- The British Forces' equipment is almost unrecognisable from a few years ago. Entire vehicle types have disappeared, many deemed unsuitable for the rigours of Afghanistan and entire fleets have been replaced. But not all are cut up for scrap. At a time when the defence budget is stretched, selling off thousands of vehicles a year is a valuable source of income.

I like the idea but this is ancient machinery 😂 and college use modern domestic market cars for students to practice on. And most people who own a MOD defender is probably working on it themselves
Yes exactly, give them to colleges or universities, to practise mechanics. Instead they are given to 3rd world countries, who later in times fight against us with our own vehicles.

Never met a guy who drove service vehicles carefully, just driven like we stole it. Most of our daily inspections on our MT vehicles were pen’d up from the crewroom tea bar without even checking.

I wish we'd keep all these vehicles in a handy stockpile somewhere. They might be obsolete, sure; but most are still fully capable pieces of hardware, and they would be make for useful reserves should we ever find ourselves in a war of attrition.

Really surprised to see them with Harley’s in the fleet.
It’s a Harley Davidson MT500. Mostly likely built in Italy factory in the 70’s when Harley bought a Italian motorcycle company.

They were great bikes (when they started!) I have fond memories of struggling to lift one back up out of the mud after givng it to much on the training area.... fun days....
These are the Armstrong/CCM built, Rotax 500 powered bikes- Harley branded because they were trying to sell them to the U.S. army. They were not a commercial success, and went out of production around 2000, if I remember correctly.
The old CET is an amazing bit of kit.

They don't give service personnel any type of reduced first in line deal . Most of the kit ends up abroad

2:10 So you have to conduct sales "ethically" in terms of export. So basically, you just sell to middlemen that btw all have those "licenses and documentations...." , those middlemen "guarantee" they are legit, and then they sell that shit to third world countries and all are happy.

As long as the main armament is deactivated in line with UK standards, a tank is nothing but an armoured, tracked, uncomfortable and expensive to run cab.
I was a Landover mechanic, they're a breakdown waiting to happen, for m'way use?make sure you have full recovery in your insurance.
None ever broke down I drove and that was for several years in the RAMC with lots of off-road abuse. I am assuming you are a civilian (or were) mechanic.

Having owned several over the years, I'd say the wiring can be a little bit flaky (although mine is so basic that it would happily run without an alternator or battery). As for the mechanicals, with a little maintenance and diving skill, they pretty much indestructible.
There's no shortage of idiots who never change their engine oil and/or spin their tyres until something explodes... and then blame the vehicle.
Imagine using it as farmer but if they been I war zone are they radioactive.flying school an instructor can use it as that and air ambulance, you could use that tank in house build road construction etc on farm.

Prior to Falklands the UK military was primarily geared for nato warfare v Russia. This was a mistake. It's looks like UK again gearing up for one type of conflict, terrorist based, which is very risky.

No longer required. Vehicles are costly and time consuming to maintain. It is difficult to justify this expenditure on vehicles that are no longer needed. Some (like the Snatch Land Rover) are no longer used, particularly with security operations in NI closing down and them no longer being regarded as fit for service in the Middle East.

@SEAN INGRAM No, hoops like dealing with the DVLA and getting it insured without a number plate to drive it to the MOT centre. What's more it was registered as a van meaning cheap road tax for a petrol V8 :D
