  • If you want to stand out in interior design and create something fresh and new, something that no one else has seen before--then you need to start seeing things differently. Pinterest is not enough my love! Do you think Kelly Wearstler is looking there to get ideas for her next incredible hotel design? No, she is drawing out her imagination, and you can do the same, but first, you must begin to train your eye to see the little things that most people never see.
    In this episode, I want to share with you a few techniques to train your eye to identify beauty and become more sensitive to symmetry, balance, light, color, movement, and all those little nuances that make something truly special. When you look at the world differently, you can then begin to create unique and different spaces in interior design.

    ABOUT ME:
    Hey I'm Christina DiStefano! I am sort of a jack-of-all-trades: artist, sales director for a top NYC real estate development company, certified life coach, yoga instructor, Reiki practitioner, artist (I'm a painter), businesswoman--and now I'm taking on Interior Design via a certification (I'm starting an Interior Design firm in 2024 lovingly called Casa Serenità Interiors. Oh and did I mention I'm leading the renovation of our country home (inside and out)?!
    I believe that home is a sacred place that we nurture, and in return, it nurtures us. That being said, my design process is focused on creating a sanctuary, a place of serenity that truly feels like home.

    My grandmother put a few glass shelves across the windows of her dining room. On those shelves she put small colored glass vases: amber, deep red, olive green, and colbalt blue. When the sun would shine through, it made a rainbow of colors on the wall. As a child, it was my favorite place in her home on a sunny day. Your videos are so inspiring, and make my heart happy. Thanks for your honest sharing and for getting to the core of what we all long for in our homes.

    I am an artist and this has been VERY inspiring to me. My husband and I are buying a very modern “cookie cutter” apartment - brand new construction - here in Portugal. It is what we can afford in our retirement years. Yet, I want it to become our unique space that is surprisingly unique and welcoming, filled with creativity and inviting curiosity in our guests. I think I will try to incorporate a window wall in the entryway…and perhaps wall paper that is a lovely neutral texture. Plus, I love your idea in another video of framing in surprising ways!

    Hello! I am renovating a house in France (Nevers). In my past homes, I observed I got tired of the way I decorated it. And as I was looking back at it, I realized that's because I unconsciously followed trends. I was not looking for it but I was influenced. So now, the process for designing my home is :
    - I remembered how were all the spaces I visited and really like / felt good in. For example, I notice I love colorful kitchens and I always feel good in light sunny yellow living rooms and I always dreamt of a checkerboard floor in my kitchen or entryway.
    - I follow trends. The point is to check out if something I planned is on trend. If it is, I wonder if I like what I planned because I REALLY like it or because it is on trend : since when do I like this color/type of furniture/shape? Is it recent or old? If it is recent, it means I am surely influenced by a trend and I will be tired of it when the trend is out. So I change my plan.
    It is an iterative process.
    And well, I did not think of looking at art I like before as you recommend it but now I saw your video, I notice the home I designed is a lot like the art I love : colorful, soft and a bit magical (Odilon Redon, the nabis etc)

    • @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio

Movies, books, music, food, etc all things can bring you inspiration-but most importantly trust yourself in this process 🤗 Your home doesn’t have to look like someone else’s to be beautiful, memorable and nurturing ✨

    Your home is beautiful. One day, consider painting your interior doors. I painted mine Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, a very soft black and it’s a WOW to everyone who comes to my home. Black doors are classic and look beautiful in any style home, especially homes with a lot of natural light and light furniture and decor. I’m loving your channel. I do not have a degree in interior design but have studied it for years and have done many jobs for friends. I try to show people that they can always improve their space by painting, changing things around, and buying only a few new accessories. Most people don’t have the money for a whole house interior change, but there is so much we can do to make our homes more beautiful using what we have.

      I love what you're doing. Some people like you just have natural talent! I like your suggestion to paint the doors. We have also been searching from some older doors to swap out, something with more character These are the original doors from the 50s--but maybe a little paint is just enough to dimension before we do our renovation. I want to salvage as much as possible when we do renovate. I also love Iron Ore---such a good contrast.

I'm going to strip it down to it's bare bones, and start a fresh. I think you are quite a breath of fresh air in the interiors world. It is lovely to have a goal of guiding others to unlock their unique personality. I have always been doing things in my own vision and flare- from the way I dress to the kind of property I purchase (or in the past, rented). Unique. I am slowly renovating a place in France, and it is a project that unfolds slowly but with great purpose. Indeed, it is very important to live in a house for a while, before you understand what works for both the building and your lifestyle. I have a great love for antiques and vintage pieces ...and then pair this with some contemporary elements. I never care for what is on trend...it has always been that way- I choose what speaks to me, and what I love. It is not important to create a house for someone else to remark on, but rather a place that inspires you- and is the place you love to be in. I guess it is because I am an artist as well, so perhaps it makes this easier (not being held to what is 'on trend'). Certainly design trends can be fun to delve into, explore a bit- to see what shifts your style...or as a fascination for what people seem to be drawn toward (especially more important if you are renting out a gite/cottage for example).

    • @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio
      @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words. I love interior design and decorating so much, but that being said, I believe that a house should always showcase and highlight the lives of those living in it. This is what makes it a home. This is what gives it soul and as we nurture our home, it nurtures us right back. Yes, I believe that you being an artist does open you up to thinking differently, being open to the unconventional, and out of the box sort of thinking. It is my hope to inspire others to awaken their inner creative spirit and create their dream home--even if they don't think of themselves as "creative."
      Trends are fun to get inspiration from, sometimes they resonate with us and we can take something from them--the irony is that a lot of the "trends" are a reinterpretation of something from the past. I too like to mix the vintage and antique with the contemporary. I feel like this is a more European sensibility, but more American's are opening up to this (versus buying all new every few years). I love generational pieces that stay in the family and then get restored/refreshed as time go by. This is how I was raised (also artistic parents). My husband's parents are from Sicily, while my father's family is first generation from Mexico/Spain. My mother's family from Switzerland (but I'm the 4th generation--yet I was raised with this same type of thinking).
      A long response but I want to thank you for commenting and sharing your experience as well as your home. I find it extremely inspiring!

    I got emotional watching your video. The homework you give is what i do every day. I am a photographer / beaded jewellery maker and soon to be professional organizer with a big passion for interior design. I used to have pictures of Brancusi sculptures and i just realised, when looking him up, how much i miss art. I have always felt the flame ignite when spending time on art, whether it be my own or someone else’s. But i have spend way too much time on things that aren’t that important out of fear of really putting myself out there with what i love to do, make and talk about. Which is art, nature and how to create a home that brings you joy. I will be turning 40 this year and everything inside me is now screaming ‘be the artist you were born to be’. I am not saying this to sound dramatic or claiming i am super talented or anything. It is just that i have been putting what’s important on the back burner for too long. So this video really struck a chord 💗 Thank you for sharing, love your country house btw, it looks amazingly peaceful 🌸

      Oh thank you Melinda! I got this from Banana Republic a couple years ago. I sometimes get comments on my clothes (like where did you buy it?) on this channel and I'm always like, "Oh I got that a couple years ago."
      I try to only buy things that are authentically me so they stick around for a long time, but not the best if someone wants to buy the same item. I suppose I need some new YT clothes hahaha
      PS Love that you are seeing these beautiful details too--it's so important to notice the simple beauty of the world.

      I absolutely agree. Christina totally gets it. I just said yesterday that I am so sick of seeing “showroom floor" decor in people’s homes. When someone walks into your home they should learn some about you when they look around and see instantly what’s important to you or what inspires you. These cookie cutter beige spaces that everyone wants are so boring.

    I'm curious why you have the sofa facing the room rather than the window?

    • @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio
      @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio  8 місяців тому

      Good question! It’s because of the living room layout. There’s a fireplace to the left-which is perfectly aligned opposite the window. The living room is long and narrow and we can’t have the sofa in front of the fireplace (we use it a lot) and it doesn’t flow right to have it on the sides.

    I am from Europe and I never understood why the Americans put the head of their bed against the window. When I wake up, I want to look outside, not inside. The wall protects me emotionally and literally, not the window. There might be a draught under the window. You shut out the light during the day and it is too bright sleeping next to the window. I dont know any European room, where the bed is next to the window. Is this a Feng Shui thing?

    • @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio
      @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio  8 місяців тому +3

      Good comment. I think it’s more of an interior design limitation really. I too prefer to open my eyes looking out a window, not under a window; however, some rooms have poorly designed layouts that do not take into consideration where the bed will go.
      Also older homes are not necessarily designed for king sized beds! Or even queen for that matter and so there may be a wall that faces a window, yet the space is too narrow.
      Outside of that I cannot say. Maybe someone just likes it 🙃 In terms of energy, there’s a lot of energy coming into the home through the windows so not a good place to rest your head. It would disrupt one’s sleep.
