  • Expert coach Steve Walker, founder of Ahoy-Boats ahoy-boats.com & of Sculling Academy, scullingacademy.com/ gives 10 minute introduction to different types of rowing & sculling boats. Steve has over 50 years rowing and sculling experience and explains in simple terms why boats are different shapes and the benefits of one type over another. So whether you are a private individual or a school or club, a racer or a casual rower you will find this information helpful if you are considering buying a new or used rowing / sculling boat / skiff. Some of these boats are available from ahoy-boats.biz and some are no longer available because this video was made a long time ago.

    Great overview Stephen. I was looking for an explanation of the differences between the normal racing hull I learned on and an "open water" style hull and this video provided exactly the information I needed. I didn't even realize there were so many options in the spectrum. Thank you very much for putting this together and sharing.

    Hi Stephen,
    it´s quite interesting this video as back in the 90´s when i start on a rowing club (Lisbon - Portugal) i don´t recall having this "school boats". Back then the coach just through me into a racing boat and i had to start from there. We did have the yole but 4 pax and 8 pax.
    Thank you for the uploading as i have been out of rowing from several years and i plan to come back soon ( with the family) so this has given me a new light.

      Coaches have to use the equipment they have been given. I have taught young men to scull in fine boats and if you have a good coach this can be done. But requires good teaching, see scullingacademy.com. But in the process of teaching you have to eliminate as many factors as possible to make it easy and the issue of balancing a boat is one of those elements that makes learning difficult. Some people will never even get into a boat if they perceive that it is unstable.

    The standard span from the centre of one pin to the other is 160cm. In
    racing boats this is adjustable and in some recreational boats too. The
    smaller you are the tighter you would expect the span to be set but this
    would toughen the gearing unless you also reduce the overall length of the
    oars (sculls) and reduce the inboard length in proportion to the outboard
    length. This is a whole can of worms that you can open up!

    Great video! Beautiful boats. I'm interested in buying one to work-out and to go fishing while I'm at it and possibly bring a friend along. I like all those 4 you've just demonstrated. If only I had the money to buy all 4! Ha! I wonder if I can add a small engine to the 2 seater boat on the far left. I'm sure that would need a battery and would increase the drag.

      I have the ideal boat for you, the Nordic Explorer, ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/ a double scull from which you can fish. The designer, Charlie Broughton, is a fisherman and designed the boat with this in mind. He has some great advice that I can pass onto you if you contact me via the web site. And you can fit an outboard motor to it if you invest in the transom protection option when you buy.

      Sorry for delay in reply. I don't use social media for quick responses. I use email. I don't like to comment on boats that I don't represent. I would hate it if one of my competitors were to slate a boat that I sell. So unprofessional. One thing to consider that may or may not be relevant is where you are going to keep the boat and will it fit. This is why the Yole and the Nordic Explorer, which are both doubles that may be used as singles, are only about 4.8m long so that they will fit in the average garage. It's not all about the boat's performance on the water, unless you are racing of course Susan. I am still racing at 68. Why not? In fact I just rowed the entire length of Loch Ness in a Nordic Explorer ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/loch-ness-row-all/

    where do I get the white boat?

    @richardernsberger5692 7 років тому

    So what is the third boat from the left--the white boat between the narrow racing boat and the Turbo Skiff? And what type of rowing is it most suited for? And same question for the Turbo Skiff? tks.

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  7 років тому

      The white boat with the stabilisers is a TS515 Training Scull www.ahoy-boats.biz and it is the best boat for teaching sculling. It provides a moderate balance challenge with the added security from the stabilisers. And because of its length and slimness if goes fast so that you get the thrill that I experience every stroke from my racing boat when you get it tight and take a good stroke. It provides great encouragement to beginners. The Turboskiff is suitable for use on the sea in sheltered situations because it has more freeboard.

    when buying a sculling boat, should I consider my height? how to choose it?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  8 років тому

      +liliana basileWhen buying a boat it is more important to consider your weight than your height. The boat should have the appropriate shape and volume to support your weight and to get the most speed out of the hull for a crew of that weight. So always check how many molds your boat builder has. If on one then that is no good. Your height, or lack of it, can be catered for by adjusting the rigging.

      It was made in China by Flying Eagle. It was designed by the great German naval architect, Klaus Filter. His designs are manufactured by lots of different boat builders. I currently scull in the successor to that red boat, a Wintech, also designed by Klaus, and it is even better.

    Hello, I'm interested in a slide seat rowing boat. I already tried rowing my canoe and enjoyed it but would like to take the next step. I also would like a boat that can handle rough water, like a bay. Here is my problem. Of the few companies I've found that sell a boat like I would like the prices are shocking. Any advice on where I might look? I'm in the USA.

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  3 місяці тому

      Have you looked at the Nordic Explorer? ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/explorer/ I just had a customer send me a message saying that the Nordic Explorer was "Perfect - the best bar none". We export them all over the world. As for prices, this is the difference between rowing and canoeing. Canoes do not have to be built to take the stresses that a sculling boat has to take. Canoes are basically just a shell with a seat inside. Rowing and sculling boats are pieces of ultra-lightweight engineering that float.

    For me the whole point of a boat is that you can travel on water but you stay DRY. If you're going to be getting wet then you might as well just swim and then you don't need ANY boat! It seems like people are wanting to go as fast as possible and are thus trying to get off the water as quickly as possible. I would prefer a slow, wide boat that allows me to be on the water for a long time while being dry, comfortable and stable. Can relax and go fishing or whatever...

    I am a rower and I personally thought that the comment about which boat to learn in was inaccurate at least if your planning to race at least because the floats can cause people to form bad habits in terms of set relying on those floats to set the boat for them also they're are also many different types of boats to fit a different amount of people such as singles, doubles, pairs, fours, quads, and eights he also failed to mention the rowing type he only mention sculling which admittedly is the best for minimal crews because sweeping or having only one very large oar requires at least two people neither did he mention boat sizing in the video he only did a cursory look on the different type of boats and I disagree with the statement you can't learn to skull in a racing shell I myself learned to skull in a racing shell and many of my teammates and friends have learned to skull in a racing shell he spent most of the video gushing about the yole which I agree with most of his points about the yole it's a good boat to have fun in. but one of the only pieces of critical information he said was material choice and boat type which great something actually good to consider but he left out something that's arguably more important than that which again is boat sizing
    why am I ranting on a decade old video oof
    but seriously him saying you can't learn in a racing shell annoyed the hell out of me it felt like he was saying you had to get another really expensive boat before you got into racing the skiff is really good at sight seeing on rivers but is completely outclassed by the actual racing shell if your looking to train or learn

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  3 роки тому

      Hi no_name, Thanks for mentioning all these valid points. I have taught people to scull in fine boats. So I know it is possible. The stabilisers on the TS515 can lure you into a dependency on them so I agree that you should dispense with them as soon as you feel able. However, they do help reduce fear for first timers and fear inhibits learning. The Yole was an incredibly successful design much appreciated by people who were not aiming to race and especially those with open water only to row on. Bear in mind that 10 years ago, early in my UA-cam life, I was only allowed to make videos with a maximum length of 10 minutes. But if you want a later treatise on my choice of racing boat have a look at ua-cam.com/video/xcF-LiEANYM/v-deo.html in which I have won at Henley Masters and the World Masters regattas.

      @@StephenWalkerAhoy-Boatsthank you for replying I don't really care about a decade old video and I greatly respect someone who took the time to create a buyer's guide for such a niche market a lot of that comment was annoyed ranting but my only real criticism is not including boat sizing other than that I do agree with your points a trial by fire way of learning is not comfortable for most people and I do understand that aspect of it and all the other criticism was just angry nit-picking again I have a huge amount of respect for people introducing people into this sport and there's no rational reason for me to get so heated on a decade old video made with the intention of helping people

Not what we want to encourage.
