I second the thin wool under layer, especially when it's fitted for when the wind comes through under a sweater or coat. I also love how breathable wool is in regulating temperature so you don't end up sweating under the layers and getting colder instead of warmer. You might have mentioned it, but also keeping your neck and chest warm makes such a difference so I tend to op for turtle or round necks versus v-neck garments on the colder days.

So true. Add to that they're lighter in weight, but feel warmer.

Yes! I don't love to knit oversized garments in worsted weight yarns but I will wear them all day in woolen/unspun!

Thanks Aimee! So true. Definitely need non-superwash for warmth. I love my unspun garments and wraps. They keep me warm but also not overheated. I’m wondering about hats. I think cables, stranded techniques, and lining really helps with warmth, too. I’m still figuring out those combinations for my family.

I think so! And I think looking at patterns that are a denser gauge for that yarn than you'd work the same yarn for sweaters will be key.

Totally agree! My superwash sweater makes me go from freezing to overheated and back in a flash and the warmest, yet lightest garment I ever knit was my Felix cardigan in Letlopi! Love your patterns! Your Matthew sweater is probably my BEST fitting sweater ever!!! 😊

Woohoo! I’m so glad that it was a good fit for you! What did you knit it with?

@@AimeeSherMakes I made it with Cascade Eco+ and it’s so warm and soft! Am I crazy or is the front yoke also about an inch longer than the back (besides the inclusion of bust darts and making the front wider, which is so simple but genius!)? I feel like all the different adjustments combined have finally given me a comfortable fit! FYI my upper bust to full bust has a 5 inch difference, which is why I struggle so much with most patterns out there today. Thank you for celebrating bodies in all sizes! ❤️

Very informative! You’re teaching us all about wool & its characteristics, love it!
I just bought a whole lotta DK 50alpaca 50wool. Probably have enough for 2 sweaters (14 skeins in med brown. Then I got a bunch of same yarn, different colors). Top down raglan, v-neck, cardigan. Debating whether to design my own (Barbara G Walker’s Knitting from the top book as reference) or a pullover (faster… no purling). Orrr, start w v-neck, then add sts for a steek.
I’m also waiting for your v-neck pullover (colorwork on lower body)…
Oh. Wait!!! I have Cascade220 non-sw…okay. Off to buy the cardigan pattern you’re wearing!!! I’ll figure out the DK later (possibly modify the Coloring book into a cardi…!!!)

I think there's such a shortage of DK weight garment patterns! It's definitely on my to do list for 2024, ha!
Alpaca is REALLY lovely--I didn't even get into different fibers for winter (this video would be an hour long if I did---future me will!) but alpaca is extra warming due to the fibers being hollow which adds even more to that insulating factor!

Thank you, I thought it was ME who couldn’t find many. That said, I do have a handful of DK cardigan patterns in my library.
This is a new-to-me yarn, JBW “Yarn Citizen”. My swatch is staring at me… as are my New Colors (Stripes or a bit of Very Easy colorwork and/or ribbings w different colors).
I was just looking through your patterns in my library. I could probably modify a fingering wt to this DK. Worsted to DK would be a stretch. Where the Cascade220 enters!
You always inspire! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Oh! QueenAnne socks are next up!
