  • In this episode of my series “Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 5 mile circular walk from the village of Wildhern which is located about 3.5 miles North of Andover. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I parked my car at the village hall & recreation ground, located on the Western side of Wildhern and started off with a quick exploration around a 2.8 acre wood virtually opposite the recreation ground, (on the other side of the road). The woodland was donated to the Woodland Trust (with free access for the villagers) in 2002.
    Before heading out into the countryside, I had a wander along the one main lane than passes through Wildhern, admiring some beautiful houses & cottages as I did so.
    My route then took me Eastwards along a section of the Brenda Parker Way to Doles Farm, at which point I headed North along the edge of Blagden Copse.
    After leaving Blagden Copse I headed West, initially to Pill Heath, & then on to the tiny village of Tangley. There were some stunning views across the Hampshire countryside along the way.
    At Tangley, I had the opportunity of visiting the delightful Church of St Thomas of Canterbury which was followed by a short detour South through the Fox Plantation, to my next destination - The Fox Inn (at which point I took light refreshment).
    After enjoying some delicious Soup & splendid ale at the pub, I started the final leg of my walk by joining an old Roman Road (this section is called Hungerford Lane) which took me back to the outskirts of Wildhern.
    Just before entering the village, I finished my journey by a pretty pond at the side of a crossroad of two ancient routes.

    Wow, this walk looks incredible! I love the hidden gem of Tom's Wood 🌳 It seems so peaceful, and I bet Logan loved exploring there. It's fascinating that the whole wood was planted by one person! The village of Wildern itself looks so charming with all the thatched cottages 😍 Great call to stop by the Fox Inn - that food looked delicious! 😋 Thanks for sharing this lovely walk and the interesting history behind it!

    Logan looking very smart and cosy in his camo coat!! That church was stunning - the walls were so thick and the font very unusual. I loved the ending sequence by the pond with the cloud reflected - a beautiful image to end on! Thanks for sharing your walk with us.

      Thanks Jean. I nearly showed a "blooper" at the end as, literally just after I said the last few words to Logan, the sun disappeared behind some black clouds & everything went very dark!

    A lovely early Spring walk Dave. And thanks to Tom Ware for having the vision to plant out such a wonderful piece of woodland.

      Tom's Wood really is quite idyllic and peaceful - a real "gem". It is great that there is a bench in there as it is the perfect spot to just sit, relax and reflect for a while.

    Looked divine. Logan's coat blended him into the countryside quite magnificently. Another lovely walk. Logan's editing skills are quite jawdropping!

      Thank you Steve. Logan quite likes that coat as it is not too thick and just keeps the chill off. There is a lot of "stopping & starting" and "hanging around" when we are filming these walks and now that he is a "veteran" (he had his 8th birthday in January), he feels the cold much more these days!

    What a lovely walk Dave and Logan, I love when he runs 🥰 Such a beautiful and unusual Church Dave, love the font and where the alter is placed. Those houses looked lovely too, especially the thatched ones. Glad you were able to research The Fox ;-)

    Hello Dave. I know that area pretty well, living not too far away. 20 odd years ago I Iived a few miles to the north as well, so that was on my route into Andover. The Fox did English food until it changed hands around the time I left the area in 1995. It had been closed for a few years, until the present owners took it on. I haven't visited the place since!

    So sorry I missed you earlier Dave. This looks like a wonderful morning walk with the fog. Sometimes mornings like this is the most peaceful and clears the mind of the cobwebs as they say where I am from. Just beautiful Dave and Logan. Thank you so much as the forest has always been special to me. Enjoy your weekend ☀️

      So sorry to hear about your loss, Craig. They do become so much of our lives don't they. Fiver is doing well (he had his 3rd birthday last month). He is not really good enough for the show ring (although he did qualify for Crufts as a puppy) but he is coming on nicely in Dog Obedience competitions and indeed will be competing at Novice level this Summer.

    Yet another beautiful walk thank you Dave, I must say that I particularly liked the early morning mist, transported me back to a time when I lived in the UK and used to take full advantage of going country walking on similar days in Dorset.

    Nice walk Dave. Hope you wiped those muddy feet before walking up the runner in the church! Why is, or rather was, the Methodist Chapel primitive, any idea? Exmoor ales are usually very good, I've tried the bog-standard Ale, Stag, Gold and Beast (definitely not a driver's ale that one, I'd probably even avoid it if I was walking!), but not tried the Fox. I'll keep an eye out.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  4 місяці тому +1

      That Fox ale certainly went down well! Not sure about the chapel I am afraid. Fortunately my boots had dried up a bit, walking along the quiet road, so they were clean when I was in the church.

    Great video Dave and lovely area. I've been looking at that area while following Paul Whitewick's recent video regarding search for Cerdic's Barrow which is somewhere not very far away from your walk. Somewhere a few hundred yards NW of Picket Piece ? ( following the clues in his video )

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  4 місяці тому

      Thank you Geoff. Yes, I watched Paul's recent video as well. It is so frustrating that so little is really known about that particular era in time. I was wondering if he was referring to a barrow near Stoke, which indeed isn't that far away from Wildhern.

    • @geoffw8565
      @geoffw8565 4 місяці тому +1

      @@DaveFord Dave the position at the end of the video where he says the barrow is 200 or so meters away is at the very eastern end of the Ox Drove where it meets the Walworth Rd. The road junction loop !
