  • Wanting to start the new year fresh can give us the motivation to declutter what's no longer serving us. The beginning of 2023 gives us a new opportunity to reconsider and recalibrate. This goes not only for our life goals, plans, and vision, but also for the things we want to own, the stuff we want to surround ourselves with in order to navigate our path towards that vision.
Decluttering is more than a sport for minimalists. It is a holistic practice of self-awareness, mindfulness, and self-reflection that helps us become conscious of the meaning and purpose we assign to our possessions.
As we grow and evolve, that meaning can and is allowed to change. If we hold on to things, objects, thoughts, and mindsets that don't serve us anymore as we move from one phase of our lives into the next, we are accumulating identity clutter.
Identity clutter comes in the form of mental and physical clutter that used to be beneficial both for our ego identity or life narrative, and for our wellbeing. However, over time this type of clutter has stopped being beneficial. The impact of identity clutter goes beyond filling our mind and space with stuff. It might even hinder us from moving forward in life, from reaching our goals, from becoming that better version of ourselves.
It might be only when we start the process of identity decluttering and let go of that clutter that we make room for the new mindset and for the more cherished possessions we have in our space. Then we can move ahead on our personal journey of spiritual and personal growth.
In this video I share 3 steps and some questions to ask yourself in order to identify your personal identity clutter, reflect on its past and current relevance and make a conscious decision about it.

Every thing is energy. I cleared old files, photoes, books l knew l would never read. Clothes l swore would fit. Art clutter from walls. Swedish death cleaning at 64. I can breath.

I'm a magazine copy editor, and I've kept a copy of every magazine I've ever worked on. They now take up three long shelves in my attic. Some of the magazines were emotionally draining to work on, but I still can't bring myself to pitch them. I've been trying to make time to scan the covers and mastheads so that I can get them out of my life, but I just can't motivate myself.

I hear you, it can be especially challenging to let go of identity clutter that we associate with a lot of hard work. Decluttering such things can feel as if we devalued our own creations and the time and effort that went into creating them. However, we don't. Here's a shift in perspective: By decluttering what doesn't serve us anymore, we value what does. We value our time and space now, the stage of life we are in now. Good luck!

In my 59 years, when I follow my wordless gut instincts, things usually turn out much better than when I try to "make myself" do something others are suggesting. I am saying that it sounds like you want to save them. You can redecide at any time. If you keep them, you still have the choice!

Really good advice! I have a lot of items that represent my past bad experiences or people I did not love or even like. Out of duty I have kept many family heirlooms in storage. They never served ME. Im going to let them go. Thank you!

1:08 mental identity clutter is related to outdated thought patterns and mindset that don't serve us anymore.
it can hinder us from moving forwards, because it keeps part of our identity configuration situated in the past.
3:33 physical identity clutter comes in the form of objects and things that we associate meaning and memories with.
they serve us well at the certain point in the past. However,we might keep these things beyond their mental expiration date.
    solution:
6:53 step 1: identifying the identify clutter in the first place. Ask yourself some questions, which old mindset am I still clinging to that do not serve me anymore?
7:15 step 2:evaluate the mental and physical identity clutter that you've identified.
7:47 step 3: make a decision about your identity clutter, you want to keep it or toss it?

It's weird: I have no problem letting go/selling off antiques, jewelry, clothes, shoes, etc, but when it comes to my books & DVDs it's like pulling teeth. I hear that's how some new bookstores get started...😅

New subscriber here! I watched this video three times over the past week, as identity clutter is exactly what I'm dealing with at this point in my life. Clarity is my word for 2023, and it's something you touched on at the end of the video, very succinctly. After several hours decluttering yesterday with the idea of moving forward to a new chapter of my life, and an updated identity, I was able to declutter even more (it's been an ongoing process for me) to the point where I feel really good about what I'm 'packing' (both literally and figuratively) for the next part of my journey.

A little spooky that this came up, as I just now pulled out a tote of old letters/photos and it's proven difficult to let go of things. So far I've kept about 20 and pitched 4.

Yearbooks! I feel guilty considering throwing them away but I haven’t even wanted to look at them in decades. I imagine that in the future I might want to review them with my kids but they take up so much space. 😣
