Great video! Having only hunted in Utah, deer is much more gamey than elk here. I was blown away when you said it tasted like beef, but hearing the source of the venison makes sense. I too prefer elk over deer any day and prefer elk burger over ground beef (with beef fat mixed in to get 80/20). Love your channel! Keep up the great work!
I eat venison more than beef. And I love elk, when I get it. Like beef, there is a difference in flavor depending of the animals diet. Field(corn and grain) vs. forest(acorns and buds and roots) vs. a mix of field and forest. To me acorns give a better, richer flavor over corn in venison.
Best steak I've ever had is an Elk steak. Love my Iowa corn fed venison, but the Elk was 👌. AND, and, if you can get it, try some Bison. For me a close second to the Elk...
Agreed, the Elk was a terrific steak. We just cooked a bison ribeye, also very good. There's a vid of our bison vs beef taste test here: ua-cam.com/video/Ui6wu-kmNUI/v-deo.html
@@Redmeatlover Yeah, I'll take Bison and or Elk over beef any day when I can get it. That sweetness you get from the Bison and Elk 🤙, and lack of gamey profile you get with Venison depending on the diet of the deer makes it better to me.
I have access to both and I can honestly say that Mule deer is great because of the sweet nutty flavor it has but elk is really mild and will take on flavors. Never use sage than it will taste too gamey like it was drug through the sage brush.
True (not interbred with other deer species) ELK are grazers and only eat grasses like cows and this is why it taste so good. The elk in Texas and some in Colorado and Wyoming are not as pure bred as Montana elk. These sub species like in Texas will also forage like white tail deer, fallow deer, etc. The best Elk is from elks who naturally exclusively graze in the wild.
Mule Deer from the eastern slopes of CO will have a more pronounced flavor profile since they eat a lot of sage. Whitetail from Nebraska will have a sweeter flavor from being corn fed. So it does depend on where its from and what its been eating.
Thanks for posting this video. I've actually been wondering for myself. Do different cow breeds. Use ribeyes and do a taste test. See which cattle breed has the better steak.

Wow, great advice and now sounds like we have to do a comparison on venison based on different diets.🤔

I ordered venison filet mignon from Meat N Bone earlier today.
Both are great 👍 Blacktail Sitka deer’s one of my favorites

I enjoy both but Elk is the best!
I liked this video, that being said any animal in the deer family are considered venison.
