There's no need for a point, we don't need a purpose to exist. You could also make the argument that the universe is deterministic, even the smallest of macroscopic coincidences, like the roll of a die, being predictable with enough context- but why should we bother? In the normal flow of our lives, we don't have the means to predict the roll of a die and therefore, even if the universe is deterministic, why should we care? On our scale, randomness and chance still has meaning. The same can be said about purpose. You are right, scientifically, there is no denying that we and humanity as a whole are utterly insignificant. No one put us here, we're not here to impress any god, and nothing will be left of us sooner or later. But why bother with that fact? There's nothing to change about it. So we should continue considering our own goals in our own microcosmos. Yes, in a way, this could be called a form of ignorance- but there really isn't anything wrong with appreciating ourselves and our existence. good writing honestly, and just to be an armchair psychologist, i think the reason rift's nihilistic view comes off so strong is he's a HUGE environmentalist, so much so it's gotten him into controversies. Having that mindset, everytime you put something in the trash or buy something, you think about the cost on the environment, both in its creation and in it being disposed. those thoughts definitely build up overtime and you end up thinkin nothing is worthwhile because your very existence harms the planet. BUT that's just my thoughts, and i haven't even finished the video nor am i really that wise to philosophy so it could all be trash.

what helped me from my nihilist slump was realizing that nothing really exists in the way we think of it: everything only exists because of perception - everything, therefore, is always changing, is always being perceived in different ways. Following this, you can realize how this idea of “everything winding up in the trash” is kind of flawed - we had nothing physical to be begin with, nothing stable. Everything has been, and will always be fleeting. I realized that I should just enjoy the fact that we have these waves of particles, these ever-moving adventures as best as I can. I can just admire the fact that I can look out my New York City window (facing another building of course), and hear voices, and see sunlight, and perhaps people in other rooms. There is no “purpose,” and that’s okay - need there be? This sort of thinking is of course informed by Camus and other absurdists, but it takes a more optimistic stance.

For those who don’t know the donut is like the first step to learning blender because it fits the simplicity for a newbie to recreate it. We have this God given gift of free will, to have the mindset of “well one day I’m not gonna be here anymore so why even bother” is such a waste of life. Yes, one day everyone watching this video or reading this comment will be either fertilizer for worms and mushrooms or a decorative urn on your grandchild’s fireplace, but that doesn’t mean nothing matters. If life is pointless cuz we all die, just save the grief of however many years are left and take the easy way out (obviously don’t actually do that I’m just saying this to make a dramatic point). We come from nothing and we go to nothing, but getting to experience the in-between is a genuine blessing. People take for granted the fact that we as humans are able to experience things. There isn’t a single other living thing on this planet that can experience things the way we do. Experiencing bad things is just as great as good things because we got to experience them. The pain or sadness or anything you feel because of a bad experience is proof that you are infinitely more than just a collection of DNA and chemical operations, and I personally find so much joy in that.

Hey Uncle E, I meant to say this a while ago but thanks for what you do. You are a person who I can relate to, as my thoughts tend to align with yours most of the time. I too struggle with some of things you talked in this video, though I'm not sure if I fully understood it all but oh well. I think there reaches a point for some of us (nihilist/solipsist/secular humanist/agnostic) where we just need to realize that all that really matters is the present. What we have at our disposal, now. Not what we have in the future, not what we had in the past, but what we have right now. Our families, loved ones, close friends or coworkers, pets, hobbies, etc and focusing on those things that bring us peace in the now. It's such a cliche term/expression but a really important and useful thing to know because its so easy to get caught up in the mix of life and our anxieties and worries and struggled that we forget about what we have right now, and what we have right now is the most important thing.
I’ve been asking about the point since I was in middle school. I’ve since decided that since death is frequently hard to attain (at least by choice), then the point is make your life the least painful for you and those around you. And if that means easing the suffering of others, then that’s what that means.
The only thing that matters to me is if i can smoke a little weed and i dont freeze to death at night in my car. Thats the point to my life. As a homeless man i have to focus on not starving, staying warm, making sure i have money from work, and of course relaxing with a little weed or beer. Granted im not spearing wolly mammoth or saber cats. But this is survival for me and thats what matters currently. Hour to hour. Day to day.
I don't think more happiness is necessarily better. Say you live a life of no worry, no pain, no loss, no sorrow, no struggle, but only pure happiness. Well, that just doesn't sound like a life lived at all. Happiness will become painfully monotonous and humanity will deliberately sabotage it for novelty, as they are prone to do. Unhappiness would become the new happiness. Also, there is absolutely no way to act in a way that isn't a detriment to at least someone or some people. The "best" actions that will produce the most happiness will always exclude other people, perhaps even cause their suffering. Not to mention, utilitarianism does not take into account the animal kingdom which is a huge blind spot and contradiction for a philosophical school that prides itself for its ethics. Utilitarianism, then, does not strike me as an optimal worldview.
Stuff on the internet DOES NOT END UP IN THE TRASH. It gets lost in the universe. You think too hard... You're smart, but you give up on everything so easy. Smarter people can recover things like this in the future.

Gratitude is not to be confused with graciousness, which means saying your “pleases and thank yous,” etc. Gratitude is not for the sake of others, but rather, it is primarily for one’s own benefit. Why should we be grateful? Because, for our own sake, it behooves us to see, fathom, and appreciate the good things in life as much as we possibly can. Happiness and meaning is there in infinite supply, if we can but reach out and grasp it. That's what I've found, anyway.
We are going start sending all our trash into space over the next 10-20 years. It's the only realistic solution. We have become materialistic, and there are just too many of us. 🎉
