Kalle Rovanperä scored his third victory of the season in Greece on Sunday afternoon to tighten his grip on this year’s FIA World Rally Championship.
The 22-year-old had looked set to bring up the rear of the podium at this 10th round but found himself topping the standings by more than two minutes after Saturday’s penultimate leg when former leaders Thierry Neuville and Sébastien Ogier retired.
Both were sidelined by central Greece’s unforgiving rocky mountain roads, with Neuville’s Hyundai i20 N sustaining front suspension damage before Ogier, driving a Toyota GR Yaris similar to that of Rovanperä’s, stopped after SS12 with rear suspension failure after hitting a rock.
Rovanperä could afford to relax through Sunday’s three-stage finale and sealed a near-perfect weekend with the maximum five bonus points for winning the Wolf Power Stage. He headed team-mate Elfyn Evans, his closest championship challenger, by 1min 31.7sec at the finish and extended his points over the Welshman to 33 with three rounds remaining.

There needs to be a Rally West Africa. Here in Ghana, the roads are the same as those I see in Greece, comparable to my daily commute, and there is no wildlife to get in the way.
Change the calendar to have all of the European rallies first, then two in Africa, two or three in South America, and then close with Australia and New Zealand.

Problem is there's need a place for cars to be put, here in Greece there is and that's why it's the same location as the last year

@@TsunaXZThere have been a few that were starting to get there but the current crop of hatchbacks look too similar. The street "versions" of the WRC cars are too refined with too many features too. I want a raw minimalist version for the street.

Tanak was amazing... If not for that time penalty, he would've been on the top. Evans was cautious and careful. Great rally. Lets see what magic awaits us in Chile.
Thierry needs a coach/race strategist. He expended the car yesterday, fighting Ogier who is not even fighting for world championship . Someone please remind him that he must race against who is fighting for world championship. His poor strategy is destroying his chances. He must choose his battles wisely.

Very unfortunate for Neville that he had to retire despite that superb drive in the last three days and leading. In rally apart from having a strong car one also needs luck. It was not on his side here. To Ogier and Tanak too. Hope he bounces back in Chile.

Without Ogiers retirement it would've been another 1,2,3 for Toyota. Hyundai's reliability and Ford pace can't match Toyota's.
