This is one of my favorite speedruns. It's actually a little risky to level up your health, since the health of all the bosses will level up with you, which makes the fights go on a lot longer.
@@BigOleWords Having more health does make the boss fights drag a bit, but you can still do way more damage to them than they can to you. The Fire and Whirlwind attacks actually do pretty decent damage against most bosses. And none of the bosses (other than the final boss) will reach maximum health.
John Carmack (OG Doom) famously said that story in video games is like story in p*rn.... irrelevant. I am inclined to agree. Gameplay is the most important category to judge a game on. More important than story, graphics, realism or any other category you can come up with. Like, ask one of your friends who loved The Last of Us, or some other game with "great story" if they played the game twice. Then ask anyone if they played SMB3 more than once. Super Mario Bros, great game, dogshit story. The question you have to ask yourself is "am I having fun?" Literally the only thing that matters. This game looks like fun. This channel is fun. That's why I keep coming back.
It’s true. I randomly installed Quake the other day, as I was bored scrolling through Steam. Man, once I started it up, I remembered every secret and how to avoid certain traps. Story didn’t matter. It was time to kill demons!
I think of Whomp Em as being more like Duck Tales than Mega Man because of the pogo stick mechanic. I think it works way better than stabbing your enemies just like Duck Tales. DT and MM are both Capcom so makes sense. Whomp Em is a really fun game! And I LOVE your videos, keep up the good work
If I had this back when I had my original NES this would of been my most played game. I can't remember all the games I had back then it was quite a few, but I'd have to sit down and really do some thinkin. Although some weren't actually mine, well almost all were. My house was like the hub if you would. My lil brother and 2 sisters had a few games and my friends would bring them over and leave some too. That's how I've experienced most of the games for the NES. Thanks for the videos James. Keep em rollin
I have the Famicom version. It comes in a big cart (big for a famicom game). Believe it or not they did bother to change the bear enemy from a panda for the localisation.
I remember playing this game as a kid. My mom came home from the store one day with two NES cartridges; she’d purchased Whomp ‘Em and Shatterhand. We had never heard of these games before, but they quickly became our favorites to play. So I have fond memories of this game. And I think Shatterhand counts as another obscure NES game, so that one is worth checking out as well.
I was so impressed when I saw shatterhands parallax scrolling backgrounds. I got it after other people were playing super NES lol. Never did beat it though.
A lot of localisations in this era can come off looking like those rom hacks you get on Chinese handhelds (you know the ones, the kind that file the serial numbers off Mario but it's still clearly Mario, or put Pikachu into Adventure Island), but Whomp 'Em seems visually okay. I mean, aside from the Chinese inspiration in many of the bosses and locations. It does puzzle me, though, why they thought they needed to adapt it. The Japanese TV series Saiyuki had been dubbed in '79 as "Monkey", and, at least in Australia, was a regular staple on the ABC in reruns into the 2000s. Even if the average Australian didn't know what a "Sun Wukong" or a "Saiyuki" was, we'd recognise Monkey and his companions on their westward journey. Did Monkey just never take off in the US or something? Either way, Sun Wukong has made a different kind of journey to the west in so many different forms, surely there's a cultural touchstone for Americans besides Dragon Ball that they'd have recognised Sun Wukong by in 1991. Note: As a speaker of both Japanese and Mandarin, it _did_ hurt just a little to say the Chinese "Sun Wukong" and the Japanese "Saiyuki" in the same sentence. Sun Wukong in Japanese is, of course, Son Gokuu, while Saiyuki in Mandarin is Xiyouji.
@@BigOleWords I think most of the value in watching it today is in how naff it is. Dubbing that doesn't match well with the lips, or has awkward phrasing to do so, with broad fake accents to match the overacted motions, fights choreographed such that you can practically see the actors counting the beats. It's a fun watch, but don't go expecting a great deal of literary accuracy beyond the basic story beats. The theme song is, as the kids say, an absolute banger, though.
Well the Sacred Woods an Secret Cliffs were supposed to represent Wood and Metal which were separate elements in Chinese Alchemy. Didn't translate well I guess.
Yeah, the six stages in the Japanese version were based on Wood, Fire, Metal, Water, Decay, and Darkness. Darkness became "Ice" in the US for some reason, even though only the Water stage has actual ice in it (other than the final stage, which is Heaven).
Having to replay the final level over and over again each time you die is what keeps this game from being very good. It's a long gimmicky level and the music gets on your nerves. However this is still a fun game that I play every now and then.
Yeah, the last level is definitely the worst. I do like how it requires you to use most of the abilities, though. It'd be greatly improved if it had checkpoints, and some actual music.
