- Jenny Pickering has endured months of torment at the hands of a stalker she’d only ever met once. She was left too terrified to even close her eyes in the shower after her stalker, Jan Schlossar, bombarded her with sexual messages, moved house to be closer to her, and even proposed to her at her place of work. Despite being given a lifetime restraining order and spending three stints in prison, Jenny fears he will ‘never give up’. In a bid to encourage other women to report similar harassment, she’s joining us alongside Criminal Psychiatrist Dr Sohom Das.

There's an extremely thin line between "I'm being stalked" and "on today's news a woman has been murdered by her stalker"
The laws need to be changed to protect victims not criminals. My heart breaks for this poor woman.
It’s her work phone not that easy to change it plus would be easy for him to find the new number as it is given out due to it being a work phone . And you shouldn’t have to the owness is not on the victim
She shouldn’t have to get rid of her social media. That’s like saying women shouldn’t wear dresses if they’ve been catcalled wearing them.
@@itsyourmethod This is so victim blamey…why should she have to make all these changes and live her life differently , he should be monitored closely by police , if not locked up for a lot longer , so she doesn’t have to live her life in fear
@@user-om6ss7pp2j Well I mean witness protection programs exist for a reason. It's not right a witness has to change their whole lives, but that's the only way to keep them safe
@@user-om6ss7pp2j And the police sadly absolutely do not have the resources to do that kind of monitoring, that's a huge time and personnel commitment
It's so cringe because a woman smiles at you and is polite doesn't mean she wants you. So gross
Ikr, this is why I don’t be overly nice anymore.
gross. Has happened to me with someone. Intensely horrible straight away and gross. (Especially them being 20+ year or so my senior, as well.)
😡 So I needed, so unwanted. Was so annoying because I had just started a new job where he started the second day, and that was it. Luckily he's an 'agency' worker, temporary position. thank goodness, Thank goodness. I haven't seen him since. 🤮
@@RHathemomenthe's moved onto another victim.
Exactly, most people understand common courtesy but some are so deluded that they easily misconstrue kindness as interest…then proceed to think they’re entitled to something more.
Stalking is vile and destroys lives 😢
@nerozero-mp7hdyou need mental health evaluation… it is beyond vile actually.
@nerozero-mp7hdfound the stalker
God this awful, she looks so exhausted bless her, rightly so. I hope she gets the peace soon
He p sees o
this isn't stalking this is called erotomania. a serious mental illness. and it has 3 stages: hope that the relationship is going to happen - depression because the relationship isn't happening - anger and despair. stage 3 the person is succeptible to try to unalive themselves, the other person or both. this is so so so serious her life really is in danger
It actually IS stalking, because that word describes the behaviour. Erotomania is the cause.
I've had stalkers without erotomania: they're fully aware that you want them to leave you alone but they want the power/satisfaction/pleasure of interacting with you and causing you grief anyway. Erotomania sounds more like what I've had trying to meet Jim Carrey... but I left him alone as soon as I realized he wasn't giving enough green flags for me to continue. He didn't even specifically ask me to leave him alone, but I didn't want to cause him stress so that's what I did. That's why I say it "sounds like" I had erotomania, because I did follow him online before I met him, I sent him fan mail, I did reach out to one of his coworkers, and I did knock on his door, and I have wondered whether he contacted me back once, so I've exhibited all the behaviors listed when I google "erotomania" but I left him alone as soon as he didn't sound enthusiastic... but he had also given signs he was interested. Like, after he'd already met me and seemed scared, he came out of his house again a week later to hang out with me when he heard music I was playing, so, I dunno. I think we come up with a lot of names to describe what people do, but what really matters at the end of the day is whether you're present with someone enough to respect their feelings and desires. I will also add that the police told me that someone is not technically a stalker unless they've been explicitly asked to leave the other alone and they don't. They told me this after my second stalker, and that's the simplest way to understand when your attraction becomes a problem. Otherwise, how on Earth will anyone ever meet anyone? You've gotta "shoot your shot" as they say!
@@AishawithanEyeis this a joke?
I think you are very brave for standing up on TV and talking about it. My stalker is on trial next year and I had to apply for my own injunctions against him because the law didn't help me. So much needs to change.
I hope you got the justice you deserve! So sorry that you had to experience that x
@nerozero-mp7hd that's false

Being stalked must be absolutely terrifying
Being stalked is psychological torture
It is.

Captain Connor Shield, reporting for duty!!!
I was stalked by a 40 something stranger when I was 17 years old and very innocent. After being scared for a few months I had to give up my job.
I had a girl steal my identity and stalk me and the police said they couldn't help as she hadn't physically hurt me. It shouldn't need to get to that point for police to step in 😢
Poor woman. I really feel sorry for her. 😔😔
I've been stalked and its awful. I never felt physically unsafe though. It must be utterly terrifying for women.
This is horrific. Unfortunately, the law never seem to take drastic action until it's too late and only then they admit "lesson's should be learnt". I was stalked and the police didnt care until I was seriously attacked then he got jailed for 13 years
I would be really interested to connect with you and work together towards changing the law? if you see this message I'd be grateful for a reply? I contacted my local MP after I was told that me trying to keep him away from me and attempting to fight to put exclusion zones in place would be a "breach of his human rights" and seen as "restricting his movements" despite the fact I was horrifically assaulted... Once I contacted my local MP I was then granted exclusion zones to ensure my safety when he came out at half time. He was then shortly put back in prison for breach of probation and still currently remains there, but I would very much like to attempt to change the current laws around this as its so outrageous that survivors have to fight for safety ... 😢
When they start to take this seriously!? Her whole life is destroyed and it could end with victim losing her life!!
Agnetha from ABBA had a similar experience after starting a relationship with a Dutch forklift diver…he stalked her after she wanted to breakup…she had a restraining order but it made no difference…..eventually he was arrested and banned from entering Sweden then when the ban ran out……he was seen near her estate again…..unfortunately no one is safe from a stalker.
Yeah, I heard of that.
Having been 'stalked' (although not as badly as this poor woman) I was shocked and horrified to find that it is not possible to stop someone leaving voice messages on your mobile no.Yes, you can block them, but they are still able to leave messages, I think this really needs to be reviewed as it is so wrong!!
If police wont keep him away ...have him took away for good....hes gonna end up doing something bad with her
I’ve been stalked by who I now know as my neighbour on 3 occasions. Today (literally) I got a letter from the police saying they’d closed the case. They have CCTV for the first and 3rd time and still they don’t have enough evidence to “prove it” I have never met this man, but he can see my house from his window, follows me close enough to breathe in my ear and waits at the end of my road. Just breaks my heart that this is happening and the victims are no protected. My last communication from the police was that I needed essentially 3-4 more occasions for them to take it seriously again!
Maybe get a man to talk to him? Family member, friend etc? So he knows its not going to end well for him if he continues..! Also, setup cctv, etc! Take care, be very careful (learn self-defense, carry something with you etc), no one deserves to go through something like this ❤
@@sophieschoices9663 he has been arrested for it so he’s hopefully got the scare. My husband has gone to try and see him, but he watches me and only comes out when I’m on my own. If I carry deep heat for defence it is illegal and carries the same charges as a firearm so I’m literally stuck in my home until he moves. The police advised me to perhaps think about moving but not sure they would be willing to cover my stamp duty!! 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ just all very destroying xo
She seems like a nice lady.I hope she is safe and that she lives a life free from her stalker.
Shame, this poor woman. I once had a guy who was interested in me and he wouldn't take no for an answer. He wasn't a stalker though and I found it incredibly stressful so I can imagine how stressful this must be.
@@planethoth1238what a silly question to ask. How about because they weren’t interested, that is a valid reason to reject someone…
@@planethoth1238seriously???
it's power because men enjoy having power over women. this is simply one facet of it. it's terrible really.
i wld argue not naturally... cuz movies. religions. cultures brainwash men. b4 those existed we had simple philosophies. being nice to others is being nice to ur self. sorry but stalkers r the product toxic environments and their own traumas. a strong community/family wld fix that. 4 example. if i found out my sister was being stalked. i wld lure him into a quiet spot. then carry out the physical duties with a bro. repeated till desired results r met
Monsters like this guy maybe but not all men do. Not fair to tar everyone with the same brush.
@@jimmyhopkins3589 it's not fair to be on the receiving end of it. most men do it but they do it to varying degrees, even in ways they might not think are controlling.

Sorry to hear that. What made your stalker stopped?
@whatever5026 my letter to him a I outed him on social media he only stopped because his face was exposed
You have to be careful around men when smiling and being generous, they take it the wrong way
Very true if you pass someone and they smile they just being friendly?no need to read too much in to it maybe
But as a woman if you aren’t friendly and polite to a man, that can trigger violence or hostility too. We can’t win.
I know 3 women who were stalked by men they had had NO INTERACTION WITH. The fact is that some people are sick in the head, and there is no way of preventing yourself from falling victim to them.
NO WE DONT. Your saying woman need to change their personalities so men don’t harass us. NO WE DONT!
@@user-ly4bh4nn3x no im explaining how a mans mind works
I recently got sexually harassed for the second time in a year at two different businesses.
The first guy used to know everywhere I went and the second one used to wait until my supervisor left and ambush me alone in the office 😔
He had a list of all the things he “loved” about me. He would cry at his desk next to me and nope around.
It was absolutely full on and no one believed me. He was in his mid to late 50’s and I was only 30.
That is terrible poor woman.
Maybe this person needs to be sentenced to Broadmoor Hospital for their psychiatric problems . Jail certainly isn't working .
If the Law fails to protect you then you are justified for taking the Law into your own hands. If the Law fails the former than it cannot justify judging you for the latter!
Somebody called me on the phone for 5 whole years every singel night, all night long between midnight and 8 in the morning. Then it stopped… never found out who it was..
That is truly terrifying. Do you have any suspicions, maybe an ex?
Have no lessons been learned, laws changed since what happened to that poor girl in Harvey Nichols?
It’s sad because I am never friendly to any strangers any more because of this. I have become a very hostile person from fear.
Poor woman, this happened to me with someone I worked with. Not to the extreme that this poor lady went through but I did feel unsafe. He left after a while when I bluntly said to him I wasn’t interested or attracted to him. I literally had to be horrible but I do wish I took it to the police in hindsight. It happened over 10 years ago. I have since moved and haven’t seen him since. More women should feel empowered to report it when it happens. I felt shame at the time, as I thought I led him on in some way but I was just being friendly like I was to everyone in the office.
This is horrific for this young lady. 😢😢
I can’t believe that stalker was bothering her as well as harassing her
Why can’t the police just keep him in prison and keep him well away from her
The issue is the law, because the laws arent great they legally cant keep him. If he is no longer committing an act or breaking the law it is unlawful for them to keep him in prison, and even if they can arrest him they can only hold him for so long. You also have the issue where by other than harassing someone he hasnt commit further offences so they can just send him away all the time. Really until he does something harmful to her they can only hold him for breaking any retaining order.
Really shes in a literal nightmare situation, its essentially psychological torture. Im terrified for if she has kids or something. He literally studied everything about her and her life.
This is so weird,
I'm the victim of stalking and a couple of weeks ago I looked up an Ant stalking charity...the worst but is it's a relative who is the stalker.
Strange Question. Can stalkers love ???
Of course not. What is the definition of love ??
Love is good, kind, compassionate, respectful.
This stalker is everything the opposite. He has no goodness, no kindness, no compassion, no respect for this lady's wishes or privacy.
He is delusional and a lunatic and a danger to society.
This depends on the stalker. Like he said, if they are willing to get help then they can be rehabilitated.
Av been getting stalked by a stranger and av had to quit my job and i hqve him on camera on xmas day standing owtside my house and am now on anxiety meds because of it all and dont feel safe owtside or in my own house .
read this book "the gift of fear" by Gavin de Becker
This is awful, poor woman! Laws need to change, he is clearly unhinged and dangerous
I had a stalker. He'd follow me in his car and wait in car parks for me, hed followed me to a club before and pushed me into one of the cubicles. My bf at the time was a police sergeant. He did absolutely nothing to help me, he just picked me up to get me out. Never attempted to arrest him or scare him off. In the end I think he was stalking another girl with a bf. He got sick of him and beat him up and had him put in a wheelchair. I felt bad for him but there's not enough help to protect the stalking victims and there's no psychological help which should be forced upon the stalkers, to protect the public.
That sounds so scary
you should never disclose your state of mind or emotions so a stalker can know about it. Saying you live in fear is not helpful. the whole thing that they enjoy is having effect on someone's life. the more fear the better. this Tv interview will only feel alluring to the stalker
The prisons/courts let them out. Ridiculous! Fails everyone involved even the stalker!
She should move somewhere else like the UAE, safer country, he won't be able to afford to move to her and even if he did, the laws are so strict at the very least he'd be deported and never allowed to return to the country.
That’s quite unrealistic, not everyone can afford to move and run away.
No one really believes that stalkers of the kind that move from hundreds of miles to within minutes of one's home and devote their lives to stalking really exist until it happens to him or her. These people are so miserable that they can seemingly find no pleasure except in the egoistic thrill they get from ruining the lives of people who have better lives through dedicated work and living respectfully lawful lives. Stalkers are more evil, patient and demented in their love of chaos than murderers; they are pure personifications of sadistic self-interest. In the Internet era of armchair stalking that can carry privacy violations as far as digital surveillance of a person within her own home... It's time that adequate avenues of dealing with these psychopaths that do not consume what remains of the victims' lives are created.
Stalking, gang stalking literally destroys lives. The laws need modernising.

Going for indoor and outdoor security and camera so that there is video evidence if he tries to break in. so sorry for this woman's situation and appreciate her speaking up about this.
Such a shame that women have to take these measures to protect themselves
Trying Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing and/or Brazilian Jujitsu instead of Karate for this use case. You will send an attacker to the other realm. Great exercise, ood fun, sense of community and keep your brain learning new things. Martial arts is a treasure for all 👍🏼
All children should be taught self defense, it's more important than any sports, especially for women.
Paladin is the National Stalking Advocacy Service. Can they help? The founder has mentioned strangers stalking women on her podcast
I was stalked by an ex partner and that was scary enough, he did go to prison for it…but I can’t imagine being stalked by a stranger it must be worse in ways.
I was stalked my brother hung himself so he didn't know my brother but he hung himself and said I don't know know how your brother done this he kept on calling me to a point I couldn't take it no more so I overdosed left me in a wheelchair and his still making fake Facebook profiles and messaging me it's been 4 years
I think obsession and stalking really arises due to lack of communication. I think what she needed to do at the beginning was have a long conversation explaining that she's not interested in him or attracted to him and for him to leave her alone.
If it was made more clear at the beginning he wouldn't be so delusional thinking there's a chance
That is so embarrassing

@@mariewalmsley6143 it's not about "excuses". What he has done is very wrong, it's awful for her, but OP is right that the guy needs psychological treatment and intensive intervention to stop this behaviour in it's tracks. Otherwise he'll do it again and again and again.
@@elliotjohnson9415 absolutely. Saying someone needs help isn’t saying “oh well they’ve got issues so it’s fine”… it’s far from that. Stalkers are far from sane, no one who’s okay mentally would do such a thing. They absolutely need help so that they can get the help they need to turn them into a better person.

This obviously is not aimed at good men: however I do think, from an early age, boys need to be taught to how to accept "no", what to do when told "no", and girls need to be taught how to say "no", so we don't get to the point where the adult male gets a "no" and can't handle it and goes off the deep end. Managing rejection is an art
As for the criminality of stalking, it should be taken much more seriously. These are disordered people and repeat offenders (prison THREE times for the same offence??!) should be kept away from the public whatever it takes
Careful Dermot, twice you fell into victim blaming language.
Does she not like to have friends or something!
I was with a man in staffs he said to me ive seen you putting things together i felt a bit uncomfortable with it he had a hook nose and was dark asain with dry skin but by the time he said anything else he mentioned that all calls are recorded which made me feel better because initially i thought "well what do you mean putting people together thinking back to my elders load then that satisfied me enough to say alright i'm on it if you see my new missus tell her i'm on the bus man licking the seat cover ❤
I feel very sorry for what this lady has been through.
Obviously every stalking case is different and the stalker has a category.
I once worked with a guy where a girl in the office tried to paint him as a weird stalker. The truth was that she had a fiance and had been having an affair with the guy in the office. She simply got scared when he fell for her, so she denied the affair and painted a picture. Nasty piece of work.
