I've had the very same experience ordering chicks from hatcheries. They know full well which are females, but they need to get rid of the males, so they toss one in if you order all hens, and 60-70% roosters if you order straight run. I don't mind a few around, as long as there are enough hens to keep them busy. If you have too many, they're too rough on the hens. And there's the occasional weirdo. I have one now that keeps breeding my ducks, and today I saw him chasing my turkey. He's looking more like dinner every day. 😉
I got straight run from someone off Craigslist. Ended up with 3 roosters and 1 hen. One of my roosters tried to mate with my female turkey. She wasn't having it. It was hilarious, she went after him so bad that one of the other roosters had to break it up. I have 6 pullets in my living room now, which will hopefully balance things out better later on once they're big enough to add to the coop.
I know this is an old video but I wish I could give more than a 👍 simply for the part about "freeing/releasing" animals!!! We recently had an incident near me where a group broke into a mink farm & released the animals. Over 10,000 (I'm not even exaggerating a little) were hit and killed on the road within 12 hours! It caused car accidents too. Dead of winter, any that weren't hit more than likely starved to death. I'm not a fan of fur farms like this one either but I wish people could balance out they're hearts with some brains/thoughtfulness. Your message really just made me thankful that someone with a platform spoke up and said it, with kindness and sound reasoning to boot!!! New subscriber naturally 😉
Hi from Ireland. I keep three flocks: Brahmas and Wyandottes for meat and two separate flocks of Swedish Flower Hens for eggs, each flock has it's rooster. Luckily we're rural so noise isn't too much of an issue. However, after hatching time we always have "spare" roosters. We eat them. When it comes to their characters, I've found that if you handle them daily (pick them up, make a fuss of them, mind to hold the wings firmly tucked and the rooster under your arm) and if they ever try to attack you, catch him and hold him firmly to let him know who's boss. You may get a few scrapes and minor injuries but they're unlikely to be serious. Hold him for around five minutes. I've found a couple of times doing this settles them down fine. My roosters are all easily handled and placid which is good. I love keeping them with each flock as I believe it makes the hens happier and keeps them safer...we have predators here so they feel safer. Great video, thanks. :)
I’m a first time chicken owner. Ordered 12 hens and ended up with 4 roosters and 8 hens. 😳. But I won’t give my roosters away because I do take care of my animals. We will have to get rid of a few but we plan to feed our family with them. Our chickens are 4 months old.
My female pullets died because the male cockrells wanted to mate with them and didn't want to. They had broken wings and legs and eventually died . Separate the males from the females when you see them mating. Until the females are fully sexually mature and laying eggs. Watch to see if the rooster is gentle or mean to your hens.
Any rooster tastes good after an hour in the pressure cooker. We thank ours. 🤷♀️ Primal human circle of life thing. It’s before the pretty package. The benefits of raising your own food is irreplaceable. You know what’s gone into them. Clean, good eatin’!
My excess roosters are going to be table food!!! Raised chickens growing up, and I'll butcher extra roosters when I see which one is top of the flock! and I'll rotate roosters every year, its why I did dual purpose birds, I don't care how many roosters I end up with...I know how to do ALL of it...
Extra roosters are what chicken dinner is made of. That being said, the one we kept is kind of an asshole, but he does his job. We got 40 baby chicks from him. We have tussled though and I had to teach him who was boss, but even then he still tries to go at me from time to time. Unfortunately, for him, I'm not afraid of him and will happily grab him when he tries to flog me. One tip, go out at night when he's roosting, grab him, and clip the spurs and nails. Dog nail clippers and a nail file are your friends.
My solution is to free range my roosters into the backyard. I have hawks and owls so not sure they will survive. Hoping the young roosters will eat my woods clean of ticks etc. I'll provide a separate house and some run under cover. My German shepherd dogs are OK with the birds, so fox, coyote and cats are likely to be killed.
I have 4 roosters and the 4th was added after a year to the flock they fought for a bit, I held him to the ground and everytime he would attack or chase the other roosters I would catch him and pet him even though he hates it 😅 he's much more friendly
We found ourselves with 2 roosters in our flock last year. A golden wyandotte, and a barred rock. Our BR was mean as hell so we wound up dispatching him ourselves at home. We did a lot of research beforehand, and our daughter helped with plucking and gutting... and seasoning. It was a whole family experience lol our other boy (Tormund) watches our flock of 5 and he's got the sweetest disposition ❤ I highly recommend dispatching and eating a roo if you cannot keep it, but I also highly recommend keeping a roo to watch the girls!
I never have problems on Facebook selling my farm animals etc . But I also use my extras as food as well for us or dog food , pig food, chicken feed too

As much as people hate it, we eat chickens all the time :) Its better to have a hand raised chicken, good nutrition, happy life with room to run. A great life and one bad day. Just my thoughts anyways. I always keep about three rooster to my 18-20 hens. They always break into groups anyways. But having a couple roudy boys has kept most predators out of the yard. One solution for too many roosters is caponizing, which means surgically removing both of their testicles at a young age around 6 to 8 weeks before sexual maturity. After caponizing, the little cockerel becomes less aggressive, does not crow and doesn't fight with other members of the flock. The reason for caponizing is that the capon gains a lot of weight . It will reach the size of a small turkey. Before Cornish Cross were developed, most farmers caponized their excess cockerel before sexual maturity for meat. Also capons were also used to brood young chicks as a surrogate mother/father.
The issue with caponizing for us is that you remove the ability of that rooster to procreate and replace old or undesirable roosters, and they will still get beat up by un caponized roosters.
I remember an old episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe goes out on a rooster patrol (pretty sure it was in CA) as they had so many released chickens and they were multiplying into huge numbers and becoming a health hazard to residents and traffic hazards. So glad you listed reasons for people not to do that. Thank you!
Fun fact if your Rooster/Roosters are aggressive towards you or other humans it’s bc they think you’re a threat. & you can change that action or way of thinking

That’s ok I have 60 plus birds and they all got along! Now I have 11 roosters but everyone has there spot in the flock no one fights to bad every now and then the boys will get into a scrap but never blood or anything crazy
I have had chickens over 20 years. I've bought from hatcheries, I've had broodies raise chicks, and in the last 10 years I have incubated a few small batches. I thought it was just my bad luck, but apparently it sounds the norm 🤷 So over the years, I have had to place A LOT of roosters. So far I have never eaten my chickens, so we try to find them a home with a flock. But I'm afraid some have ended up in a pot. And I only hope none have ended up in a fighting ring.

When the hens come out during the day, I sort my excess roosters into the coop and leave my two main roosters out (chosen for being most docile with the hens, I also have 30 hens so they split between 2 roosters just fine). Most people either dont have the time or the patience to sort their birds every day, but I love my roosters. I have a total of 6, and they are not aggressive and I have grown fond of each 😂❤ I definitely do NOT need any more roosters though! I am set for a long time lol.
About 3PM I heard the neighbor chickens in an uproar inside their coop so I went to check what the problem was. A neighbor's pit bull was nose to nose with a rooster with only the chicken wire between. The pit bull had ribs showing, so it was not by any means an inquisitive meeting. It was predatory. But that little rooster stood up to the dog while the girls cowered inside the henhouse. It was pure OK Corral. When dog decided the rooster wasn't accessible it lowered its head to look at me. No sound. Just a " I can take her" stare.

Soup chickens! They make great stock! I dont even raise chickens, but I take free rosters so I can make a bunch of really high quality stock that I jar at home. So easy and cheap!
I bought 6 "female" chicks and am pretty sure that 2 of them are roosters. 1 is crowing already and 1 is looking mighty suspicious. I'm watching the tail feathers. I have mixed feelings though. What is a good rooster to hen ratio? My buddy inherited a small farm. (Lucky guy) He has 2 roosters with 7 hens. All the chickens are very old but healthy. Last egg produced was two Christmas ago (2021. Been 3 weeks. No eggs.) 12 arche farm in the land bank till 2025. The act like pets. (The coop was really bad. Funny job for my Buddy and his wife. New straw. Apparently so many happy chicken sounds.) Crazy question. Have you ever heard of someone coming in to cull the entire heard for a price?
You failed to address the question posed by the title... I have three roosters in a flock of 12 birds. Having four hens... I ordered 8 hens and received 3 roosters and 5 hens. I only wanted 1 rooster at most... Can I keep two? All three? do I need to add hens?

Depends. If you’re breeding you’d need to separate them in groups and have one rooster per 5 hens. If you’re only looking for protection, I think 1 rooster will be fine.

First time chicken owner order 35 chicks got 30 female 5 males so happy my bantam are doing great

I think roosters also alert when they find food. Never owned one, but am interested.
They do. I have 3 of them. One of mine also crows over and over in the morning if I don't let him out of the run but that's because I've spoiled him.

Can hard boil 30 eggs in an Instantpot. …then freeze dry tor dog food. Or use for chickens esp if they are sick waiting to feel better to eat.

2weeks ago at an auction in Kentucky a semi rare rooster sold for $175. This is why you don’t get $2 chickens lol

1 rooster to 9 hens is a pretty standard ratio. We keep one rooster with 30 hens.

Depends. If you’re breeding you’d need to separate them in groups and have one rooster per 5 hens. If you’re only looking for protection, I think 1 rooster will be fine.
