Smoking Ban: MPs Will Vote on Plan to Raise Smoking Age and Ban Vapes

- Опубліковано 15 кві 2024
- MPs will vote today on plans to prevent future generations from being allowed to smoke. The legislation will raise the legal age for buying cigarettes in England by one year, each year until it applies to the whole population. Disposable vapes will also be banned outright, with reusable ones limited to four flavours.
Professor Chris Whitty says vapes 'themselves are not safe' as the majority of them have nicotine in them. He adds that 'we don't know the extent of the long-term effect of vapes.'
smoking is responsible for around 80,000 deaths annually and is the UK’s single biggest preventable killer, costing the NHS and economy an estimated £17 billion a year-far more than the £10 billion annual revenue from tobacco taxation.

Mickey mouse news, leave us alone! who wants a Marlborough can have as they wish!
How will they pay for it? The money that is used for hospitals comes from National Insurance when £11 million people dont pay it plus millions more that comes from abroad that dont pay either. I think that certain illnesses caused by Extreme sports, smoking, vaping, should be covered by Private medical care. People that have fallen over that go to A&E ? There should be other places they attend that are not emergencies this would free up a lot of money. Why does every hospital have a different operating system? this makes no sense
Why don’t they ban the boats - that’s extremely bad for ones health

100%
What this law will eventually achieve is a very vibrant black market; as exists for cheap cigarettes with no taxes paid, as it is with cannabis for personal use and all that. You can’t legislate a ban against a habit. Rather you fund services that help stop the addiction and invest in counter-addictive messaging. This isn’t rocket science
In about 10 years, I will have to search for tobacco dealers 😂😂 If this country and everything as we know will survive at all, considering all the warfares and far-right that does surround us
Stop tell people what they can and can't do that's not the job of the government.
@support_people_not_evil Smoking brings in a huge amount more money in tax than the NHS spends on dealing with smoking related illness, the NHS will be far worse off without the tax money from smokers. Google it, there's Guardian articles on it.
But why is it all about smoking, what about alcohol??? No1 ever talks about the dangers of alcohol, there's me thinking we was on a democracy but apparently they are taking the right to choose away, if they can do this what else will they stop us doing in the future
Smokers are a minority group now, if it went to a referendum I'd vote with the smokers even though I've never smoked. I'd just like them to stop littering....
You forget the government can stop us doing anything they want if they declare an emergency and get the MSM to coerce more than half the country that it's for our own safety!
Exactly! But they make to much money on alcohol tax. AND, non of them would give up their tipples
Unlike alcohol, where repeated excess can have negative consequences, there is no safe dose for smoking.
@paulcampbell840 but, how many kids get hold of it, is my point. And there absolutely is a limit for where its safe. Personally and for the effects it has on society as a whole.
@@kizzywytch There's some alcohol which is good for you in moderation. That's not the same with smoking.

7:50 _"... but we know that, multiple things, that if you inhale them compared to if you eat them, can be extremely dangerous"._ - and yet In the UK and US several hundred 'traditional' additives are permitted in tobacco because they are considered safe as _food_ additives, but little to no enquiry ever seems to have been made into how much they add to the detrimental effects of smoking, which beyond any doubt many of them do. A blanket ban of ALL (or practically all) additives to tobacco would see a substantial reduction in smoking related illness (will never happen of course).

Let’s focus on the war in Europe and the Middle East and how much that is costing the tax payer. Ciggerettes and vapes causing damage to health and a strain on the nhs should be the least of our problems.

If smoking gets banned then alcohol needs to get banned, both are a drain on the NHS.
Power mad, Smaller Gov, Fewer regulations
Has this man ever heard of the disaster that was the Prohibition in the States? It had to be reversed. It is to be hoped that this smoking ban will also have to be reversed if it passes through Parliament.
Whitty looks like he's had a few dodgy vapes
Basically were getting controlled as usual
In my town, go into any 'corner shop' just after school emptying and you'll find a constant stream of teenagers choosing their flavour of disposable vape from a floor-to-ceiling wall of them behind the counter.

Have they got nothing better to do? The country is in ruins and they rant on about vaping. They dont seem to say much about exhaust fumes which everyone breathes in and is 100 times more toxic. Oh but less cars on the road means less money for the Government....
And sweeties shouldn’t be promoted to children either of course . Extremely harmful,
I used to smoke and now vape. Thank you for this segment. Own a variety of colors and flavors, and they have amazing decorations and light up with flames and rockets and whatever else to let you know how much charge and juice is left. Back to boring packaging, especially in person. Nicotine is addictive yet is a mental enhancement and appetite suppressant and aids in preventing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. I've slapped on a patch or had a lozenge for various exams and busy projects over decades. Looking forward to what Science brings us in the decades to come, pros and cons.
My Nanna smoked everyday since she was 16 (working in hosiery factories) and she had alzheimers and parkinsons.
As a vaper , they should ban disposables, they are late. Major damage to the environment and waste of lithium.
Cant stand looking at Dr death
Someone should make a programme of these so called mp and go into there homes and see how they live and what they do in theyre spare time . And ban food and drink in Parliament.
why don’t you feel as strongly about alcohol and the health effects and how much it costs the NHS? when are we having that banned?
I’m normally against Big government & intervention in people’s lives but in this case, I really think this is a good thing. Personally I have never smoked or vaped but the amount of people my age in their early-mid 20s I see vaping despite having never smoked is ridiculous….it has become a whole separate epidemic onto itself.
If you're in your twenties maybe learn it's up to the individual government has no right banning it especially when we have fluoride in water chemicals in foods ect much more dangerous things then smoking. Might as well ban sugar
How can this man show his face.
He's got some nerve hasn't he?
It’s corner shops and newsagents that sell to kids.
Yes when they've travelled back home and got them ,countries a big joke .
The biggest issue with disposable vapes is that they contain a lithium battery and electronics.
You see a lot of disposable vapes chucked on the streets.
Admittedly there's loads of other stuff we should worry about, but we shouldn't have wee waste lying around on the streets.
15 year olds were buying cigarettes or vapes? From where?... Does this law change literally anything, because to me it seems pointless. More nothingburger.
On the contray, I was a smoker and would always finish a cigarette. I now vape and in comparison take just a couple puffs. Its much much healthier, I am 63 with no smoking related health issues. If i could go back to 1985 I would never have started, such a waste of money (80+% taxation).
Are sweeties worse for you than vapies ?
How does Susan know that people who vape, vape all day? 😅
How about stopping the excess of sugar and salt put into food and drink which gets into children food and drink just look into children obesity down to excess sugar and salt ?
Yep raise the age so young people will commit an offenc which will generate income.ban vapes because the revenue has dropped since vape took off, so it's a win win for the government!!
Banning vapes it's the most pressing issue in UK now ? Seriously? Why do I feel that they are always distracting us with useless stuff instead of tackling the real problems ???
It's not about health. It's about raising tax as usual. Greedy government. I have vaped since quitting smoking 9 years ago. I, nor anyone I know has so far had any ill effects from vaping. I have never committed an act of violence or a crime after vaping or smoking. So are we going to ban drink for future generations? I mean it's addictive, bad for health and causes untold crime. When there is evidence that vaoing damages health I will stop.
I am also wondering for years now, why there’s no vape-alike inhalers for saline (1% physiological salts and 99% water, sometimes menthol as an addition) - such inhalations are apparently recommended for some respiratory issues, vape-shape would be much more convenient than an inhaler that needs a table top…

How the f**k is that going to work ?
Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death in the UK and will carry on because alcohol is allowed , alcohol is fine , they advertise it everywhere , all the time ! Lately there is not a single movie or series that alcohol isn't shown ! Alcohol is great for everything , when you 're sad , happy , stressed , depressed , you wanna celebrate , or mourning someone .......!
Every year around 76,000 people in the UK die from smoking but they want to ban vapes???
The governments are all such hypocrites trying to legislate something that's none of their business ! In one hand they don't care about children because if they were, they should work harder to stop the knife crime and everything related. They should find solutions , like after schools activities to keep them busy , hence with no time to be smoking or doing anything else .
The amount of people I personally know who vape all day long, and have never ever had an actual real cigarette in their lives is unreal.
Why would anyone choose to use a vape when you’ve never even smoked properly at all at any point in your life?? I can only conclude that they are either as thick as mince, missing a chromosome or more than likely, both.
It's not gong to make indifferent the perants buy them for the kids like they did with cigs back in the day thought we were a free country
and behind that counter i see fruity flavoured vodkas. i assume they are 'aimed at children' too eh?

Apart from myocarditis, turbo cancers and a few other minor ailments, yes it's safe
When they started the ridiculous tax increases many started going to cheaper alternatives which are unregulated and much more damaging to the health of the person so him saying the numbers of people buying cigarettes went down yes they did but the black market grew obviously he is misinformed
Don't know the difference between disposable and non-disposable . I will give you a clue. one is disposable and the other isn't. 🤣
So out of touch its scary
where was his concern for children when he let 13 year old children decided to take an untested vaccine
Its not about stopping people from vaping becaue vapjng actually helps with stop smoking tobacco. These people want people to continue smokjng tobacco
need to ban people smoking outside close to people property, no one should have to tolerate that stink coming into there airvents or wndows, if you smoke i dont care but i dont wanna inhale it or smell it
I don’t wanna breath in the pollution that comes out of your car
Smoking is like doing drugs, right? What's wrong with banning smoking? Should we embrace lung cancer?
Arrant nonsense really. We are not living in a communist State. People have the right to drink-which is dangerous and causes cancers-. They should have the same right to smoke and bear the consequences of their own choice. What will the State regulate next? The type of shower gel to use?
Consequences of smoking is usually COPD and that is progressive condition which doesn't get better and decrease the quality of your life as you age. And obviously it means you end up using the NHS more.
@@aishaarshadalam3412yes. Diabetes from excessive sugar intake, psychosis from alcohol etc all threaten the NHS at a same or greater level. But how does some group of men sitting in Whitehall and suggesting four colours fix vaping or smoking? The whole law insults the intelligence of adults by grouping them together with children and essentially imposing some ‘school master’ over them. Ask your local corner store attendant about ‘polish cigarettes’. Higher nicotine, no taxes paid but still they flourish in the UK.
Will we all be getting mandatory booster shots with this latest "health" ban?
