Takeda once again proves that he is THE unsung hero of Haikyuu! He doesn't try to influence their decision, he just lays out the facts: "These are your options, this is what you'll be sacrificing, choose the path that you won't regret down the road." Having someone with no athletic background so close to the team gives them a perspective that they never would have had otherwise, and it clearly leaves an impact on the group whenever he speaks. Not to mention the fact that Takeda is the one who got Ukai on board!
Season 2 is a BIG step up in terms of overall quality. I'm confident that it will surpass whatever expectations you may have!

Furudate took that whole "will third-years retire or not" debate rather seriously, interviewing third-year players on this subject and asking to share their thoughts. I also really love how Takeda delivered it here

I get u. For sports anime, I would like to watch the reaction from people who actually play the sports becuz they not only know the rules but also understand what the players on the court have been thru in their journey. Most shonen anime reactor don't know the rules n only react in the heat of the moment. But this is not shonen anime, it's sports anime. So I prefer people who actually know the sports well to react to it. 😊

To answer Adam’s questions, yes, Spring Tournament/Spring High is the more prestigious one because that’s the one that is volleyball-only tournament and sports scouts would be there for the nationals/finals as well. Inter-High is the multi-sports one.
The third-years aka seniors usually would drop out of team since they need to get into preparation for college exams (because school years in Japan begin in April instead of September, meaning college exams would be around the same time as Spring High Nationals) UNLESS the seniors are planning to go pro for volleyball after high school, then there will be a high possibility for the third-years to stay and continue to compete in Spring High. This could be decided by the players themselves.
College exams are huge for students in Japan because it’s not like in the States that you could take the SAT and apply to several schools. In Japan, you would normally need to get through a general college exam AND another exam from the very specific school you’re applying to, meaning A LOT of preparation is needed especially if you’re a third-year because you need to know which schools suit yourself best based on your strengths and interests and focus on both the general exam and school entrance exam. To put it simple, if you apply to University X and University Y, you need to prepare yourself for those two schools’ entrance exams and the general college exam. If you failed both schools’ entrance exams, that would be the end of it.
When the teacher was trying to tell Suga that he should quit volleyball and focus on his studies, honestly I don’t blame the teacher because first of all, Suga is in the advance class meaning he has good grades (same with Daichi). Second of all, he’s not even in the starting lineup for matches, and it’s pretty obvious he is not going pro after high school. So having him and Daichi decided to continue staying on the team is a HUGE decision that they have made.
Even if you decide to stay on the team like Suga and Daichi did despite the fact that they do plan on going to college (unlike Asahi who originally has no plans on going to college), would you really be able to fight over the stress of risking your academic future at such a young age? Especially when all of your classmates around you are preparing for college exams? Personally, I’d be very scared just to imagine it.

I just realized something: both here and on the first episode, the gym scene, it starts with Kageyama being alone playing volley, on his own, until Hinata bursts into the gym. And then the rest of the team joins. I know it's all narrative necessities but like, it's so poetic and so beautiful that image of Kageyama being alone until Hinata and Karasuno appear.

  • @Quarkmire
    @Quarkmire 11 місяців тому +108

I also wanted to add on to Sarah's full circle moment a bit - one very underrated part of this episode is that this is the first time Kageyama is navigating defeat not alone but with a supportive team. His serving must have obviously been a coping mechanism he's picked up before but clearly, Hinata yelling was the full cathartic push he needed to just let go.
As someone who's clearly never had anyone feel with the same pure intensity as he does about volleyball, it must have been such a relief for him to finally "let go" in a way he's wanted to all along, and actually work through a loss instead of bottling it up. Hinata as well - he may have had supportive friends but never a team, and nobody who understood his absolute monster hunger to play volleyball the way Kageyama does.
It's beautiful 😭the way Hinata and Kageyama pretty much help each other process defeat for the first time. Both validate each other. They're kids, just 15 year olds, and these are such foundational lessons for them.

This is one of the reasons you see so many people stay close friends after the have been team mates. These kinds of experiences are hard to find let alone have someone else to go through them with. Both the highs and the lows. When you hear team mates talk about the good ole days, yes the winning is fun. But what people really remember are the experiences that you share, the venerability you have with those people.

Not sure if this was ever mentioned during your previous reaction. Throughout the series, we see players refer to Ushijima as Ushiwaka. This is not just because Ushiwaka is a combination of his first and last names (Ushijima Wakatoshi), but also because Ushiwaka is the name of a famous folk hero in Japan.
A good analogue for the west, would be if the captain of the champion Volley ball team was a wing spiker named Arthur. Sports magazines would have a field day calling him "King Arthur", with his team equated to the knights of the round table, and every spike he made being the sword of excalibur.

Most 3rd years student in "not so high level" sport school usually leave the club after the interhigh to focus on university entrance exam. The exam was one of the biggest event in country. A couple of weeks ago, I clicked on the first video of Sarah's first watch through on a whim, expecting some neat volleyball facts and not much else, however I was drawn in by how she immediately bought into the characters (as well as neat volleyball facts) and I've been binging that series and this one since (I caught up just at the right time haha).
You both bring such insightful perspectives to the show, from Sarah pretty much hitting the nail on the head as to how Hinata should develop his game from nearly the first episode, to Adam straight up soulreading Tsukki within 5 seconds of him being on screen, it's really cool to watch through. Not to mention Sarah's incredible grasp of all the names that had me kind of shook and Adam trying his best. And as an Oikawa fan (this is 100% one of my red flags) I think both of you ended up with a pretty accurate perception of him. Very intelligent and intuitive player who is very keyed into his teammates wants and needs, while also being an insecure twerp who takes it out his issues on Kageyama. In another story, the talented yet ultimately ordinary setter facing off against the raw talent of people like Ushiwaka and Kageyama with sheer hard work could've been a very compelling protagonist :)
Finally, as someone who connected to Yamaguchi probably more than any other player on Karasuno, it makes me happy that this was the moment that got Adam. Looking forward to S2 :) Sorry if this is kind of long, finally caught up and there's been a lot I wanted to say lol

14:12. Im a 5’7 setter. I do top spin serves & hybrid floaters. I dedicated one summer to do 100 serves everyday till I got to dominate it. Even when I would be with my friends and show up late at home I would realize that I haven’t done my serves for the day. When I got my first ever ace, that’s the moment I was hooked on the game. My thoughts were, I took my 100 serves for 90 days till I finally got 1 point. That’s where the hunger started. That’s where I stopped confirming with a good dig and a decent set. Where I would fight for my spot, knowing every coach would either bench me or make me a defense specialist. I’m glad I deducted so many hours of my life to that.

The academic competition is in large part a factor of the university admissions process. While in the States almost every student that wants can find a college to go to, in Japan each school has its own admissions exam, and if you don’t pass, you don’t go. So Japanese high school seniors focus on the one or two schools they really want to attend (and that they think they can get into) and have to study hard for that school’s exam.

Hey Sarah and Adam! Not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but to help scoring and prepping for this draft, the Haikyuu manga does have a canon point level stat sheet for most (if not all) the characters who play (and even some that don't!). I also haven't the feintest idea how drafts work but i have to assume some objective points per character have to be added. Hope this helps!

Interesting fact : Among high school players, prospects that the media and clubs are interested in
will join a V-League club just a few weeks after Haruko (Spring Tournament),
which is held on the first week of January every year.
this is another reason why Haruko is the most important festival and gateway
for high school students playing volleyball in Japan.
because it's a stage where you can become the REAL professional volleyball player.
As we know, volleyball is a winter sport so
it's possible for newcomers who joined V-league in January to play right away.
Or, some have already signed with V-league clubs before Haruko.
(For example : Kasai Riri, who signed with the team Toyota of V-league
as soon as she graduated from high school this year.
She attracted the most attention at this year's Haruko
with her destructive performance and excellent leadership that reminded me of bokuto of Haikuu.)

to explain the third year thing it is very common for players to step down for the seocnd half of their third year especailly if they aren't at some powerhouse school that is seriously competing for nationals. That second half it's not just the homework but also the studying for entrance exam test that are super competitive and determine what colleges they can get into. So anytime taken away from that can be viewed as time wasted. Karasuno is not a traditio nal powerhouse and they just finished top 16 of the prefecture which is still a ways away from the 1st place required to even reach nationals. That's what makes this choice that much harder especailly for daichi and sugawara the expectation would be for them to step down in most teams

Things I love about this episode: 1. that even though it's subtle, we see Kiyoko having to think about her presence on the team and whether she wants to stay on, alongside the other third years. She's so important to the team, and it is great as a buildup to later episodes, when we see more of her.
    2. Suga's "I don't play volleyball for merit" is extremely cool.
    3. That cut (20:38) from Oikawa, realising that he's going to lose this match, to Hinata, who's having to come to terms with having lost. It'd be so easy to *not* remind the viewer that even the people who just beat our team are vulnerable to losing at that point, and let us wallow in the Karasuno players' feelings.
    4. The running and yelling scene is both so funny and so moving. I want to say something like "they're teenage boys, of course they don't have better ways of dealing with those feelings", but I'm probably old enough to be their parent and running and yelling sounds actually pretty effective.
I started watching this series because I had a pile of boring paperwork and I wanted something light and fun to distract me, and now I've: cried at it several times, cried at Sarah crying at it, and now cried at Sarah crying at Adam crying at Haikyu.

Coming to Adam's defense - I could see his reaction to Daichi's words regarding leaving the club, and I knew he meant that he disagrees with Daichi when he said "I completely disagree" - but I also laughed at Sarah's reaction to that (sorry Sarah! 😆)
I am somehow satisfied that Adam shed a tear in the last episode of the season. It was probably built up until now and I am happy that it happened at the Yamaguchi - Shimada talk, where it was not expected by most people. It almost seemed as just a minor talk but had such a huge impact. Haikyuu!! does these little things and scenes so well - and I love that.

As for the question at the end of the video, I think both events, the one they just lost and the spring tournament are volleyball-specific competitions. Each competition has regional prefectures and followed national competitions, so every time they need to get a spot in the Miyagi Prefecture before they can enter the national competition.

The three major national competitions for Japanese high school students are as follows
In order of the month in which they are held
    1. Inter-High School Championships (June preliminary rounds, August main competition)
National High School Athletic Meet (more than 25,000 participants in more than 30 events)
Venue changes every year (rotating among prefectures)
2.National Athletic Meet (August qualifiers, October main games)
The National Athletic Meet is not depicted in HIQ, so it is omitted.
3.Spring High School Volleyball Tournament (Preliminary round in October, main tournament in January)
All Japan Volleyball High School Championships
The venue is fixed at Tokyo.
Incidentally, winning these three tournaments is called the Triple Crown, and only about 6 girls and 5 boys have achieved the Triple Crown in the past.
Since the Spring High School Volleyball Tournament is a championship, it is considered higher than the Inter-High School Tournament.
In 2011, the tournament changed from being held in March to January, allowing third-year students to participate.
The team has become more complete, and the players' commitment to "this is the last time," is very moving to those who watch.
Some sports position the Inter-High School Championships as a championship, so it is difficult to make a general statement, but it can be said that the Spring High School Volleyball Championships are superior to the Inter-High School Championships. (Both in terms of domestic recognition and the motivation of the players)

One thing about a lot of Asian (and East Asian countries especially) education systems is that a lot rides on a singular exam to get you to the next level of education. Some sort of remnant from imperial court systems of ye olde when court officials were appointed/allowed entry by these singular exams. That's why college entrance depends so much on how well you do on that test. Cram school is a very normal thing to do there, because school itself may not cover everything. That's why the teachers' concerns stem from a very honest, good place; the third years are giving up time they could be spending on improving their exam knowledge for that singular exam. None of the third years are going pro, and Suga especially is a non-starter. Daichi and Suga are in the college track classes to begin with, so that is their goal outside of volleyball. It makes their decision to stay that much more impactful, knowing that they are giving up important time to attain something they really want!

Since Sarah's journey in volleyball is still going and Adam's journey as evolve from player to coach, it's normal to feel more emotional toward scene that bring out nostalgia. He can relate to different characters and it's nice to see the different perspective. What a journey its been through season 1 =) I legitimately wait on bated breath for each episode reaction to come out, I love hearing your perspectives on the players, the plays, the dynamics and certainly the way you can both relate to and validate just how effectively the anime really presents it all, its been a great watch so far and I cant wait to see your season 2 reactions

Excited for y'all to start Season 2! Imo episode one of Season 2 is, weirdly, one of the best episodes of the whole show!

It’s a simple line but it’s deep. That’s hours and hours of dedication

For picking players for this upcoming draft, technically you have "SEEN" Ushijima play in this episode. I believe that he should be on your drawing board as a pickable player.

I've always enjoyed haikyuu because I used to play soccer as a kid and teenager so I relate to a lot of thing in the anime / manga
I can't imagine what is like to this two

Would you guys ever consider reacting to the openers after the end of each season? Mute the music of course or post a time stamp for viewers to follow along in another window.

I never played sports but I relate to that moment with Shimada and Yamaguchi so much because I've played marching band/drum corps for nationals.
We sacrificed a year of practicing, even more if we count from basic practices before officially join as regulars, only for 12 minutes of a performance in the competition. If we don't get good score then it's over, if we get to finals then we get another 12 minutes of performance. Only for those few minutes, we spent sooooo much time and efforts.
Especially when I spent my time as a coach, meeting past the midnight, coaching during practices and outside of the practices time when the players needed more time are everyday jobs, while attending college.
But it really paid off when I saw my players doing great on that day. It was hard to describe but Shimada's words really hits me..

😂 Sarah looked absolutely scandalized at 9:05 when she thought Adam disagreed with Suga. That look of betrayal, I was afraid this would rival the Great Argument of Oikawa's Character with the way Sarah looked ready to arm herself
