Welcome back to Model Railroading 101! In this episode, we'll take a look at some easy and inexpensive techniques you can use to apply basic weathering to your rolling stock.
Most models come out of the box looking fresh and clean. When was the last time you saw a real piece of railroad equipment that looked like that without even any rust? Follow along as John weathers and tunes up a very inexpensive N Scale model boxcar using acrylic paint washes, weathering powders, and colored pencils. It doesn't matter if you model in N Scale, HO Scale, O Scale, G Scale, or really any scale; these approaches can be used in all of them.
You don't have to be an expert to get started with weathering. You just have to be willing to experiment, preferably on inexpensive models you picked up a long time ago, or at a train show bargain bin. You could even just practice on scrap plastic, for that matter!

Mechanical improvements (I.e. weight, trucks, couplers, etc.) are a very good place to start, as it adds to the enjoyment with very little effort. Weathering a good running model is much satisfying in my opinion...
I love your approach!
Nice job! Yes it is very rewarding to fix an old model to make it valuable to the eye and with better performance.
Very good John, using a ink eraser on lettering make the faded, using a down strokes makes the lettering look as it it is washing out too. You give us all great ideas I thought I'd share one too.👍👍👍👍😃
That's a great idea!
Great lesson...don’t own an airbrush...not in the market for one...you showed great results using a simple techniques....thanks....Anthony
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you John for taking the time in showing your technics on weathering models
Molto interessante il sistema per invecchiare i carri come tecnica e molto pratica e veloce con un ottimo risultato
Always interesting to see how others weather their equipment - a lot of interesting techniques worth trying in this video. I treat the trucks much differently: a quick coat of automotive adhesion promoter (helps paint stick to delrin components) followed by ghost gray primer (Testors U.S, Navy aircraft color) followed by a pastel brown and then a subtle application of powders (a palette of dark brown, black, gray, yellow, white and sometimes orange) to bring out the details and create road grime. By the way, this Great Northern car was originally introduced by Life Like in the early '90s. The same car (and same GN road number) later appeared under the Industrial Rail label, but the original low profile metal wheels (chemically blackened) gave way to the less expensive plastic variety.
Thank you for this video. I learned a lot. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for helping us rookies
Great video! I agree with you John, the hardest part of any project is getting started. I have a couple of “test” cars that I try painting or weathering ideas on. I find having those cars allows me to relax and usually I do a better job then I thought I would.
Very informative. For beginners and for the more experienced. I used colored pencils especially to streak painted lettering. Thank you for your efforts.
Excellent
Great video john!!!! I've been waiting for some more rock music to kick start my morning!
Nice video tutorial. Nice work. Yes it is fun to use old wagons and make them appropriate to go on our layout. People gave me old train stuff, and I keep the wagon I like and change the couplers, make the weight ok, and that's it, a new wagon! Next I will use your example to weather them and make look more real.
Cool, thanks!
I just got back into N scale this year. Had a small set up when I was younger. But I've build some lazer cut structures and weathered them. To me weathering is addictively fun. Great video. Thanks.
You made a $2 car look like a $20 car. Impressive. I need to weather more stuff.
Man thank you John. This is one of the best weathering videos I have seen. Being a N Scaler too made me appreciate it more. O a a big thanks for the weight scale. That just makes things easier, Chris
Glad to help - thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Thanks. Very educational!
Very good video John. Thanks for a great series, I watched all that applied to me. I use NCE and will use a form out car cards to operate my layout when it reaches that state later this year. Room construction is almost done. Now I gotta go to the freeway and start collecting cans to buy lumber 🙂 and I am looking at the boxes of "factory fresh" rolling stock and locomotives I have. I will pick a few cheap ones and try these techniques out.
ty john, can you do a episode on casting rocks in plater someday, i spilled my plaster this week omg what a mess i had cardboard down tho lol
Excellent video. Very helpful. Gives me confidence to start weathering
This is excellent!
Great work John. With your weathering and replacing the stirrups and brake wheel with finer parts, would hide the origin of car.
Interesting. Good show.
Glad you enjoyed it!
One thing I've noticed about freight cars is the outside rims of the wheels are shiny. When I thought about it, I think that this is caused by the retarders pressing against the wheels on a hump yard.
The again
Very nice... but there's nothing wrong with cars looking like out of the box.
Absolutely brilliant John how you got the colours to get the desired weathered effect . I m so glad I’ve subscribed to your channel 👍
📽🚂 😀👍
Really enjoyed watching & learning from this video. Very interested in starting out in model railroading with N Gauge. You made it very easy to understand and liked the suggestion of getting cheap cars to practice as well.👍🏻👊🏻 Stay Safe & God Bless!!
Weathering is one of my favorite modeling subjects. It can be hard to get started on your new 300 dollar engine though. Also is that the gum container for the micro brushes?
That's the one!
I'd like to try weathering a tank car. There's 6-8 sitting on a siding not far from my place. Some are black, some are gray on top and black on the bottom from the bleaching effects of the sun and some are rusty on top and black on the bottom. None of the cars are the same as the one next to it.
That's on my list! I have some N Scale tank cars I think I can improve...
Whats a good cheap beginner airbrush??
2 nuts plus the glue would have been spot on
Something I'd like to try, but at the same time don't really have the patience to do...
You could always try doing one just to see if you like it! I put it off for a long time, but having finally dipped my toes in this pool, I can tell you I find it pretty relaxing and enjoyable!
What's the ratio of the diluted windex to water?
I did not measure but I can tell you I used a lot more windex than water.
Weight after adding hot glue to the 3 nuts is more than 1.25 now which is overweight
The weight after gluing it all down was negligible, as in less than .1 of an ounce difference. Of course, if you're worried about that, you could put it all together on the scale after you glue down the weight just to double check but it seems like a waste of time to me. I have found that slightly overweight cars work better than underweight ones anyway!
Why is this playlist running in reverse again?
Please don’t mention your ez weight app again. I bought that app and actually used it. Then, I had to restore my phone. When I went to reinstall it, it was no longer available on the App Store even though I had paid for it. I don’t like paying for something and then having it taken away. So, don’t mention it again. Okay?
Yeah sorry about that. Apple charges more than it made so when I discontinued my account for it, they took it down. If it would make you feel better, I can photocopy my paper calculator and mail it to you!
@@tsgmultimedia I figured that was the case, which is why I didn’t say anything and don’t really hold it against you. Still, it does kind of annoy me every time I hear the story since it reminds me.
I couldn't get 2 minutes into the video without getting 4 commercials. If I wanted to watch commercials, I'd watch broadcast TV.
Thumbs down!!!
Try VIMEO.
