Honestly, I see what you're saying about the looks. Unlike the other public figures, artists that you mentioned, whitney's looks were a major part of her stardom, talent and general appeal to society. Tina Turner, for example, her looks weren't as much of a "thing" as whitney's, which is why having someone who looks within the same category of beauty as whitney is important ALONG with superb acting.
    Thanks for the review.

I think when it comes to biopics of icons, they have to cast phenomenal, very accomplished actors. Ie Denzel as Malcom x, Angela as Tina. You need someone who can hit a performance out the park.. no matter what they look like. If their acting is excellent, u won't even notice the looks

I have seen the movie, and Naomi did win me over. She really did study Whitneys mannerisms and body language. She did her best and i think it did not look bad. I haven’t seen the movie. Whitney Houston was an anomaly. She broke the mold. Her well deserved status had several components at play. When I heard they were doing a biopic, my initial concern was whether I’d witness all of the components on screen without it feeling like a parody or cosplay.
For example, would I’d be convinced that they’d accurately capture Whitney’s stunning looks (absolutely gorgeous & modelesque from head to toe…those eyes, that smile….), multifaceted personality (confidence, wittiness, humor, mystique, elegance, charisma, kindness, hood/around the way girl/woman, etc), and mannerisms (mesmerizing stage presence). I wanted to see that “it” factor / global star quality Whitney possessed.
I also hoped we’d learn new details about her life. Such as her perspective on her music & work ethic that led to being the greatest singer of all time. Inside details that not only humanized her (what was she like aside from being an artist), but also gave us a greater glimpse of her genius as a vocalist…a premier vocalist…the VOICE.
AND - I was hoping we’d experience unheard versions of familiar music from the 80s and 90s (even later), or audio from performances or tracks previously unseen or unreleased. AND I wanted an answer to why 80s Whitney or early 90s Whitney didn’t record a Christmas album! 😤 (that always bothered me, lol.).
Nonetheless, IF I go see the biopic, the motivation will be hearing Whitney’s voice in the theater again (i.e The Bodyguard, The Whitney Doc, etc). Hearing her voice on that audio system is RIVETING.
Thanks for the review, bruh! 💪🏽

    • @THATGUYTALKSMOVIES

Yeah man, I was hoping for much more myself. And yes, one of the only things that made the theater viewing worthy was hearing Whitney's voice in the system. The chronology, timing of it all was OFF! As a HUGE Whitney fan knowing her career inside out. From hair, makeup wardrobe to certain LIVE performances were Mish moshed into wrong eras of Whitney's illustrious career. Examples when they showed Whitney recording How will I know video then jumped to first hearing Whitney singing you give good love on the radio...her recording Where do broken hearts go for the Debut album....Her IYBT wardrobe performing in My love is your love era...just a few instances that was completely confusing and extremely frustrating. Naomi didn't look like Whitney, but she did encapsulate her mannerisms, Whitney's demeanor. I agree the script was not fleshed out enough to really capture Whitney's essence. I was just glad to hear Whitneys voice blasting through the theatre speaker. The crowd I watched with was hyped when she performed the AMA performance at the end. It's the closest thing to a live Whitney experience I'll ever encounter and for that alone, I'd go see it again!

Thank you very much for this great review! I feel the urge to add two things. I was missing the love that Whitney was oozing, when watching the documentaries on her. Just look at the very last scene in ‚Can I be me‘ when she sits in a car, first she has her eyes closed then she opens them and gives us a smile. It was like saying, I love you all❤️
When I went to see the movie, I didn‘t know that Whitney was singing, and I was thinking, in the middle range Naomi sounded like Whitney, but those beautiful high notes didn‘t sound like her. Then I learned it was Whitney singing, so I went to see the movie once more. But still I had the feeling something was not right. I only learned yesterday that they were doing remixes. I was disappointed about that. Anyway, I am happy that we are reminded about Whitney’s amazing legacy, and being inspired to listen to her angelic voice 🎼🎙❤️

I always say that most of us saw Whitney's rise and fall in real time and we can see her most iconic performances, award show appearances, and interviews right on UA-cam. It's not like 1972 when Diana Ross played Billie Holiday and a lot of people didn't know a lot about Billie and you couldn't just look at UA-cam to see Billie, so a lot of people didn't know that Diana was so different from Billie. It's really time to stop it with the Whitney movies for a long, long time.

The movie reminded me how sad it was that everyone expected 40-something Whitney to be 20-something Whitney, rather than accept her new voice as the voice of a woman who had grown, and hurt, and changed over time, like the scars on a lion's face. It was still a beautiful voice but she was accused of ruining it, as though she had damaged a piece of public property.
Not even Whitney Houston could live up to Whitney Houston. Might she have lived without that pressure?
Overall, I liked the movie. It didn't venture to speculate on her inner turmoil, which after Blonde I actually appreciate. It simply told the story as it played out, non-judgmentally and with appropriate sensitivity.
As to whether it should have been in cinemas, hey, some of us are happy for a movie we can bring our mothers to.

I am 55 yrs old and was in my late teens when Whitney Houston came on the scene in 1985 (actually I knew her already since 1983 from duets she did with Teddy Pendergrass and Jermaine Jackson and TV spots she did on one of my favorite soap operas) I was and still am obsessed with her. To be fair Naomi Ackie is a pretty woman and got many of Whitney's mannerisms down when she mimed the live performances. However I am sorry - all I kept thinking was how much more stunning it would have been with a young woman who was as statuesque, slender, and willowy like the real Whitney was. Whitney was NOT a big ass, thick thighed girl. She was slender with long willowy arms and legs. A tiny waist and a beautiful apple shaped, curvy, yet slim ass. Look at her gorgeous slim, perky bottom in these tight pants in this video: ua-cam.com/video/SkdMFmBsHgE/v-deo.html And also that gorgeous face - she had delicate features, high cheekbones, oval shaped face, gorgeous mouth with pouty, full lips - not fat lips. Go watch "You Give Good Love" video to see that gorgeous face and mouth I am talking about!! ua-cam.com/video/dY7PmX6Oz58/v-deo.html I cannot help but be very partial to the real Whitney's true beauty because I was there when she first captured the world. You have to understand - Whitney Houston was a once in a lifetime or generation talent. Lots of beautiful women sing - but not like that - and a lot of the women that can sing DO NOT look like a supermodel. But Whitney was the jackpot - a gorgeous young woman who can blow the roof off with that angelic, clear, sweet as honey voice. That is why she was so magical - She did have it all. Sadly Naomi Ackie did not. But she tried her best.

I completely agree. And this is not at all an insult to Naomi because I think she is pretty. But Whitney was stunning. So I wish they would had went with some other black actress with stunning looks. And that is important because Whitney's looks was part of her appeal. Naomi, to me, looks so much like the singer Brandy that it's crazy. I can see her doing a Brandy biopic and hitting that role. As a matter of fact, when I first saw the trailer, I thought it was actually Brandy. The resemblance is uncanny.
Plus from the trailers, I didn't see that she really had the essence of Whitney. Her voice wasn't bad, but everything else about her I don't think there was much there.

I’d say that Naomi is beautiful in her own right. I think it is more about the script and details missing. She was given this script and had to work with it. I feel they could have added more details and nuances to the story and recreated more memorable memories of Whitney like an Arsenio appearance, her close friendship with BeBe & Cece, more details about the massive movies she was in.. her loving on newer generation artists like Brandy and Monica - which all speaks to her spirit and who SHE was versus just the highlights.

I wish they showed more of a breakdown with Whitney’s big awards and performances besides the AMA’s where she had to overcome something and control the crowd like @ Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Celebration (1988), A Benefit Concert for The United Negro College Fund (1988), That's What Friends Are For: AIDS Benefit Concert (1990), Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston (1991) and Classic Whitney: Live from Washington, D.C. (1997) Maybe showed her baptism in the other country showing more of her religious background. Kinda like in Selena. Why on earth would they cast Naomi to play Whitney? Her looks alone played a HUGE part of her startup being a model and the 1st brown girl to grace the cover of Seventeen. Was that even mentioned in the movie? Whitney was a sculpted tiny girl in the 80’s and early 90’s before she became plus size before she passed. I currently reside in Newark, NJ where Whitney is from and there are so many girls who look like her and can actually hold a note. Someone else could’ve captured the Whitney isms if that makes sense. Naomi wasn’t terrible but I wanted more. However, singing home did make me cry because Naomi did give Whitney especially singing over her vocals. I liked the movie but didn’t LOVE it.

Well, never seen it but to support a black film maker would be the only reason I would go see the movie but just off the appearance of the actress and I didn't really feel anything but I heard many things from viewers that it was a cash grab and what support that is the main character being a foreign actor which foreign actors are cheaper to higher so their better on the budget but if their a good actor/actress maybe they can ad some depth to who they portray and be a great money grab or Oscar contender so thought your review was very honest and keep doing what you do friend and be the best at what you do.

I’ve been a fan since the 80’s when I was a little girl, and I was around to see Whitney’s growth, and I feelthe movie was rushed and they just skimmed over random parts of her life. This was not what I was expecting, and why on Earth would they cast a British actress to play an American woman!? No wonder she couldn’t pull it off.
They should make a 25 season series of Whitney’s life where they cover every era of her life, that don’t only include all important milestone music and moments and interviews/ performances that we already know and have seen before, but show us something that we never knew before, more behind the scene moments as well. We didn’t learn anything new with this movie.
They need to actually cast someone who resembles her more (I mean I know it’s hard to find another who is as beautiful as her, but they never even come close). A woman who carries herself the same way Whitney did, who can capture Whitney’s essence and embody the true spirit, persona/personality, characteristics, mannerisms, speaking voice as her.
Whitney had more class and was more articulate than they portrayed her in this movie. Plus Naomi over-acted, at times it just seemed like a parody of Whitney. 🙄 And what I also noticed that Naomi’s legs were too thick wearing those leggings, Whitney was much thinner (in a good way). And the guy who played Bobby Brown looked like a stick figure compared to the real Bobby. The cast was all wrong. The only thing I liked about the movie was how they used Whitney’s real voice for the live performances. The only voice who came close to sounding like her was when they used the vocals of Debra Cox in the 2015 “ Whitney” movie that Angela Basset directed.

I would tend to agree with this review. I am a big fan of Whitney and would have liked to seen an actress who looked more like Whitney then Naomi and as was mentioned in this review, had to do with casting. I did like Tamara's and Stanley's performance. I would have liked them to go in to more depth with her drug use and marriage to Bobby. The movie was basically a highlight of her more well known hits/performances which you could watch on Netflix. Naomi's performance and the movie wasn't bad, but I would not say it was not great. I just was wanting to see a more of a in depth movie of Whitney's life instead of a highlight of some of her performances with fillers in between.

These immigrants came over to America and playing our talent sisters and brothers in the movies and messing up just like Whitney Houston bio, Harriet Tubman bio, Aretha Franklin bio played by Cynthia Enviro and the Black American producers and a directors in Hollywood had to do it over again and Fred Hampton. Don't forget Will Smith played in Movie Emancipation with an accent. The movie Emancipation was about a black American man named Peter who was an enslaved at Louisiana in 1863 and was whipped by Gordon. Black Americans didn't have an accent in 1800s, the African accent was gone. Slaves beginning in America 1776 until 1865. In 1863, black American men went to civil war and won 1863. That's when black Americans were freed only in Texas in 1863.
