That must be what my brother was talking about when he said total timing. The only thing that I can think of that wasn’t Done correctly was having the engine at 2500 RPM when setting at 34.
Also numbers are just a starting point.All motors are a little different. Just like a DR prescribes medicine You may have to cut back a little or bump it up a little to get the best results for you
I have an alky injected small block and have never had a timing light on it.If it cranks hard back the timing down,The motor will tell you when it is the happiest and will also help your cooling

At the beginning of this video ( first start ) it had too much initial timing. That is why it was trying to kick back ! Try David Studebaker's comment info and the key word is AT INITIAL TIMING AT IDLE ! ! ! ! !

Add a couple more degrees back in it and it will be perfect

I hear the motor is still laboring at idle . back it down a little more. now it sounds better.

Way too much timing ,It is trying to ignite the fuel before the piston is at top dead center
