How to turn orange wood furniture into pottery barn look-a-like! Easy White wash tutorial

- Here’s how I did it!
+ removed all the brass hardware & accents
+ scraped off all the old varnish with my carbide scraper
+ sanded off the remaining finish with 120 grit, working my way up to 220
+ applied @realmilkpaintco wood wax into the inside of the chest to moisturize & renew the wood! It made such a difference
+ generously applied #realmilkpaintco soft wax in WHITE to the outside of the chest in a circular motion
+ I buffed off the excess white wax with a clean lint free cloth - an old teeshirt would work too!
+ I polished the old brass hardware with some brasso & steel wool
Now… what do you think?!?! This was a client commission but I truly love how it came out. It gives the white wash look but with more protection with less work AND cost. Talk about a life hack, haha!
How much would would you pay for this piece?

I loved the natural color of the wood
I really hate the orangy wood vibe it used to be a thing when I was a kid I hated it then and I hate it now .. I was skeptical you’d achieve this with just that but you did and it looks great well done 👍🏼
Thank you so much!!!!
It looks great, but next time definitely leave the inside raw. Since it’s cedar, you want the natural oils free to do their anti pest work.
Love your work 🎉 far superior to all the "I'll paint it green or beige" girls out here. You deserve way more recognition as an actual restorer of wood furniture ❣️
Thank you so so so much!!!!
I was so scared she would paint it but I waited it out, so thankful she's done her research for better ways to refinish wood without just slapping paint on it
Doctor.... You saved the patient! You are such a talented furniture doctor!
Looks AMAZING! WOW!!
Thank you for showing the products used to make this happen
Of Course!! Here’s the whole list of products used amzlink.to/az0rLgKze16u8
i love this reuse not recycle =) personally i dont like whitwashing i am in favor of wood colour =)
Fair enough!
The orange is so much prettier than the greyed out pottery barn bland. Makes me glad wood can be refinished more than once. The inside looked good though.
I really hate the orange wood stain. It was ubiquitous once just like the pottery barn subdued tone is today. but to each their own!!
Give it 10-20 years and you'll have videos of people turning their millennial grey wood back into orange! It's all a cycle 😂
Absolutely priceless!
She did a good job
Thanks!
I prefer a dark stain cause it is still red after the white wax .😏😉
I love that weathered look
Me too 😍
So beautiful!!!!❤❤❤
Thank you!! ❤️
I loved the warm tone at the beginning.
Its so beautiful!
Stunning
looks like a great product! thanks
You bet!
Gosh, that looks great.
Thank you!!
Wow I love it. Going to use wax for my next project!
Yay!! its the best. Here's the links to the ones I used!

Not a fan of the orange, but also not a fan of the spotchy white, an even coat would be nicer
I don't like whitewash either, so idk why yall can't move on or not comment at all😂 It's like commenting on a recipe "oh well that would taste better without onions" well honey you aren't the one eating now are you?. Move on!!😂
The wood was nice all natural
Thank you!
Would have darkened it. Try reseen woodwashes.
I like the color before better
This looks lovely! I cant wait for orange and red woods to swing back around in the trend cycle though 😔
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you! 😊
Looked better before.
Perhaps in your opinion:). I think it looks nicer after ! All depends on the look you’re going for.
Haha to each your own! My client wanted it lightened with a white wash and I made that happen :) however if your style is rustic and cabin-y, then i could see how you’d prefer the original!
Agreed
I think the new vibe will be looked at like a fad sooner than later. Good work though.
@@kirktravis5780 touché! I just do what my clients tell me to do 😂🤣
CONSIDER: Larger feet, potentially hairpin legs (easy enough to change later). I’m not a huge fan of brass, instead I’m obsessed with matt black cast iron (not hammered), however russet iron would work nicely too. Brass can be too girly for me if it’s polished. My true love is pewter (I think it’s the Irish in me) but sadly that’s not usually an option for utilitarian hardware. lol
This is better than pottery barn
Thank you!!
It was transformed from something beautiful into a sad beige box...😢
Hahahaha it’s not that deep and it’s what the client wanted
@thefurnituredoctor totally understand. But God I hate the current beige trends going on right now..
I thought it looked hideous before and looked gorgeous after.. It’s really a matter of personal taste
Glad I'm not the only one to think that
I get why people hate when wood gets covered with chalk paint, but come on… this was so fucking ugly and outdated before and looks nice and modern now. Also, if anyone ever wants to refinish it again, it’ll be much easier to sand and restain.
What are the products you used 😊
No idea what potter barn is but the end result is beautiful 😍
Pottery Barn is a store here in the US
Why do yo go for temporary trends?
Did you take wood shop in high school or did you have a good dad like me except that you paid attention?
Better than the original but I personally don't like the end colour
Is there a spray that helps strip the varnish quicker ?
yes! there is klean strip or citri-strip, but i dont have my garage door open during the winter so my ventilation is minimal. thats why i chose to scrape!
"No harsg smells" that's the goal 👏
🙏
120 grit is really fine for removing finish. Should use a courser grit because the finish will just gum up the paper and take way longer. Should start with 80 or 100, it will remove the material way faster. Then do 120, 150, 180, etc. 220 seems rather high to me but I'm not familiar with the wax you used and imagine it had a recommended finish it says to use.
We usually stopped at 180 grit because the difference between it and higher grits is not really noticeable and can start affecting how the wood takes the finish.
Im so glad you didnt paint this!!!
Same! ❤️
I love how the wood looked after the first wax. Congrats on (I’m assuming) another sponsorship!
Thank you!!
Love the after. .. looks fresh and perfect for a cozy space ❤
Thank you!!!
just white wax? wow
Yes
But it looked better before, took all the character out of the wood
I just do what my clients pay me to do
I love what you did but I like orange furniture I'm a weirdo
thats ok we are all weirdos in our own way
I think you ruined it . Pottery Barn is totally gross .
Is that a Cedar Chest? Do not mess with Cedar.
lol why not
People actually prefer that look? Is this part of the beige moms thing?
Didn't like the before, but don't like the after either. Hate the white wash. Reminds Me of a coffin.
interesting
@@thefurnituredoctor I think because it's a trunk that was the first thing I thought of. Cedar is always that orange/gold color and very recognizable. I mean u look at it and say yeap that's cedar. But what u did makes it unrecognizable as cedar and I just saw a wooden casket at first glance.😬
tired of this beige trend..looked terrible before AND after lmao
Vegan oil. 💚
The best!
