    Hey everyone, this'll be sort of a 'goof-ups' pin with additional info:
    - I mention in the Grimstone review that the angel Leo is looking for his brother; I think it's actually just a friend. A brother in angelic arms perhaps!!
    - Technically, Grimstone's setting is also called Lone Star, but it's often referred to as Hell in-game, and that allowed for me to make the easy dunk on Texas.
    - A couple of people have pointed out that in Attactics, grunt columns don't take damage from melee combat, but do from ranged attacks. Another couple of people said that the clip I showed had a grunt not taking damage. Both are true. The grunt in the middle in the clip didn't take damage, but the others did and that's what I was pointing out. I'm of the opinion that the "grunts do not take damage" tip in the game is not very well communicated, because taking damage is taking damage, regardless of it coming from an archer. All they have to do is put 'melee' in that tip and it'll be fine.
    - It's true that I am being a little uncharitable to Magic Garden; a lot of the true mechanical depth lies in getting the cherry. I maintain that I would have liked for the changing seasons to change SOMETHING other than the aesthetics, like a new enemy type or a hazard or something. I'd also say that the devs have talked on social media that they don't want people to obsess over cherries, so if I'm purely grading Magic Garden on its gold path, I feel it comes up short. They maybe should have designed a more score-oriented gold goal to force players to engage more with the different potion types and racking up chains.
    - I didn't elaborate in the Miasma Tower section, but that last puzzle to get you into the time capsule room of the basement is very nefarious. The passcode to start the puzzle involves finding the owner of MPI's name and using a first and partial last name to bring up a binary puzzle that represents the UFO 50 'Random'-sorted menu. You then find those games and take the first letters of their EXECUTABLE name (for example, Cyber Owls' executable is "WNST", short for Winston) to come up with the final password. None of the secret solvers have found a way past this room yet, though they're exploring messing with binary code, the UFO letters in the Heart minigame of Campanella 3, etc. Changing the system clock as far as I can tell doesn't open the capsules. This could just be a Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie situation where some stuff will only be there to tease you until they decide to add content in a future patch, or something like that anyway.

      No, what it is is that Lonestar has been dragged into Hell. You are literally Cowboys from Hell. Better than being a C.O.W-Boy of Moo Mesa. Also, it turns out the best character in Grimstone is Lee, because he's a Final Fantasy Blue Mage, and that's always awesome to me.

    I agree with most of the letter grades for these games. And I like how you categorized them and gave mention to similar indie titles. I still can't believe that a package this cheap has so much replay value. No matter how challenging and frustrating a game could get, there's always a perfect opportunity to stop, pick a different game and return after you've cooled off. A crazy achievement for the devs.

    one thing about warptank that makes finding secrets easier, is after you beat the game, flowers appear in every stage, hinting at the location of a coffee. it won't directly point out where the secret is, but instead gives you a clue to the general area.

    I think you're pretty spot on for all of the games in this collection, but the D on Magic Garden hurts. I think that special sauce you're missing is the potion system and how it interacts with the games hard limit of 200 oppies saved.
    As a pure, "play till you die" score attack game, Magic Garden would definitely be less than mid. Slowly racking up points as safely as possible until you make a mistake would be suuuuper boring after a while, but realizing you only get 30~ potions during a run really changed how I approach the game.
    How am I going to use these limited potions to score as many points as possible? How long can I last without clearing the board? What's the most efficient way to keep my multiplier going as long as possible while not just scoring points but also picking up more oppies to fuel my streak.
    The risk/reward calculations are absolutely mental because beating the game was easy, but getting a high score has made me a certified Magic Garden junkie.

    • @MattJ.Wilson
      @MattJ.Wilson  2 місяці тому +5

      That's a good review! I think going for the cherry in Magic Garden is where a lot of that strategizing is really going to play a role. The gold goal may just be misrepresenting the game's strengths, because that's what I based my review on as I was going through each game.

    • @nyahnyahson523
      @nyahnyahson523 2 місяці тому +6

      @@MattJ.Wilson There's a few games where going for the cherry encapsulates a lot more of the game than the gold.
      Case in point, in Rock On! Island, to perfect each level you need to take no damage, and this makes it so you have to take on a completely different thought process. Until you get the economy set up, it actually turns out that the character is the most powerful turret in the game.
      This also means you're thinking about the weaknesses of each enemy more, at least until you can get the economy up and running. If one wave is supposed to have a ton of enemies, you have to figure out if a rock, spear, or fire is the best for the job, or whether you'll try to just pump yourself up and hope you can get the economy flowing before too long.

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum Місяць тому

      @@nyahnyahson523 But the cherries are just supposed to be bonus challenges. I don't want to be forced into perfection to appreciate a game. I think people obsessive about difficulty and how big their video game cocks are are trying to justify why "actually if you don't get the cherry then you just didn't GET it, man, not like I do", just another way gamers find to feel smugly superior over others. Don't like it, won't support it.

    Alright, I've watched through, time for second less pedantic comment.
    I think the fascinating thing about UFO 50 really is the fact that everyone who I've seen talk about or review it has very different evaluations on most of the games (Save for Combat ants. Lol.). For example I have seen a few people who are REALLY enjoying score-attacking Magic Garden, while other people bounced HARD off of any games that required mapping or memory. So the whole collection really has something for everyone somewhere in it.
    Also generally very well presented video! Thanks for making it and sharing it : )

    The gimmick in attactics is that grunts dont take direct damage in columns, which they don't specify. In the footage you showed, you can see one grunt no-sell a direct attacker, while another dies to an arrow (indirect).
    It's a bit poorly conveyed, and im sure someone else has already told you, but yeah.

      It says that directly onscreen in the game, but it's not explained well, because it isn't clear whether "columns" means from their perspective (horizontally), or ours (vertically), or how many units count as a column.

    My favorite is Rail Heist, man did i had a blast, starting off clumsy goofer, ending up master ninja bringer of death and clever stealth master, and also making a chicken ladder is hilarious and made me win my cherry. Porgy is very close after, and very very weirdly enough, i had fun with combatants... because i found an exploit and cheesed all the game to cherry, and it reminded me my childhood finding an exploit and being proud at showing off and beating the game. Mortol and Mortol 2 were very fun too. Campenella was fun... i'll stop here because i can go on for way too long.

Now, I haven't played this yet because I'm the last person around without a Steam account so I'm waiting/hoping it's coming to Switch, BUT, if that never happens, this alone would get me to cave because I want to try a lot of these. Much of it is very much the kinds of video games I still love most. It's such an ambitious project. I didn't even really know about all the meta lore behind it, it's pretty interesting. I'm sure they're considering other platforms. It's also in beta in Portmaster to work with third-party retro handhelds like Retroid/Anbernic's so that could be an option for people too. And of course it works great on the Steam Deck! But it doesn't scale perfectly when stretched to full, so I use the provided CRT shader to balance the pixels a bit.

    Resolution, color palate, and inputs were part of the design spec that all the games had to follow. One of those was that it was d-pad and two buttons only. That means none of the games have pause or select buttons. You might not like it, but it was part of the limited design requirements that made them rethink how to make the games.

    I could SWEAR I have played "Quibble Racing" before. Like, the game, as it exists, on my Windows '98 computer, in the early 00's. Exactly as it functions in this game, with the cheating and the training and the sponsoring and the perma-death and even the racing animations. My friend and I played it for a few hours one day and I LOVED it.
    I very clearly remember the presentation wasn't as good. Graphics way more simple, more of the menus just drop down, I think, none of the players actually had portraits. But even down to the name of the game and the creatures involved, the Quibbles, even how they looked I have VIVID memories of playing it when I was a child.

      There was an earlier version of Quibble Race in like 2004 I think? As a Flash game or something. The same goes for Devilition which was previously a Klik & Play game called Demonika. It's neat to see the ancient indie roots they pulled in for this.

    I expected to watch this over the course of a few days, but I was so engaged by it I ended up just powering through it all in one day. You're pretty funny! I think one of my favorite jokes was bemoaning how complex Sword 2 got and longing for the simplistic days of Sword. I don't know why but that really got me in that lightning round minigame segment.
    One thing I'm surprised you didn't ever mention is the music but that might have just been because it ranges from "that's fine but will get annoying after a while" to "this is stuck in my head for weeks at a time and I can't tell if I'm suffering or delighted". And living up to the UFO 50 theme of "it's insane you're charging such low prices for so much STUFF", you can buy the full OST on Bandcamp for seven freaking dollars. Yeah, some of the songs are five second jingles and most are minute long loops but it is _300+_ catchy little tunes for all your catchy little tune needs. And of course you can just listen to them for free in the browser.
    One of my favorite things about UFO 50 is it has a few consistent settings, and some of them are unexpected connections. I like Amy a bunch, and she shows up a lot; she's a kid you can pick in Hot Foot, the credits of Party House show that she's the character you're playing as hosting the party (literally just called The Host but it's clearly her), she shows back up in Fist Hell being billed as the Party Queen fittingly enough, and the player character of Night Manor opens the game having left one of Amy's parties angry (apparently, she was "out of line"). This puts Amy in a fun little domestic, urban setting with some dark, supernatural features because the games feature both zombies coming back from the dead and, you know, all the shit going on in Night Manor. Almost every space game is in the same general universe with Alpha being a consistent feature. You're saving a Grimstone town in Devilition and Maria (also in Grimstone) is one of the bandits in Rail Heist. It's so cool to see these recurring characters and themes crop up in other games!
    Speaking of Grimstone, I've only played little bits of each game so I could get a taste of each one, but Grimstone might be my favorite. You talk about how people might have really need to have grown up on old RPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior/Quest to like it, and that's me! I'm that guy! I grew up on all these NES and SNES-era RPGs and I love them jank and grinding and all! The "Western in Hell" setting is so cool to me and such a fun little novelty, and I happened to accidentally pick four of the most interesting characters to me personally for my party! (I missed one character I think is neat but someone else I picked filled their role so I don't feel like I missed out). It's such a neat little "what if Final Fantasy just happened to be cowboys" what if and it really stole my heart the moment I started playing. Some of my other favorites are Camouflage, Party House, Valbrace, and I really _really_ want to like Porgy but it was a tough sell to get into, I did not know which way to go to get any good upgrades so I kinda felt lost. I'm gonna give it another go with a little more guidance because I really want to enjoy it, it's very cute and seems like it could be so much fun if I could just figure out which way to go!

    I think I mostly agree with the rankings except I'd put Magic Garden higher (though I like the combo system, I think the scoring should be better if killing blue blobs vs rescuing pink ones was better balanced) and Porgy much lower.
    The already-backtrack-heavy nature of Porgy is further weighed down by its limited amount of items you can equip at any time. In the deepest area, you pretty much always take a flashlight and more efficient fuel add-on, leaving you with just two items to experiment with just like at the start of the game. Even its dash ability needs work. In theory, you have to use it strategically to avoid enemies but in practice, its fuel consumption means that you are afraid to use it during the longer dives which already take you through already-explored areas.

    • @scottdick296
      @scottdick296 2 місяці тому

      I think a big thing driving the disparity in some people's ratings is their relative tolerance for grinding and backtracking vs "one slip up and you're restarting" style difficulty, since those are the two main methods the devs use to pad out the relatively small amount of content in each game.
      I'm in the same camp as Matt, in that I don't really mind making a bunch of similar dives to grab one or two upgrades per trip (or screw up and die), but restarting from scratch every time I miss an input is pretty frustrating.

    • @xJayhawkFANx
      @xJayhawkFANx Місяць тому

      That's kind of the point of the game, though. The game wants you to combo blue slimes to get big scores. The pink blobs are just a means to end the game so you can't just farm blue blobs forever so you're on a time limit. A majority of your score is supposed to come from the blue blobs.

    I'm not trying to say you're wrong -- these are all opinions after all, but I don't believe you were playing Magic Garden as intended... or actually you were, which is wrong.
    Magic Garden is a classic arcade high score game. While you can save all your blobby friends to technically complete the game, the real goal is to turn your friends into enemies so you can defeat them for higher and higher scores! The risk/reward balance and very well thought out point multiplier really makes this game special.
    I know high score games aren't everyone's cup of tea, but Magic Garden is masterfully done and I feel is a solid B+ game.

    I love your review (and also UFO50, but that goes without saying). My favorite game in the collection is probably Party House, but Campanella 2 is a close second. I actually like the whole Campanella series quite a lot. The controls take some time to get used to, but after that, it feels great to play (to me at least).
    And I actually found Combatants (which almost everyone seems to hate) pretty fun to play in mutiplayer, when both sides are on equal footing. But it would have certainly benefited from being a little faster.
    I don't mind the lack of minimaps in most of the games, since I find memorization of space layouts quite fun, but I agree that a lot of the games would have benefited from an options menu and it wouldn't break the immersion at all (when hyper contender can have options, why not for example combatants?)

  • @DachasDacha
    @DachasDacha 2 місяці тому +2

    Divers was one of the first games I beat and also one of my favorites in the collection so I'm really happy to see someone else actually enjoy it since most of the people I know hated it or just found it boring (fair). I love the atmosphere and how the game gives you literally no help, which you can say about a lot of the games, but this one felt especially jarring to be thrown into.
    Another thing that wasn't mentioned in the video cause I don't think it matters too much when it comes to reviewing these but Divers ALSO being a part of the Barbuta lore (or at least I'm pretty sure it is maybe somebody can correct me) makes me so happy. I find it really cute that the 3 most polarizing games are vaguely a part of the same world.
    Also it definitely is annoying to run into a lvl 1 eel when you're just trying to go back to camp, but as i got deeper and deeper I ended up kinda liking that aspect? It ends up becoming a challenge in itself to avoid the enemies which you can do pretty easily once you learn some of their movement patterns. I didn't even know you could avoid piranhas by keeping them in the dark until I was in the final area. But as you go deeper the enemies obviously get stronger so avoiding them becomes even more necessary. While it's not the most challenging thing to just avoid most enemies I still like the thrill of running away and avoiding overworld enemies altogether while you're sitting at low health or durability or even when you're trying to go deeper and you don't wanna waste as few resources getting to your destination.
    Anyways I just hope you end up having just as good of a time with Divers cause this world needs more 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗘𝗡𝗝𝗢𝗬𝗘𝗥𝗦™

      yea, possibly barbuta-connected but also post-apocalyptic themes seem to carry through a lot of the games in the collection as well. wouldn't be surprised if it connected to mortol in some way. for now i'm just going for the gold but the cherry stuff sounds interesting to seek out so i might do both for Divers.

  • @wolvertox311
    @wolvertox311 2 місяці тому +4

    The collections games have way more in common with the history and design of the MSX than the NES. Ufosofts history mirrors many classic pc developers and the actual mock console in game is a computer.

    • @MattJ.Wilson
      @MattJ.Wilson  2 місяці тому +4

      I think it's an amalgamation of a lot of things. In an interview, several devs pointed to various sources of inspiration, primarily computers and consoles they didn't own. One of the six did in fact list the NES as their primary inspo, but yeah, definitely MSX, or pre-Macintosh Apple, or the Amstrad CPC, are touchstones as well. I also think the Turbografx 16 plays a bit of inspiration as well, from the sound chip to the lesser restrictions on color palette, and the general sprite and font sizes.

Although I will say, all three Campanella games have pretty easy final bosses; they have pretty basic patterns and aren't super aggressive. So it was always a relief to get there and be like "oh okay this is a victory lap". Of course, Campanella 2 has you do the escape sequence too but thankfully I got through that with plenty of time to spare as well. IDK what I would've done if I failed there.
