Jason's argument is the most shocking argument I've ever heard in my life.
He works for talksport. 90% of them are pathetic, but him and Gabby might be the worst!
Not only do I 100% agree with Jamie O'Hara, I'm also staggered that Southgate is completely flipping the bird at any aspiring, in-form young England prospects by his absolutely rigidity.
Jamie makes some good points with this one.
Jason acts clueless most of the time. I think je just likes the sound of his voice. Why are we standing by Southgate for another tournament is completely baffling.

Not one of those players plays in Phillips position. Phillips won England POTY 18 months ago, he’s shown a lot more than Declan Rice when healthy. Maybe Skipp could have been given a chance but he also rarely plays (until now when all spurs midfielders are injured)

I’m genuinely confused by people pretending Maguire had a good World Cup, he was to blame for 3 of the 4 goals we conceded wasn’t he? including the goal that put us out… just because he didn’t concede 5 every game like he’d been doing for Utd doesn’t mean he was decent

People like Jason cundy are exactly why England won’t win anything. Whilst he is half right(you can’t solely pick on form alone) what you can do is pick people who have been on form for a long time I.e Toney (who should’ve been at the World Cup) dropped Harry maguire who has been terrible last season and hasn’t played this season and so many others. James ward prowse has been phenomenal for Southampton for years now but can’t get a call up (and if he did he wouldn’t get a sniff anyways).
Maguire has been excellent in 95% of England games since he got the shirt years ago and ward prowse is a poor man's henderson who takes great free kicks. Take away his free kicks and there's no way people would be creaming over him to get in the England squad

So what Cundy is saying is no matter how well you are doing at club level the manager will still pick his favourites even if they are not starting for their clubs. That is bad management because
A) It demotivates the players who are actually playing well and who feel they have done everything in their power to get a call up.
B) It makes the players who are picked complacent because they know they will be picked anyway.
100% agree with O’hara on this one. How some of these players retain their places is just unbelievable.
Just because Maguire didn't make a complete idiot of himself at the World Cup the media and Southgate say he played really well. It's an absolute joke that he and Phillips are in the squad yet Ben White and James Ward-Prowse are not.
Maguire was excellent and the fact he earnt a place in both the euros and world cup team of the tournaments backs that up. I do agree that phillips shouldn't be anywhere near the squad though.

@@DB-07 You can pick the odd holes in any player in any specific moment, a CB's mistake often leads to a goal or a goal chance, what's important is judging a players performance overall and maguire overall for England is excellent. I can just as easily counter your specific point and say Maguires performance was a big reason why Italy failed to beat us in normal time in the euros final.
Yes we should judge him against every opponent including Wales and USA just as much as we judge him against Denmark, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Croatia etc. Do you use that same judgement when he was rested for the first time in ages against Hungary where we got absolutely battered without him.
My point is you can't pick and choose when you judge a player because that's ridiculous, you can only play what's in front of you

Southgate picked Callum Wilson because of a 2 week stint over Toney to the world cup. We all thought it was because of the charges but hes just proved it wasn;'t...
When fit, Wilson has been a very good striker the last few years. Has more experience and caps than Toney - they were probably neck and neck when the time came for the call up. Nufc were also 4th at the time and he was leading the line.
He has gone offf the boil now and Toney deserves his spot

I've never liked these international breaks mid season, but when we go from ConteBall to SouthgateBall (Basically the same) it's even more painful ;( (And I wouldn't mind, the major tournament qualification system is so rigged so big teams reach the finals that it's just a borefest all round)

He’s extremely average and overhyped that’s why. Milan have conceded more goals than the team in 15th place this season but people think he’s the answer because he plays for a big European club. I’d probably prefer him to Maguire but put Dunk, Guehi or White in Serie A and they’d probably look like world beaters

Cundy's "argument" is one of the most moronic I've heard in a while. Media bias towards so-called "top 6" clubs and their players in this country is shocking, but it's also one of the main reasons why England hasn't won the WC for more than 6 decades and it's also one of the main reasons why we wont win it for another 6 decades!

First time for everything, I agree with Jamie 😅 I have been there myself, I had 2-3 year’s banging in goals for the youth team, but never got a call up for the youth international team. It hurts, because you start to believe, maybe this time I’ll get picked. So I feel sorry for the players that have played brilliantly this season and still haven’t got picked while watching Conor, Dier, Maguire, Kalvin get the call up. It’s a devastating feeling

Why does Jason keep saying we need to see form over a longer period of time. Does he not realise that tournament football is the epitome of form over a SHORTER period of time. Players only need to play well for about 6 games or so.

The idea of picking on form would breed a health competition in the league not only fighting for your club but then to play international. If you have a constantly changing squad your building experience and strength in depth. If some of the “reliable” old names are as good as the manager believed they would step up their game and cement their place if the manager was actually brave and picked on form.
Case in point for argentina mccalister, there is no way no matter how well he was playing if mccalister was English he would be in Southgates team. Yet he was brilliant for argentina at the world cup.

Teams don't just turn up and win trophies, they steadily improve and show progression then after much hard work and a little bit of luck they win. There’s no gateway into the England team for different names. And even if people like Toney do get picked, they’ll never play. His first touch was a ball over the top, it should've been a simple headed clearance, but he panicked, watching player running behind and it bounced off his head almost a pass to the attacker. Ben White-Saka partnership not being brought up at England team is the most crazy one.. both of them are literally tearing the premier league apart.. look at Saka so awkward playing with Walker yesterday.. Southgate should replace Kalvin Phillips with Maddison (he's the closest player similar to Odegaard) and try to use Saka (your best creative attacking player) play with his most favoured playing style, which is possession football.. Grealish also used to play with Pep's tactics at Man City.. Southgate have to change into possession football, build up play from the back.. Now as England fan, I almost cry everytime Pickford kick the ball long for Kane to win the aerial duel..

Everybody knows city signed Philips to fill up the English quota.😂 I've never seen a such a basic midfielder get picked consistently and praised as a top player. Worst of it Rice is his partner.😂 If england doesn't change that pairing. They won't ever dominate international football. Michael Carrick was single handedly playing both there roles for a decade in which UTD won every single trophy.

The last caller had cundy in a corner and would have most Southgate defenders in a corner. Their arguments over Southgate’s selection get picked apart so easily. Jason saying dunk and March don’t get in cos they don’t play CL football, yet maguire has barely played in the europa (taken out against Barca)… why… because he isn’t good enough. The reason Gareth was successful at the start was because he had a smaller pool of English players to pick from and he gelled players on form with experienced internationals. Now he’s got a big pool to choose from but he panics and goes safe cos he doesn’t have the stomach to drop players that have done a job for him in the past
