I Have A Bad Feeling About This | My Relationship With Star Wars Before Episode IX

  • At this point, it seems the question isn't IF The Rise of Skywalker is going to suck, but how much. How the hell did it come to this?
    -----
I feel like I should have prefaced my comments about the Special Editions. I don't like them in the traditional sense. They're weird, awkward movies. Lucas changed all these things that didn't need to be changed about the OT, but didn't fix any of the actual mistakes the films had and that's bizarre. I don't like them for being good movies, but I must admit, they are fascinating to watch in a "What in the world was he thinking when he did this?" kind of a way. They're cinematic curiosities that I can't help by wonder about in the same way that when you see a car wreck on the side of the highway, you can't help but slow down and look at as you pass by.

Go watch EFAP episode #60. They go through the entire leaked script, taking turns. It's hilariously awful - there are 5 separate fetch quests *in the first act of the film*, and 3 separate lightsaber duels *before the end of Act 2*.
Be warned: the livestream is *very long* and there's loads of commentary (the video itself is almost 12 hours long but the leaks are only about 3 hours of it). I promise it's amazingly entertaining, but its several hours of 5-6 semi-buzzed guys reading an incredibly stupid leaked plot summary.

      @garym6315 5 років тому +4

To be honest, I think it was always gonna end that way, whether RJ came onboard or not. We all went in to ep7 with theories about how the films would link, how we might see Luke or Leia on Coruscant, showing us the political structure post Ep6, the new Jedi temple and their philosophies, merging the trilogies. What we got was something completely standalone that wa a retelling of ep4. We seriously were given the empire and rebellion with new names. After that I went in to ep8 with zero expectations cos I knew it wasn't being made for the fans, it was a bunch of new films made for the casual cinema goers with lots of reimagined moments for them to get nostalgic over. Clone Wars and Rebels are made by fans, FOR fans and expand Lucas' mythology. The movies are just the old films with a 21st century coat of paint.

The first films I loved was Star Wars. Every weekend I would put in one of the three for a solid year. I spent all my allowance on toco bell when they had ep1 early release stuff. My last hollow web costume was Luke. I was illiterate until I was ten years old and then I heard there were Star Wars books and within 2 months I taught myself how to read just so I could read them. I got a library card only for Star Wars, it was through Star Wars I found anime and video games. The only movie to this day I have seen twice in theaters is the force awakens. I used to talk for hours with friends about Star Wars and be happy. I stayed up late after work, with college finals the next morning just to go see TLJ opening night. And then I have spent 3 years mourning the loss of the legends that made me who I am.
It’s very simple. Star Wars died in 2012 it just took me 4 years to learn this. I miss Star Wars. The last Jedi was an abomination. And I never thought I could hate Lucas films or Disney, but that is what TLJ and how they didn’t muzzle ruin Johnson when they should have did to me.

I watched the original Star Wars as a child. It's effects and adventurous story blew me away.
I'd read the story ahead of time but it's impact was more than anything I could have imagined.
As I got older, I appreciated the next few movies, but never became a dyed in the wool fan as such.
The prequels I could have lived without but they didn't dim my memories of the first three movies.
I played various Star Wars video games including KOTOR et al. These connected me more with that universe in a philosophical way and I think I appreciated the universe more as a consequence of that. It was at that point I would enjoy the idea of being a force wielding person, rather than simply watching it on a big screen.
When a new set of movies were announced, I was quietly optimistic and interested to see where they would go, as I knew they had an immense landscape of possibilities to play with.
I came out of Rogue One thinking it was a good filler of a movie, okay but nothing special. Then the force awakens came out and I was very disappointed with it. It seemed to lack any imagination, and a planetary weapon that needed to suck energy out of a star made a nonsense of any kind of physics, so it immediately took me out of the movie. Solo's death was telegraphed so far in advance that it wasn't a surprise at all, nor was it interesting in any way. It was all very two dimensional to me. It was mediocre but didn't influence my appreciation of Star Wars as a whole.
I held out some optimism that they would do something more interesting and profound with The Last Jedi. It really wouldn't have been hard to do. When I got to see it, it was a mockery of a Star Wars movie. It's corrupted so many ideas within the universe that I don't think it's recoverable. The story was stupid, with idiot characters doing idiot things for idiot reasons. Any warmth I had for Stars Wars and it's characters died with that movie.
I am not going to see the next one. I will watch the reviews to find out how badly they finished this franchise.
I do appreciate you taking the time to watch it so I don't have to. I'm sorry they did this to something you loved. It's unforgivable as far as I'm concerned.

sigmata0 Well said man. I agree with everything you said. Star Wars is my childhood. I grew up with it and still love it to this day. The prequels aren’t as good as the originals and that’s obvious but at least they had a story. Plus the ideas and world building were amazing. Episode 3 was overall my favorite prequel film. I mean come on, Order 66, Anakin becoming Vader. Pure amazingness. 1 and 2 were ok. 2 was the weakest but again, the story is what mattered. And KOTOR was the best game out there. Good times. When I first saw the two sequel films, I was just full of disappointment. Identity politics and all that just ruined it for me. And with TROS coming out, idk if I even wanna go see it. I want it to be good. I do. But I just don’t want my childhood getting any worse.

Society has changed. I would keep your great memories, embrace the old Star Wars you loved, and cherish them as they are. Separate them from the crap Disney has done; just let it go. I have needed to let it go, along with Star Trek and every other franchise I loved recently. I don’t know why they did it but they did.

I don't expect you read all of this, but I completely understand and sympathize.
I've grown up a fan of Star Wars, and it wasn't because of my parents, in fact, they weren't fans at all. My mother didn't care for those type of films and my dad was a sport and fitness junkie. I became a fan, weirdly enough, through the Phantom Menace, which my cousin had on VHS and I used to watch it whenever he brought it over my gran's house. I also had the original trilogy, but I hadn't grown appreciative of older films at that point in my life. I actually saw the original trilogy as more of a TV series to the point I'd ask to watch "Star Wars: The Movie" and was disappointed when they'd put the original trilogy on, not understanding I wanted to watch the Phantom Menace.
Years later, Attack of the Clones releases and I watched it with my uncle. I really enjoyed it and started to understand the continuity of it all (though I was confused why Obi-Wan looked like Qui-Gon and Anakin looked like Obi-Wan). I went back to the original trilogy and realized how amazing they were and became a fan. The years went by, Revenge of the Sith came and went , I loved it. I started to miss the franchise, but not enough to watch the Clone Wars which I at that point didn't like and I also became more critical of films and turned on both the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. But then as I approached High School graduation and Disney announced new movies, I got excited again.
I was excited as is, but in 2014 I started college and made the best friends I ever had, including my best friend whom I still see regularly. It was these friends that made the hype for the Force Awakens truly something special. I had grown up bullied for my mental disabilities, liking superheroes and preferring to stay in doors reading and watching films instead of going outside and playing the same sports that everybody else did. But college gave me friends that A. Were more mature and B. Were on the same course as me, thus naturally had a love for film, like me. We saw the original teaser trailer in 2014 and for the entirety of 2015 were abuzz about the Force Awakens. We had theories and ideas which we thought would have been great, but we also wanted to be surprised. "Counting down the seconds" was our motto. We even forced our class to leave late for a field trip because the tickets went on sale that very day and we bought those midnight tickets as soon as possible because we knew it would sell out. It had dawned on me how much of a cultural significance it had. It wasn't just a movie, it was an event.... It was an experience. I went back and watched all of the Clone Wars and loved it, and if Rebels was any indication, Star Wars was in safe hands with Disney. Even though Battlefront (which I did not play due to lack of campaign and I'm not an online gamer) was severely starved for content.
December 17, 2015. I woke up never more excited to see a movie, my grandfather came to pick me up and drove me to my best friends house. And on that day, me and my 5 friends watched all 6 released Star Wars films. Such an amazing day filled with nothing but good memories. I miss that day. We laughed and joked, discussed theories, we OF COURSE ordered pizza, best day of my life. And Return of the Jedi (My favorite) ended, we were cutting it short, but still got in one last group hug. We made it. We jumped in the cars, drove down to the theater and the line was huge..... Luckily we were at the front somehow (surprising since we cut it so short, fanboy determination I guess), everyone was dressed up, the atmosphere was incredible. Then the movie began, continued and ended. 3 of us hated it, 3 of us loved it. Luckily I was in the latter. (I felt so sorry for my friend who liked it because I was staying with my best friend, the other guy who loved it, and he had to go home with 3 people who spent the early hours of the morning complaining). Since then, one of those friends gave it a second watch and changed his mind and loved it. And whilst I do admit it has problems, mainly the copy and paste of a New Hope, I still saw it as just a massively fun film.
We were still abuzz about Rogue One and my best friend actually thought it was gonna be even better than the Force Awakens since the films announcement, although the hype couldn't beat the hype we had for TFA. He was excited for the war movie angle, I was excited by the director seeing that I'm a huge Godzilla fan. We graduated and went our separate ways to different universities, but we still decided to see each other in 2016 and still had some theories we'd share for Rogue One. We again got midnight tickets, even the one who wrote off Disney Star Wars after TFA gave in. We went together and, again, mixed results. The people who didn't care for TFA actually loved Rogue One, but this time me and my best friend were the ones who came out going "meh". It had a lot to like, the third act final battle and the Vader slaughter scene. But the first act was a mess, the second act was boring and the biggest problem, there was absolutely no character in that film.
2017 was filled with some excitement, not hype persay, but I liked the trailers for the Last Jedi enough, but there was no more counting down the days, no more fan theories. It was now just another movie. But when me and my best friend tried to arrange another group midnight showing, some of my friends were unavailable and the guy who loathed TFA, we knew was never gonna give it a chance. It was just me and the bestie and opening midnight. Had to marathon by myself though. We went to the screening to another packed theater, genuinely excited to see the story continue. And we came out really unsure of what to think, after my second viewing, I decided I didn't like it. But now reflecting on what it has done to this fanbase and my passion, I've come to another realization. I FUCKING HATE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!! It killed any excitement and passion I had for this franchise. And the proof of that was 2018 when I was not looking forward to Solo (which to be fair I was never on board with). Me and my best friend went midnight again and we went in unexcited, we came out bored. Resistance wasn't great, Galaxy's Edge was a disaster, Battlefront II was riddled with microtransactions. Star Wars was dead to us.
Now, this year, I have been watching and vastly enjoying the Mandalorian and Jedi: Fallen Order was a lot of fun, those were entries in the franchise made by people with a lot of love and affection for it. Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Respwan have all made me a little happier in what has been a very disappointing year (both Star Wars wise and with my personal life). As for the Rise of Skywalker, for tradition's sake, me and my best friend are gonna do the opening midnight screening for the film, tickets are already booked. We just finished watching the prequels, spin offs and originals and will be watching the sequels Wednesday night leading up ep IX. But unless Disney pulls a miracle out of their ass, this will most likely be the last time we see a midnight screening for Star Wars.

I am a STAR TREK fan so I can relate. I love many forms of Sci Fi and Fantasy but Trek really has a special place in my heart and gave me hope for the future when times were really bleak growing up. I have literally watched all the movies and franchise and still enjoy them. The feeling you have about Star Wars is a feeling of disrespect and betrayal. That all those years and money spent supporting a show, is basically told "we don't want you as fans anymore". It's a hard thing to hear, especially from people who just don't care about the countless people who have worked, supported and created their own works based on a passionate community of fans. Star Trek Discovery almost made me want to go on a killing spree. But I digress, as Q (a character from Star Trek said on the last episode of Next Generation" "All Good things must come to an End".

This summer, the Utah Symphony did 'The Empire Strikes Back' in a concert (the movie is played, and the orchestra does the soundtrack). I was crying. When Star Wars: A New Hope came out geeks and nerds were very much keeping a low profile because what is now considered 'pop' culture was then looked down upon on as fringe, at best, and juvenile. When the star destroyer kept coming and coming across the top of the screen, it was unlike anything that had been done before. The story was a window on an entire universe of possibilities. Some of the characters were recognizable tropes, but dressed in new clothes, with new abilities. Since Lucas had no way of knowing if his endeavor would be successful, the story was basically complete in the one movie. But fans. went. wild. Toys, books, comics flew off the shelves. Then a sequel was planned. Theaters would announce when ticket sales would commence and people camped out for days, then they did it again to get a good seat. A community formed. At WorldCon that year, and for years to follow, Star Wars characters predominated (closely followed by Star Trek). Empire Strikes Back was the best kind of sequel, the main character's stories deepened, new characters were introduced, and That Big Reveal was a complete shock which opened up Darth Vader's backstory. But, best of all actually, the loose ends meant there would be another movie. Then there were Ewoks, and Jar Jar, and sand getting everywhere- but the Star Wars world had taken on a life of it's own. It could be whatever I wanted it to be. Time passed. Lucas seemed to be tired of it all and there was no talk of any more films. Many fans were excited, actually, when Disney bought the property. Here was a major studio with deep pockets, access to great writers and a proven history of being protective of it's intellectual properties. If anyone could pick up where Lucas had left off and move the story forward, it was Disney. The Force Awakens was a bit of a misnomer, because the Force had never gone to sleep for it's fans. It wasn't great, but there were a lot of interesting directions being teased. Little did we know, however, that the people in charge had no plan, that the writer(s) didn't understand or care about the Star Wars universe and proceeded to run 40 years of good will through the shredder before crapping all over it, then proclaiming the stench was somehow the fault of the fans that had kept this universe viable for decades. I cried when I remembered how the Star Wars universe used to be and will never, ever, be again.

I believe a Disney insider intentionally leaked the plot so as to provide a public excuse for its inevitable failure. Why? Because they knew what a terrible movie that they had on their hands. Additionally, they have no intention of taking responsibility for the trash-fire that *they* are responsible for producing (from The Last Jedi up until today). It all comes down to deflection and projection. It's the behavior of a narcissistic-sociopath.
Just watch----they're going to come full-force at the fandom menace on UA-cam. Everyone who made videos on the leaks will be blamed for its failure at the box office.

First off man, very sorry for your loss. When you first said "...and my father was there" when talking about your earliest memory, I thought something might have happened. Then you confirmed it a few minutes later.
My dad passed early this year, in January. It changes things a bit. Gets easier with time, but never really leaves you.
Going back to the topic, I'm boycotting Episode IX pretty much for the exact same reasons you listed, and I am only a moderate fan of the franchise. Even then, it means something to me, and I hate how Disney has treated it in general. Decanonizing the EU is a big middle finger to thousands upon thousands of fans who enjoy that content. The mishandling of legacy characters is more of the same. You know how the rest goes.
We all know the movie is going to make money. I still want to see it underperform. I want to see it do worse than TLJ. I was hoping at least half the people who disliked TLJ would boycott Episode IX, but I'm seeing so many people go out and buy tickets anyway. It's disappointing, but that's how hype works.
That said, I can't be mad at you for knowingly supporting Disney's treachery here. You have suffered for like two months straight watching shitty Batwoman episodes and reviewing them for our benefit. If you want to suffer through Episode IX, more power to you.
    Ideas for the review...
You could record the audio with your phone and then jot down notes from that later, or just take quick notes in the theater. Would make doing a video or stream that much easier.
Whatever you do man I'll check it out. Good luck

I definitely sympathize with your feelings. I don't plan on seeing this movie because I don't want to give Disney money after what they did to this franchise. They really only understand profits. If they don't meet their financials goals, then they MIGHT be inspired to do better.

Wow that was wonderfully done, I commend you on being so calm and and concise with your criticism. I’m right there with you on every word and thought.
As a point of hope, thought there is no really ever going back, it may happen that in the futures someone retcons the new trilogy.
May the force be with you Thorias!

I felt so empty inside when I left the movie. It broke my heart what they did to star wars. I put away all my star wars merchandise. I will not watch or buy anything ever again.

i hate to say it, but we are the same. star wars has always been my childhood memory when it comes to movies. the scene where luke han leia and chewy aboard the millennium falcon entered a meteor to escape the enemies, unknowing that they were in the belly of a giant monster. that scene stuck to my memory til in my highschool days.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. It's worse considering the role this franchise had in helping you deal with the rough patches in life and how they've totally let you down. You're getting them back now though. You're a critic of some renown. Your opinion matters. People like me listen. So...LET EM HAVE IT.

And yet, by some sort of miracle, this freaking movie will still rake in the dough right of it's opening weekend!!! I wouldn't even dare make a bet on it!

"It''s terrible etc. etc. but I got to see it" - that is why they keep doing them, because of all of those weaklings who just need to see it and put money in their pockets...

You captured my feelings exactly. I saw return of the jedi in the theaters. I was 7. Luke was undying hope to me. Galahad. He's gone. Star wars is gone.
As far as i am concerned there are 7 star wars movies. I liked rogue 1 and ep1-6. That's it for me.

I’ve been an advocate for recasting the original characters and making a direct sequel to return of the Jedi - it surprisingly seemed like an unpopular choice with fans online, everyone wanted the old actors back, so that apparently meant they couldn’t do much with old leia and Luke so cast new actors for new characters to work alongside them. I would have liked to see Sebastian Stan as an adult Luke with a young apprentice rey that he took a shining to because she reminded him of himself and Dennis Quaid as a grumbling Solo getting into trouble with the Hut mob and mandalorians and introducing Snoke as a sith who wants to be the new emperor... oh god I’m writing my own fan fiction here. But fan fiction is what we got from JJ and Rian... JJ handing his ideas to Rian and he just tosses them over his shoulder like Luke did in The last jedi... very symbolic. Juvenile too. Star Wars is in great hands with these people ....

Unbelievable: I live in Broward County, FL, and *none* of the theaters near me are sold out on opening night. *ALL SHOWS STILL HAVE SEATS AVAILABLE*.
I remember going to see Episode 1 in theaters: my parents bought the tickets three weeks in advance, and the theater was packed to the gills. Hell, every show of Endgame was packed to the gills when I went opening weekend.

9:23: "He [Rian Johnson] only cared about one thing with Episode 8, and that's being the bull in the china shop that walks in, flips over every table, smashes everything in sight, and walks away laughing."
I'm not even a Star Wars fan, yet I know that what you have said is true, because I have seen it with my own eyes with Star Trek. Bad Robot and Secret Hideout could have made New Trek without perverting the heroes and ideals of classic Trek. However, they have made New Trek as the complete opposite of classic Trek: New Trek is immoral and pessimistic. It is so perfectly contradictory to the goal of Gene Roddenberry to make the world a better place, that the corruption must be deliberate and cruel. I feel your pain.
May the force be with you. Live long and prosper.

On your next video, please make a hearty suggestion that anyone who goes
to see Rise of Skywalker should take a photo of the audience density
(and maybe even ask the theatre guys how overall attendence was for the
movie). We really need to insure that they can't pull a "Captain Marvel"
on us by inflating the ticket numbers by buying up no-show seats.
