Hi 👋🏻 my name is Tom; I’m a music maker and Ableton Certified Trainer. I help people be more creative with Ableton Live. Download instruments and effects and watch tutorial videos at elphnt.io
#ableton #abletonlive #musicproduction #maxforlive #sounddesign
I feel like the most impactful videos of my sound design evolution have been from you and Mr. Bill. You guys are such OG’s and it feels like every single tip you guys share just makes me want to get locked back into producing immediately.
Thanks for the tutorial!
The most underrated UA-cam channel on music production. Thank you for everything ELEPHNT. You are truly amazing.
🙏🏻👏🏻🥳❤️
Love your channel Tom, thank you so much for the amazing content!
This Tool will change my Life!
Looks very similar to the eurorack module "Clouds" from Mutable Instruments for those interested. Beautiful module, and this looks like a beautiful MFL patch. cheers.
Yeah this is a very "modular" way to make music. Especially with those LFOs at the end. Love it!
All your videos are so inspiring my friend. Every time I don't feel the muse I check out your techniques. I hope you know how greatly we all appreciate your work. THANK YOU
Just watching again - this is SOOOO good. Love this device, and am already using it in my productions.
More 'easy' sound design tutorials like this one would be amazing. So simple, but loads of potential.
these videos are getting better n better
This is wonderful! I was trying to figure out how to use it efficiently. Thank you so much!
Your videos are the best. You keep Ableton fresh and alive. Thank you!
Really well explained, accessible and versatile sound design lesson - thanks! 🙏
it's F.....good.... Man. i love it endless possibilities.... thanks for sharing...
Very inspiring ideas, Tom!!! Thank you very much!!!
friend, just want to say thank u for what u doing!
Wow; this is beautiful; thx for sharing! Now i`m going to play around a couple of hours before moving on to the next video. It became really interesting when you introduced the LFOs and the practical use; thx so much ...
wooo yeahhh
Man I love your Videos! Keep going! ❤️
This is a really great demonstration. Beautiful sounds
Currently addicted to your videos!
That was the most relaxing tutorial ever. Beautiful.
🧘🌱
Ircam plugins made history!
It is just amazing
As always the best content, thanks again for your exploration Tom.
2:18 classic wii menu music
omg it sounds so accurate
Ahahahah true! Makes me want to do an ambient version of the wii menu and then end it on a minimalistic techno version of the mii creation theme
@@bernardomarques1427 Do it!
Excellent presentation!
I really like your content! Great stuff!
MORE VIDS PLEASE! 🙏🏻 these are great
Plenty more planned and hopefully coming soon 🤓
I love your videos! You deserve more views!
Yes! Thanks for reminding me of this one. I have to download it for my new comp.
2:18 you just created an Iconic Wii sound :D
It blows my mind that an LFO is limited to Max4Live. Why isn't that part of the standard release? Crazy.
probably cuz it runs on Max MSP which is a different company than ableton. so they will need to pay licensing fees or something to them hence its in the higher price bracket
@@Asiosky211 yeah but i don't think you can claim copyright on the idea of an lfo tool....
@@Asiosky211 Would be weird though because Ableton owns Cycling '74, the company that develops Max. They're essentially paying themselves
Super late reply, but standard ableton does come with an LFO device
You know what would be crazy? If someone made a MOOD pedal-esque max4live device. That’d be amazing 😉
So simple yet so powerful.
Daaamn this video right in time. Some time ago I was searching for granular synthesis stuff and stoped on Quanta, but Quanta's kinda complicated. So this m4l device looks really more simple to use so I'll grab it, thanks for the video
what a brilliant video!! 👏🏼
thanks man ❤
Welcome 😊
2:34 sounds like Nangs :)
James Martin It sure does
Haha, yeah. Totally accident 🙃
Sounds incredible and looks really easy to use. I'm going to try it out the next time I can get into an Ableton session. Huge creative potential for ambient synth noises. Thanks for the heads up!
how did i not know of this channel before today
You explain so good!
Fantastic device!
Would love to be able to save the freezed signal so that when i open my project later, the freezed sound will still be there.
Mmm... that would be good. This device is definitely getting a bit old, so perhaps its time someone did an update and added some refreshed functionality!
@@ELPHNT I understand. That would be lovely of course!
If you or anyone else know of a similiar device where the freezed signal is saved, then please share it. I've ended up with some really nice sounds in GrainFreeze and it would have been so, so nice to have them saved in the device.
Thanks again!
Simpler than simpler
Thanks for your tutorials man! These are so inspiring!
Absolutely loving this device - thanks for the heads up!
your changing the game its crazy wow
Deep insight, thank you so much.
badAssness.!! love this,, Very much appreciated,, thank you..
I really want to play with it hahahaha. Great work Tom! :)
this is the craziest shit I never knew existed. I know how the rest of my day is going lmao.
this is like a easy mini-granulator.
yeah i was just thinking this looks just like granulator but with less knobs
wow
this is great
Could you do a video on Max For Live’s Iota
Noted 😉
@@ELPHNT Yes! do one for Iota ! I've been eyeballing taht one for quite som time!
almost bought it during a nice sale
What would be a easy way to play the tune value with midi notes ?
You could probably build some sort of Max device to do that, but unfortunately without that there isn't really a way to do it 🙁
It's like a maxforlive version of clouds.
🙏
But I think only in live mode...
Thank you for all your videos, great content. I'm curious how you have organized your collections? I like how one collection is "Effects" with folders within for different types but i'm unsure how to do this myself as I can't seem to create folders in them.
You'll need to use the User Library - you can create folders in there, then store things in those and add those folders to your Collections. Have a look at this: help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209774085-The-User-Library
where can i download it from?
HOW DO YOU LOAD THE SOUND IN
Yes
deleted my comment. i tried it and it doesn't work :(
GRACIAS!!
could you do a vid running through uses of the cool max for cats stray cats devices? they are now free from ableton!
🌸
nice microphone and voics over recording. what did you use?
Thanks. It's actually just an SM57, but I do a lot of post processing, noise removal, etc. with iZotope RX.
Is there a version that works for ableton 11/and or mac. Not sure why its not working for me but guessing its because of one of these reasons
There should be no problems with this in Live 11 or on Mac. Do you have Max For Live installed? Do you get any kind of error messages?
Some asmr with headphones on
Any similar plugin for FL Studio 20?
Is there a .dll equivalent?
Tried it on a PC and a Mac, both crash Ableton with the LFO :( was a bit gutted.... Any chance of looking at a fix, the processor goes up to 800% on the Mac lol... Great vid, if it worked :(
Paul D
Easy fix: buy highest spec Mac Pro. Joking aside, I feel you. It happens to me in several scenarios where the lfo would add so much to the sound but instead decides to crash. Really annoying...
I use the LFO a lot but quickly record it on another track using the resample option in the input option or you can right click and freeze the track and drag it to a new audio track. Then delete the track with the LFO. Not ideal but it saves space
@@thomas854 hahaha yeh a nice £20k+ spec pro might do it...
@@DK-qe6uo that's what I ended up doing... It's annoying because it sounds so nice...
could this work on other daws
I have abelton 11 suite and Max for life and I don't have grain freeze. Is it still available and how do you get it?
Yes, GrainFreeze will work in Live 11. Head to the download link in the description and click the Download Device button a little ways down the screen.
Great video's! i've been racking my brain figuring out how you get your screencapture so high resolution though... can you give a guy a tip?
Screenflow 😉 You also need to set your screen's resolution as high as it will go so that the screen capture can capture as many pixels as possible.
Are you Mac or PC?
@@ELPHNT Ah, i see. Both, actually, but i feel like doing my recordings on my macbook would be a bit annoying. But does this mean you record in higher resolutions than your screen? I didn't know that was possible.
@@TheFlamingshirt No, you can only record as high as your screen goes, but on Retina MacBooks, in the Display settings, you have scaling options to show 'Larger Text' or 'More Space'. The Larger Text option technically reduces the resolution, whereas the More Space option actually uses all available pixels of the screen (which is 2880 x 1800 for a 15" Macbook Pro I believe).
@@ELPHNT Ah i see. thanks a lot. I guess you're still zooming to the point of the image still being stretched then, considering you export at 4k still. I guess it's hard to see on my 1440p displays. I just thought about bicubic scaling and whatnot. i'll see if different scaling options do anything for me, considering ableton has flat and unaliased graphics...
Is the GrainFreeze available for Windows?
Should be. Max For Live devices are OS independent.
Notice on the download page that this plugin is from 2011!
Hey, are you the voice of Pursuit of Wonder?
The download link for this doesn't work anymore. It looks like monolake's website is down.
You don't need to go to Monolake's website to download, just scroll down a little and hit the blue Download Device button 😉
@@ELPHNT Ugh, I'm so blind. lol. Thanks for the help!!
Hi Tom, love your videos, i'm already using many of your tips!
I need your help though, I can't seem to set the Audio Track input to GrainFreeze, like you do at 3:50. I guess it may be a problem with installing the device? I'm new to Ableton and don't really know how this stuff works. Thanks!
Setup a new Audio Track with CMD or CTRL + T and you should find the input section near the bottom. By default, it will probably be Ext. Input, so select that dropdown and you should be able to change it to any other track within your session.
@@ELPHNT Thanks! I did it. Didn't realize that in the video, you named the track 'GrainFreeze' so that's why I got confused. Thanks again, great content
Could you please share the LFO device from this video? Haven't found one.
It's the max for live lfo included in ableton by default . You don't need to install it.
You'll find it under the MaxForLive Audio Effects in Live 10.
ok so ive downloaded it, but it keeps crashing for some reason :/ it kinda feedbacks and distorts like crazy so that my mixer knobs goes red and doesn't get back to normal anymore :(
I can't seem to get the grainfreeze to work. It doesn't show any sound file in the window and I cant insert one. The track is in the chanel, I.e if I insert the granulator is does show the wavefile.
It doesn't work by dropping samples on it - you need to record sound into the buffer using the Freeze button. Watch the video again carefully and you'll see it in action.
@@ELPHNT I see, Thank you senpai
ELPHNT thank youuuuuuuuu !!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was having the same issue 😹
Does it work for fl studio?
Sorry, Ableton only
@@ELPHNT alright, thanks for the reply :)
is there a way to remove / smooth the "clicky" tails on this device? Example at 2:01. This one is amazing too :)
Unfortunately not in a simple way. It is definitely one of the caveats of the device. You could try using an EQ to remove those particular frequencies but it'd be tricky. The best thing I've found is to just change the Grain Position control slightly until the clickiness disappears.
ELPHNT Gotcha, still this is a great audio mangling tool! Thank you 🙏
can you use this with Logic ?
I guess nah
Sorry, no. Ableton only...
Alchemy has a granular mode
Videos like these make me regret starting with Fl studio
Almost all granular synthesis vsts will be able to do what is shown in this video. This one is actually a simplistic version of what is offered by many others. I don't have a free vst to recommend you, though they are available, but there is an Android app called "grainstorm" that has all these features and many more.
Ken Hensch oh thanks I’ll check some
If you own Ableton then get the updated Granulator for free.
yo does this work with ableton live lite 10? When I use it it says that this device is not made for this version of live.
Frijolex You need MaxforLive to use this. It comes built in with Live Suite and you can add it on to Live Standard. It’s not cheap but I highly recommend getting Live Suite.
Hey, I tried to use this max device and it doesn't work, it doesn't let me put an audio into it. Do you know what could be the issue?
i have the same problem :(
Are you trying to drag and drop audio into it? You need to record audio into it using the Freeze button. It doesn't accept drag and drop. Place it on an existing audio track, run some audio through it for a while and then hit the Freeze button.
@@ELPHNT Thank you so much! I had no idea that I had to do it like that.
hey im new here, question, do u know how to make max4live devices?
There are quite a few resources online, so I'd recommend doing some searching. This is also a great video to check out: ua-cam.com/video/tkXz8sf-KwU/v-deo.html
is this Live 10 ?
I'm using Live 10 in the video, but GrainFreeze should work in Live 9 as well.
@@ELPHNT thanks a lot for your consideration and for all the superb content you offer us, each time much appreciated !!
Grainilaizer
This is basically an intuitive PaulXstretch
Haha, kinda 🙃 You can definitely get a lot more extreme with Paul Stretch 😋
your webpage elphnt.io/ is somehow not functioning, hope you're still up
i can't figure out how to even get my audio into the grain freeze.. lol
You have to record it in. Play some audio on the track you have GrainFreeze on, then after a few seconds of audio, hit the Freeze button on GrainFreeze to capture the last few seconds of audio into the device.
So sadly i wasnt told that you had to have suite to us this. bummer
Is there anything like this as vst to use in cubase?
It's not free unfortunately, but try this: www.tb-software.com/TBProAudio/ab_lm.html
Whoa this tutorial should not be free
