How We Choose Our Roosters

  • It can be tough to decide if you want to have a rooster on your homestead. Once you become attached, it can be even harder to decide which roosters to keep. They can be fighting, aggressive towards people or children, or just beating up the hens. Whatever the reason, when you need to thin the flock a bit, it can be hard to decide who stays, and who goes.
Recently, we had to make the tough decision between Winston, a long time resident of the farm, and Murph, a newcomer on the scene, who showed a lot of promise. In this video, we tell the story of Winston,Henry, and Henry's son, Murph. It may provide some tips for you decide who you should be keeping in your backyard chicken flock. It may also provide some tips that can benefit the health of your backyard chicken flock.

I use to raise gamecocks. Most of my roosters were very tame and not man fighters. But other roosters another story. They don’t call them gamecocks for no reason. They will fight to the death. That is just what they are.

Nobody gets culled these days. I separate when a roo is fighting and will expand to a new flock in Spring. Amazing how few people in a small town raise chickens, but it's easier when you have two separate barns. I'm old and can't do much to contribute to my community, but I know chickens. Eggs will become valuable for barter.

My rooster selection criteria was very similar to yours. Disposition and genetics. I had a free range backyard flock and always kept 2 roosters. Fighting between them was minimal and when it did happen was only long enough to determine who was going to be the top rooster. I only had one rooster who had a killer instinct. A magnificent red but he literally would have killed the other rooster so that fight was stopped and the red rooster became dinner. Chickens have a lot of sex linked traits. So the two roosters I kept had traits that would identify which rooster fathered chick's I hatched out and I only hatched out eggs when I knew which of my hens laid them

If you have a particular hen that seems to be a favorite of the roos it’s a good idea to put a saddle on her to keep her protected. If she develops open sores she could die as the other hens, likely jealous will peck at the sores.

Just a comment about roosters. When I was an early teen I was gifted with three chickens. One was Charlie a mixed bantam of about ten years. The hen was a don’t know she also was old so no eggs. Finally one was still young and was putting in feathers. This turned into Honeysuckle she was a buff Cochin. My beauty. I loved them. I really totally loved my Charlie. He was the perfect gentleman always thinking of his girl.
Well we were gone one day and one of the gates was left open. I noticed as we arrived and did not think about it as Charlie did not wander. Then as we went in I heard the horrible sound of a chicken fighting for its life. Flying out the garage door, first I saw what had to be Charlie. I ran over he had a hole in his neck part of his comb was missing and an eye was gone. I was in shock. I thought he was gone.
Then I became aware of the noise. I got up ran across the yard and the little old hen was guts torn out .
I ran to were a dashund and a mix of about 25 lbs were working my honeysuckle
she was fighting bravely but would soon be dead.
Needless to say I jumped right in and stared kicking hitting and trying to get them off. Suddenly
Something flew over my shoulder, it was super rooster, Charlie.
We kicked butt and Charlie killed the larger of the two the other I gathered in a bag to take to the neighbor whose chickens they were.

My rooster is a welsummer bantam. I took a great deal of care when raising him alongside his sister. I raised them in the house and always responded to their distress cries. I fell asleep some nights holding them as they found the warmth of my hands more comforting than the wood chips of their cage. They remembered that and now I'm the only one that rooster doesn't attack. He comes up to me, does a little dance with his tiny feet while all puffed up, and lets me pick him up. He will attack my grandfather though like he's the embodiment of evil.

We have 2 rooster but one is a silky. He's meaner to the hens than he should be, not in mating but in general. Our other rooster is great with the hens, very very protective. He's awful with us. He will flog us at the drop of a hat. Right now I have a wound on my leg. My grandson has 3 wounds on his back. We want to keep him but it's nerve racking going into the run or coop to get eggs or do our chores. He will even attack if he is in the yard but not as bad as if both he and we are in the coop. If he is out of the run and he sees us going toward the coop, he will run down there to defend his territory. We want to tame him but we all are too afraid to try to pick him up. Not sure what to do. We do love him, We raised him, but he's mean. He is also great in a lot of ways. He really keeps peace among the hens and the other rooster. He is so gentle with all of them. He considers us a threat even though if we didn't care for them they all would die. Chickens are not the smartest. We need a rooster whisperer. lol

He has a happy temperament with people he knows but he's also wary of people he doesn't know which is good. He's really nice to the hens and they love him. He's extremely protective of his cailíní aswell. He's like a sentry, he once fought a Springer spaniel who was attacking the hens and he won ( thanks to his spurs, never cut a cocks spurs off ) We're hatching eggs now so it'll be interesting to see what comes out of them. I’m building a coop and run for my first chickens, but I haven’t got any yet because I fear violent behavior myself. I live in a town that lets you have chickens in your backyard. I planned on getting four buff Orpington laying hens as chicks, and if one turns out a rooster I would put a crowing collar on it. I want my chickens to be more like pets than income. I even plan on just keeping them until they die ,instead of needing the room. I’m retired and just looking for a peaceful coexistence, not sure now if I wanna deal anymore with violent pecking order. Being a pacifist,I constantly forget we’re still born with it. Like a lot of people,I think of a dream world, and move forward with doubts I’ll be allowed. My dreams of chickens don’t destroy my lawn, but my understanding knows better. I only learn from my mistakes,so I’m getting chickens. But they’ll have godparents if I’m not able.

You’re so right. My handsome, human-aggressive EE took on and ran off a grey hawk. Flogging it until it retreated. He always breaks up the fights between the hens, too. Sadly, he’s old, has a bum leg, and I need to kill him to make room for a younger one. Not gonna be easy for me.

I free range about 35 chickens of assorted breeds, of those 4 are mature roosters. They all get along just fine. The roosters each have their favorite females that they "protect" & Generally the chosen females stay with their rooster by choice. Other females float between the roosters as they please.

In my personal opinion, it’s best to seek out friendlier breeds as a start. However, sometimes having a friendly rooster can backfire once their testosterone kicks into overdrive. I’ve had many roosters who started out as sweet friendly babies, but once they mature, that just translates into them not being afraid of us, but still aggressive as hell, which makes them worse than the unfriendly ones who at least tend to keep their distance. I also find that it really all comes down to the individual bird. If you want a nice rooster, you may be better off getting a few, and just keeping the nicest one. You just never know how aggressive they’ll be until they’re sexually mature. I would highly recommend the ameraucana or araucana.

I have a odd question. I have a mixed flocked, full size and bantams all different breeds. I want to keep one rooster. When people breed do they separate the breeds? Does it matter if he mates with all the breeds? What about the size differences? Should I keep a bantam rooster only since I do have done bantam hens?

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  3 роки тому +1

You really want to keep bantams and full sized birds separate because the full sized birds can hurt the bantams. A full size rooster trying to mount a bantam hen can do some major damage. Adding a bantam rooster will only give your full size rooster a sparing buddy. I’d avoid that too.

Either they were really sweet and would hop into their wash basin to let me wash their feet before hopping onto mu head or lap or to come to me for food or company or they would be so mean and would run after me and peck at me and flare at me. Im willing to have a rooster and hens again but hopefully theyre nicer the 5th time around.

@@TheMindfulHomestead possibly, but at the retailer someone was moving chicks from tank to tank for cleaning and it looked a bit chaotic. Their brooders were wide open and side by side. High probability for error. Thus, our 90% became 60%.
We visited another local retailer and their system was vastly different. Beginning with 90% from the hatchery I'd expect (with human error) 90% to perhaps 75% accuracy at worst. Their closed brooder system seems to be ideal. There is no way to accidentally return a chick to the wrong brooder as the only access is to the unit being cleaned and the temporary unit. Human error might allow for a mixup if someone opens 2 brooders at once but the person managing them seemed far more experienced and knowledgable.
At the other retailer with open brooders side by side my guess is introducing a new employee (he stated as such) + the chaotic cleaning transfer leads 90% to 75%, or our 60%. At least they're healthy and they are all chickens even if they aren't the breed or sex we expected! Time will tell. Lol

    • @TheMindfulHomestead

Yea. Wing sexing chicks is only 90% accurate so every once in a while, a roo will slip through. It happens. Good that he’s sweet though. That’s a great trait they can pass down if you do hatch your own eggs.
For 5-6 roosters I’d say you need at least 50 hens. The rule of thumb is 1 too per 10 hens, but we’ve had issues with 2 Roos and 30 hens. So we only keep one now.

No they can't. Not unless they're born intersex. If one of a hens ovaries dies, she'll have more testosterone outweighing the estrogen, but she still has female reproductive organs, they just won't work (produce eggs). They only obtain rooster qualities like appearance and begin to crow a bit differently with smaller lungs
