If you discard the dazed card (aka ethereal) it won't disappear it will just go to your discard pile and cause you to redraw it. You have to leave it in your hand for it to be removed from your deck for that fight.
I also love that he gets to the end of the first floor and concludes "Feed is too late" every time. I'm not claiming it's the best ever, but when there's not something better or I'm in exhaust deck, I take it and end up with 110+ life by the end of the game with only 2 floors to work with. That's a pretty sizable percentage increase, plus it equates to little bits of healing as well.
@@crossbreedpriscilla8966 He was probably talking about the bit where he complimented her hair, after questioning whether or not he had already done so.
17:20 [on sword boomerang] _"sometimes you're going to get 9 damage for 1 energy. That's ok... that's a strike plus."_ Are you being serious? He still hasn't thought about how low damage numerous attacks work with strength builds? That's the whole point of them. With 5 strength, for example, sword boomerage would do 24 damage.
Follow the heart of the cards NL! You passed up 2 iron waves, barricade, and juggernaut. You also had art of war for extra energy when you don’t attack and flame barrier. You could have had a great barricade deck that damages enemies as you build up defenses
Hey NL, if you discard your ethereal curses and then end turn with cards left in hand, it would've been better just to leave the ethereals in hand because they exhaust
also, imo, poison is one of the best synergies for the silent. Most of the cards are solid on their own, there are a few good poison synergy relics, and there's a card that doubles poison which is insane on bosses and elites. Also synergy with skills. Conversely, discard synergy hardly rewards you and the cards just aren't very good on their own. Shiv synergy might be pretty solid but I haven't really tried it.
19:20 Uh... did he just call Enflame "slowplay?" He's off his rocker. It's a 1 energy power. Literally nothing slow about +2(3) str. Even more so when you're basing your deck mostly around cleave (of all things).
At 0:25 he also says 'Tools of the Trade is slow but beautiful' (in the first turn - not that it would matter much). I gave up trying to understand him and his actions.
Hey NL, love the series. When you're picking upgrades think of how often you'll use the card in a fight. Neutralize costs 0 so it'll get used 100% of the time when it shows up, so in aggregate during a fight it's a strong upgrade. Cards that exhaust only give you the bonus once. 2+ energy skills and attacks (Bash, Bouncing flask, etc) get skipped over more often in most decks. Most of my wins with The Silent have been around high dex (Footwork) and poison (Noxious Fumes+)
Whirlwind + Necronomicon is just disgusting because the book copies the full number of strikes from it, presumably double tap does as well but never tried that because I don't like that card. Was fun starting against a boss with offering, seeing red, two flexes, and then whirlwind for 9 hits x2 thanks to necronomicon.
He learned a lesson, it just isn't the one everyone else learned. An example from the NL reddit: "Cat walks across the stove when it's on and gets burned. "NL says, 'See, I hope you learned your lesson, don't walk anymore.'"
NL, why on earth would you take cards in the hopes of finding the cards to enable it? In Isaac would you take Soy Milk just because you think you'll get Libra later on? How does that kind of strategy ever work in roguelikes?
It does sting when it happens, though. Yesterday I skipped the "skills cost 0 and exhaust" + "block 9 exhaust a card in your hand" cards and the immediate chest after that shop, I get the goddamn branch.
You shouldn't discard ethereal cards unless you have to. They'll just kill your draw again. They'll exhaust if you keep em in your hand and you won't need to deal with that one again.
I mean, he didn't have a choice in a lot of those situations. It was either discard those, or discard actual useful plays and end with x/3 again. It's not like he had other cards. Hey NL, don't keep shivs in hand at end of turn without thinking about it. Dropping it into your deck and drawing it next time around is usually pretty bad. Think of every shiv you don't play as replacing a cloak and dagger or other card that can provide upside AND a shiv in a future hand.
@Northernlion, please stop ditching sword boomerang all the time. You keep forgetting: Iron clad uses STRENGTH. Strength adds damage to each attack, NOT each card. Can someone please tell NL that Prepared isn't "free" it still takes a draw away from you. It's not that great of a card unless you are discarding something with a benefit
It’s a zero cost card that takes up a draw but gives him a draw and discard whenever he needs it so it’s better than free. He said multiple times he was trying to build a discard deck and looking for those benefit cards, they just didn’t show up.
Daremachina it’s actually not better than free. It’s like getting a quarter or paying me to get a random coin. If it benefits you to pay me then thats good for you, but if you have no reason to pay me then you probably just gave me a quarter for a penny.
No, Abe is right. Allow me to explain using a deck of playing cards (with Prepared included). Turn one, you're drawing 2-6 of spades (five cards) without prepared. That's your entire deck. Second turn you REALLY need the 4 of spades. This time you draw 2, 3, Prepared, 5, 6. Rather than getting the card you wanted WITHOUT Prepared, now you have to play it. Additionally, you play it and draw 4 of spades, but now you have to discard the 3 as well, making your hand now: 2, 4, 5, 6, or four cards. Clearly, you are better off without the Prepared. It's a n00btrap, for exactly this reason. The only reason to take it is if it's already upgraded and you're pretty heavily into Discard synergies already. This has been gone over rather thoroughly all over the place. I don't know why so many people advocate for this very situational card. This includes NL who's passed on Acrobatics only to take Prepared in the next fight. That's just bad play.
@@Daremachina Prepared is literally -1 card in the end. Think about it, if you don't have Prepared, you would just simply draw the card that Prepared would draw, without having to discard. So, using un-upgraded Prepared just leaves you with 1 less card than you started with, without getting to even see a card that you wouldn't otherwise have seen (which happens when you have upgraded Prepared btw).
At 6th player turn, just at 10:39, you've drew cloak and dagger(in fact twice) and had a strike+ that deals 6 damage with weakened, you could've lowered his shield with a 3 damage shiv from cloak and D'gers and killed him, just for you to know :p Hope you see this as a constructive comment, and as always, intercontinental high five o/
He simply has already internalized that Twin Strikes is one energy, and since he never actually thinks or looks at anything, like he always says, "it played itself."
Hey NL, if you ever get to chance to get Ice Cream on an Ironclad build with Whirlwind (and optimally, strength) it's absolutely broken; I hit the final boss for 56 (damage) x 21 (Energy) for 1176 against the final boss in one card.
The basics of deck building revolves around the real-time board state rather than your damage potential. Block cards are high value as are cards that cause weakness or negative strength. Piercing Wail is a top tier card for example because giving negative strength counters multiple hit attacks (so a boss which is hitting for 6x5 damage will deal 0 damage instead). Otherwise it still removes 6 damage from the board for each attacking enemy. If you fill your deck with attacks like pommel strike you won't have a way to neutralise the board-state and your health will fizzle out. It all depends on RNG but given the opportunity I would suggest going for a block/ defence focused deck first.
Pongze Lor The same can be said for any type of deck. The key is to get a functional Body Slam and preferably a double tap ontop but it does rely on rng. Imo debuff cards and armor gain cards have the weakest counters so they are the most reliable way to win. There are a surprising amount of ways to up your damage with a more defensive deck.
Another. possibly unprecedented, reason NL may not be going towards defensive decks is because they usually take more time to play or feel like they take longer to play. The game is already pretty long as is. I've recently had about 3 losses in a row where I went defensive builds and it ended up fine until I just ended up holding on to strands for way too long. On the other hand I only had those 3 losses because I had an amazing Barricade Entrench deck with the Ironclad where I basically hit for around 100+ damage each turn with body slam.
Why do people say that? It's meant to enable cycling. If you wanna set up a combo, this card can help you. If you get the wrong cards on the wrong turn, this card can help you. it doesn't 'do nothing', it's a setup card. That's why it has no energy cost - it already costs drawpower. Of course, you really benefit from it if you get the right relics going, but it does do stuff.
Umbaupause, allow me to explain (again).... I'll illustrate the point using a deck of playing cards. This includes NL who's passed on Acrobatics only to take Prepared in the next fight. That's just bad play.
I legitimately do not understand how or why people have trouble understanding this. Worth mentioning (again)... if you have any idea what you're doing when constructing a deck, you don't _need_ to cycle to your good cards, they're the only ones you took and they're already upgraded.
15:30 or so was priceless. Loses 4 life when he had a block that would have allowed him to take only 3 damage, draws into second block, blocks all damage and says "See, it's already paid for itself". I'm not sure he knows the meaning of that phrase...
You're not taking into account the extra energy allowing him to strike an extra time, which could have shortened the fight by a turn depending on draws. Also, he said "essentially almost paid for itself". Note how he said almost. Lose 4 health to save 3 and get in extra damage.
Won my first run (playing ironclad) while watching this video. I bought this game because of this series and it's the most fun I've had in a game in a long time.
Be prepared for how easy it is, versus how difficult NL made it look. Also, you should opt into the Beta. It's nothing but upsides (generally speaking, it's just next week's weekly patch, this week).
Black Star over Sozu and Ectoplasm? Bold move, considering that Sozu/Ectoplasm provide benefit once per turn, while Black Star only once per elite. But then, he skipped Whirlwind.
17:05 - takes a bunch of unnecessary damage and burns a potion that he didn't need to. "Proof of concept that things are going okay." Never change, Egg.
I think ive learned something after getting my first win, dont choose cards that only work with certain builds, choose ones that have a variety of build uses, then whatever build you have established, use shops to remove dead cards if you have any. P.s. my first win was an exhaust build, it is insanely powerful
After you've played enough runs, you'll be able to spot the build the game is giving you after a few card picks. It's honestly telegraphed at this point, and I wish a lot of the card selection options were more randomized.
13:30 "I think my play was good..." hahahaha these past 2 videos have had the most misplays in the series!! Wow he really does not know what he's doing in this game. Git gud boi!!!
You're exaggerating, but they've been the worst in a couple dozen episodes, certainly. Go back and rewatch like, I dunno... 5-12. He's misplaying literally every turn and decision. Now it's only some turns and most decisions.
Edit: for anyone wondering: frozen eye lets you see the order you draw your cards in your draw but not in your discard pile, ice cream let's you get the energy, not used on your turn, on your next turn Edit 2: nl thinks feed is late upon getting it after the first boss? does he think its only worth it when it's given by neow? he has frozen eye yet he hardly even checks his draw pile to actually use this amazing relic you can plan every turn via drawing or not drawing even if you dont want to wait and plan you could at the very least look and see if battle trancing is worth there's a reason why it's almost as expensive as ice cream; wait a minute... ice cream+frozen eye...
Hotkeys (which are now highlighted, displayed and much easier to find) are: A (draw pile) S (discard Pile) D (deck) M (map) Now, if you play with your hand on WASD, you should be able to do it without even moving the mouse. = )
Glad to see the egg improving! He is still taking bad cards quite often (Armaments and perfect strike for instance). Also places too much importance on offense over defense, want a balance of the two can only really go aggro if you have rage and low cost attacks (but that’s often tough to pull off). One final gripe is that end of floor one is not too late to take feed, there are 32 more nodes before you reach the end plenty of time to gain value. Especially when you consider the cost of max hp relics 100+ gold for just +7 hp (the same as using feed effectively twice)
You need card draw to make Concentrate work. So, you need something like Acrobatics, at bare minimum. Ideally, you have some discard synergy as well, such as Tactician+ and Reflex+--that's when Concentrate starts to shine.
My oh my egg. Stop trying to force archetypes into existence it makes your deck super weak. Should have learned this when you were using the silent when your strongest ability was the ability to shuffle cards faster instead of actually doing any damage
Hey let's play a discard deck, even if I don't have any discard synergie. WTF Egg... 4 prepared cards in the deck and only card draw, but no good cards to draw.
NL, playing those "useless" shivs would've cycled Pen Nib... not that this run was going anywhere... but it's the idea. If you don't learn from runs like these you create them again and again.
So NL, you slowed your roll on the fights and now you are playing better and have learned from it. Now you only need to slow your pace at deck building, meaning when you are picking cards after combat and in shops, so you get better too in that front. Do not go for archetypes or what you think as a good card but think about what you already have, on what you like and on how you think that may go well with your deck or not. You do it a bit but way too fast. Picking like 30 times the same card because it fits the archetype is not a good strategy, neither is taking cards that you like but that make no sense for what you got especially when you ignore other cards only because you are less familiar with them or you do not stop to consider how they would benefit you. Similar for relics, they are good but in shops it may be way more interesting a card that synergies with your relics or cards or removing something from your deck rather than a relic that doesn't add much to your build even if it is good. And a personal thought, transforming a card is better in the early game than removing a card since it may transform to something useful. If it transforms to something that you don't need or like you will always be able to remove it later. But if you are transforming a basic strike or a basic defend it is difficult that it turns out to be something less valuable since these are the less valuable cards in your start deck. Finally, it may be just me, but I think that defending does not equal to a bad turn, a bad turn is one that you are receiving a ton of damage and you only have attacks or the oposite, the enemy is not attacking and you have zero damage output, but defending when needed is actually quite good and you seem to not value defense enough at all.
21:28 Yeah Art of War is not that good except it really helped you in that boss battle when you used Flame Barrier and Defend few times and is really great in defensive deck? Come on Egg your rating of cards and relics is dumber than damage that you are taking.
The old “skipping the free twin strike” move. A classic.

Another. possibly unprecedented, reason NL may not be going towards defensive decks is because they usually take more time to play or feel like they take longer to play.
NL prepared is not as good as you think you say you can just dump what you drew but that does mean prepared is a card that does nothing.
Nuno Suasso Does worse than nothing it takes up a draw ;-;
I legitimately do not understand how or why people have trouble understanding this.
Worth mentioning (again)... if you have any idea what you're doing when constructing a deck, you don't _need_ to cycle to your good cards, they're the only ones you took and they're already upgraded.
Thanks for the company. :)
Doesn't use the 0 energy Twin Strike because...?
He is scared of Sharp Hide. Honestly I didnt know that it attacks you only once and not twice after twin strike.
Oh and if you mean the 21:48 moment its simple- Ryan has no brain, just fried egg.
TheShut1 Ye that's the moment I meant XD probably should've specified
15:30 or so was priceless. Loses 4 life when he had a block that would have allowed him to take only 3 damage, draws into second block, blocks all damage and says "See, it's already paid for itself". I'm not sure he knows the meaning of that phrase...
You're not taking into account the extra energy allowing him to strike an extra time, which could have shortened the fight by a turn depending on draws. Also, he said "essentially almost paid for itself". Note how he said almost. Lose 4 health to save 3 and get in extra damage.
Forget slay the spire the cuteness between you and Kate is worth price of admission
Northernlion watch out the thumbnail is 42 when it should be 43
Won my first run (playing ironclad) while watching this video. I bought this game because of this series and it's the most fun I've had in a game in a long time.
Be prepared for how easy it is, versus how difficult NL made it look.
Also, you should opt into the Beta. It's nothing but upsides (generally speaking, it's just next week's weekly patch, this week).
Wild Strike is 100% the right choice for a fast paced deck I love it. Id say its an A card
gets the cards necessary for block strats. Ignores 90% of them (he took flame barrier)
"art of war is bad" says NL because he never played a defensive deck
he's also never properly used bodyslam even in decks where he had blockade and nearly 30 block at any given turn
PrincessRazz when he didn't take the deal 5 block 5 cards I was so sad... Just that and impervious and a bodyslam+ is soooo good
Defending is embarrassing.
One day the Spire will FORCE him into a defensive Body Slam+ deck, and he'll finally figure it out.
He has a relic that lets him use statuses but never uses it
Black Star over Sozu and Ectoplasm? Bold move, considering that Sozu/Ectoplasm provide benefit once per turn, while Black Star only once per elite. But then, he skipped Whirlwind.
yup
11:13 Guess what NL, Juzu Bracelet which you dislike so much would save you there :P
Thumbnail says 42 instead of 43, egg
NL are you alright? I see thumbnail saying it's episode 42, but the title is episode 43, upload episode 45 if you're okay.
nice
21:50 y tho
because *"You'd like to kill them both on the same turn if possible"* lionNice
17:05 - takes a bunch of unnecessary damage and burns a potion that he didn't need to. "Proof of concept that things are going okay." Never change, Egg.
To be fair he didn't take that much unnecessary damage on that fight. It's safest just to accept some damage from that guy.
I think ive learned something after getting my first win, dont choose cards that only work with certain builds, choose ones that have a variety of build uses, then whatever build you have established, use shops to remove dead cards if you have any.
P.s. my first win was an exhaust build, it is insanely powerful
Going for specific builds is easier because you know you'll get certain cards on each level.
I won with an Exhaust-Clash build. Exhaust everything else with Barricade and Feel No Pain, and then attack with Body Slam and Clash.
After you've played enough runs, you'll be able to spot the build the game is giving you after a few card picks.
It's honestly telegraphed at this point, and I wish a lot of the card selection options were more randomized.
Thanks for the company
Hey what's with the japanese Kanji for "top ten list" doing on your youtube profile picture on the left?
Nl misplays the thumbnail
13:30 "I think my play was good..." hahahaha these past 2 videos have had the most misplays in the series!! Wow he really does not know what he's doing in this game. Git gud boi!!!
You're exaggerating, but they've been the worst in a couple dozen episodes, certainly.
Go back and rewatch like, I dunno... 5-12. He's misplaying literally every turn and decision. Now it's only some turns and most decisions.
he completely forgot about medical kit didn't he
that thumbnail really threw me for a loop
K8lo Ren?
oh looks its episode 42 again
Thanks for the company.
I won't trash talk the egg anymore I watched wanderbot just cheat his way to an invincible deck. Misplays and greedy drafting is way more honorabru
What episode? I haven't seen that yet.
cheaters have no balls
But isn't not being an idiot and winning legitimately even more honorabru?
Edit: for anyone wondering: frozen eye lets you see the order you draw your cards in your draw but not in your discard pile, ice cream let's you get the energy, not used on your turn, on your next turn
Edit 2: nl thinks feed is late upon getting it after the first boss? does he think its only worth it when it's given by neow?
he has frozen eye yet he hardly even checks his draw pile to actually use this amazing relic
you can plan every turn via drawing or not drawing
even if you dont want to wait and plan you could at the very least look and see if battle trancing is worth
there's a reason why it's almost as expensive as ice cream; wait a minute... ice cream+frozen eye...
The only reason I dont like frozen eye is because i keep on having to look into my deck for it.
Hotkeys (which are now highlighted, displayed and much easier to find) are:
A (draw pile)
S (discard Pile)
D (deck)
M (map)
Now, if you play with your hand on WASD, you should be able to do it without even moving the mouse.
Miles I think he means it's more difficult to trigger on Act 2, which is true, especially with how thicc he makes his deck.
Please read what infernal blade does.
I'm not sure what you're complaining about. He's using Infernl Blade correctly.
I mean, Griffin has a point, it's just about everything else on the screen that happens afterwards that's the problem.
Thumbnail has wrong number. Gotcha.
I genuinely don't understand why he doesn't use Concentrate when it's the last card in his hand.
Am I missing something?
Am I an idiot?
Toast ghost the energy doesn't carry over to the next turn unless you have the Icecream relic
+BronzeDionysus THANK GOD
I was sat there puzzling it out wondering what the hell I was missing
concentrate is basically a dead card unless you have icecream or spinning top
You need card draw to make Concentrate work. So, you need something like Acrobatics, at bare minimum. Ideally, you have some discard synergy as well, such as Tactician+ and Reflex+--that's when Concentrate starts to shine.
Episode 42?
Hey NL, the thumbnail is the same one for the previous episode!
My oh my egg. Stop trying to force archetypes into existence it makes your deck super weak. Should have learned this when you were using the silent when your strongest ability was the ability to shuffle cards faster instead of actually doing any damage
My god when he started playing as the iron clad he made such better decisions.
Hey let's play a discard deck, even if I don't have any discard synergie.
WTF Egg... 4 prepared cards in the deck and only card draw, but no good cards to draw.
It hurts so much because of how big of a n00btrap prepared is, and 30+ hours later he's still falling for it.
Don't forget about your potions.
I honestly cannot imagine Kate looking like Kylo Ren
Pongze Lor KateLo Ren?
21:40
Didn't see it initially or through the first rewatch. Nice 0 energy twin strike catch.
The Minez Thanks!
It just happened in mine and scrolled down to find my misplay brother
DrDaveDavington Yeah i scrolled down on the moment i saw it too and didnt see any comments on it so i acquiesced
The mugger(s) battle usually indicate how powerful your deck is.
Kill 0 = bad, Kill half/1= average, Kill all = good
NL, my dude, today was not your day.
I die inside every time I hear "herrrroooooo"
Finally, it may be just me, but I think that defending does not equal to a bad turn, a bad turn is one that you are receiving a ton of damage and you only have attacks or the oposite, the enemy is not attacking and you have zero damage output, but defending when needed is actually quite good and you seem to not value defense enough at all.
is it not possible to burst your storm of steel?
Well, it 'works', but the 2nd Storm replaces shivs with, well, shivs...
If he passes on a free Concentrate one more time Imma lose my shit.
21:28 Yeah Art of War is not that good except it really helped you in that boss battle when you used Flame Barrier and Defend few times and is really great in defensive deck? Come on Egg your rating of cards and relics is dumber than damage that you are taking.
yeah in a defensive deck art of war is almost as good as a boss relic with +1 energy per turn, totally carried my run yesterday
How does he survive...?
How about a Crowd Control deck? All, "All Enemy" cards.
Feed at the end of the first floor is still too late.
OKAAAAAAAAY
I was confused for a second because the thumbnail for this video said 42 instead of 43
