  • I visited Oldham Athletic Association Football Club as they've recently become the first team to have played in the Premier League AND Non League.
I got let inside Boundary Park for a quick look around and also investigated the history of this old football club.

Looking at the number of former EFL clubs in the fifth tier, I don't think it'll happen soon. That was a fascinating video, charting a club's meteoric rise and fall. Quite a contrast to Manchester City, who had hard times not too long ago. I can remember them playing in the old third division. What I most like about the channel is the variety; keep it coming mate!

As a life-long Oxford United fan I am sad to say that we beat this record by quite a number of years. The Yellows graced the old First Div, before it was renamed as the Premier League, for 3 seasons between 1985-88, winning the League Cup in 1986 by the then biggest margin of 3-0. Like the fate of Oldham we had shyster owners begining with maxwell and ending with kassam and we found ourselves in the Conference in 2006, just 20yrs after being in the 'top flight'. My very best wishes to Oldham, and all their fans, as the Conference is a tough, tough, league to get out of - it took us 4 seasons but, like many other clubs they can, with a bit of astute management and patience, do it. Good Luck, Oldham FC.

You wanted some interesting information about where and how some clubs were founded. Since I am from the Czech Republic, I will write two things that you might not have known. Sparta Prague was founded in 1893. Believe it or not, it was not founded in Prague then. Sparta was then founded in a city called Královské Vinohrady. Today this place is already part of Prague, but back then it was an independent rich city. So the club was initially called AC Královské Vinohrady. Only a year later, a meeting of the founders took place in a pub (this time in Prague), and because club did not receive financial support in Královské Vinohrady, they decided to move the club to Prague. And since ancient Greece was popular at the time, they named the club Sparta. So Sparta Prague also got its name in the pub. And now one thing that maybe you didn't know and still a lot of people don't know. Surely you know Hajduk Split, a team from Croatia. And you probably still thought it was founded in Split. But it wasn't. It was founded by a group of Croatian students who studied at the University in Prague and had just returned to their favorite Prague pub from the Sparta - Slavia match. They were so excited by the match that they decided to found a football club, which after completing their studies in Prague started playing in their hometown of Split. So yes, Croatian Hajduk Split was founded in a Prague pub in 1911.

Boundary Park seems to be one of the loveliest stadiums in England if you ask me. I love this behind-the-goal stand covered by one of these good old gable roofs which represent the romanticism of British football for me. If I will come back to visit Britain again and see the Manchester area once in my lifetime, I'll have to go to Oldham for sure.
I really have a soft spot for the clubs in the lower divisions which had their best times in the early 90s when I got intrigued into football. The team of my hometown which is currently playing in the 4th tier of Germany (a semi-professional league comparable to the National League but divided into regional groups, so it's quite complicated to get out of this division), Wuppertaler SV, was a 2. Bundesliga team at this time (they also spent three years in the Bundesliga in the 70s and even made it into the UEFA Cup as as a newly promoted team, but that was a handful of years before I was born).
Please do more videos like this featuring British non-league teams which spent their best times in the 2nd or even the first tier like Oldham. You can literally smell the history at these places, and watching these collared Umbro shirts from the 90s takes me back to these good old days. I'm thinking about clubs such as Stockport County or Southend United. Best regards from Germany, loving your channel

Oldham had a miracle escape at the end of that first PL season, staying up by winning their final three games. Sadly my team (Palace) got relegated as a result. On a more positive note, we were extremely close to getting a Palace v Oldham Cup Final in 1990. Despite what happened in 1993, I hope they can get back into the EFL soon.

Although I'm a United fan I'm absolutely shocked and saddened to find out that Oldham have fallen into the 5th tier of football. It was 32 & 28 years respectively we had those epic FA Cup Semi final battles with them but somehow it seems like it was only yesterday. Truth be told we should have lost them both and I had just about given the ghost before Mark Hughes saved the day. My driving instructor was from Oldham and we would often talk and laugh about football after the lesson . Looking at the League table, you can see how the TV money benefited the top clubs and eventually destroyed real competition.

Boundary Park is unique in that there is a big slope from the Rochdale Road end, they also had one of worst plastic pitches even by plastic pitch standards! We had two particularly poor owners :one I think is in prison, but we look forward with optimism to a fresh start under Frank Rothwell. We had sons of Jamie Carragher and Richie Wellens playing this Saturday in John Sheridans last match as manager and fortunately managed a very late winner. I feel for Oldham fans. But a far more spectacular fall from grace was experienced by Burnley who went from being champions of England in 1959/60 to almost dropping out of Division 4 in 1986/87, winning their last match. If they'd drawn, they'd have been bottom.
I have a connection with Oldham as a Lancs/Yorks hybrid, my father being from Oldham. In fact, he used to tell me how the Latics got 30,000 and the RL team 20,000 watching them. He would be 110 if he was living, so we're going back to when he was a kid, before he moved to Skipton.

They were founder members of the Premier League and the Fourth Division, but only by default. Teams that were relegated from the First Division in 1992 missed out on the Premier League. Where as Oldham gained enough points and survived for two seasons.
They gained their place in the newly formed Fourth Division because the new division was made up of the 12 lowest teams in the Third Division North and South table at the end of the 1957-58 season.
Ironically, Scunthorpe and Lindsey United finished as Champions of the last Third Division North table. They now sit bottom of the National League tables.
Oldham were relegated in 1994 and dropped into the National League in 2022 (28 years), but that is what happens when you stretch your finances beyond your budget.
Similar financial issues plagued Luton Town who played-in and dropped out of the First Division in it’s last season: 1992 (before it became the Premier League) and dropped out of the Football League in 2009. (17 years)
Of course, First Division and Premier League rewards were nothing like what they are now…
When Luton first dropped into the non-league, I am sure most of our supporters believed we would immediately bounce back… but it took us a few seasons and we learned to respect the league. The true fans are the ones that stay with their club through thick and thin and support their club no matter what league they are playing in.

April 2023. Just to say playing in the National league hasnt been too bad. With an excellent new owner Frank Rothwell we have seen a turn around. WE struggled at first but have now reached the safety of mid table with consecutive wins. Wrexham from this league will soon be rising up the EFL like Stockport. It will be tough getting out of this league but you have to be optimistic.

I'm amazed there haven't been many more teams do an "Oldham".
I'm more amazed more haven't gone bust- but they will.
Britain, population 67million, has 92 professional league clubs, and probably another dozen or so non league clubs who are all professional.
It's amazing any man between 18 and 30 does any job other than being a professional footballer.
America, population 365million, has 32 NFL teams.
You don't have to be a maths genius to see there's something not quite right.

I'm an exile Mancunian what lives in Scarborough now. I supported Manchester City of 40 years. My last City game was 3 seasons ago. First game of the season v Norwich we were reigning Champions and the atmosphere was pitful. And nearly 50 pound for the privilege. That was it for me. Sick and tired of paying ludicrous ticket prices, sat with corporates and Daytrippers who only jumped on to football after Euro 96 because it became also fashionable. Fed up with silly kick off days and times to accommodate Sky and TNT sport's. It was done with an heavy heart and maybe living in 115 Mile away made the decision easier. But it ain't the game I grew up with stood on the kippax at Maine Road in the 80s,90s even early 00s. I watch none league Scarborough now love it. So Oldham's best time to be in the premier League. Was when they was in the premier League. When it still belonged to the working classes. It's now just a circus, Corporate, none entity!!!

Oldham definitely leveraged their plastic pitch advantage. One bounce between each goal kick and scorch marks with a sliding tackle. Opposing teams needed to work out their tactics or get overrun.
