When I’ve ended up with a tangle I use pretty much the same method as you do…the temptation to try to follow the tread and pass through the yarn only makes it worse…it takes, as you say, a gentle touch and shake and most of all patience! My husband is amazed that I don’t give up and always claps when I finally get it untangled 🎉. I love working from the centre and wish all companies would leave the beginning strand out. Thanks for sharing I’m sure it will help a lot of people.

I have spent hours on a tangle to get frustrated and cut it. I didn't know how to ball it with a center pull on my hand, that's genius!! I will use that a lot from now on. I crochet every day. I have a sweater with Hali yarn that I stopped working on because when I frog it, it knots up on me. I'm going to try pulling the stitches first and finish that sweater. Thank you soooo much!!!!

Ive learned from your video that yarn is really much more temperamental that i thought. You have more patience than what i have for sure i would have taken the scissors to it by now

I thought everyone did it like this. That is the way, we've learned in school - years after my Grandmother taught me this. It is very handy when finding bags of yarns in thrift stores or get given yarn by friends and neighbors. Yes, it take time (and sometimes looks as one makes the problem worse *lol*) - but it works and is a lot cheaper than buying new yarn.

Yarn barf is one of the most frustrating parts of crocheting! I tend to pull from the outside now, even though it’s less efficient…it cuts down on my frustration! I love your tips! I’ve never wound a bobbin before, look forward to giving this a try. Oh, and I love your ‘helper’ that popped up towards the end of your video!!❤

Hi! Have you tried putting the skein on a stand up paper towel roll. It makes working from the outside a breeze.

I've been doing something similar when I have yarn barf but I appreciate the demo: it will definitely help tweak my method & improve it. What I didn't know how to do was to make a bobbin on my hand with the detangled yarn. Thanks soooo much for that demo! I just frogged a project this morning, creating a mass of yarn which would have been a nightmare to deal with! I followed along with you, making a bobbin on my hand, which resulted in this cute little "hank" of yarn that should be much easier to work with than the mass of yarn I had in my lap! Thanks so much for sharing your method of dealing with tangled yarn! It's going to save me hours of dealing with tangled yarn in the future! I'll have to check out more of your vids (this was my first one!)! Thanks again.

❤this! I’ve done some of what you said in the past with widening the clump, but I love your butterfly wing analogy! That helps so much! Thank you for this and for the frogging epiphany as well as the thoughts on the source of stitch tension. This is awesome.

It is surprising how gentle shaking works so well! Also when the the other end of the yarn becomes involved with the working yarn. It is helpful to look for that too and get that gently pulled away from the working yarn. I clapped when you finished!!

Paige. I watched your whole episode. Butterfly wings, gentle two pull and shake. I love the saying “yarn doesn’t like to be pushed around” and of course, if it isn’t working one way, try another. So I had this ball of 100% linen yarn mess about 100 yards. Before when I ever had a yarn mess, I asked my husband to help out or just left it. It made me nervous to even think about trying to untangle it. But your gentleness and wonderful instructions made me think I could do this. I started out with butterfly wings and gentleness on my mind even though I was tensing up like crazy. THEN it reminded me of when I meditate and of being mindful. It’s easier when just sitting and letting go but a whole other level to see a jangled yarn mess and be LOOSE. So gentle shaking, leaving it when I was ready to go out of my mind and then coming back to it actually WORKED. That ball of tangled hockles finally ended up in a figure 8 with a center pull. I am so proud of myself. Mostly I am thankful to YOU for teaching me another way to make sense out of yarn tangles and applying mindful meditation to solving real world problems. Oh. One last remark. You must walk on water because you were doing your untangling WITH YOUR CAT. You now have a new grateful subscriber. You are the best!

Also just happened to come across you Paige and so pleased I did. No tangled clumps at the moment but pleased to know I now have the solution. However, I was crocheting on my scrappy blanket while watching, when you mentioned applying the principle of being light not tight when crocheting I immediately put it into practice. I’m still blown away with the speed I am now crocheting, before everything was so tight and I wasn’t really enjoying the process at all. I can tell this is also going to make the blanket more drapey.
Thank you for all the time, effort and patience you put into recording this for us. Now that I’ve found you and subscribed I’m off to see what else you have posted🧶🧶🧶🙋‍♀️

I learned (the HARD way) that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again... And expect different results. Boy has that one been hard for me. I'm stubborn. Lol. Thank you for showing us this. I have a WONDERFUL yarn that I got from ICE yarns and this ONE skein continues to get balled up. I did cut some off. It got stuck in my I.V. while in the hospital. I tried to crochet with the rest and it simply continues to get balled up. Trust me... I AM going to use your method to keep my yarn untangled. I'm so glad that I just happened up on your page. I will keep watching you.

I like your figure-8 yarn bobbin, which doesn't require a ball band or anything else to wrap yarn around! I have a few of the Boye "yarn daisies", which usually can hold a bit more yarn than a ball band (which acts like a pencil when crumpled/compacted by the wrapped yarn); I've also seen larger 3D-printed plastic yarn bobbins on Etsy, but haven't purchased any of those yet. (Maybe for Mother's Day, though!)

      Paige,
this tutorial made so much sense to me. I am tired of battling knots and tangles!
You also taught me the best way to crochet….period. Gently, carefully, loosen muscles 💪🏼…
I am working a project by Ophelia Talks. It is The Snow Moon Shawl. It is beautiful!!! BUT, it is all treble crochet fans and trellis’. TC’s have given me such headaches! I end up frogging more than I crochet🤬.
But today, I approached my yarn and hook with a totally new frame of mind…I loosened my tension, I loosely (not too loose, not too tight) crocheted and I made the best and most comfortable TC’s ever. My arthritis has not been a problem today, while yesterday I was in agony. I have made at least 14 rows and have not had to frog once. I have been so happy. It’s a miracle.
I had to inform you that your detangling tutorial is way more than just tangles. It is the way of my crochet life 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so very much Paige for this gift you have given me ❤❤❤
      LeeAnne💋

Wow I would have quickly snipped tangle with scissors, but you did it and did not look hard. LOL lingo I did not know ... Halo, Frogging, etc. I've never played the video game 'Unravel' but bet they use this yard lingo in that game about yarn creatures. LOL "yarn does not like to be pushed around". You are right about muscles of arms, last year I tore my Rotator Cuff in shoulder (clumsy fall) I can do most anything with hurt arm, except I cannot scratch my back as my hand/fingers will no longer angle that way ... strange that a hurt shoulder muscle effected the twist of a wrist needed to scratch back so agree certain muscles you do not even think about in arm but there are many muscles in arm.

Thank you for your tips. I wonder why some skeins do this and others don't? I've come to the conclusion its because we've taken the centre yarn end out of the skein the wrong way. All skeins need the centre yarn to be left out for us. Would be so much easier.

If I only have to frog a little bit (back to the beginning of a granny square round, f.ex., because I'd rather start a new color than buy another skein of the same color), I stick my crochet hook in the loop coming up from the previous round; otherwise, I use a stitch marker like you do. (I've also used paper clips in the past, esp. before I had a supply of stitch markers.)

You are correct. There are projects that are good at holding onto woven-in yarn tails, and then there are yarns and projects in which the texture and stitch does not lend itself to securely hiding ends, such as slippery bamboo. It's in these applications that I will avoid cutting when possible 👍
