Jeep TJ/LJ Engine Tick OPDA FIXED!

  • In this video I replace the stock Oil Pump Drive Assembly (OPDA) that has about 85,000 miles of use on it. The 05 and 06 wrangler OPDA's were known to have an issue after Chrysler switched the design from the earlier TJ models. While the known tick for bad OPDA's is the laughing monkey sound, this tick is also signs of a bad OPDA. Even if you don't think your OPDA is bad, if you do not know whether it has been replaced and have to question if its an OEM part, its good practice to replace it because a failed OPDA can result in complete engine failure and seizing.

Be aware, broken/cracked pistons are a common problem that create similar noises. I have two 4.0's, both had this problem.

Also after changing that it will not alter oil pressure because the pump is in the block not in that unit only the tip of that unit sits in a groove in the pump and the pump and opda share a drive gear off the cam

@@grumpy-g5s It's lifter tick, most 4.0's have it. Really not a huge cause for concern, it's from improper lubrication though. The lifters get worn down against the cam. Flat tappet cam engines need zinc in the oil, new engines don't.

This sounds exactly like my 2001 Wrangler TJ. How long did it take you to do the repair yourself and did you replace the part completely? Also, if I choose to take it to a mechanic what do you think an approximate price might be for the repair? I’m hoping it’s under $400.

I changed my 03 4.0 a few days ago. It was ticking, when I placed my finger on top of the CPS, I could FEEL it ticking. Cam shaft synchronizer..... pain in the A$$. The shift bushings got wollowed out and hitting sensor on every revolution.
TDC , remove your belt, unless you have xray vision, watch several videos, this guy's 05 06 not like my 03. Think your 01 is similar to mine. Syncro will not just drop in, I struggled, brought engine to TDC several times, tore up my arm in fan doing finally went a tiny bit beyond TDC finally wiggled it in fired up and idle correctly, phew ! Cause I had really I'd it up a couple times, even threw a p0340 $$$ light, put belt back on, started again , revealing engine.... nope, it broke up and died, more codes too😂 think 0351, 0353. Pulled out and turned syncronizer 180 degrees.... perfect !! Yes, it's possible to start engine 180 out
$400 job, at a shop, maybe ? Good luck

Im pretty sure the cps connects to some rotating part of the oil pump. There are some mods that require removing that cps cap, then using a flat head screw driver to rotate the oil pump mechanism it affixes to, to prime push rods and lifters with oil rather than starting it back up dry.

Replaced OPDA and still had rocker arm noise, don't replace this just because of this video, 99.9% of the time its the rocker arms that are worn and causing this common tick on 4.0 motor, replacing the OPDA WONT FIX A WORN ROCKER ARM !!!!!! I would retitle video as just replacing OPDA and not replacing OPDA to fix tick!!

I know that there were no other issues with my Jeep as I keep it in the best shape possible. If your Jeep is a piece of junk then yeah it could be a bunch of things that cause the ticking. For me, the OPDA was bad and this solved my problem. Thanks for the input :)

What you are most likely hearing is "lifter tick" which is common on 4.0s because people don't use oil with zinc in it, the zinc provides a barrier for your lifters that ride against the cam. With a flat tappet cam set up on these old push rod motors, you want oil with zinc in it, like Shell Rotella T5 diesel oil. Modern oils don't have the zinc in them that these older style engines need for proper long term lubrication, which is why most 4.0s make a ticking sound.

Ok but take this into consideration, I have a similar tick that is not as loud on my 94 yj 2.5L. I replaced lifters, pushrods and rocker arm assemblys. The noise was 100% unaffected. I do have a new oil pump that i have not put in yet. We'll see what happens

definitely not a rod knock or bearing the motor would be shaking and the jeep would vibrate badly.

It is, the ticking sound is lifter tick, not from the OPDA. Hence why he never showed a video with the "tick" gone, because you won't remove that tick. The lifters are worn down from improper lubrication from modern oils that lack zinc in them. Almost every 4.0 I've heard has lifter tick.

      You guys are savages.
The guy went out of his way to make one video to show the TJ / Jeep community that this was "his" fix to a common knock issue. The sound is more of a knock than a tick, in my opinion.
A simple thanks for the video would be the right comments to be making.
Anyway, the 05 and 06 are the only years the TJ came out with this OPDA. I have an 05 and it's making that same knocking tap, tap, tap noise and it's extremely worrisome. I tried the Restore 6 cylinder additive and it didn't work.
      Thanks for the video bro.
