Do you need to have self closing hinges in order for the damper to work properly?

Yes, there needs to be a spring in the hinge to pull it closed.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Blum Dampers. They work a whole lot better.

Are the Blum Dampners work if you don't have Blum hinges? If so, which did you purchase? I ask because of the reviews I've seen on Amazon for different versions of Blum dampners.

They won't. I have lived in multiple apartments, and had roomates in well built homes. People just lack contentiousness and consideration for others. They literally think: "How can I use the least amount of calories while conducting business in the kitchen?"
