That was actually pretty well played. The only piece of unfortunate hindsight is you decided to lift instead of resting at almost half health with a fight and an elite coming
23:06, deal 4 damage 5 times, with permanent 2+strength you turned down a 6x5 (30) damage 2 energy card that synergizes with envenom for 30 damage and 10 poison
Throwing away Riddle with Holes + when he had envenom and a poison synergy was the final straw that brought on his demise. Please learn from this my dude.
My dude, plus he had 2 strength at the start of each combat, + Jaxxed, Riddle with holes was 40 damage, with Envenom+Sneko it woulda applied 8 poison. It was such a wasted chance!
Don't fight level 3 elites, that's the problem, unless you are really confident that you can live without taking damage at all, level 3 elites are exponentially harder than level 2 and level 1's. You already have a very good set of relics and any more wouldn't help you in fighting toward the final boss.
Nah, for the Silent lv 1 & 2 elites are actually more dangerous than level 3. The head usually dies to normal strikes, since you can spam 10-15 spells per turn which applies a 100-150% dmg buff on him. On level 2 the tripple slaver fight or on level 1 the Gremlin can be way more detrimental to your build. The exception is obviously the Nemesis, because his design is just dumb. Either have a deck that can reliably put out +30 block or can one-shot him T1.
Gaining strength was so insanely nonsensical. Either heal or upgrade a card (Neutralize for the extra turn of weakness, well laid plans for an extra card to retain, envenom to make it cost 1...)
Yeah, it was an entirely offensive poison build which worked very well in the early game, but as the enemies start doing 30 and 40 damage attacks and have a ton of health themselves they’re much tougher to match up with. I predicted he’d lose to an enemy like this last vid but nevertheless he played pretty well and built a solid deck. Just offensive poison builds like that are tough to sustain late game. No matter what the enemies will always hit harder than you and have much more health than you. You gotta be able to prolong the battle to survive.
NL, the Riddle With Holes synergizes well with 'each time you deal damage apply poison', and 'each time you apply poison, deal 1 more', so hitting 4 times for 5 is really 20 dmg plus 8 poison, if my math's right
the new design on the reaper is way better than the previous one. used to be he had 25 hp and permanent intangible but you could just cast caltrops and block till he killed himself. anyways, i like the challenge of the new reaper. without the fire statuses, he'd be super easy as 40 block really isnt that difficult to come by
Nah he's not that bad. He's tough for some decks, but if you can do burst damage on his non intangible turns he's pretty easy. Catalyist+ and corpse explosion put him down
Good try NL, I think your main problem that causes you to lose a lot of runs is that you value attack cards a lot more then defensive ones. 8 cards out of 30 were Defensive ones when you lost, and 3 of those were the base Defend card. So even though your Deck archetype was a sort of poison aggro deck, you didn't have a lot of defensive cards to help you stall for Poison buildup on larger enemies. If you had Catalyst you might have been able to get away with not having much stall, but I think you might want to consider more Defense options in the future, or upgrading your Debuff cards more often so that you can get away with using blocking less. Aside from that good run and I'm loving the Slay the Spire series. :P
a very good build with this pg is full defence, footstep, a couple of adrenaline and 4 or 5 noxious fumes, basically the incremental poison every turn is insane and you basically take no damage thanks to the high blocks in the deck
You're never going to get 4-5 Noxious Fumes consistently. You shouldn't get 4-5 in the first place. You only need 1 to win if you can put up enough blocks. Realistically you want somewhere like 2 Noxious Fumes to keep it ramping at a decent place and then one or two copies of Catalyst for extra burst near the end.
This is the reason I actively avoid fighting elites on the third stage. Nemesis is such a hard counter to most deck types (you were especially screwed because of velvet choker this time, but the unceasing top seems like a great relic for the fight if you've got a shiv or anger deck). I'd say go heavy on the elites on first and second stages if you want the relics, but don't bother on the third stage unless you know you can beat Nemesis. I had a strength build with Ironclad that was crushing all the encounters. I was at full health, but I still got completely thrashed by this guy. Honestly I don't think there was much you could have done. You've been playing really well recently, so keep up the good work!
If NL had footwork+, he wouldn't have died to that last attack. If you think about the efficiency, most cards block 6, so even one footwork is a 33% increase in card strength. Considering the Silent has access to a lot of weakness, you can very easily get to the point where you block all damage with one or two block cards once you get a couple footworks off.
and if he would have rested he would have been fine.. and if he had footwork instead of another card maybe he wouldnt be in the same position to even have a chance of surviving.. maybe he misses damage when he needs to have it.. there are so many what ifs.. in most boss fights footwork is useful if you can pop it off a few times.. but you also lose out on a lot of agro by using it.. its more of a build up type of thing. the longer you go using it the better it gets but at the same time as you are building up with it you are losing out on a lot of damage opportunity...
You actually gain damage because you don't have to defend as much later. I think the only fight I wouldn't want it on is against the awakened one because the strength gain directly negates it. I guess if I could also kill the entire fight in one turn I wouldn't want it, but that isn't usually the case.
One thing I just learned is that you shouldn't discard Dazed because they are Ethereal which means they Exhaust if left in your hand at the end of the turn.
I think the issue was the lack of defense. It worked fine going full aggro against enemies you could kill in a turn or two, but for elites and bosses with hundreds of HP, you need something to weather the big hits. Even if intangible guy hadn't got you, the boss probably would have. You seem to usually skip it but all my best silent runs have involved at least 1 footwork card, sometimes 2 or 3.
Having half of your 50 hp after the Giant Head fight, using a deck with little block, is actually pretty good. The only real suggestion I can make is that taking the path, after the elite, that led to fighting another elite isn't always what it's "cracked" up to be. You went for 2 elites with a 1/3 chance of going against an opponent that negates your poison build for 2 out of 3 turns.
I mean it was his fault. The deck was way too bloated, not focused on anything enough, and he didnt take enough defensive cards. He also didnt heal before the guaranteed elite fight, he gained strenght instead which is an incredibly dumb play.
Slendyproject But you still gotta admit that an enemy that gains practical invulnerability for two turns out of each three, as well as dealing 50+ damage during his invulnerability is anything but balanced.
AlekVen's stupidface I play in the beta with the experimental balance changes, but in my experience floor 3 elites can easily break your game if you have a bad deck and or make risky/dumb choices. I think its fine since the game expects you to have an around 20 card deck and that you make sure to have enogh health if you go for elites. Nl thought that he is unstoppable with his alrightish deck but elites can really hand your ass to you on floor 3, so he really shouldnt choose a single strenght over healing or he shouldnt take on elites boldly. Imo its balanced but unforgiving of mistakes.
Footwork is one of the most valuable cards in the game for the silent, you should always take it especially since as a power after you play it you thin your deck and make all blocking cards better. Trust me, it's on par with noxious fumes. You see egg if you had footwork you would have done much better against the phantom
When your are for a posin synergy, limiting the cards you can play to 6 seems to be a very bad idea. Also you should have focused on your Envenom synergy. So bascially everything that doesn't improve this synergy is to be skipped - even if it is a "good" card.
He doesn't. Choker IS a really good relic. Just like how Catalyst is a really good card, it just needs the right deck. Using Catalyst in Shiv deck for example, would lead to Catalyst underperforming. But that doesn't change the fact that Catalyst is still broken. Choker is god tier, you just don't want to use it for decks that consistently play more than 6 cards a turn.
Choker is great if you have the right deck. It’s pretty detrimental to any 1 cost or 0 cost card deck. Sadly it was the only energy gain NL got so it was worth it for him.
Well done, NL! You managed to have fewer misplays this time and I'm so happy I had to scream at my TV less. My house hold thanks you. I understand that it must be difficult taking the criticism of hundreds of ppl into consideration, but I'm always thankful to see you play well and not rush haphazardly thru a run for whatever reason. I see those off camera plays are helping.
It isn't a super obvious play so I see why you could miss it, but you can block and then attack a thorny boy, that way your armor would have blocked the the thorns damage and you would still get the 6 armor at the end of your turn
Only mistake I saw that whole run was taking the 0 energy 4 block card, which wound up being a dead card every time you drew it because of orichalcum Also the cards you bought at the last shop were a tiny mistake - getting rid of a brick block would have been better. It doesnt matter how many cards are in your deck, the number of card draws are your limiting factor so getting rid of brick cards should be top priority.
Where did I go wrong? I lost the run. Somewhere along in the misplays. I could have gone up, with you tonight. Had I known. HOW TO PLAY THE GODDAMN GAME PROPERLY.
Floor 3 Elites are usually not worth the trouble. Avoid them as much as you can, IMO, unless you absolutely need relics--or you're overpowered. Also, Footwork is almost always worth putting in your deck.
"I don't need block" "I wanna get rid of all my block cards" "I'm gonna spend all my money to get rid of one of my shields" 20 minutes later "I lost all my HP. I honestly don't know where I went wrong!" And that, Mr Egg, is part of the problem. :D
After having the time of my fucking life playing a near-perfect 16 card Ironclad Block deck I hope NL eventually gets to making those Isaac-tier broken as hell mega synergies. Shit's actually amazing practically taking zero damage on the third level and pretty much manhandling the Shapes whom I consider the toughest of the three with the Timekeeper a close second if he hard counters you. Probably one of the best runs I'll be having in a while. Maybe I'll try my hand at a viable Exhaust or perfecting the Silent's Shiv archetype next. Hot damn this game is amazing. It also made me realize that Block has a cap on 999.
yeah that ONE strength really helped on that last fight even though you would have won if you only had a little more health. IF ONLY THERE WAS ANY WAY TO GET SOME MORE HEALTH BEFORE THAT FIGHT!
Running a poison deck, wants to get rid of blocks. Literally all you "need" to run a great poison deck is noxious and block + card draw for more block. Made a joke out of the Time Eater by throwing out poison and then just backflipping all day long. Hell poison + block deck is how I got my untouchable achievement done against the Time Eater on the Silent even. Then again I don't think he even reads Blur when he sees it go by. Blur + Backflip + Burst and you can just block forever. Granted footwork is also an absurdly broken card currently.
NL seriously needs to learn how Slow works on the Giant Head. So much wasted damage. Also, discarding Dazed is OK if you can play your entire hand, but if you don't have enough energy to play everything, it's usually best to keep Dazed in your hand and discard another card instead. Dazed auto-exhausts on its own if you hold it in your hand at the end of your turn (not sure how that works with Retaining cards, though, so take this with a grain of salt).
Every single foor 3 elite can ruin a run if you have a bad deck against them. You either shouldnt face elites there at all or make sure to have a really good focused non bloated deck and always heal before fighting them. Nl had a shitty deck and went in with loe hp when he had the opportunity to heal. This was absolitely his fault.
That the opposite of crazy, that is just boring bloat, if you want to see bloat just watch any new player that feels they have to take all the loot. The fun part of the game is the combos which you get by being picky.
I hate that last enemy. Unless you have a full defensive build, it might be harder than the final bosses... It is better to dodge all the elite fights on floor 3 for that reason.
That was actually pretty well played. The only piece of unfortunate hindsight is you decided to lift instead of resting at almost half health with a fight and an elite coming
Toast ghost i would have risked that too - his deck was pretty good.
His deck being that good is why he didn't need to risk it for 1 Strength though Justin.
23:06, deal 4 damage 5 times, with permanent 2+strength you turned down a 6x5 (30) damage 2 energy card that synergizes with envenom for 30 damage and 10 poison
brandon hughes THIS!
Se
He did. Several times.
29:19 _"I just don't really know where I want wrong there."_
You went for a poison build but had no reliable way of blocking attacks.
Throwing away Riddle with Holes + when he had envenom and a poison synergy was the final straw that brought on his demise. Please learn from this my dude.
He doesn't even know he did it.
He passed it up twice.
He would've been able to kill Nemesis with two Riddle with Holes +, Nemesis had left 11 hp, that's exactly the amount both cards would do plus Poison
My dude, plus he had 2 strength at the start of each combat, + Jaxxed, Riddle with holes was 40 damage, with Envenom+Sneko it woulda applied 8 poison. It was such a wasted chance!
Or you know resting at a camp site and not beong greedy by working out.
Don't fight level 3 elites, that's the problem, unless you are really confident that you can live without taking damage at all, level 3 elites are exponentially harder than level 2 and level 1's. You already have a very good set of relics and any more wouldn't help you in fighting toward the final boss.

Gaining strength was so insanely nonsensical. Either heal or upgrade a card (Neutralize for the extra turn of weakness, well laid plans for an extra card to retain, envenom to make it cost 1...)
Not enough block for a poison run but still good run

Yep. Poison build demands most block than all others, and enough weak to keep one guy weakened forever
i think we got this guy's number
~ northernlion, 2018
NL, the Riddle With Holes synergizes well with 'each time you deal damage apply poison', and 'each time you apply poison, deal 1 more', so hitting 4 times for 5 is really 20 dmg plus 8 poison, if my math's right
TankorSmash plus the color less card that every time you debuff an enemy they take 3 damage. Ooh man i two shotted every elite enemy with that combo
also synergizes super well with strength buffs, I had a run with shuriken + shivs deck + riddle with holes, did 15x5 on the final boss
played well eggman, buying the pear woulda saved you just so you know
TBH the Reaper definitely should get nerfed. Maybe make Intangible last only one turn, but I guess give him a bit more health?
I swear he used to be different then got buffed. I think a while back he used to always take 1 damage but had only like 40 hp.
the new design on the reaper is way better than the previous one. used to be he had 25 hp and permanent intangible but you could just cast caltrops and block till he killed himself.
anyways, i like the challenge of the new reaper. without the fire statuses, he'd be super easy as 40 block really isnt that difficult to come by
Nah he's not that bad. He's tough for some decks, but if you can do burst damage on his non intangible turns he's pretty easy. Catalyist+ and corpse explosion put him down
Robert Poole And also i noticed, he is the last elite on lvl3( closest one to boss) so you can chose a different path and not fight him
nah, he's fine as a defense capability check on ppl's decks
Got me again NL, always craving for the new episode from your series.
Good try NL, I think your main problem that causes you to lose a lot of runs is that you value attack cards a lot more then defensive ones. 8 cards out of 30 were Defensive ones when you lost, and 3 of those were the base Defend card. U went wrong when you gained one strength instead of resting
My favorite build is all block and noxious fumes then just out survive the enemies.
*insert comment about misplays*
Very clever and well thought out comment you got there! I'll have to save that one to repost on the next episode...
Sam Tillinghast acquiesced
doubt it
How about quoting him? "A 20 damage potion isn't that useful!" *Proceeds to die by 15 hp enemy*
You might be meming, but you gotta admit they happen often enough still to make ya scream
a very good build with this pg is full defence, footstep, a couple of adrenaline and 4 or 5 noxious fumes, basically the incremental poison every turn is insane and you basically take no damage thanks to the high blocks in the deck
jeah.. 5 noxious fumes, sure. What magical fairy land are you playing in to get 5 noxious fumes and a couple of adrenalins in a run? :D
In the shop instead of buying relics you find always
Obviously you can't enable in every run, but similar combos are very good for the silencer
poision + block is basically 100% win
you got incredibly lucky that's a deck you'll probably never get again you can't expect anyone to get such a deck
Nl, watching you pass up 2 Riddle With Holes+s was painful.
Epsilon Rose it would have been SO GOOD with envenom I wanted to cry
Not just that but Envenom + Snecko Skull, it would have added like 10 poison per use.
Also that girya strength
Do not ever pass up on footwork. It will always help. I like when you said "I rarely ever use defends". Cannot win without defense.
Let's Go! New episode of Misplay the Spire.
Slaw King Never heard that one before.
"Resist the temptation to thicken your deck"
Takes a card immediately
Our boi NL is learning slowly. 5 minutes in and I haven't spotted any serious missplays. He's doing it !
This is the reason I actively avoid fighting elites on the third stage. Nemesis is such a hard counter to most deck types (you were especially screwed because of velvet choker this time, but the unceasing top seems like a great relic for the fight if you've got a shiv or anger deck). More Slay the Spire 👀
Thanks NL :)
This guy mad disrespects footwork.
tbh footwork is mediocre in most cases

Considering the Silent has access to a lot of weakness, you can very easily get to the point where you block all damage with one or two block cards once you get a couple footworks off.
He deserves what he got.

"Resist the temptation to thicken the deck." thickens the deck.
Your tragic defeats touched my masochistic heart and made me by this game.
One thing I just learned is that you shouldn't discard Dazed because they are Ethereal which means they Exhaust if left in your hand at the end of the turn.
huh the comments this episode seem to have misplays of their own.
A general tip is that you don't want to take velvet choker on the silent because the silent is all about low cost cards and cycling.
Having half of your 50 hp after the Giant Head fight, using a deck with little block, is actually pretty good. The only real suggestion I can make is that taking the path, after the elite, that led to fighting another elite isn't always what it's "cracked" up to be. You went for 2 elites with a 1/3 chance of going against an opponent that negates your poison build for 2 out of 3 turns.
getting strength in campfires using a poison build, gotta love the egg
Footwork is pretty good.
Yo, NL that wasn’t your fault. That enemy is a real mean futha mucka.
I mean it was his fault. The deck was way too bloated, not focused on anything enough, and he didnt take enough defensive cards. He also didnt heal before the guaranteed elite fight, he gained strenght instead which is an incredibly dumb play.
darren trivedi do you perhapse listen good techno
Yeah Nemesis is pretty BS, and he's the reason I generally avoid elites on the third floor if I can do so.
I really like this series! My favorite thing every evening at the moment :)
“We’re going through the city here.” DAE going through the beyond eggboi
Footwork is one of the most valuable cards in the game for the silent, you should always take it especially since as a power after you play it you thin your deck and make all blocking cards better. Trust me, it's on par with noxious fumes. You see egg if you had footwork you would have done much better against the phantom
When your are for a posin synergy, limiting the cards you can play to 6 seems to be a very bad idea. Also you should have focused on your Envenom synergy. So bascially everything that doesn't improve this synergy is to be skipped - even if it is a "good" card.
Another hit to get me through the day
"I actually don't know what went wrong there."
"I think I'll skip the rest and instead take +1 strength."
Less attacks, more poison and more defends for this kind of build
A very good run this time. Hope we get to see a snecko eye run soon.
The ole' Velvet Choker + Panache combo.
"A 20 damage potion is not that valuable " the last final boss he was fighting had 20 HP left
I personally think NL over values velvet choker is it just me that thinks that?
If the negative effect doesn't come into play it's very good
I definitely feel as if he does. It's a good relic by the looks of it, but I don't think it fit the way he was wanting to play.
I think it's really good on The Ironclad if you don't have a combo build but not so effective otherwise.
Choker is great if you have the right deck. It’s pretty detrimental to any 1 cost or 0 cost card deck.
Sadly it was the only energy gain NL got so it was worth it for him.
Please take dexterity, always. It hurts the soul seeing it passed by, you can win the game on those alone.
Eggy: Gonna keep my deck small!
**makes excuses to keep every card on the planet**
Why does NL hate defends
(edit: I meant defensive cards)
''An egg is always protected by its shell'' - Ancient hindu proverb
Because they are worse than the passive block from Orichalcum
he got 6 Block from a relic every turn without block, defends only give you 5 block.
Wow I can’t believe NL didn’t make a single misplay this episode
26:13 You could still have attacked with Bite and although do 1 damage, heal for 2!
The thing that triggers me the most is NL picking bad cards for his deck. but overall youve gotten good NL, love the series!
Gotta say, slay the spire looks pretty fun. At first I thought it was just another card game, but this ones pretty strategic and unique to me somehow.
No shame in losing to the Nemesis, love ya egg
You shouldn't discard Dazed (or other ethereal curses) because then it stays in your deck instead of exhausting.
I have to be honest, I'd watch your videos more but I'm too busy playing it, now that you got me into it by the third video. :D
Has he won a run yet? Haven't seen the earlier vids.
I managed to win with Ironclad relatively easily after a few hours.
He has won one run, it was as ironclad.
*doesn't rest before going to elite path*
"I reeeally don't know where we went wrong here"
It isn't a super obvious play so I see why you could miss it, but you can block and then attack a thorny boy, that way your armor would have blocked the the thorns damage and you would still get the 6 armor at the end of your turn
Just in general I don't find going for elites on the final floor worth it.
Maybe if you have black star, but even that is really iffy.
Only mistake I saw that whole run was taking the 0 energy 4 block card, which wound up being a dead card every time you drew it because of orichalcum
Also the cards you bought at the last shop were a tiny mistake - getting rid of a brick block would have been better. It doesnt matter how many cards are in your deck, the number of card draws are your limiting factor so getting rid of brick cards should be top priority.
how can u skip prepared or prepared+? O_o
( 6 cards a round might be the reason but still...)
Where did I go wrong?
I lost the run.
Somewhere along in the misplays.
I could have gone up, with you tonight.
Had I known.
HOW TO PLAY THE GODDAMN GAME PROPERLY.
Premature loss length LETS GO
"I actually dont know where i went wrong though" probably with the 32 card deck
Floor 3 Elites are usually not worth the trouble. Avoid them as much as you can, IMO, unless you absolutely need relics--or you're overpowered.
Also, Footwork is almost always worth putting in your deck.
"I don't need block"
"I wanna get rid of all my block cards"
"I'm gonna spend all my money to get rid of one of my shields"
20 minutes later
"I lost all my HP. I honestly don't know where I went wrong!"
And that, Mr Egg, is part of the problem.
I can see why that last guy got nerfed. 2 turns of intangible seems OP.
Good run. Good effort.
NL my dude, prepared is high value. You can discard negative cards and trash. Free card draw.
Tbh, I think he overvalues prepare.
I bought this game after watching your Let's Plays and I've already won 8 times in 3 days. Just saying. This game isn't difficult.
Hell yeah, thats what I wanna see.
Wouldn't envenom have helped with the last guy?
Guess he should've kept that 20 damage potion!
nemesis ends another run!
that uhh rest you passed up, coulda saved your life
Dude that elite enemy with intangible is ridiculous wtf
U had it! But the greed gotya
Potion master! Give me your strongest potions!
Intangible messed you up, you'll get that enemy down next time!
He's starting to believe...
went wrong at wasting 30 energy which could have been used with spinning top. Those few HP points you lost as a result would have saved you, egg.
That reaper elite looks like a run ruiner
yeah it's pretty much the game's way of dicking you over if you neglect defense, as ya boi did.
You should do a run where you never get rid of cards and see how crazy it gets
That the opposite of crazy, that is just boring bloat, if you want to see bloat just watch any new player that feels they have to take all the loot. The fun part of the game is the combos which you get by being picky.
Still underestimating After Image I see.
NL might actually be improving, there is still hope Bois
I hate that last enemy. Unless you have a full defensive build, it might be harder than the final bosses... It is better to dodge all the elite fights on floor 3 for that reason.
YOU WENT WRONG WHEN YOU LIFTED AND DIDNT REST
Cool build. Those cloak and daggers tho, did jack shit.
"no point in playing block" yeah instead you'll take 5 more damage for literally no reason
That wasn't your bad NL, if your first hand hadn't screwed you with RNG, you actually could have did that extra damage just in time to lethal him.
You should not have discarded the last defend card. That is where you went wrong
Holy shit that boss is maybe the hardest ine next ti the time eater
Are u gonna play wizard of legend northenlion it’s like binding of issac but with different types of magic
Just saying, envenom+riddle with holes
