I actually made a set for a friend a little bit ago that was purple with neon pink swirls into it that turned out great the second time I made them. I used purple food coloring and neon pink acrylic paint. Since the resin I've been using as of lately is really think none of the colors blended into one thankfully and man, if they weren't going to my friend I would be using them now. They turned out way better then I expected. The first test I made of them I put went from the bottom to the top with my pipet and it didn't turn out great, it was just a straight line. The second test I made a circular motion while going up and thats what did it for me.
They will blend more visually rather than physically if you're using transparent pigment for the smoke, like the alcohol ink used here. An opaque pigment, like an opaque acrylic paint, will not blend visually. Acrylic paint also doesn't have the same consistency as alcohol ink, it won't spread the same at any resin thickness, so It just depends which look you're going for.
I've always had aweak spot for dice with smokey swirls in them, and these dice? They really scratch that particular itch. Love 'em! A quick question though; Do you think it is possible to do a combo of these dice and the dice with a liquid filled center? Like a smokey shell with a liquid core?
Possibly, there is like a 90% chance you'll get a huge bubble that will ruin it, due to having to wait for the honey phase. But definitely worth trying :)
Hey Rybonator, Thanks for making these videos, they're super helpful. Have you considered making a video on dice making without a pressure pot? I'm new to the hobby and struggling with air bubbles at the top of my sprue molds.
Hey there! So I actually have made some vids on that :) My 24k and glow dice don't use a pressure pot, nor do my older ones. However, I am happy to show more of that. Essentially you just want to do an opaque dice so that you won't see any bubbles in the dice.
Oh man, man, man, man, this ultra transparent hard edge dice look so incredibly beautiful. Bro, even with all the hardships and hiccups you are outdoing yourself every vid.
pouring the blue resin on top of the (mostly) solid resin gave me an idea. you should try making layered dice. like a rainbow or half and half or something where you fill part of a mould in a colour, let it set, then pour a new colour on top without removing it from the mould, then let that set, for clear distinct lines between the different layers
jesus the puns at the beginning of most of these videos make me want to cry. (they're good puns tho, also love your content. me, personally i don't make dice, but its cool to watch these videos :D)
I don't even know why youtube recommended this to me. I don't even play board games or D&D but i must say the dice are super nice! i've been loving the content itself lol
I am really glad you tried the gel paint. I am new to resin and wanted to preserve my wedding flowers. I wanted a pearly background. I did not want to spend a ton, either, since resin is already a huge investment. After many, many, many videos, I chose to try a pearl gel based paint. I have my first sample curing as we speak. (Practice round before trying with my actual bouquet flowers) You gave me great hope that it will work!
I'm so thankful for this video! Awhile back, I was playing around with different techniques and managed to cast a d10 that had a gorgeous smoke effect. Recently, I've been trying to recreate it in a full set. Between applying lessons learned through trial and error on attempts 1 & 2 and watching this video, attempt #3 is a success! Huzzah! Thanks for sharing your journey, tips & tricks with us.
If you are in/ just past that gel state, always check to see if you can get it melt a bit with the ligher or a high heat gun- it sounds counter intuitive (because heat speeds up the reaction and resin isnt "melty" like abs plastics), but sometimes it works and can at least allow you to level off or try to get a cap on- but dont overheat it- if it doesn't work or you mess up, don't keep trying because lots of actual dangerous fumes and it will bubble and burn.
My power has been out for about 2 hours due to what is supposed to be 30 inches of snow and now i get to watch this in the lowest quality, unless i want to wait an hour for it to load. Edit:power is back.....for now
Really nice to have the visual difference of your smoky dice compared to normal ones! Seems like patience realllllly is the key to making these look great
Another good way to help a smokey look is to use powdered pigments for the colored portions as the powdered pigment is heavier and it will sink over time. Also using a blunt needle syringe with a looonng needle will help as well
For sprues like I used in industrial casting class, I suggest using perfume funnels. I like the funnel shape, and the exit end has a similar diameter to some tooth picks.
I'd love to see some more tabletop/prop type things! I've loved those videos from you before and they're a cool change of pace from dice! :) (loved these sets btw)
Hi, I've started making dice and I've been using pipettes to pour my resin into the mold however I've found it takes forever for the resin to be sucked up into the pipette and forever for it to fully dispense into the mold. I was wondering if you (or anyone) had any ideas to make this a bit faster. If details help I am also using the set and glow resin however I do not give it a warm bath so maybe I should try that to thin it down??
Hey, i just wanted to say thank you for the inspiration. I made my first 3 projects yesterday, and now waiting for the resin to cure. :) i think they will turn out really cool.
Hi! I wondered if you'd get that subtle effect more easily if you used some metal needle syringes. I know some woodworking supply places have them to be able to get wood glue into tiny cracks and stuff. It would make it easier to just squirt out a tiny amount. I think that purple color looks awesome towards the top where there's less of it, so something like this might help accomplish that.
i've found using a single drop of alcohol ink works great for this effect. just drop a single drop on top after the resin is thick and just work it in with a toothpick a little bit, a small swirl, a few jabs and the result is awesome! more smoke effect and easier to control.
You should do one with a small dice floating in a giant dice so you can roll with advantage and disadvantage like a magic 8 ball probably really hard to do but i think it would be so cool. I think your videos are really cool keep up the good work.
I have a couple of questions. I've seen smoke dice done many ways, including what is essentially petri without white ink. I was wondering if you mixed fresh resin for your colors, or set aside partially cured resin for them. Do you think that it would make a difference in how the colors spread? Or does that depend more on the consistency of the clear base? Do you think it would affect how easy the resin is to work with? I've seen it done both ways, but not with enough examples for my own estimation. I'll be working with one set at a time myself. Do you think that heating the resin before hand is manageable with one set? Thanks!
Hey, a friend of mine sent me this link. Now, I've been wanting to do resin work, with wood at least.. But I also want to get into D&D. And well, I know you need dice. So where did you get all your supplies? I'd love to make my own dice.
I am new to resin casting and just got my first pressure pot. I have watched a number of your videos, and I know you have told us what pressure you set your pot too. However, I can't find a video where you tell us again. Could you please let me know?
@Rybonator do you know if you could attempt to compact the information in the audio? Thanks anyway!

have you considered getting syringes for inserting colours? and also possibly pouring? cleaning may be a hassle, but might get some even better results with them :) You're dice are coming out so pretty! I loved how the shadow bolt turned out!
Curious if you mixed all this resin at once and so the colored stuff also thickened up when you used the pipette, or if you poured clear, let it get to the honey state, then mixed your colors so it was more flowey when you piped it in?
I’m just getting into the hobby and love your videos! Have you done much with fine colored glitters, like nail glitter? I don’t want it to just sink to the bottom. Just a recommendation for a video I would love to see. As always, love the dice!

Out of curiosity, could you design a squish mold that had a reservoir for extra resin in the lid? (psuedo sprue?)
So just a question, but is it possible to do a controlled bubble effect in dice without ruining their composition? I was looking at some of those bubbles and thought that a set with like a blue base with bubbles rising to a more transparent top would be awesome for a Water Genasi. Or like a more greenish set with black accents for an Eldritch warlock who’s pact is with a water-based creature.
