  • Built in 2018, this video takes a look back at what I learnt from the garage build. Starting with the idea and planning phase running through to the final build completion and all the ancillaries that make the perfect garage. I’ve also included the costs to help you budget accordingly.

    Viewed for the garage because I will be doing the same sort of thing soon (I hope!). Very useful info. It's great to seee how the dimensions and the cars work out. Thanks Rich!

    If I was you I would have planed for an electric car charger. Also space for solar and a battery could add value. Thank you for sharing your build and thoughts.
    I'm planning my new garage. Cost is a big thing and will be doing a lot of work myself. The target price is under £10K
    I was thinking cedar but I want to heat my garage. so will be using "Panel sell"
    Single car 6.6 X 4.2
    I will be insulating the concrete floor (target price about £1200) Using EPS foam (25psi) better and cheaper than XPS. reinforced base.
    Already have data cables, power 16mm SDA, and water 22mm.
    Lights will be 4000k color
    Going for mechanical heat recovery ventilation. (about £500 very simple to do)

    Nice video! I really like your garage and car collection. The wood really gives unique a character to the building. Warm and cosy. I would like to have the same in Belgium, unfortunately I don't have the space. Do you have plans to put tiles on the floor?

      The floor is very dusty (being concrete) but undecided what flooring to use yet. Tiles, matting or paint have all been considered 🤷‍♂️

    thanks for sharing - I am just going for a similar project, In Herefordshire the contractors are getting very greedy and way past my budget so I need to investigate options (hence why I am here) my opinion on your electrical sockets - too low, as I get older bending down that low becomes painfull. I am also a Boxster owner and need to get it indoors.

    • @FastandFun
      @FastandFun  4 місяці тому

      Im only just over the border (and I mean by a few hundred metres!) from Herefordshire into Gloucestershire. Material costs have escalated a lot since my build (although I’ve since move house/garage). It’s funny because my new place has waist high sockets which I hate. Just causes trip hazards everywhere with CTEK chargers and extension cables etc reaching down to the floor! 😂 Horses for courses I suppose. Good luck anyway and I hope you get it built 👍🏻

    Nice garage. I expect you will paint the floor at some point but if not a cheap easy way of sealing the floor to stop white powder showing on tyres or anything else on the floor you can use PVA. PVA (white liquid glue basically) can be diluted 50/50 (or any ratio of your choice bearing in mind strength) and poor over the floor then swept around with a soft broom. It gives you a solid clear dust free surface. Leave it to dry properly for a day or two depending on weather/temperature. PVA is available at any DIY store like Wickes.

    Hi mate, I was thinking of doing something like this in the future and your video was a great help, thanks.
    Just a question about planning permission and all that - I would like to have a 2 post lift and the current regulation on outbuildings is 2.5M max eaves height which would mean I'd only be able to raise my car about a meter off the ground which wouldn't be ideal. 3.5M or so would be ideal for a lift and being able to stand underneath your car!
    Did you explore getting planning permission for a 3.5M high garage or is it just too much hassle? Are the council even likely to approve something like that?
    Cheers mate.

    Interesting insight, I’m considering building a double garage, but would be doing much of the labour myself with the help of dad.
    How much would you say the cost was minus labour?
    Also, may I ask why you didn’t make the garage a meter deeper so you could have tool cabinets or bits and bobs to work on the cars built within? The outside looks amazing but inside seems rather underwhelming. In saying that, I bet it fits your needs perfectly and I’m just imposing my own thoughts, sorry 😂

    • @FastandFun
      @FastandFun  3 роки тому +1

      Difficult to say accurately because it depends on what you classify as material. Cedar cladding is very expensive, as was the high grade cement that we used. The doors were high quality too (expensive) but were installed as part of that cost too, as too was the timber lintel that traverse’s over 5m. Then there was the roof tiling which was done by a 5-6 contractors to do in a single day. Even the electric materials added up. So as a approx. estimate I’d suggest about 50% of the total build costs were materials.
      We went through many different size/dimensions but deeper the garage was further forward into the drive it would go, and I still wanted a large parking/drive area out front as much as possible. Secondly, I was clear from the outside that the garage was only for hosting the cars and nothing else, I didn’t want tools kept in there for security reasons as I have other more secure places for tools/bikes and other garage type of stuff.
      I hope that helps.

    • @djewen

    • @FastandFun
      @FastandFun  Рік тому

      @@djewen if my plot of land hadn’t been size constrained so much then yeah of course I’d have gone a metre or so deeper (or wider) but I was right at the limit so it was either a double with large workshop or a triple and I keep my tools elsewhere in a secure lockup. My rationale for building the garage was more for storage of cars than for anything else, hence the triple.
