  • In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6.5 mile circular walk from the village of Chaldon Herring (also known as East Chaldon) which is located about 8 miles South East of Dorchester. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    After stopping off at a layby on the top of a ridge overlooking Chaldon Herring - to visit the “Five Marys” bronze age barrows - I parked my car at The Sailor's Return pub (which was to be my final destination).
    I started my walk with a wander through the village, crossing a ford, & passing the village green , to explore the delightful church of St Nicholas.
    My route took me out of the village along a bridleway heading South East, uphill towards the coast.
    At a place called Daggers Gate, I turned Westwards to follow “Old Daggers Gate Road) which runs parallel to the South West Coast path. There were stunning views to be enjoyed both to the North & indeed towards the sea to the South.
    Passing by a beacon, a memorial to the author Llewelyn Powys & some sculptures, I gradually headed North West & finally joined a bridleway (to the North) that took me to the tiny hamlet of West Chaldon.
    The final leg of my walk took me along a quiet country lane back to Chaldon Herring where I took refreshment at the pub.

    Love being on these walks with Dave and Logan. Such a lovely cheerful soul, the history details and maps of the areas are fascinating. We've been watching for a while and love the Hampshire walks (where we live). Thankyou ☺️

    Wonderful walk,, Dave. You were so lucky with the weather too, because March was pretty wet. In fact, I would have expected that ford you crossed to have much deeper. Some very pretty cottages in what remains of the village.
    Then the rolling downs and valleys with views of the sea and Portland. Those sculptures were very interesting and quite beautiful.

      Thank you Lionel. Yes, there haven't been that many opportunities for walks in "good weather" in the last couple of months or so - which has meant challenges with the schedule of weekly videos on this channel! Hopefully it will not be too long before we get a spell of sunny and dry weather!

    Wow, Dave, this looks like such a gorge walk! 🚶‍♂Loved the bit about the five Marys and the history of the village. That church is stunning! ⛪ Def going to add this to my Dorset walking list. Wish my doggo could join me on an adventure like this! 🐾 Cheers for a smashing video! 👍

    Stunning walk! Amusing to see Dave Ford fording a ford early on. I loved the derelict barn you passed on the maybe bridleway as you turned north. Burt's crisps seemed to grow on Logan after an unsure first taste! Thanks for sharing your walk with us!

      Thanks Jean. Yes, Logan's favourite crisps are Pipers but he seemed quite happy with Burts!

    10/10 Dave. My favourite Dorset village, walk and pub! Or perhaps that should be 3/3?? Not been able to walk that particular walk for a few years now, but the pub gets a visit every time I'm in the area. It really is stunning countryside and lifts one's mood every time I go there. Excellent work.

    Another great walk, Dave, and it seemed that the only people you met were on horseback. You didn't seem happy with the bag of crisps - not your favourite, or did Logan complain?

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  3 місяці тому

      Thank you Jim. Logan's favourite Crisps are "Pipers" but he didn't seem to mind that brand instead!
