Bass-baritone Kevin Deas performs "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from Handel's Messiah with Jesse Levine on trumpet, led by Music Director Martin Pearlman. Recorded December 11, 2021. Calderwood Studio at GBH.
Just magnificent! I like how Kevin turned to give honor to the trumpeter while he was doing his solo part. Not only does Kevin have a powerful, rich, soul-stirring voice but he seems to be incredibly humble and kind.
For a bass baritone his legato is amazing.
I love that he turns and honours the trumpeter aaaawww ❤❤
That was beautiful.
This man has a rich voice, that's so great
This is what you call real music n real singing!!!
Bravo to Mr. Levine for his beautiful and expressive playing on the valveless Baroque trumpet... Not an easy thing to play!
Looks like there was spontaneous applause both Friday and Saturday! His voice is so smooth and comforting!
This is a bass with very good diction!! Excellent breath control!
Hard to compare this voice with anyone. Very rich and flawless through all registers, and of a good size. Musicality is beyond excellent, and that kind of humble ease that speaks of years of faithful work for something beyond himself.
I kept waiting for him to really ring. Not how he envisions this aria, I guess. Certainly the message can be a serene, confident statement as well as a more militant admonition, as in the singing of San Ramey, for example. This man's low notes are superb, and I am glad he placed the bass note at the end of the middle section.
Outstanding performance! And.. what a voice!
Oh Kevin. I’m so happy to have found this today. I’ve missed you
Kevin has the sweetest voice and the trumpet player is fantastic💜💙❤️
Glorious! A great feast of music with that wondrous bass and the trumpet speaking to each other.
I "used" him to train when I started singing Bass 2005. Superb Bass-baritone.
This is so soulful. So lovely to feel 🌷💓
First time hearing this singer. Amazing performance. This song feels extra beautiful in his voice
He is the real deal.... greatest singer you never knew. My voice teacher. My everything.
Bravo Mr. Deas .
This is probably my favorite aria in 'Messiah', I have heard many versions of the performance and this is one of the best... what vocal plasticity, what melody of the voice...
BRAVO MR. DЕАS !
What a beautiful deep bass voice. Very suitable for this aria. I love it!
great performance ❤
WOW!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL, POWERFUL AND SOOTHING VOICE ALL IN ONE!! GOD BLESS THIS MAN!! 🎼🎶🎵🌹
Wow, what a fantastic voice. singing w/o music as well.
SPECTACULAR!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is good music. So refreshing
KEVIN DEAS: The man to whom I owe everything for my technique. Everything about Kevin is musicianship on the highest possible levels, and he is the nicest person you could ever meet. No one - NO ONE - has ever or will ever sing this aria better. Effortless. Powerful. Zero tension. Limited movement. At 5:42-5:59.... looks like he barely breathes, and he finishes the phrase with loads of air to spare. Props to the trumpet player, as well as outstanding intonation by the strings of the BB.
It is more than just the singer. A masked band detracts a bit. How do you rate William Warfield?
William has the sweetest voice also, right up there with Kevin. I love them both❤️💜
Strong bass
I love this rendition
That trumpet and the mask thing will be a new classic.
LISTENNNNNN....an Undeniable Indelible forever cemented impression!!!
This is ABSOLUTELY amazing. Such wonderful interpretation and understanding. Wonderful voice.
Thanks for sharing your talent with us. If only!!!!
You are the best of modernitad opera singer
Superb!!!
Wonderful. Handel's music is for all mankind. Greetings from Norway.
Beautiful.
Tremendo barítono: se siente la solemnidad del día final cuando suene la última trompeta cuando regrese por segunda vez el Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores y seamos transformados en un abrir y cerrar de ojos para ir al encuentro de Jesús
This is wonderful!
I love this rendition. Excellent
Marvellous!👏 💐 Kudos to Kevin and Jesse Levine on trumpet. Can't have been easy through the mask!
Maybe the mask should have been on the trumpet bell !
Wow 😳😲😳😳😲😲😳😲😳😲😳😳😲😲😳
this man though gosh this is amazing
The next time Kevin sings this aria, he should dedicate the performance to the memory of Maestra Patricia Burda Janeckova, the legendary Slovak soprano who died last year after a heroic battle with cancer.
❤ Thank you. So so BEAUTIFUL. I also felt I went to a play, the expressions on Mr Deas's face brought the words to life.
Where oh death is your victory
Where oh death is your sting
Fantastic!
Wow..great performance ..I love music 🎶 🎵 🎶 🎵 🎉❤
This is amazing.
bravissimi complimenti ciao da verona
OMG! Simon Estes II !
Compare with Dashon Burton who sang this twice with Boston Baroque. Both glorious performances
quelle voix!!!!!!!! mais tempo un petit peu trop lent.....que c'est beau. bravo
Geile Stimme!!
💜💙💛❤️🌺🌷🎉👍🥰
What kind of trumpet is that?
Top drawer bass!
Like i always the case, it isn't sung as Handel wrote it. The autograph manuscript has the syllable -ti- falling on the first beat and all the syllable being given an equal length. Thus, if sung as written you end up with in-cor-rup-TI-ble. To hear how it is sung if being true to Handel's notation listen to this recording on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/zGv0YxBSTLQ/v-deo.html It is debatable whether a piece of this ecclesiastical magnitude would have received any ornamentation, but assuming it could have, I will say that the ornamentation given by both the trumpetist and the bass singer were quite interesting, capable, and well within what we would expect of an 18th century performance.
How interesting. I've sung this in a chorus many times under many directors and have never heard the pronunciation you have described. It certainly sounds strange to me. I'm thankful for the non-original version. But, I really loved the voice of the soloist you shared. Beautiful!
I listened to the recording you recommended. I never heard that pronounciation. David Thomas has a beautiful voice. The song was done beautifully. I love it.
The hope and confidence in the resurrection of the dead, through faith in Christ and obedience to God's commandments this work proclaims stands in stark contrast to the mask wearing musicians.
Gorgeous, resonant voice! I was stunned that the Trumpeter had to wear a mask (or 2!), as well as the rest of the orchestra. This is nearly unbearable for me to watch, sadly and heartbreakingly so.😢
Magnificent, goose bumps!
Why have they got masks on?
2021.Covid.
Philippe Sly beats this hands down. Not even in the same league. Severe tuning issues from the start.
Playing the trumpet with a stupid mask. Ridiculous. Does he also have a virus filter inside his trumpet for his breath getting expelled out the bell? Was the marvelous vocalist arrested immediately after the concert?
My favourite chorus and I thoroughly enjoyed this rendition.
