Am I the only one who considers this to be a piece of high art?
NO.
yo, right here.
no, I concur
late to the discussion -- but for decades have thought this scene, (the dialogue and framing of the shot)
rivals the soliloquy of Hamlet in context of the American Experience --- to be seconded by the hair cut
scene with the discussion about the proclivities of John Wayne --- "I installed to way mirrors at his pad in Brentwood --
He came to the door in a dress." 🤔
No, you are not.
In an interview with Shock Cinema magazine, Tracy Walter said that they only had time (because they were losing the light) to shoot two takes: one in the long shot, and the other in the medium shot. And that's what makes it so fucking GREAT--there is zero fast-cutting, close-up to close-up, that would disrupt the scene..you really get involved in what Miller is saying. And Tracy Walter added that, even today when people see him on the street, they shout "A plate of SHRIMP!"
That’s super interesting, thanks for sharing that! I’ve always wondered why the shot suddenly changes.
I love moments in the twilight hours.
Then everyone realises they're next to a seafood restaurant.
Arguably the best film of the talking picture era.
Is there a better silent picture?
So great. I knew it was, then; I know it is, now; I know it’ll always be.
@@niandra_t No, but it's not arguable.
You said something there my man.
𝐘𝐎𝐔❜𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓❗❗❗
I still reference "Plate of Shimp" to this day.
So do I, brother. Great minds think alike!
winston smith same
Or "plate"or "shrimp", just think about Forrest Gump for an instant...
But you know what he's talking about, right. It happens a lot to me too. Don't know what that's about.
Yh, you got it.. me too lol
One of the best movie monologues of all time...
mm, yeah...
Did you eat a lot of acid, Carl, back in the hippy days?
Ya no joke/meme!
Yes ! That and the rooftop scene from "Bladerunner"

"The more you drive , The less intelligent you are"
I guess that's why Frank likes to drive so much.

Makes sense cuz walking and biking really engage your brain

Was I supposed to laugh in the theatre back in 1985 when Otto threw the white shirt and the sombrero in the fire? Because no one else did. That makes me feel like an outcast, a misfit, an oddball.
One of my favorite scenes ever
Yeah, there's more than the sum of it's parts in this scene. :)
I NEVER caught this! The book Emilio throws into the fire! It's a gag book making fun of the Scientology book 'Dianetics'! A book that was a best seller at the time. And man, the speech this character (played by the wonderful Tracey Walker) gives to Emilio mirrors the insane social teachings of it.
@Admin User You saw it in an actual theatre! Wow! I live on an island in Canada and I saw it on some 80's "movie channel". Yea, they needed filler? ;p
The Mayans invented television....how about when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor or Napoleon fought at Gettysburg or the Vikings landed on the moon? Why don't they teach this stuff in school?
@@blaineedwards8078 I think they still teach true history at august institutes such as Faber College
@@KenSpreitzer "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son." ....Dean Wormer
I remember other scenes with the book in it.
One of the other repo guys gave it to Otto and said “You better read that book-it’ll change your life.”
One of the greatest films of all time!
One of my top all-time favorite movies. I’ll never get tired of watching it.
You do a lot of acid Miller?? Ya know back in the hippy days
Weird coincidence , he says it just as I read your comment.. he's RIGHT
Same exact thing happened to me!! And when I wrote "same" in the first sentence, Bob said "same"! Universal consciousness at work.
I love how Miller just continues, as if he didn’t hear the Acid question at all
In 1984 the Seattle Times rated this in top 10 movies of the year. The next year I bought the VCR and soundtrack album. MY son was born in 86. He is now a software engineer at Google. He quotes Repo Man all the time, "Put it on a plate, son, you will enjoy it more."
Check out the French movie: DIVA
This is definitely the most important part of the movie, not just because so much of it is true (I firmly believe that "the more you drive, the less intelligent you are." I can feel it happening every time I commute! It is also important because in the end, Miller is the only guy who really understood all along what was happening, and his being the only one able to get into the car parallels directly King Arthur being the only one who could remove the sword from the stone. So classic....
Like the comparison to Excalibur. Deep insight…
@@StillLateToTheParty thanks! I forgot that I made this comment! Getting old…
@@rftulie just hop in a flying saucer 🛸
Classic !
The life of a knight of Camelot is always intense.
More than double the time exists between when this movie came out and the "Hippie days" to when this move cam out and now.
“Suppose you’re thinking about a plate of shrimp”
These Timeless Words of Wisdom are more true today than ever.
The more you drive, the less intelligent you are. Reading is about left to right, whereas driving, is about moving forward, like an arrow in flight.
love this movie the way it introduces people to form there own opinions and view society differently was awesome for its time
It perfectly captures what "punk" was all about. Which you put so well, "introduces people to form their own opinions, and view society differently"
That WAS the essence of "punk"
How there isn't a car riding round GTA with a trunk full of dead aliens I will never know
To be fair, J Frank Parnel worked on the Neuton Bomb. I kind of figure that is what was in the trunk. Though that doesn't explain the car flying around in the end. Though maybe all the drugs, you know, back in the hippie days, might explain that.
The Truth was just Otto on weed
"Plate...or shrimp or PLAYDUH SHRIMP"
Plate + shrimp = plate of shrimp
You got it. Miller is the last person in the world anyone would ever suspect as a textbook example of how interstellar repo aliens go about repossessing their '64 Chevy Malibu time machines.
I believed millers theory on UFOs and time machines for a long time. It's my own organic conclusion. I'm glad I have millers support now. 😁
Anyone I’ve considered a friend I’ve at least shown them this once
How did they react to it? Did it turn out to be a good predictor of your compatibility?
Watch what they burn. The first - that book - I think is a Scientology reference, ‘Matter over Mind’ by X Rum B...
Then a lab coat.
Then he starts to talk about South America just after they burn the hat.
This is an unsettling look at the world that can open up once you begin to doubt the media and your surroundings.
It just happens to be hilarious too.
yep!
Otto's skinny tie is back in style. Hell, his entire wardrobe is... 80s rule
no difference between a ufo and a time machine... SPOT ON
Lmao the best scene of all time "you got it, time machines"
“Bermuda triangles,” like there’s more than one 😂
@@defchan1970
Well, there are several places roughly in the form of a triangle where the frequency of anomalous activity is much higher than average. There is only one Bermuda triangle, but there is another ocean-based triangle known as Dragon's Triangle, in addition to a lake-based one called Michigan Triangle, and there are also land-based triangles. So, who knows what Miller knows, maybe his tongue slipped, or he had a brain-fart, or perhaps he simply did not give adequate consideration to his choice of words, but I am sure Miller was quite aware of the existence of multiple triangles. All I know is who I'll be calling when it's time to install two-way mirrors!!!
@@defchan1970I hadn’t actually caught that joke, thanks! It’s great that I can still find (learn) new jokes after almost (gasp!) 40 years!
"Yeah, you got it"
(Otto looks on obliviously)
"Time machines!"
Miller’s timing on this is absolute perfection! The audience gets to feel like they figured it out, then get confirmation that they did.
I think about this scene often
This has always been my excuse for not getting a driver's license.
Every now and then I love to watch this scene. Also Military Surplus Store scene from Falling Down and scenes from Momento.
2:07 I love the proud look on his face he says "I think a lot about this kind of stuff".
Tracy Walter should be hosting Ancient Aliens!
Yeah, you got it...aliens!
I find it funny that they are burning clothes.
i think about this scene everyday sometimes
This stuff is epic.
This and his "I installed two way mirrors in his pad in Brentwood and he come to the door in a dress." are two of the greatest lines in cinema history.
Still pure Gold
Shaespeare would envy this dialogue.
The Mayans invented TV? Cool!
Why did he have to throw that in there! I would've read that book.😢📚👨🎓0:00
Cosmic unconsciousness... great scene.
"the more you drive , the less intelligent you are"
I use to see "Miller" at the Beverly Hills WholeFoods at lunch time on a pretty regular basis. That guy is all-Pro!

When the Rodriguez Brothers stop for a soda, what's the special on the diner window?
"Plate o'shrimp"
Miller really connects the dots there
I looked up lattice in movies cuz of that family guy clip and I got here.
Surfin' the net
Miller is pretty advanced. 'The more you drive . . the less intelligent ya are.' Only someone, who has never driven can say something like that. I used to drive a lot more than I do now. I sort of understand what he says, but I'm 'tainted,' I've driven a car, before. Plus. The UFO thing is well thought out. And. Miller made a 'tactical' error. Many, who disappear from S America, materialize at sanctuary cities in N America. When you watch 'Repo Man,' 1984, for the first time, you latch onto the 'eat a lot of acid, Miller.' You have to watch this a few times.
Hands down my favorite scene in ALL of movie history.
"Two hemispheres are fundamentally at odds"

Maybe the greatest existentialistic film scene in history!
One of my most favorite movies and best clips! Miller! :-)
It's all a part of the cosmic unconciousness... I can do all my best thinking on the bus.
Tracey walter is an amazing actor he nailed this role
He was always in Jonathon Demmes movies. He was great in Philadelphia.
The best scene in the movie. Great camera work by Robby Muller in this scene (and in the whole movie). Tracey Walter is a great character actor who has been in more than 50 movies. Check him out in "Erin Brockovich".
Tracey Walter is always great. I've seen him play basically the same character (himself?) a few times, as a hotel clerk or bartender who's a little sleazy but also way wiser than you would expect. He has a great part like that in Bob Dylan's film "Masked & Anonymous", one of my favorites that hardly anyone knows about.
Plate or plate of shrimp… Cinematic masterpiece right there
Otto throws a sombrero in the fire, so random, lol
Find one in every car...... you'll see.
My favourite scene from my favourite movie
One of the greatest films of all time.
.. How the fck do I know? .. unless somebody tells you..
I saw Repo Man when it was available on VHS. I love how this scene says so many things about modern-day society's flaws but criticizes it in such a way full of flaws,
But the Mayans actually did invent television. That's why they disaappeared....sucked into the great cosmic vortex along with "Mod Squad" and "The Brady Bunch"
I saw Repo Man on a tuesday night at a rep cinema in 1984. I was bored. Then I wasn't.
I think you mean “sucked into the great cosmic unconsciousness.”
Oh, I love this silly little movie.
When random things are connected I always there's aplate of shrimp and get the funniest looks from the person I say it to.
My neighbor is a huge stoner and hes exactly like this guy
This is possibly the greatest channel ever, and this is the best quality of Repo Man I've ever seen. Wish the DVD would look that good.
But it's ok!
I love this flick

I have a way easier time believing flying saucers are time machines than some alien ship.
I agree with you, I have heard before I saw this scene that UFOS are Time Machines from the future and the reason why The Government lies is because there are some people who aren't ready or can handle the truth. Look at The Religious Right, they believe that anything outside their warp views of reality are of The Devil and those fools are to close minded to understand anything.
@@stainshield they lie because there is a cold war going on in time and our ignorance is their greatest weapon. Once everyone realizes time travel is possible the destruction increases exponentially... which is what leads to the time machines in the first place, which is how the war starts. It’s a paradox.
