@@TweedyPubs Hello. This is just a quick note to let you know of my admiration for your important work. In the parlance of past contributors. And with reference towards local radio presenters, (or Steve Wright fans). I want to say; “Hi Tweedy! Long time listener. First time caller.“ I am a man that has lived 49 summers so far. And most of my major years have been engrossed in seeking out good fare and surroundings. Watching your posts has really made my heart sing. You “GET” the whole experience and passion for pub lore. Your understanding of the importance of detail, married with an almost, nonchalant and casual delivery, is very enticing. I think you’re brilliant.

Can I first say, that has to be one of the best thumbnails I’ve seen. A very evocative image.
And somehow, despite all the redevelopment, there’s still something of the Victorian port about this area - at least around these featured pubs.
Incredible depths of research, once again. Good to get that Whitby link. Some lovely videography too. A bit of bokeh with the pint and the Gormley statue. Very nice.

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  4 місяці тому +3

Thank you Mr WC21! Yes I was pleased with the thumbnail, although I suspect "experts" in such matters would say my face should have been bigger (I mean really, who wants that?!) and there were probably a whole host of other things wrong with it...
I really like this part of London, and I similarly get a great sense of earlier times wandering these streets, and particularly all those old stairs down to the river. It's interesting that even in Dickens' day it seems to have had a nostalgic air of times past - he apparently spent quite a lot time lurking about in the area finding inspiration for Our Mutual Friend.
Yes I was pleased with that shot of the beer and the Gormley statue! I tend to mostly stick to the GoPro for exterior shots, and the phone for interior shots, but of course the GoPro is fixed focus, so sometimes it's nice to use my phone instead outdoors.

I drank the Grips as a young photographers assistant back in the early 80's and it haven't changed a bit, loved it then and love it now. We also had a very enjoyable time in the Town of Ramsgate when we were snowed in and the days shoot was cancelled the studio was at Metropolitan Wharf. The hole area looked very different then and few people would go to the area. One pub you mist was called the One that Was Mist I think and is still there. Named because it stood completely alone either by war time bombing or demolition in the 50's.
Thanks Mr Tweed for bringing back fond memory's of time well spent there.

I first went to the Prospect of Whitby about 1969, and was surprised to see a beer vending machine in the pub, opposite the bar. Never seen one anywhere since, and it would be completely illegal now.

Wow - of all the places where you might expect that kind of technological innovation I wouldn't have guessed it would be there! I think Wetherspoons experimented with vending machines for a while, but yes the legalities of them are probably a bit challenging. The only time I've ever used a beer vending machine is in Japan!

Tweedy laser focused like a bird dog once again to start the Easter weekend off on a proper trajectory. I spied a Pie and a Pint sign behind the bar at the Ramsgate...that and Harvey's Sussex Best in good form makes it an absolute winner in my book. Turner's and The Queen's Head will see me stride thru their doorways on my next visit indeed as I simply adore a neighborhood spot that is set back well away from high traffic areas. The pint in The Queen's Head will simply taste better for me knowing that The Queen Mother graced the establishment with Her presence. She will always be my favorite Royal. A very good friend of mine worked for the RF and used to personally make her gin and tonics in the evening. Great stories he has. Well done Tweedy, cheers from the Jersey shore!

Hi Tweedy Pubs from Washington DC. We are thoroughly enjoying your channel, congrats on your success there. Last year when I was in London, wife working in Westminster, while I wandered around London, I visited a surprising number of the pubs you have featured. So fun to see your comments on them. Question for you--Do you know of any self-guided audio walking tours of pubs? Something you can download and guides you walking from one to the next? We have done the Rick Steves walking tours of London in his app, and have seen a few pubs along those guided walks, but I'd like something more focused on pubs in a neighborhood. We'll be visiting again soon, so thanks for any advice.

Thanks David! I hope I didn't spoil the famous histories of these pubs too much - it's usually not my intention to debunk these pub myths, I just like to go and look in the historical records to see what evidence there is and if there's anything I can find which adds some colour to those stories... but it more often than not ends up revealing the history on those pubs signs isn't quite right!

Thank you John for a lovely selection of very atmospheric and historically important pubs. All definitely worthy of a visit and almost all with an inviting selection of hand drawn beer. You did well to visit them at what looked like a quiet time. No doubt those pubs, which back on the Thames, attract quite a tourist following at certain times of the year. Until the next one, cheers 🍺👍😀 Now, where can I find a porter in Berkshire 🤔

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  4 місяці тому +2

Thanks Andrew! It wasThursday lunchtime when I visited these pubs, I was in the area not long after 11am, thinking I'd get some exterior shots done before the pubs open, then discovered the Prospect of Whitby actually opens at 11:30. So I almost had the place to myself, which is a rare treat. I think that's probably the one of the five covered here that draws the biggest crowds although I suspect it's more a place people go for a meal rather than to stand at the bar and drink five pints after work, so it's probably never packed in that sense, like some city pubs are.
The Bell at Aldworth was always a good place for mild, I don't recall whether they'd often have a porter on, but there was always something there I really liked the look of, and it is of course a really beautiful pub!

Thank you! Yes in the past when I've been to this area I'd normally combine a couple of these Wapping/Limehouse pubs with those two over in Rotherhithe. The very first time I tried that it went a bit awry though as I hadn't checked the map properly and didn't realise there was no way of crossing the river around here! It was in that 2007 - 2010 period where the line formerly known as the East London line was closed ahead of it being merged into the Overground network. I considered walking through the Rotherhithe Tunnel which I believe was technically possible at that time but really not a good idea!

Thanks Rob! The area has a very different feel from those city pubs - it's kind of half way between the East End and a sleepy fishing village! Definitely makes for a nice day out, in my opinion, and there's the option to combine it with the pubs just over the river in Rotherhithe (the Angel and the Mayflower) which I have covered before (as well as the Prospect of Whitby featured here) in an old video, but it was made before I started this channel proper, and I think they deserve revisiting to get the proper Tweedy Pubs treatment.

Thank you! Yes it makes a lot of sense to combine this area with the Angel and Mayflower over the river.
I'm increasingly leaning towards doing most of the audio / narration back at home now as it was often hard to find a quiet corner of the pub to do the talking to camera bits. I really like hearing the background of the pub when it's the murmur of conversation or the clinking of glasses (or in this video the lapping of the water on the balcony at the back of the pub!), but when it's piped music or air conditioning units or road traffic it really isn't helping much! I'll keep tweaking the format though - maybe with a better microphone setup there's some way to get the best of both worlds.

Hi John, that really is a fantastic advert for the area. Loved the way the pubs had two frontages. Interesting to see that there were several porters on tap, is that a new thing? I just had it down as being a bottled bear.
Thinking about it this route really should have been done in a boat, in fact three men in a boat, you, Mr WC21 and Hedley. Hedley being the junior tweedest would have to be assigned rowing duties!!
Great summary and historical investigation. Well done!!
    Have a great Easter!!

Thanks David! Yes I think porter is enjoying a bit of a revival, and I'm seeing it more often on hand pumps in pubs. I'm very glad to be honest as it's something the trendy modern breweries seem to be into at the moment, but they generally always do it in a fairly traditional, inoffensive style. Whereas they normally would turn their noses up at other traditional English beer styles like bitter - or they do it "with a twist", which always means those confounded new hops (Cascade, Citra and so on) which make beer taste like grapefruit.
So sometimes I go into a pub and the porter is a life saver - the only thing on the hand pumps which isn't grapefruit flavoured. Surprisingly that was the case at Turner's Old Star, I wouldn't have guessed they would be into those trendy modern grapefruity beers there - but perhaps Wapping is actually a bit "hip" in the evenings?
Porter was of course the main London beer back in the late Georgian / early Victorian era. That would probably be an interesting subject for a video one day - a history of beer styles in London throughout the ages. All the way up to the modern nadir of creeping grapefruit dominance!
Yes I did consider getting to the area a bit earlier and trying to get some shots from one of the boats that goes from Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf. A rowing boat with Mr WC21 and Hedley would have been even more fun! Albeit perhaps a stretch of the river best left to more seasoned sailors.
I hope you have a great Easter too!

Very interesting to see the return of porter, I honestly don't think I've tried it before. It's one of those names you often see on old pub signage. I think I would give it a try on a hand pump but probably not in a bottle!!
A story of London beer styles would be a great idea and maybe breweries too. Last time in London I took some photos from Tower Bridge and focussed in on a chimney on the southside which peeked my curiosity. This turns out to be the anchor brewery famous for Courage and now flats!!. I wonder how many other historic brewery buildings still exist?
Maybe beer styles are circular and porter will start to overtake these more modern "grapefruit" beers, that then poses the question what will replace porter ...... could Watneys Red Barrel make a return under a wave of 70s nostalgia, will party 7 cans return once more to litter our streets?
Wise decision not to take on the Thames in a rowing boat I can just see you all clinging on to that statue and the oars floating off downstream.....

Queens Head is a favourite, you also have The Ship across the square. Simply the best old pubs in London. As for Turner's Old Star, "I came here for a shootout, a proper shootout, with some proper men". Obviously I dropped the profanity.

I think the Queen's Head public bar dates from the late 1920's based on similar ones that I have seen from that period.

Thanks Liam - I suppose I always think of bar counters of the inter-war era being curved and/or sloping, whereas this was a lot more angular.... but there was obviously more than one design style in existence during that period of history! I was really struggling to place it - those lamps (and to a lesser extent the glazing in the gantry) were leaning a bit art nouveau but the slightly blocky / spartan style of the lower bar counter had an air of post-war austerity to it.

I am impressed by your research, in both its detail and depth. However these are just pubs, and do enjoy your general observations- regarding both the architecture, beer choice and general ambiance. So, more shots of you actually drinking beer in said pubs… conjecture always trumps facts 😂

Thanks for the feedback - I'm still trying to hone the format! As you may have seen in earlier videos I tended to record the talking bits, with a beer in hand, in the pub, rather than later on back at home. I really liked that for the atmosphere, but it was difficult in some pubs to find a spot to do that where there wasn't too much background noise and I wouldn't be disturbing the other customers. I also had some feedback that from time to time it was a bit hard to hear what I was saying when I did it that way. It's nice to have background sound effects if it's the clinking of glasses or the gentle murmur of conversation but it's less appealing when it's inane piped music / road works / air conditioning units!
Oh and then some people left comments that they couldn't bear the sight of my face! Why wasn't I just showing the pub interiors the whole time!
Perhaps I'll try and aim for a bit of a hybrid in future videos - with a bit more talking actually in the pub (with a beer in hand) wherever that's feasible.
