As a protestant myself quoting the words of the late president john f Kennedy whom I love and greatly admire and respect, "for in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all in habit this small planet, we all breath the same air ,we all cherish our children's future,s and we are all mortal " I don't care one bit about a person,s religion, colour ,creed etc we are all the same in the eyes of God, just wish the people who are intent on death, mayhem and destruction could only see the grief and misery it leaves behind for everyone regardless !!!!

It was the anti treatys who done the fighting. The north was abandoned. The victors wrote the history books, a video like this showing the role Protestants had in the formation of the Free State proves there is a lot we are not told.
My great uncle died on hunger strike amonst many others whos names are never mentioned. They actually fought while the rest of the country looked upon them as rebels but at the same time allowed the Catholics in the north to suffer as they did. Are they true Irishmen to allow that to happen or was it no concern of theirs because they were protected under the treaty? As long as they didnt live in Ulster it was none of their concern

It’s more nuanced, some of the Dunmanway/West Cork area Protestants who were killed had been informing though I would agree that doesn’t justify murder and terror. there was definitely sectarianism and many Protestants left out of fear after the Dunmanway/West Cork killings. But there are also examples in the Macroom area of Protestants who fought on the revolutionary side, if you read the book ‘The Briar of a Life’. Though overall of course it wasn’t easy for be Anglo-Irish or Protestant in 1923. I hope some day we’ll have a new Ireland with flag, anthem etc the whole lot So that everyone can feel their narrative is relevant.

@@bernadettemccarthyflahive5357 I do agree with what you said, but I think it's important to say that while Protestants fled out of fear after the Dunmanway killings, that fear wasn't very well founded. As the Dunmanway killings were an outlying incident committed by rogue IRA men and condemned by both the Pro and Anti Treaty sides (1) and that Protestants/Anglo Irish people were predominantly treated well in the Free state as Enda Delaney said in State and Society: Irish Migration to Britain, 1921-1971 "The Irish Free State had few overt discriminatory religious policies against Protestants and prided itself on its treatment of religious minorities." I do agree with what you said however I wouldn't want anyone to come away from reading your comment thinking that the Irish Free state had something out for Protestants.

McQuade was very anti protestant he was also extremely anti semitic. His web of often well-placed informants and flunkies across all sectors of society - were on constant alert for any hints of deviance from, or challenges to, the conservative norms defined and underpinned by church and state, any green shoot of liberalism or free thought, especially Protestant, alien notions such as women’s rights, and of course the ultimate bogeyman - communism.

The Republican side committed appalling atrocities against the clergy and lay religious. Ireland was Pro Franco. To be honest, there was no good side there.

I am absolutely sure that nationalists have no problem tolerating Protestantism. But it tends to come with unionism. And nationalists, I find, have always treated unionism as a sort of mental illness. What Edward Carson said of home rule in 1914 still rings true today:
"I say this to my Nationalist fellow-countrymen, and indeed also to the Government, you have never tried to win over Ulster. You have never tried to understand her position."
