I think it could be in the diff or u joints. My dad thinks so too. Make sure you let us know what happens next.
Love the hawks and crows screaming at each other in the background.
My brother had a 77 that only made noise in hard left turn, took to 2 different shops, one spindle, bearings, n brakes n still same. Brought it to me n I found one of passenger side U joints was about to fall out, so I replaced all 6 n then found out it just started to red line at 138, still had more to give, but wasn't mine n I didn't want to fix anything else. Can't believe 2 shops missed what was so easy to find. That was in mid 80s
All the best dude
45 minute wheel bearing job, thank God for Texas winters
that clicking noise sounds like one of the 4 cv joints in the rear is failing.
you can also use a stethoscope to isolate noise locations
Sounds like a cv joint to me.
I was thinking U joint possibly as other have stated. More just hopeful thinking than anything
I'd check your UJ's but its quite a thud, you can see the cables throbbing when it clunks. Has one of the clutches in the diff given up maybe and that broken piece is rotating and catching?
The amount that cable moves I should think you'd be able to hold your fingers on 'near candidates' and home in on where the fault or cause is. Just a thought.
they're called tie rods and the part you're after is a tie rod end
stethoscope to confirm source, saves taking the wrong thing apart
Just saying .use a stethoscope hold it to the rear-end. And yes a fluid change can make a difference
If it was a diff gear tooth the sound would be ranging, not consistent due to the reduction ratio of the diff. Also a few years back, a car of mine had a cv fail and it sounded exactly the same.
Guess you checked U joints, I would think you could feel that clunk by hand turning
Im late on commenting but i would put it back in the air and chase the sound with a stethoscope probe.
Or pull the drive shaft off the yoke and turn the wheel by hand and see what you hear.
is it a u joint or carrier bearing? i know they have a torque tube style drive line so it might be problematic to check, but i've had a carrier bearing make a sound like that in the past. also look for something in a rear tire, either stuck in the tread, or puncturing the tire it's self.
Check the C.V. Joints
Could it be a stone or a nick in one of the brake rotors/drums?
There's 5 universal back there that can make that noise .
Hi! Some day I've had simillar noise to yours. Not in Vette, but I think you can check this too. In my case it was wheel bolts were too long and they get to deep in brake drum. They were colliding with brake springs. I don't know what you've got inside, but it easy to check I think. Greeting from Poland.
Have 5 checked the driveshaft universal joints?
Nick Australia
TBH I'd rather deal with clunking from the rear than clunking from the front any day of the week.
My first thought is drive shaft related.
I had it once and it was only a screw in the tire ?
Possibly a axle??
Driveshaft CV joint.
It sounds like a u- joint to me
broken ring gear tooth
Pull that diff apart, will be interested to see what’s inside.
That is kinda a big job to do before you've even isolated where the sound is coming from lmao.
@@RATsnak3 Pulling a diff apart I wouldn’t classify as a “big job” but to each their own.
@@dbk81 you’re right! But it’s a lot of work to do if there’s no reason for it.
Keep replacing stuff and You will find it to be the last thing You checked LOL!!
Pop the cover off so that we can take a peek, sir
that's a cv joint
