I have a 1907 very small cottage. I embraced the vintage of the home for my decor. Furniture is so big these days, I had to scout around for a long time looking for small, vintage furniture finds. It took months, but I found pieces and then had them reupholstered in fabric that is not so vintage-y to bring them up-to-date, like wide wale corduroys and slubby linens. I also love the cozier moodier colors. I kept all the walls the same color (White Veil) and then chose darker drapes -- in velvets and dark florals. Love it! Thanks for letting me share, Lisa 😀
Yes! I chose a charming neighborhood with hundred year old houses and beautiful gardens. But people lived differently a hundred years ago, and it’s been a challenge to create a space that is both comfortable and true to the architecture and period. Thanks for sharing!
Yes my mind is bending on this one as I think of a contrasting rug as defining the space when one is trying to set up separate spaces. I have an area where I might replace a rug and I'm nervous to make it brown (I have original hardwood floors, plus I'd never decorate with brown). Someone please tell me something reassuring :D!!!
I have been watching several interior designers on UA-cam for many years. You are the most authentic and passionate and the ONLY one that I continually learn from. Thanks for keeping the material fresh, it can’t be easy.
I have two apartment sized sofas. They are not as long as regular sofas. I put them in an L-shape, so they mimic a sectional. I floated one sofa between the living room and dining room, so it acts as a divider between the open concept spaces. Then I put a sideboard on the back of the sofa, facing the dining room. It can hold a lot! The top of the sideboard can be used as a buffet, a bar, or just for decor. I found this arrangement to be very useful! 😊
I learned about "the envelope" here on Lisa´s channel. It´s so good to have one word for floor, ceiling and walls and think about it as one concept. Great video.
I feel like I'm playing Tetris moving to a small apartment from a large one. It's exciting and daunting. Your video immediately offers concrete advice to help put my ideas on course as I try to make decisions within a short deadline ahead of the move- thank you!
Great ideas and have used several in the 10x40 rv park model we call home. Mostly, I love our tiny house. But the one thing I hate is that the entry door opens right into the living room with no room to create any type of foyer. So what I did was paint the door to blend with the walls and mounted a curtain rod high on the door (which has a half glass window). Then, I got full-length semi-sheer curtains to hang on the door that match my curtains on the opposite wall. Not ideal, but it does help a lot to disguise the door, especially in the evening. Tricks the eye.
Such practical advice for small spaces. Measure measure measure! Then get the most practical furnishings for the rooms. Best of all was the editing job here Lisa. I have never seen anyone put the influencers video in the tv screen being shown in the video. Very clever!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰
Wow, this video is a must-watch for anyone living in a tight space! The advice on decluttering and creating visual flow is super helpful and I love how they demonstrate each tip with real-life examples. I'm feeling inspired to reorganize my space and make it feel bigger and more functional.
I appreciate the professional language while describing spaces, breaks, colours, patterns, and all things design. I try to explain to those who compliment my decor, and then want my input, but I stop short of appropriate language in some respects. I started by looking at Sears magazine, Eatons, The Bay by age 8-9. Over the years, always redesigning spaces and decor. I did not lean in that direction for a profession, but have managed to renovate several homes, only able to build one, and all with great results that many wanted to emulate. However, made my mistakes along the way too. As a 19 year old in Vancouver B.C. in a small room in a converted mansion... the monochromatic was trending, and I immediately could see how this is the way to go in small spaces, like studios. Your channel confirms what it has taken decades, and limited budgets to experience. Currently helping my daughter and son in law with their summer cottage, late 60's retro, semi arts n crafts home, lots and lots of wood, many different varieties. Said the same thing, small spaces, but big enough house, a lot of wood, get rid of stipple, and whitewash as much as possible. There are painted black beams in some of the house, such an eyesore, because so much natural wood everywhere else. Anyway, a work in progress. Thank you Lisa!
I found a cool mural wallpaper for my narrow entry hall. The mural is as though you're looking out paned windows to lots of plants. I think that looking-out aspect is going to make the space seem a lot bigger.
The last place I was living was a bachelor suite. The back of the couch was against the foot of the bed (which I didn’t like) so I came up with the solution of putting 11“ deep shelves in between that had two different heights. Then I put my house plants on the shelves and it made a beautiful screen. It was a double win because the window in my sleeping area was south facing so the plants also liked that spot. And I didn’t block the light from coming into the rest of the suite.
An excellent video, Lisa. Thanks for posting. I think you have to be a tidy person living in a small space so regular decluttering & editing is a must.
I have a bedroom like that. Double bed. One entry door one closet door to far left on same wall, , one wide window centered on opposite wall, and the “natural = Fung shui” place to put the bed is the shared wall with the next-apartment’s bedroom. Good luck.
We share an 800 sq ft cottage that can sleep 10 with one bathroom! Talk about a challenge! Combination of Murphy beds, bunk bed, trundle bed and sleeper sofa. The hardest part is seating when the weather is bad and everyone is inside. Vertical space is my friend for sure when it comes to storage. We are about to change out flooring throughout to luxury vinyl which should help with visual flow.
The platform beds with storage underneath are called Captain's beds in the coastal areas because they mimic the beds in the Captain's quarters on a large boat. They are really great! The Victorian eta farmhouse we're remodeling has no closets and smallish bedrooms so Captain's beds are the perfect solution, introducing stylish and efficient storage into these rooms.
Hi Lisa, once again a fabulous small space masterclass, thank you💐 for me the furniture scale advice is key. Unfortunately Australia does not do small living well🇦🇺🐨🦘
Excellent tips! Thanks, my friend! I’m fortunate to have a fairly large space now, but I may end up moving to pursue a Master’s and might not be able to afford something as large in my next city, so I’ll keep these tips in mind!
Such great ideas. One thing I have been watching for you to address is curtain rods. When doing a long wall of windows, would it be a bad thing to paint the curtain rods the same color as the wall?
Glass blocks are very much in style now. Smoke glass is the most popular. Good option for a room divider. The most important for small places and actually for any places is storage. And storage should be enclosed. Build ins are the best and no open shelves, they created a visual noise.
Perfect timing. I love all of your videos though 😊. I literally used to love browsing Restoration Hardware for inspiration~ what was I thinking? I own a 1400sq for bungalow near the beach. All of these secrets are what make a “small “ space feel curated , designed , well appointed and comfy. Thanks Lisa~ From Lia
❤ All sounds good, I feel like I’m on the right track. I did go through 3 dining tables 4 is a charm. I got the Mariedamm table and Yngvar chairs in black. Perfect for our space. The other option I loved was Room & Board they have a great selection of table tops and bases it just wasn’t in my price range. These are true tables for small spaces as I feel small space furniture needs to be very durable and our Ikea table is just that.
I purchased a Homesteps foreclosure studio in Queens. NY. I have a murphy bed (no room divider needed). Luv the pic of the oversized sofa - LOL😂😂😂 I bought a 7 foot silk Lillian August sofa (flew to the plant in NC - got a $6K sofa for under $1K) - knocked out the middle man. When they delivered the sofa, they ripped the back, had to take the sofa back to NC for repair. I had 2 choices either have somemone take the sofa apart and reassemble it (it is an 8-weigh tie down sofa) or hoist it through the window, having someone take it apart, the integrity of the sofa is not guantreed. I hired day labourers to walk the sofa up 8 flight of stairs. I have a galley kitchen - bought round kitchen table as you suggest in this video (had contractors cut-off 1/3 of table in orderr push the table flush against the wall) and chairs at hotel liquidiation in NYC (I live in Queens, NY) - after watching ts video, will update the chairs (Girl, you are on point!).
Thank you, I live rurally but have a small house with a long main room so have set up the main living room and then a reading area separately via an L-shaped modular (meant to be outdoor!) sofa situation. I've wondered whether a divider would be good or not but since the dual windows are one set by the sofa and another set by the reading area, is seems to divide up pretty well without breaking the light from the front windows that reaches both areas. Having many types of examples of dividers was very helpful. The only key thing the video had a miss on, which would have been VERY appreciated, is we really need more pics of the darker envelopes since those are less common to see... need examples of that please. However, as a person who bought a structurally very sound but pain-disastered home in light colors I hate, it was great to hear that monochrome is the answer. I'm ill and not able to do a lot at this point esp. with dizziness issues, so the idea that I could slowly make my way around the house painting everything the same color and then go back later and just add a gloss to the moulding or whatever was very cool to think about. It won't solve the disaster of the wall texturing I have, but I bet that monochrome would dampen the impact of the textural weirdness as well. Please do a deep dive video on dark color pro/cons for small spaces please please please? I always love dark colors when I see them take over a room but there is so much risk to doing them wrong and US folks just don't learn how to do dark color rooms. We need help! Also, just a note that that bubble chair from the ceiling would not be allowed in a rental or communal living space most likely, as it has to be fastened into the rafters. Thank you
I think you're right. I'm SO nervous to buy something brown for my house when I hate brown aside from my natural wood items that area already here. SO nervous! Did I mention I'm nervous? :D :D :D
Brilliant video Lisa! You are simply the best ! I cannot wait to hear your tips, tricks and solutions every week! Following you on instagram too…so fun 🤩
Thanks. 567 sq ft. I was gifted a fair-size couch so, it’s on a diagonal. Behind it is a lengthy console table, also on that diagonal. I use one half + dining chair for eating, and the other half + desk-friendly chair, as a desk. The corner TV is placed-you guessed it-on a DIAGONAL♥️, across from the couch. The coffee table is on its side, over at the wall. “In its place”, I sometimes use two same-but-different-height “bar chairs”. Storage is on the same wall, but the opposite side diagonal to the TV, inside my armoires. I have yet to figure out a rug because I so wanted room to do yoga🧘🏽♀️🧘🏽♀️🧘🏽♀️. Cheers!

Love the tip on keeping the carpet the same tone as the flooring when you have a small space.
Glad it was helpful!
I just did, and it was a game changer

Agreed - this is the only channel I need for design. Will not keep looking.

That is what I'd do too. I love buffets and sofa tables.
Lisa, you are THE BEST!!! Love your energy, fun spirit AND PRO PRO PRO Tips!!! THANK YOU!!
That's a good point about seating w/legs as opposed to overstuffed upholstered seating to give a more open feel.
I love the black room divider that mimics a Louise Nevelson piece. Functional and an art statement al in one!
Yes! Love that piece.
Where do you get that black room divider
I must be odd as I detest the brualist look and would NOT want that facing me everytime I enter my studio... like the idea of shelves with plants
Thank you for being one of the few creators that focus on solutions vs what we should be avoiding. Great content.
I appreciate that!
I learned about "the envelope" here on Lisa´s channel. It´s so good to have one word for floor, ceiling and walls and think about it as one concept. Great video.
The envelope is a word in making a sound on a synth too. It has to do with looking at the whole.
Totally agree and like a million times less daunting skill-wise and decision-wise than having to decide 3-4 colors for each element of the envelope.
Ceiling, wall, and trim in the same color is interesting. Thanks!
Glad you like it!
Good idea to keep same color (texturing different from baseboard, on walls)
I feel like I'm playing Tetris moving to a small apartment from a large one. It's exciting and daunting. Your video immediately offers concrete advice to help put my ideas on course as I try to make decisions within a short deadline ahead of the move- thank you!

We have to work with what we’ve got, so that sounds like a good solution - you made the door “disappear”.
I LOVE that shrinking sofa graphic. So creative!

Yay! I love your small space videos!
Wow! This episode had some great video production! I liked your tips on how to treat your floors and going vertical w/ storage in small spaces.
I love the idea of keeping floors and rugs similar colors. That’s what wrong with my lil dining area!
Same here, but it’s too late 😢
Lisa, your new glasses are amazing !!! 🤓
A great innovation is the Frame T.V. always have Art on the Wall. Makes a huge difference.

If you need storage put it in the corner with a mirrored bi-fold door wrapped around it. It reflects the room so your eye perceives it as more room
