- We visited the ACBS Blue Ridge Chapter's classic and wooden boat show on lake Greenwood in South Carolina and toured many classics including Hacker Craft, Dodge, Chris-Craft, Old Town, Dorsett, Jersey Skiff and others.
My Granddad bought new, a 1956 WageMaker runabout, powered with a Johnson 30 or 35, i can’t remember, and a Dilly trailer. Anyway when I turned 13 he gave me the rig!!! It was in kinda rough shape, but still loads of fun! I finally pulled the boat, it was kept the family boathouse, for refurbishing and refitting. It was 69, I was Fourteen, and mowed lawns in the Summer, raked leaves in the Fall, prepped flowerbeds in the Spring for money that I was throwing into the hole in the water that wasn’t even in the water yet!The affordable solution of the day was to fiberglass. So, the leaky hull was aggressively sanded, faired, fiberglassed, raindrop again, then a cream paint job. The deck calking was painstakingly removed, the deck sanded then long boarded.
A full reupholstering, all new wiring, fresh steering cables, the throughly refreshes motor, new fuel tanks later, I was 16, I COULD LEGALY DRIVE! So I installed a trailer hitch onto my 66 Chevy SS, don’t judge, and yes I actually owned a 66 SS, I bought it from my dad, $200. I think I got the “yeah we’ll, he’s my son deal.” Anyway, I towed my beautiful boat behind my beautiful SS, to ever lake within 200 miles of Dallas, always accompanied by some beautiful bikini clad high school sweetheart. Life was soooo good!!
I no longer have the boat, it’s a very sad tail for another time.
Cheers from Dallas🍸
Wow, what a great story and can see it going down the road! It was amazing how many cars had some sort of bumper bolted trailer hitch back then, even Corvettes and I remember one on a Plymouth Superbird even! Those were great days and times.
Really like. Classic. Boats. And new ones. Too. This is. A real good find. Bet you had a great day out here
Yes it was and it was a spectacular day! Thanks for your interest!
Really liked the tour!
Thanks, Bart! It was a great day at the local marina/restaurant. Hope to have the club back soon! All great people and true living history on the water.
Absolutely beautiful!!!
They sure are!!!! stunning and many hours of work into these. Thanks for the interest!
Great video, reminds me of the time when I was growing up in upstate New York, where Hacker Craft was based in a little town at the north end of Lake George.
Indeed, the upstate NY lakes were hot spots for these old boats!!!
Gorgeous!!
Thank you! Cheers! Appreciate your interest!
Thank you! RWB ❤🎉
We appreciate your interest too!!!
Cool Boat
Thanks, Javier! They were very cool!!
I learned to ski on Cypress Garden skis. I'm 75.
BTW, when I was a kid my dad bought a Yellow Jacket molded plywood boat. It was sweet.
Great story!! I recall the Yellow Jacket plywood boats manufactured in Dennison Texas! I believe that is also the boat referenced in The Alan Jackson song "drive". ua-cam.com/video/dQe3DKDQRRs/v-deo.html
Dan Lee Boating will build you your dream 1930’s boat
We'll check out dan Lee!! Thanks!
Beautiful boats you have , I got a 1949 Bourber 12 ft runabout built in Newburn Up close to your show . But not as beautiful as yours and got a 194? Army Barge motor with 2 different lower units , it’s a 22 hp Johnson , still painted O-D Green .
Nice!!!! let's keep them floating for future generations!!! Thanks for the interest and support and well as hearing about yours.
Requires a great deal of maintenance to keep these beauties looking sharp.
Yes, it is indeed a labor of love which is evident. Living works of craftsmanship and art.
The 61 boats all had cable steering that was finicky because the cables could stretch or come loose. The hydraulic steering is not orginal
Correct. Many are upfitted with modern rigging and power for reliability and safety also making them more readily useable with non-soak 5200 bottoms.
When boats were boats
These indeed are boats. I would love to see a fiberglass boat from today, 60 years from now. You most likely will not.
''Floating Acoustic Guitars''
Yes!! ha!
1949 criscraft model boat
I'm pretty sure the fella was thinking one a week not one a month😂
Agreed! :)
Nice
Thanks! appreciate your interest. Such a great collection of history and great caretakers of these craft.
Thanks for doing the video. I contemplated going to the show from NY but didn't make it. Suggestion. Keep hand out of video and do not know of any boat or car guy that likes someone to put there hands on their hard work.
Robert, I appreciate the tips to consider. I'd never touch a car at a car show. With boats, these are in open splashing water, had a few light showers on them over the weekend, plenty of pollen this time of year, and I asked if I could touch it. These are not cars at an indoor car show brought in enclosed trailers which you would never touch. Boats like this once back at the shop will require extensive cleaning and evacuating water out of the hull. Have you ever had assistance in docking without someone touching your boat? Have you ever entered a boat without stepping or sitting on the side of it or without stepping on a seat?

Ah, Dick Pope envy. Obsession and envy is a wonderful(terrible) cognitive dissonance exercise. I have done my share too, yet everyone seems to promote it.
Thanks for the feedback and information! Appreciate your interest and insight.
Get that baby blue fiberglass boat out of there. What a disgrace to all the beautiful wooden mahogany boats!
Ahhh, Steve. some of those old fiberglass boats need some love too. We do appreciate the wooden ones tho! Agree
