Amazing video! I was looking for a how to video for Gallery Dept. Jeans and your the only one out there. I've made a couple pairs but you've definitely shared some tips to refine my skills. A good idea for a video would be maybe doing this again with a thrifted pair of Levi 501s like they use and see how similar they come out.
Thanks! If you would like more inspiration, I'm teaching a Designing with Denim class for Stitches At Home... Here's the link stitches.events/teacher/jennifer-stern/
I am wondering the same. Also, if it is a straight leg used, is altering the inside leg seam always necessary? The jeans need to remain on the more form fitting look/feel but flare needs to hang even. When doing just the outside insert, it doesn’t seem to allow the Jean to lay natural. So I am assuming that is why you added that insert on inseam as well. Yes?
I appreciate you for this I’ve looked everywhere for how to make these but on every tutorial they never do the inseam and they make the flares so wide and high also it’s only females doing this but you did this in a way that was more informative and fit best to what I was looking for so thankyou
Oh my goodness!! Your information is fantastic! I have been sewing for 51 years. I learned so much in this one little video! Thank you! Hi, I'm Jane and I'm your newest subscriber and fan!! (Where can I find the print out of the pants?)
I love your videos! The pace is perfect and no annoying music! I have thick thighs so I rub holes in the inside leg(s) of my jeans.Would this work as a fix for that or do you have something better than that? I don't like the look of patches. Thanks again for all the great videos!
Thanks so much! ...and that's a great idea to piece the leg with new denim to "get rid" of holes in the inside of the leg. You can also patch the fabric from the wrong side and stitch it using thread that matches your denim from the right side so it's barely visible. Thanks for following along with me, Happy Holidays
Thanks so much. Can’t wait to try this. Question: I am a petite and have some jeans that are too long in the straddle. ( They hang down.). Is there any way to fix this?
My Pleasure! and because you are going to be taking out the inseams to make your vintage flare jeans, you're all set to do this: ua-cam.com/video/0j4IeCDgKgg/v-deo.html Thanks for following along with me!
Great video, thank you. I do have a question: I missed the reasoning for cutting the inner seam to the crotch and taking away more denim then adding it back and adjusting the seams, etc. This seemed much more complicated than just add smaller pieces on the outer seams. What did I miss?
Thanks so much... You can do that too. It's about the overall affect you're trying to create. For me it's about the new seam detail and the mix and match of different denims. Thanks for watching
Sorry about that! But, adding flare to the legs does not affect the fit of the crotch. When you're picking out jeans to add flare to, use the pair that fits the way you like as your base pair, and those that don't fit so well to salvage denim from. Thanks for watching
Hi Reef, I don't have time to do custom work right now... my schedule is crazy!!! So sorry about that... but keep me posted if you have specific questions if you decide to tackle your project yourself!
I've been wearing bellbottoms again since 2017. I loved them as a teenager and I didn't want to wear granny pants anymore! I found them occasionally at Goodwill but not enough! NOW I find out they're BACK! I've never dressed according to whatever current fashion was. I'm an original and an old hippie lol! I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to make bellbottoms for myself and to make some extra money because I am so below the poverty level that I'm UNDERGROUND! My only problem is that I just have a cheap sewing machine that can't handle denim. I've sewn denim on occasion with MANY BROKEN NEEDLES. I can't afford a really good sewing machine 😭. I'll be praying that I get one somewhere for free or next to it. Hopefully God will bless me with one because I've seen so many things on Pinterest that I want to sew! I haven't been excited about ANYTHING for years since I lost my home and everything everything until now. Thank you for your free instructions! You rock girl! Blessings ❤️!
Thank you so much... I'm sending you blessings and good vibes too! would u say that these measurements can be used for the “flared sections” regardless of the size of the jeans/persons height? really great video though!! provided a lot of knowledge keep bringing the stellar content !
You can use these measurements... or customize them for the amount of flare you'd like to have. Generally, the taller you are, the more flare you can add without making your look shorter. If you're shorter in height, wider flare will make you appear even shorter. Thank yo for watching!
no problem video was very helpful, last question how did you connect the center back seam to the measurement you made on the bottom of the back of your jeans? or did you jus estimate and free hand the outline to connect the two ?
Hey, so when adding the inseam flare. Do you think I should cut along the inseam to taper the pant before adding the flare? They are a bit baggier and I wasn’t sure if I should taper them the way they are supposed to be normally tapered, or cutting the excess fabric then adding in flare
That's a great question! I would decide how wide you would like the finished hem to be. Then decide how much of the original hem you'd like to remove to accommodate the flare on the piece you're adding to the inseam to create the finished width you are looking for. Let me know if this makes sense, thanks Jen
@@JSternDesigns makes sense thank you. Inseam came out perfect. Only issue I’m facing now is getting that clean triangle finish on the outseam now. It’s all good for me until the very top
awwww.... I'm so sorry, I really don't have time to make them for you, but I'm happy to coach you along if you decide to give it a try (really wish I did have time). Thanks for watching
This was perfect! Thank you so much Question: I would like to use Asian inspired heavy silk for the inserts...do you think that will work regarding fabric differences?
@@JSternDesigns I just realized, I am using jeans with spandex and I bet that will affect the use of the non-stretch silk...should I abort or somehow accommodate by increasing the inseam insert by some amount. and then do I need to the cut it on the bias? Hmmm, getting difficult.
Hi - maybe I missed it, but I didn't understand why you cut the back piece all the way up to the crotch. If you're just adding to flare to the bottom of the legs, couldn't you have used a godet on both sides?
You absolutely can do it that way... and you don't have to extend the top of the godet as high as I did either... This video is an "example" of how you can add flare to your jeans... I love that there are so many choices to make when you're being creative!! Thanks for watching
That's a great question.. If you're working with skinny jeans, I would not cut any off the back leg... I would add to both of them to make flare. Sorry for the delayed response.
I'm working with ready to wear jeans... You have to take out the seams that you want to add flare to. You can add it to the inseams and/or the side seams. I try to avoid taking out the flat fell seam because it's a little more involved than taking out seams without all that extra top stitching. Sorry for the delayed response!
I'm sorry, I gifted those jeans to a friend... I think I added about 8"-10" of flare on each leg... But you can adjust the amount you add depending on how much flare you would like to end up with. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching
Yes you can, but it's tricky. Turn the leg inside out and work your way from the waist end down to where you need to topstitch.. slowly stitch your way to the hem... manage the fabric around the needle so you don't catch anything in the stitching. ...So sorry for the delayed response!
So sorry about that, these got gifted right out the door after I finished them! Next time I'll share a photo of the finished jeans...I am thinking about working on another pair.
I lapped the edges on top of each other so they overlap about 1/2" then I topstitched right next to the original topstitching on the finished side using a thread color that disappears into the denim so all you see is the original topstitching. So sorry for the delayed response!
Thank you so much for the tip of clipping the sideseam when sewing the godet. I really needed that explanation. THANK YOU
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching :)

What fitting style jeans should you for better results, straight with straight, skinny with straight?

If you’re flaring skinny jeans on the inseam would I need to cut any off the back like you did yours?

one question, i’m still confused on where’d you cut to get the piece for the inseam
I used denim from a second pair of jeans :)
Does that have to be a similar size jeans? I found some 62x30 pair of Levi’s I’m using for scrap fabric.
@@sadikithompson You can mix and match sizes... For the pair you're cutting out pieces to add to the first pair, the bigger the better!
