This is easily my favourite UA-cam channel. You're one of the few people I have the patience to watch just doodle with synths, because you have actual talent, which ridiculously enough is a more and more rare trait among musicians.
I thought I was the only one! I have one in the studio and this band came in and decided to use in on their album. They tracked half the guitars and figured they could track the other half next time and I had to tell them it's now or never because you'll never get the same sound out of it
@@elissitdesign You can save presets. It's more that it's quite unpredictable and is very sensitive to how you play. Playing the same thing into it again and again won't always get the same result. The software applies a degree of randomness and also makes certian decisions based on what you're playing and what you have been playing, especially for any of the granular/looping modes. I didn't mind at all! But ... Band: "Play that thing you did earlier it was great." Me: "Um ..."
We are on good terms. As long as it doesnt mind my playing i wont mind its. Have had too many longtermrelationships with effects where turning a certain button leads to the same predictable outcome. Pf. one function per knob. Boring. Though i have to say seq 3 and 4 and mosaic 3 really steadily rock in the same direction. Made 2 user presets. Sound quite the same everytime. And slowly everyday live creeps in… any new pedals out?
Microcosm came from the States last week (shame there is no UK retailer, more people here should be able to at least try this pedal). I am using it on EVERYTHING, but the same as here, on my P10, REV2 and OB6 (and Pro2 and 3). It sounds great in stereo, mono, its really one of a kind pedal. Just notice you need to be ready for a bit of randomness and happy accidents, as well as know that this pedal works the best with content that has fast decay, OR longer pads with some silence between notes. Otherwise, you will just build up noise. Great video. So far favourite modes are mosaic and tunnel.
This thing looks like an absolute beast -- thanks for sharing ! In the future, it would be helpful if you could show a little bit of the dry signal so we can know precisely what the pedal is adding/changing. Sounds amazing, as always.
Wow Matt, you were not wrong. A sure way to such beauty as Tomita & Eno, everything sounded lush like Japan, Gabriel & Bush in one, I'm sold. :) Thank you
I hope we reach a time when people finally remove the Microcosm from their sound. Every synth player on UA-cam is running everything thru a Microcosm and it's all the same vibe. "Hold down a key or pluck a string and sit back for 3 minutes and let the Microcosm take over and create your sound." This is the new shimmer reverb.
I know this is father's day, but I think this video deserves a shoutout to Mrs Johnson who I can only assume is kind enough to come in at regular intervals with food and water... because from the sounds of those two together, there ain't no way I'd be leaving that room except on a stretcher. Even then I'd still be exploring! :o
I think gear like that is great to get inspired, but it's so hard to include them in a song that consists of more that that sound and even harder to let them sound good in a mixeddown song, as they need such a wide frequency band. Everything else has to be arranged around that sound.
Some of the sounds can be too wacky but I see it as a sketch pad to generate textures. If you jam long enough with it you can catch some happy accidents which can become the basis of a track. Sometimes front row, sometimes as a bed of sound for other instruments.
I think that’s the issue with most effects and modern gear honestly. That’s why I just go back to classic spring reverb+analog compression for most Things 90% of the time. Sounds good and fits everything together in a workable way most of the time.
Nick Herman: I think figuring out what new stuff works is exactly the job of a creative. Of course, we can always just replicate what has already been proven to work, but in doing so you limit what new things you can create.
Cool Sounds! These sounds are as fantastic as "Monkey Magic" 's intro by GODIEGO from JAPAN. It's an old and famous song(78') in Japan, but I think your wife also knows ^^
How about some Matt Johnson Soundscapes - full LP release on bandcamp ? Should be able to knock it out in entire weekend :) Great music to help the kids fall asleep at bedtime.
Inspiring video Matt! So much so, that I had to preorder one!. Can’t wait to hear it though my prophet 5 and OB-6! I hope you use this pedal on more videos. Really tasty!
Learned the hard way the Bad things about the Microcosm. -Crackles on Sound even with the new update. (they have a software algorithm problem) -Kinda works only with short burst/stab Sounds (don't expect results with pads or drones) -Not real Stereo input ( TRS is not a real solution) Hologram is definitely cutting corners -It feels extremely repetitive FX, you'll get tired after 5 hours of use, maybe 1-2 weeks with it, and it will drain your Creative juices -Uber expensive for this issues If you have the GAS go for it, but BEWARE of these know Issues
Good to read this, I've had GAS for this pedal but a nagging feeling I might get tired of it. What puts me off it is I like to really hear the pure sound of whatever synth I'm playing but this seems to take over the sound and make every synth you play sound like Microcosm and everyone else who uses it.
Derek, yes much more about looping and glitchy, granular effects. It does have reverb which sounds great but it's not a dedicated reverb like the models you mention so they will always offer more in that department. 'More' meaning more models/algorithms, more tweakable parameters, more control etc. Regardless, and in the spirit of GAS, the obvious solution is to buy both ...
Like it a lot been eyeing this up for a bit. Think you pushed me over the edge. Regarding your link, Perfect Circuit does not appear to carry this product. Peace.
Hmm..not really. They typically used very carefully processed and altered very analog gear and lots of tape from the sound of it and what I’ve gathered. Digital modern stuff really doesn’t sound much like it.

Do you think the Microcosm could work well to use specifically with a digital piano? (For Piano, Rhodes, strings and some synth sounds) do you know of another alternative for unique expression that you can recommend?
Hey thank you so much! This is amazing. I wanted to ask. Is the sample you made from it one note stretched across keyboard or did you sample each key? It sounded great.
