- Over the years we begin to find and settle into our favorite pieces of guitar gear, and pedals are no exception, and it's a rare event when something new comes along and takes the top spot in our list of favorite gear. This week I have a new all time favorite guitar pedal, the Microcosm from @HologramElectronics

Sounds killer!
Does this not remind you of Daniel Lanois , Rick? At least on some level.
can you imagine David Gilmore in the 70's with that WOW
It's really interesting how that device creates the sounds it derives from the guitar input .. and how you as part of the musical " feedback loop " react and play against it creating more musical feedback to you !! It's like when you are jamming with good players and creating stuff on the fly with each other but this little box takes it to a different level ..
That actually makes me sad. I'm 61 now and played guitar in a few bands for 21 years. Now my fingers don't want to anymore and I sold all my equipment a few years ago (except for the BOSS Harmonizer which nobody wants for some reason). I so wish I could be young again and get my hands on this beauty. 💖
It’s not too late
Play one string. Just the top one!
Lighter strings, taking anti inflammatory stuff like reishi Tea, turmeric capsule, drinking aloe Vera, cbd infused comfry creams.
I’ll buy your boss harmonizer lol
@@sewerrat6038 Yes it is. Buying new equipment for thousands of $$ would be a waste of money for me. I'd rather invest in a new gaming computer. My current one is about 12 years old.
15 seconds in and 2 things are plain...:
1. I love the sounds in this video
2. Rhett has arrived at his happy place (literally)
I know I'm late to the party, but it seems like all UA-camrs have a UA Ox Box, so I finally pulled the trigger. It should be here in a few days. Then, if I can find anyone who has a good sounding IR of a JBL D130F, or a K120, I can do what I need to do. I am a total Fender/JBL guy! We aren't many. You'd be surprised what your Bassman or Bandmaster sounds like through a good old JBL.
@@CaseEJoanzagreed! I'm a lifelong (that's a long time...) total JBL fanatic! I play bass (Ric 4001) and have a pair of extra-heavy-duty D140 15" (a la Dick Dale) mounted in a 2X15 Peavey cab - always wanted a Dual Showman, but scored a '65 blackface BandMaster! What a sound!!! I heard Michael Bloomfield play thru a JBL equipped Fender twin with the Electric Flag and he was louder and clearer than Jimi (2nd bill that nite... 2 Marshall stacks) - my ears rang for a couple of days after that show! BTW, I got an "Elevenuator" attenuator from Acorn Amplifiers to keep stuff from falling off the walls when I play in my music room... ride that train!
Oh, and I love Chicago PD!
I'm from the Chicago area.
I love all these "weird" pedals coming out, like the Mood, Microcosm, etc. I just wish they didn't cost a fortune.
this thing is $450 and easily replaces a Mood and Blooper (and other weirdos). if you must have 1 "weird" pedal, this is the one you'll keep forever. it makes magic. it makes songs.. (maybe the blooper does a few things different, but i see no reason to keep a Mood if you have this).
Its only $450, but its like getting multiple single pedals. Price is reasonable.
It’s all “post-processing”. Just learn your gain staging and you can do it all cheap.
Focus on your room and electrical interference first if you have the option
@@Dungeon_of_Regret if you own these three pedals , you realize that it does not at all replace them... not even close
Try the Empress reverb, it's a bottomless pit of tones and possibilities.
Pedal: Blee-bloo-blaa-blee-blaa-bloo-blee
Me: *feeling old*
🤣
All the great song writers from buddy holly to howlin’ wolf were rocking one of these. Machines like this help turn average songs into creative masterpieces. I don’t leave home without one.
yeah, but it's music... wait, what? ...
You forgot the p's...You really are getting old!
I think it’s cool, a lot like a synthesizer, but for some reason, I like to be directly involved in making all the sounds that are coming out, with the exception of mild delay and reverb. Feeling like an old control freak. If it keeps playing while I go to the store, who needs me?
Rhett goes Ambient/DreamPop, and I LIKE it!
Two days later, after a case of Red Bull, a pound of coffee, and no sleep, Rhett emerges from the studio and faces the mowing of his new lawn, now 4 inches too long...
@@duncan-rmi I hate when that happens!
😛
Nice to see you in a room that matches the quality of your content. Well earned
Agreed, but I miss the look of the old basement/closet. I think I preferred the lack of natural light. 🤷♂️
Microcosm is life. No, really -- put a Life Pedal in front of it and you can open portals to new realities. Put a Golden Reverb after it and assure you travel to higher planes. I've had my Microcosm since the beginning, and it has so far exceeded my expectations I can't even describe. Especially after the firmware update. It's really helpful to watch you discover it because, even though I'm a veteran user, there are still new sounds to be discovered. Absolutely brilliant all around.
If you feed the output, into the input, it creates a black hole 💫
@@relevantinformation6655 I hate when that happens...
Not the first time I’ve said this on one of your videos… but, Mind Blown! There are quite a few reasons why I want this pedal, but probably more than anything else, it’d put a big smile on my face as soon as I’d start playing with it! Certainly this video did!!!
I really appreciate that you are making music with this pedal. Too often, demos of this pedal or something like the Mood are just a walk through of random sounds. Nice to hear a musical creation with it!
I ordered mine about a month ago. This is right up my alley. I enjoyed your enthusiasm for this.
Not sure if it’s the new studio, having the new assistant around, or the loads of gear, but it seems like the production quality of your videos just went through the moon Rhett...and that’s saying a lot considering how they looked before! Love what you’re putting out there my friend!
hey Rhett, ive had my eye on this pedal for a few months now. i hit the like button but i cant finish watching the video because i will spend money i dont have at the moment. your enthusiasm for this rad piece of gear just adds fuel to my burning desire to have one. love your channel, keep up the good work!
KILLER! You're getting so many cool sounds out of it, well done Rhett!
LOVE this pedal and the Infinite Jets! Sooo happy you’re featuring it! Need!
Just ordered one for August delivery, down the rabbit hole, as they say. I do ambient guitar and have been wanting one of these for so long and finally put my money where my music is. Thanks Rhett !
I genuinely can’t wait to see where you go creatively with this new piece of gear, Rhett. Beato hit the nail on the head with: “sounds killer!” Grace 🙏🏼
Best review of this pedal I've seen, and I've seen a bunch! Thanks dude
I 've been checking it out for a few months . Best latest pedal sensation for me. Listening to your demo, I have realized that it really shines with a volume pedal. great
If Pink Floyd had one of these back in the 70s, they would have solved all problems in the universe.
Hahaha!! I was thinking the same thing....
@Evan Hodge lol what the fuck is this comment?
No need, they had Rick Wright 🎵👍😍
@@calliopeshif7581 A troll. That's what it is.
@@bonusflaps1749 oh yeah I mean obviously it's a troll. I just think the troll should get some help because I feel sorry for them, seems like a real empty and broken way to live life.
Exactly my kinda pedal, I ordered one ... Can hardly wait for August :) Thank you Rhett
Great demo, after watching lots of other videos ofthe pedal, finaly i can hear what it’s really capable to do. thank you, and so interesting to hear that this is not sponsored
That sound at 11:36 is super PATRICK O'HEARN late 90's-2000's sounding. Just gorgeous...wow. Nice playing Rhett.
Took you long enough to make this! Absolutely incredible pedal, and great demo man.
I just got my Microcosm a week ago and I am just now wrapping my head around how vast this tool is! i am so excited to keep exploring!
I've one arriving next week, great to see someone else exploring it!
Loving that you're in the new studio. Moving from the basement room to this must be so inspiring and that means more great content for us 🙂
Great fun Rhett! Cheers!!
Digging the vibes of it so far...Wowser!!! Thanks Rhett...
Dope pedal, and really cool format!
Feels like we're walking that discovery road along with you.
Rhett: The perfect tool for you when you start scoring films. No brainer in that department :)
I ordered mine after seeing this video (now my favorite of your reviews). This is hands down my favorite pedal on my board right now. While there are others I use more often, this one is so amazingly versatile that it will take me months to learn and a lifetime to master. But the effects in the meantime are awesome even right out of the box.
Sounds awesome. Something that inspires new playing, ideas, and sounds is always great.
As of this moment: Reverb: 17 available for preorder, 94 in carts...Wow...
As of now, none!
And people wonder why UA-camrs get paid for demos.
I have a Empress Zoia on order, not sure if this video is making more excited about it, or concerned that I didn't get this. Lol.
part of the 94!!
@@LodvarDude microcosm has been that way for a while
Saw this on Andrew Huang's channel a while ago and it sounds amazing. These quirky, almost random effects are perfect for breaking a mind-block in songwriting. You put something into the pedal and something completely unexpected comes out.
Rhett, this sound is so good but your inspiration to create music is the coolest thing. Thanks!!
Wow! Thanks for demonstrating!
Nice for ambient, dreamscape and movie soundtracks. I love stuff like this. Enjoyed it. New studio looks good.
Excellent timing, Rhett! I just got mine today and I'm in the same boat.
With an investment of time and attention, a pedal like this...the possibilities are endless. On stage or in the studio. I'm down like four flat tires. Perfect way to introduce a pedal too Man. First run and with the manual. Great context. Rad content.
Enjoyed this. Like many others, I was a purist and eschewed Synths, and now love them and into (again) psychedelia and interested in the Korg Wavestate and Guitar Synths. No Limits. Yes, I love it. Thank You R.S. Happy Trails )))).
That thing is incredible! Cool playing man.
Love this. Has a lot in common with the Eventide Pitchfactor in certain aspects, but with more flexibility, layering capability, and more user friendly routing.
That said, I truly love the Eventide, but this would be worth delving into.
Mine is being shipped out to Scotland any day now. Positively dripping with anticipation.
I just bought one! Thanks man! It’s like the pedal that I’ve always been looking for!!!
Sounds great! Definitely looking into this pedal.
I can’t wait for mine to come in the mail! This pedal is nuts and it seems like so much fun to play with
New studio sounds great - voice sound is much stronger, mo better good, than prior videos - lots to be happy about!!
just pre-ordered mine july batch cant wait thanks for sharing this demo...........
Out of my wheelhouse, but I loved watching this video, and listening to the cool tones you made! :)
I find it hard to judge stuff here, because everything Rhett plays sounds awesome! This feels like a real "music writers" pedal to me if that makes sense. I feel like you won't find it on many average guitarists pedalboards, but for people writing their own music it looks like an amazing tool.
Great video! I totally agree, this pedal can open up new sonic horizons. I ordered one and I rebuilt my board around it! Amazing!
Wow, this seems different for you. Cool to see that. This reminds me of how I use Ableton Live with different filters, messing around to get certain sounds. The "messing around with sounds" method is a really great way to come up with something new, and the tools there are to do that with these days are amazing. Anyone with a keyboard/guitar plus software/hardware (like this pedal) can make cool sounding music. If everyone was making music, things would be better.
beautiful sounds, Rhett you should try the Helix effect OctoReverb, Flitch delay & Euclidean delay - routing the Legacy effect OctoReverb into the Glitch delay and a parallel path with the Euclidean delay and use your expression pedal to adjust several parameters on all three. You'll looove it \m/
Give me the helix patch haha
It's like having Bill Frisell in a box!
Nah... You can't put Bill Frisell in a box - but I get ya. 😛
It really does sound like a lot of the overdubs he would do, I wonder what he would think of it
@@cameronbrosius6941 I'm sure Bill would like it - or does. He'd use it in very subtle ways that didn't muddy up his complex phrasing. Frisell is amazing and he's a damn good guitar player too.
This is a great studio tool for building textures. I can see myself using it as like a sample generator and just messing with the audio in my daw. Really interesting!
Yeah that’s what I thought too, be hard to play this in a performance
Sounds awesome dude!!! We just got one of these...and holy crap this pedal is awesome!
Great tut...i just got one a week ago and learned a lot by viewing your tut
I really like your videos. They are so musically. Can’t listen to all this shredding anymore.
That pedal - I want it so much. I just preordered and hope it comes in September.
I like your videos best when you play. Your jams and creations are amazing!
Very cool! I love how musical that thing is no matter what you play. I had a tc electronic T2 reverb that was very unique, but on many of the settings sounded like trash. I have a video idea for you: easily creating drum tracks for guitarists who don’t have drums. I know this is sort of covered on UA-cam, but I would like to hear your perspective/approach. Thanks!
Okay, I bought the Strymon Iridium because of your review and I love it! Now I’m going to buy this one on your recommendation. 👍✨✌️
Neato stuff coming soon, Rhett. I'll have my Two Rock and SVH20, Marshall coming soon. Guitars are so much fun! The 2 Rock is a Gainmaster 35, dual 6L6. Can't believe how much headroom it has! It's like a 50W version of a Dumble ODS.
Yes! Yes! and Yes, reminds me of the Critter and Guitari Organelle, which is more of an instrument on its own, loving those granules. Great video.
Really cool ambient effect. I don't see a huge market for it but still really fun and nice to listen to.
Looking forward to hear what you find from this pedal in the next instalment...
Dude your videos are a joy for the eyes
Awesome! Just order mine for August batch.
This is a super cool pedal and I really enjoyed listening to it -- thanks for sharing!
Glad you are transparent about receiving the pedal at no cost from Hologram. You share that detail pretty early, but I really appreciate when content creators make that info apparent from the very beginning of their videos.
For an effect that bombed in the market (partially because it works best against a Rhythm-synced midi signal), try the Boss SL-20 slicer. Their patterns aren't semi-random, but they do some similar things. The leslie swirl on top and "harmoniser" effects are lovely.
Another old one - the Digitech timebender. That has strum-programmed delay patterns and keyed interval harmonisation, which is very cool. Add that to ducking echo, mmmmm
It will be fascinating to see what you do with this going forward.
8:07 Sold! Love big synth pads but my creativity comes from guitar and this is literally the pedal I think I've been looking for too D:
Earliest I ever been. Amazing video already my man!
I absolutely love that sound although, it sounds very, very much like the specular Tempus. They are both beautiful!
Dude, whaaat!?! That sounds amazing ;O
Sounds like they rolled a POG, Strymon Big Sky, and a DL4 into one. Looks super fun and I’m sure it does a whole lot more. Great video Rhett!
Just watched half of the video and I just ordered one :P Thanks for the review
I like the approach, learning with us 👌🏽
I am even more impressed with the drum track when you first sampled this.
I love pedals like this - for inspiration as well as having to play to the pedal's feedback, and the depth and endless range of options and sounds. These are up my alley, and I tend to categorize them as 'functional weird' - the oddball that's useful, and pulls you out of your box. The con I think of with pedals like this (having not really looked at it in depth or read the manuals for full capability) is trying to get the same sound twice, or how to document and store it easily. That's not always a bad thing, though - for improv as well as "I'll never play the same song twice with this" it creates an interesting performance art appeal. I'm motivated to learn more about it.
This, blooper and mood...... Years of beautiful sounds
Wow! This is amazing. One thing that turns me off, to an extent, with Shoe Gaze or atmospheric type music is the degree of compression that just quashes dynamics. The Microcosm solves that! In fact, it says "Bring it!" it takes it all in, turns it inside out and gives so much complementary, interesting output. SUPERB looking interface and design.
Very cool. So much of what digital tools have been chasing is precisely replicating the exact tone of some analog amp, pedal, cab, etc., and I've wondered when we would starting seeing more tools that allow musicians to craft something altogether new that doesn't just map back to some analog equivalent (I know they are out there, but they get a lot less attention than how much modeler X sounds exactly like amp Y).
I feel you there man. It feels like that last thing to do that was the digital delay lol. I know that's not true but it feels like it.
Like a tiny stripped-down shoegaze version of an old VCS3 synth, endlessly tweakable and a lot of fun. Great for the studio but takes a lot of practice to use live. Nice.
Best demo for this yet. Made me go from cool pedal, can’t afford it… to awesome pedal, next on my list to save up for.
Looks like you are so excited you haven't slept in days!! Great video Rhett!!
This is a great review. Thank. I've been eyeballing this for a minute. Got a new psychedelic rock project. I've been piecing together my effects and board for this specific project. I think it's a bit pricey for what it is, but hell that's what credit cards are for, right? 😳
I have one of these coming... also just got the Tomkat Cloudy. Does similar stuff... big time learning curve.
This had a Tangerine Dream feel to it, some amazing sounds and complexity.
Excellent video! This thing sounds amazing lol
a lotttt of cool sounds here. Portal from Output does a lot of granular synthesis effects like this within a plugin
Glitchy Paranoid ;-) Thanks for the video Rhett it's amazing !
Rhett if I ever see you around the ATL, be prepared for a bombardment of questions about guitars, amps, and pedals. LOL
This pedal is crazy. I'm digging it.
So cool how it sometimes gets synthy. Awesome sounds
That device is so awesome... but also way above my pay grade in terms of skill playing guitar. My biggest takeaway is that I lust for the sparkly double cutaway with P90s.
I bought way too many wonderful and less wonderful delay and reverb pedals, just to be able to create sounds similar to what this box is capable of doing. So yeah, I'm interested.
I can already imagine how it would sound like when combined with the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water. Pure MAGIC!
Clever pedal, I could explore for hours upon hours. These folks are based out of Knoxville Tennessee. The proper tools in the right hands could definitely produce some amazing results. I’m rather impressed.
A lot of that "atmospheric" stuff you were playing, especially the cleaner sounds, immediately made me think of Robert Plant's "Big Log,"
A box that puts elements of Laraaji and Robin Guthrie together in a way that sounds at least as good as either of them.
No wonder you like the thing!
It does make wonderful sounds.
For its price (which I looked up) it is outright incredible.
That was amazing, this thing is capable of harmonizing your playing on a higher level. But I have a doubt and a question:¿do I have to share royalties with Hologram Electronics in case I record my music using that pedal and I achieve a hit in the charts?
