This strikes at the heart of the matter. I don't have a problem with people that believe in a higher power that created everything and believe that we continue to exist in some form or another after death. But they need to recognize that the arguments they present for their belief are fallacious. Every single one of them is and always will be fallacious. You cannot make a claim, "There is a supernatural creator God", without providing evidence for your claim. And no, you can't use what is written in the Bible to claim that what is written in the Bible is true. If I ask "How do you know that what is written in the Bible is true?", you can't answer "Because it's written in the Bible that what's written is true". That's beyond childish.
@Temulon I completely agree. I am a Christian myself, and I won't sit there and tell someone - "There is a God!!" - because I don't have hard proof that there is any type of divine creator. Christianity is a *faith* based religion. That being said, when science contradicts what is in the Bible, I will obviously side with science on the matter because, to me, if the Christian God did create the universe, then they must have created science as well.

Complexity does not necessarily require a designer; it can also come from mindless natural processes. David Hume gives the examples of a snowflake, and of the generation of crystals. You can tell a lot about a person's attitudes by their choice of words. Defining what a "lesbian is, or is not, aside, saying "She ADMITTED...." carries a very different implication than "She STATED..."

Even though I believe in a God, my brother is worried I’m going to hell since I’m not a Christian. I have no problem with his beliefs,and I know he speaks from love. Actually, I don’t have a problem with most religions as long as they’re not used to promote hate. I don’t have a problem with atheists either and my own personal take is God doesn’t demand belief in It and God doesn’t judge us on whether we believe in It or not. What a narcissistic god that would be that demands worship. Seems a lot of religion, especially Christianity is based on an anthropomorphic idea of God. I can’t speak to others because I haven’t studied them that deeply, except perhaps Advaita Vedanta when I followed that guru. And that was definitely not an anthropomorphic understanding.

the “I love them but I hate their lifestyle” is something that I generally hear from people trying hold their anti-LGBTQ+ perspective while still maintaining a relationship with people in the community. It’s frustrating because they try to come across as tolerant and loving, but it doesn’t work.
When bigots say things akin to "I don't hate [LGBT/minorities/ect.]" then follow up with something that clearly expresses hate, what they mean can be summed up in two ways: "I don't hate gay people I hate it when gay people don't pretend to be straight people." and "I'm not racist I don't hate black people, I just hate it when they want to be considered equal to white people."
@@tims.2717 Not necessarily. I repeated the same talking points for decades, but it was all internalized self-hatred. I didn't know what being queer actually meant, having been raised from childhood to believe that it's inherently immoral (for no rational reason), and ALWAYS involves or leads to some sort of predatory abuse. Being a shy, sensitive, trans-girl egg, of course I didn't want to get abused and dehumanized in wild orgies, and that hostile caricature was the only representation of queer culture that I'd been exposed to. I also grew up in a town of 600 people, and went into the military (during "don't ask, don't tell") after high school, so was being actively propagandized and officially discouraged by my employer, the US government, from associating with queer people at all IRL, which could have helped expose my hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance. So, queer-phobic Christians definitely are lying to themselves. Their own doctrine teaches that every sin can be purified by Love, but they twist that into legalistic strictures (eg, telling kids to get married before having sex, instead of teaching them to value consent and natural human diversity of behavior and desire).
God creates Eve from Adams rib, which makes Eve genetically male, then got ticked off because Eve wouldn't stop smashing her sons to create the rest of human life on Earth ... i've been an atheist/agnostic almost 99% of my life, I'm 39, and I recently realised, following Christ was the best decision of my life. Yes, i have no scientific proves of existence of God, and I don't expect it, but what made become a follower of Christ is realisation that the world doesn't exist for nothing, and we, humans, the most sophisticated creation on this planet, and may be in whole universe, with abilities to observe and appreceate the complexity, beauty and ugliness of this world, also must have a big purpose, and without God nothing just makes no sense - in the eyes of atheists, humans are just a worthless drop of water in the ocean. become a stronger Christian, sister, not just official Christian, and your life will be filled with purpose. Atheism is the way to depression, purposelessness, and eventually hell. please ignore my faulty English.

I just don't feel rhe need to push my faith on to everyone else. If you want to know, ask. I will tell. But in deconstructing my faith, my relationship with God has grown stronger. But that doesn't mean I don't get a laugh out of life. And atheism DOES NOT lead to depression. I'm actually tired of Christians saying that lack of faith leads to mental illness or whatever. I know plenty of Christians who believe in God and have a strong faith and relationship but STILL have depression, anxiety, OCD, etc.

I deal with customers like that ALL the time at the independent bookstore I work at. And I've noticed something with very Christian very conservative almost always Trump supporting people: They have literally zero conception that the person they're speaking to....might not agree with them. They seem to have no sense of theory of mind; specifically minds not like their own. In their world, liberals and atheists are these scary characters in some far off land....but surely not the nice friendly person at their local bookstore. Why, THEY can't be liberal or non-religious....they seem intelligent and kind. Unfortunately, being on the clock....I tend to avoid revealing my true beliefs/worldview cuz....well, I like this job. Also it's almost more fun to let them think I'm one of them....cuz the THINGS THEY SAY to someone they think agrees with them. I mean....my god.

We are both critical of fundamentalist Christianity, seeing it as poorly informed among other things. Thus, fundamentalists get upset, but well-informed and progressive Christians aren't going to get offended.

This is sort of weirdly fascinating because I feel like most of the time, when men make a show of "debating" or "debunking" a woman who is very clearly making a joke, it's done in bad faith because all they really want to do is performatively act like women are nonsensical and stupid. This guy really seems to genuinely think he's adding important context and clarification to the discussion. The severity with which he talks about vampires not being real feels like he is really seriously worried about there being people who don't know that.
I'd argue with that. Sometimes people say really hateful things about (mostly) minorities and try to pass it off as harmless jokes. Examining who's the punchline, how and why can be very helpful and worthwhile and that's something i could see being called "debunking the comedy". Im not saying that's what is happening here, first of all (X) doubt, second of all i didnt watch the vid yet - but i think its something to keep in mind. One theory I’ve seen a lot of people talk about that I think seems very possible is that those who say sexuality is a choice are actually bisexuals with internalized homophobia. They think it’s a choice because they themselves chose not to act on their same sex attraction and only act on their opposite sex attraction and now they think all people can choose who they’re attracted to.
“Lifestyle” is a stupid-ass word anyway, in every context. I don’t have a “lifestyle,” I just have a life. Normal people of any gender or sexual orientation or whatever are just living their lives. “Lifestyles” are for rich or otherwise privileged people who are putting on a show for other people they want to impress, or want to distinguish themselves as better than.
And regarding 'lifestyles,' the one people like Mr fun police in the video propose is one where you're expected to live your life as a punishment for a legendary noncrime that happened so far back that you wouldn't have been so much as a glancing thought at the time. It's a miserable excuse of a life that you have to be groomed to think is any way to live, that or break a number of rules just so you have some sliver of joy in life. (Also a lifestyle that in part undermines the supposed reason for Christ's death)
I had to actually look this guy up. I couldn't resist. I'll respect the sentiment of not putting any channel names out there. With that said, this dude is a certified fruit and nut cake. He has a "Commenting on Comments" series, but since his videos have next to no comments, he instead comments on the comments left on other people's videos. I'm almost tempted to watch his actual video game content, if for no other reason than morbid curiosity. Unfortunately, and this is just my mean moment, he has a face for radio and a voice for silent films.

I had a joke for anti lesbian guys on forums. "Why are you so emotionally against lesbians? Did your wife ran away with a lesbian while you were in prison?" They usually don't know what to answer first. That their wife didn't ran away or that they never went to prison.

That's not actually true. Whether the Eucharist prayer literally physically changes the bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Christ as it's being consumed, or if it's just a symbol of his sacrifice, is something that has massively divided Christian theology for hundreds of years.

I wasn't truly loving God as a Conservative Evangelical, because I was hating so many of my neighbors, especially queer people (including myself!). But I wouldn't attempt to diagnose him or use his hypothetical autism to defend him, because if he were autistic, he seems to be sufficiently functional to understand how his behaviour might be uncomfortable for some people, once that's pointed out (which Emma did multiple times). I don't have a problem with people that believe in a higher power that created everything and believe that we continue to exist in some form or another after death. But they need to recognize that the arguments they present for their belief are fallacious. Every single one of them is and always will be fallacious. You cannot make a claim, "There is a supernatural creator God", without providing evidence for your claim. And no, you can't use what is written in the Bible to claim that what is written in the Bible is true.
If I ask "How do you know that what is written in the Bible is true?", you can't answer "Because it's written in the Bible that what's written is true". That's beyond childish.
@Temulon I completely agree. I am a Christian myself, and I won't sit there and tell someone - "There is a God!!" - because I don't have hard proof that there is any type of divine creator. Christianity is a *faith* based religion. That being said, when science contradicts what is in the Bible, I will obviously side with science on the matter because, to me, if the Christian God did create the universe, then they must have created science as well.

What a narcissistic god that would be that demands worship. Seems a lot of religion, especially Christianity is based on an anthropomorphic idea of God. I can’t speak to others because I haven’t studied them that deeply, except perhaps Advaita Vedanta when I followed that guru. And that was definitely not an anthropomorphic understanding.

the “I love them but I hate their lifestyle” is something that I generally hear from people trying hold their anti-LGBTQ+ perspective while still maintaining a relationship with people in the community. It’s frustrating because they try to come across as tolerant and loving, but it doesn’t work.
When bigots say things akin to "I don't hate [LGBT/minorities/ect.]" then follow up with something that clearly expresses hate, what they mean can be summed up in two ways:
"I don't hate gay people I hate it when gay people don't pretend to be straight people."
and
"I'm not racist I don't hate black people, I just hate it when they want to be considered equal to white people."
They are not tolerant or loving. They are lying to themselves and to others about how they really feel.

I didn't know what being queer actually meant, having been raised from childhood to believe that it's inherently immoral (for no rational reason), and ALWAYS involves or leads to some sort of predatory abuse. Being a shy, sensitive, trans-girl egg, of course I didn't want to get abused and dehumanized in wild orgies, and that hostile caricature was the only representation of queer culture that I'd been exposed to. I also grew up in a town of 600 people, and went into the military (during "don't ask, don't tell") after high school, so was being actively propagandized and officially discouraged by my employer, the US government, from associating with queer people at all IRL, which could have helped expose my hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance. So, queer-phobic Christians definitely are lying to themselves. Their own doctrine teaches that every sin can be purified by Love, but they twist that into legalistic strictures (eg, telling kids to get married before having sex, instead of teaching them to value consent and natural human diversity of behavior and desire).

i've been an atheist/agnostic almost 99% of my life, I'm 39, and I recently realised, following Christ was the best decision of my life. Yes, i have no scientific proves of existence of God, and I don't expect it, but what made become a follower of Christ is realisation that the world doesn't exist for nothing, and we, humans, the most sophisticated creation on this planet, and may be in whole universe, with abilities to observe and appreceate the complexity, beauty and ugliness of this world, also must have a big purpose, and without God nothing just makes no sense - in the eyes of atheists, humans are just a worthless drop of water in the ocean. become a stronger Christian, sister, not just official Christian, and your life will be filled with purpose. Atheism is the way to depression, purposelessness, and eventually hell. please ignore my faulty English.

But that doesn't mean I don't get a laugh out of life.
And atheism DOES NOT lead to depression. I'm actually tired of Christians saying that lack of faith leads to mental illness or whatever. I know plenty of Christians who believe in God and have a strong faith and relationship but STILL have depression, anxiety, OCD, etc.

I'm not a Christian, but I am an academic who teaches and writes about Christianity. Emma, I've enjoyed your content for some time now. I think you and I get pushback for similar reasons, at times. We are both critical of fundamentalist Christianity, seeing it as poorly informed among other things. Thus, fundamentalists get upset, but well-informed and progressive Christians aren't going to get offended.

I'd argue with that. Sometimes people say really hateful things about (mostly) minorities and try to pass it off as harmless jokes. Examining who's the punchline, how and why can be very helpful and worthwhile and that's something i could see being called "debunking the comedy". When I hear people say homosexuality is a choice, I always respond, “Oh, so you could choose to be gay today and be perfectly happy with that decision.”
One theory I’ve seen a lot of people talk about that I think seems very possible is that those who say sexuality is a choice are actually bisexuals with internalized homophobia. They think it’s a choice because they themselves chose not to act on their same sex attraction and only act on their opposite sex attraction and now they think all people can choose who they’re attracted to.
“Lifestyle” is a stupid-ass word anyway, in every context. I don’t have a “lifestyle,” I just have a life. Normal people of any gender or sexual orientation or whatever are just living their lives. “Lifestyles” are for rich or otherwise privileged people who are putting on a show for other people they want to impress, or want to distinguish themselves as better than.
And regarding 'lifestyles,' the one people like Mr fun police in the video propose is one where you're expected to live your life as a punishment for a legendary noncrime that happened so far back that you wouldn't have been so much as a glancing thought at the time. It's a miserable excuse of a life that you have to be groomed to think is any way to live, that or break a number of rules just so you have some sliver of joy in life. (Also a lifestyle that in part undermines the supposed reason for Christ's death)

That's not actually true. Whether the Eucharist prayer literally physically changes the bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Christ as it's being consumed, or if it's just a symbol of his sacrifice, is something that has massively divided Christian theology for hundreds of years.

Yeah, sure, he's an asshole, but I think autism and being raised in an extremist Christian community have given rise to the man that he is today. I just think autistic people are particularly susceptible to extremist beliefs and it makes me really sad. Also thankful that I, as an autistic person, didn't end up like him, considering I had a more flexible mindset and decent parenting and belief systems growing up.

But I wouldn't attempt to diagnose him or use his hypothetical autism to defend him, because if he were autistic, he seems to be sufficiently functional to understand how his behaviour might be uncomfortable for some people, once that's pointed out (which Emma did multiple times). Maybe he needs it explained to him in person, so he can ask questions, but in the end he should be able to understand it.
