SHOULD F1 RETURN TO AIDA? iRacing Mercedes W12 at Okayama [v2.0]

  • Опубліковано 28 гру 2021
  • The Okayama (Aida if you're old) circuit hosted two races in the mid-1990s before disappearing off the calendar forever. It made appearances in Grand Prix Manager and Grand Prix 2, as well as the official F1 game in 1995.
Since then, it's become a staple of the iRacing rookie series, being that it's one of the free tracks On THe SeRViCE, and is the setting for more MX-5 wrecks than you can shake a stick at.
But what would the Mercedes W12 be like around there, and could this track be upgraded to one day host F1 again?
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

The downsides about it being in a remote area aren’t just about the fans, but also the teams and F1 personnel who have to travel a long distance. That was the reason they ditched Korea, because it was a 5 hour drive from Seoul where they flew into.

And if I’m not mistaken it’s also the main reason why they chose Paul Ricardo instead of Magny Cours for the return of the French GP in 2018.

The circuit isn't that far from big population centers, just 50 km's or so... more of an inconvenience for fans than F1 teams which at the time were a bit smaller I think. But yeah, didn't help the cause. It also probably fell off the calendar because there was already a race in Japan, on the much more popular Suzuka track, so there was no need for 2. In fact the race held at Aida (its name back then) was called "Pacific GP".

Okayama is a really good circuit, but will probably not host a f1 event in the future, as Suzuka is cemented on the calendar and even so, Fuji Speedway would be the key replacement. Still, I think it will be a good Grand Prix to have :)

I've been there a couple times. I watched Super Formula there a couple years ago and it was a great time. Back when it was still called Aida I went around the track in a civic type R. It didn't feel as claustrophobic as it looked with the F1 car.
Since people are suggesting tracks, Circuit Mont Tremblant is another former F1 track, it's currently owned by Lawrence Stroll, and is like a longer faster version of this. It'd be neat to see a modern F1 car go around it

To answer your question - No, modern F1 can't and won't return to Okayama. Not just because getting the track up to spec with modern safety standards is a hassle of its own, there's the big issue with logistics. IIRC, even back in the 90s, F1 teams found difficult to get to the track (afterall, that is the reason why they went to Paul Ricard and not Magny-Cours for the French Grand Prix, the circuit is in the middle of nowhere), not to mention the first hospitals and medical centers outside the circuit are pretty far away.
Plus... If Japan would want to host a second race, chances are said race will most likely go to Fuji, even if Toyota isn't involved in the sport, anymore.

That qoute where you said "There's an apex there somewhere" reminds me of the apex marker used at this year's WEC races in Bahrain. Can't remember which corner it was.
As for the actual circuit in this video, even Super Formula forgets this place. They double-headed Motegi and Suzuka this year, rather than double-heading Aida, or even looking for a seventh track.

That took me back! It does have some lovely scenery, but it wouldn't really suit today's big cars.
If you're wondering about other Japanese tracks, what about the bike track (non-oval part) of the Twin Ring at Motegi? Indy went to the oval which suggests it can host a big event, but it's been a while since I've seen any bike racing there and I can't remember if it's big enough for F1. There are some epic moments in history there concerning a certain Signor "Il Dotore" Rossi!
Hope you're better soon. You've been having a rough time of it recently, haven't you? If you feel the need to give YT a break so you can recover, just do it. We won't be going anywhere. Take care of yourself first and foremost! And try not to crash, virtually or otherwise!

Twin Ring Motegi is currently an FIA Grade 2 circuit. While it probably could host F1 with a facility upgrade (and its reasonable proximity to Tokyo) the circuit owners (which happen to be Honda) won't spend that money on the facility when they already have a grade 1 track hosting the Grand Prix (Suzuka). I mean they even bothered fixing the oval after it was damaged in the 2011 earthquake.

If they can greenlight Jeddah, they could easily greenlight this(being facetious, obviously). But the comparisons to RBR aren't unwarranted. It feels from this perspective anyway, like a mash-up of RBR and Monaco, minus the bumps, but the layout invokes Barcelona in a way. It certainly would make for an interesting race, come the new regs, even if it was a parade, it'd be a pretty (and fast) one. I see no reason not to bring the pitlane exit to the late-apex, come exit of T1, it's certainly the safest place to make it work, and if the limit line stayed in the same place, they'd basically be up to speed by the time they got to the merge.
As an aside, what is the length from Start Line to T1, it's got to be pushing Spa's record, if not as.. spectacular.
Edit: On second approximation, T2-4 might be a concern, a bit more run-off (using the hill), and puling the walls back so we don't get a new Raidillon, and I think we'd be about there.

From driving point of view, this has been one of my favourites since the good old "Formula 1". Too bad they widened the rather unique esses at the end of sector 1, now it's quite inconsequential, basically a twisty straight. F1 may be too fast, but I'd say it's ideal for slower single seaters and touring cars, i.e. the kind of cars the most popular local series use. But it would be kind of interesting to have a real "max downforce" track on the F1 calendar, since it's slower than Hungaroring, but you still drive at speeds that generate downforce.

I still struggle to get why the wheel has to be strong enough to break your fingers.... cant you set an appropriate torque setting that allows you to feel and react realistically without losing an arm every time it feeds back?! I mean even in actual crashes the steering column is likely to break before it sends you the feedback to the wheel and rip your hands in half

    • @f1jones544
      @f1jones544 2 роки тому

My wheel does the exact same if I'm not gripping it. These wheels have exaggerated motion when there's nothing countering the force they make. The sensation it provides is an illusion to feel like a real wheel to trick your brain and in doing so counterintuitively has little relation to how a steering wheel reacts on a real car if unattended. When you're holding the wheel all that motion somehow becomes very subtle.

A deal with Donnington already fell through in the middle of half the circuit being torn up and ruined to meet F1's Tilke era standards of turning every sweeper into a sharp, single line apex. Brands would need to be defaced beyond recognition to host an event given its lack of runoffs. Same goes for Watkins Glen, etc.
If you love a classic circuit that hasn't hosted a race since the 80's, the last thing you should want is F1 going there.
