhere. Chubby Checker put a dance to it and it was his biggest hit. He followed it up with "Let's Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer.. Over here you'd hardly find anyone who has heard of Hank Ballard and Chubby Checker is considered the only one to sing it and not a cover.
"Diary" by Bread is a great song about love and loss. It's about a man who finds his wife's diary and starts to read about himself (he thinks), and then he realizes that it's totally different from what he thought.
Spoiler! 😉 JK!!
not wife , girlfriend
I don't think it was a girlfriend either, more a female friend who was an unrequited love.
I named my second daughter Aubrey after a song of the same name from Bread.
The first line of the the song goes "And Aubrey was her name."
I thought, well of course it is. So my ex-husband and I named our second baby Aubrey.
She'll be 30 in December.
Always a favorite of mine :)
"Just When I Needed You Most"has been in my personal top 10 for decades

I first heard this a few years after it came out at a cousin's wedding, I fell in love with the song and the idea that someone could love a person that much; I was hooked.
Do you want to hear a really sad tune do bread diary please !
I remember the first time I actually paid attention to the lyrics of Diary. Wow. Such a powerful song. Well, quite a few of Bread's (Dave Gates) songs contain some rather brilliant lyrics.
Diary is a beautiful sad song 😢
great song, great twist
Oh man, Diary makes me cry every time I listen to it.
First time I heard Diary: "Awww... AAAGGGHHH! NOOOOO!!" 😁
I sang this song at a wedding in 1981. One of my favorite dreamy~love~ballads of all time ~* This was an FM staple, as were many other Bread hits: THE GUITAR MAN (a MUST listen!); EVERYTHING I OWN; MAKE IT WITH YOU; BABY I'M-A WANT YOU; IT DON'T MATTER TO ME; DIARY; AUBREY; LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE; SWEET SURRENDER; THE GOODBYE GIRL (David Gates solo)
I love all of Bread's music. "Aubrey" is my favorite. "Diary" is another one that's lovely. Their music always calm me when I'm tense. The tension just melts away.
I was scrolling through to see if anyone mentioned "Diary" it was beautifully done like Bread's other songs but with a twist. You know what I mean. Maybe MRM will check that one out to find out the difference.
I also loved the song "Aubrey". I named my daughter Aubrey because of this song.
Ty, I remember this song playing on the radio as I would be playing football with the neighborhood boys. Back in the summer of '76. Thanks for the memories. I hadn't heard this song in a very long while. God bless.
It was in the 70’s. I won a talent show in 1979 singing it. And in 1982 tried out for our high school Madrigal singing it , & got into the group!
Sweet David Gates and one of the greatest falsetto in all of rock music!! So freaking pretty!!
I love Bread. They have fantastic music 💕
UA-cam just suggested your channel and I've watched a few of your videos. I appreciate that you play all types of music. I was in high school in the 80's listening to "The best of Bread" on my walkman! I can still hear my friends giving me a hard time about that! 😂 Btw...80's music junky 🙋♀️!
If one wanted something mellow for a date track then Bread and America were must-have 8'tracks.
An amazing songwriter, never ,ever get tired of listening 🎶 to this song❤
I use to listen to this when I was a young teen! My sister and I each had own copy of the album The Best Of Bread. One side had all the slow songs, the other the fast. For a time, every night when we went to bed we would put them on the record player - you could stack them, when one finished the next would drop - and fall asleep to Bread crooning; first the fast side then the slow side. One of the few good memories of my childhood.
Davis Gates, one of the most talented and prolific songwriters ever!!! The man put out so much music and he was a literal hit machine! Also, this was a song that everyone always wanted to learn to play on the acoustic guitar. Of course the number one everyone wanted to learn was Stairway to Heaven. But this one was very popular to learn back in the day.
We sang this for Chorus class. Loved it! I lived in a time where music was part of the curriculum.
Good analogy Ty. Tell you a quick story. I was in labor with my first child and driving to the hospital in Reno NV which was 1 1/2 hours west of us. I listened to Breads greatest hits all the way there. It kept me calm and helped me get through the early labor. Now every time I hear them, I think about having my first child. ♥
I love the group Bread. Their Anthology is freakin' awesome!
I'm so thankful I grew up in the 60's and 70's music-wise.
Bread one of my favorite groups of all time. At the time this guy and I was best friends. This was somewhere in the early to the mid seventies he owned a 1965 Mustang and we would listen to Bread on his eight track tape player. We were best friends for quite a few years. I miss those days. We didn’t drink or do drugs. We just hung out together and had a lot of good times. I no longer live in the same area. I have not seen him in a while. I might try some time this summer to stop by and see him. He met this girl a couple of years later and they got married and have been together ever since. I am married to but it took me a while to find the right person. I have been married for thirty-seven years. They have been by far the best years of my life. I got really really lucky.
This is my favorite love song of all time.
This and Annie's Song by John Denver are at my top
June 1, 1984 - This was the song my new Bride and I first dance to. Three sons and five grandsons, (and counting), and we are still going 35 years later.
Check out "everything I own" by bread
OMG - I wore out my cassette listening to The Best of Bread. Even had my son listen to it few months back - he liked the folksiness of it he said. But he has an eclectic taste like his mom. He Loves Frank Sinatra too!
Love Bread, I was in my early teens when I heard this and loved the melody and lyrics. I remember doing a book report and having this song play in the background
Sweetest long distance love song ever. Perfect for dedicating to your pen pal. Awww 😍
Almost scratched your head. Saw it in your face. Makes me smile. Sang "If" at a few weddings.
You need to listen to more Bread
Just music during my time when the world was enjoyable to live in. Songs back then was alot about in depth feelings.
Disco was late 70’s...this was early 70’s. The group is called Bread. Loved them. My older brother had their records. You’re right, very peaceful. Also they sang the theme from the film, ‘The Goodbye Girl’ (if you ever saw that).
The 70s! This song was chosen for more weddings during the 70s. David Gates wrote such beautiful songs. My high school dance days .
My first concert on my 15th birthday. My friend gave for my birthday a brown lunch bag with a baggie in it with two pieces of bread and my ticket to see bread in between the slices. Good memories.
Born in ‘61 I was a kid in the 70’s. I’m realizing that was a great era for music, with the exception of Disco!
I think I love all BREAD songs! I love them. Graduated from high school in 1974. I think my friends and I enjoyed the best of old music, current music and new and future music! I love MUSIC!
60's. We had a record shop that sold records that came out of jute boxes for 25 cents. My first 45 was Bread Diary and Otis Redding Sitting on the dock of the bay. Still love these 2 songs.
This Bread song is one of the most romantic songs EVER ❤️❤️❤️❤️
So many memories of bread in the 70's. I understand listening to Bread to think.. As a teen in my room writing a love letter and in my diary. I put bread on to relax..
Another AM radio blast from the past. And you really needed a fast foot on the wah-wah pedal.
It's not a guitar played with a wah-wah pedal.
It's a guitar played through a Moog synthesizer.
In my opinion, one of thee most beautiful love songs ever written! Pure, simple, honest love song. 😍
Bread is amazing, - everything I own, baby I want you, guitar man, make it with you
Dominique Silva Totally agree
Trace thank you, :)
Dominique Silva oooooooh yes.
Ingrid strickland, you know it!!!! :)
The band is called Bread. The song is If. I grew up on Bread; it is very nostalgic for me.
Oh wow.... I can’t listen to Bread anymore. My mother loved them and now it makes me cry to hear them. They do have really good songs. The guitarist David Gates was one of the best in his time.
one day you will enjoy them again, if you are like me. it took a while
Any Bread tune is a gem...
Have always loved this song and the group 🎶❤️
Great memories of dating listening to this song on the radio driving around.. beautiful song
You are so Awesome.... I enjoy your channel I had this album when I was 16 I use to fall asleep with his sweet voice ❤️
David Gates was the lead singer and song writer, but there was a band here. Bread had several hits but it was clear that David was moving out in front of the group.
Poetry to music and such lyrics and singing. Top Notch !
Bread is like this pretty much throughout their catalogue. Soothing love songs
Just a grade schooler when this came out, Bread was the first group I fell in love with!
The Band was named Bread - If is only one of their wonderful song !!! Also, check Bread - Guitar man, Aubery...!!!
This was our wedding song in 1977. I still love listening to it. Hubby does too. (Still together, Thank God)
Although it wasn't a current hit, I played this at my wedding in 1981. Guitar Man is another excellent song by Bread.
It was just a Love Song. Plain and simple. I sang it as a solo in the 7th grade. Bread was BIG in 70's. My music teacher sure was shocked when I asked her if I could try it....but was pleased as well.
ah the sweet sappy we love everybody early 70's ---This was the radio back then-The Carpenters, Bread, James Taylor, John Denver, Bobby Goldsboro
Tulsa, Oklahoma music scene of 1970's had lots of influence and best songwriters and musicians vibrant city.
Bread’s songs were mostly slow but really nice. I seen them in concert and was the only relaxing concert I ever attended. The song is from the 70’s
IN A CLASS ALL THEIR OWN! No one can imitate this group! MISS THE 70's
One of my fav 70s ballads!
One of my fav Bread songs. My mom loves Bread. I think I was the only kid in middle school who listened to this more than Sublime and Weezer. I now think of my Husband who died at 28 of a stroke.
Their song called "Everything I Own" always gets me 😢.
Bread, one of the greatest groups of the 70's, take me back junior high. For a more Rock tune by Bread try " Down On My Knees."
