      Thinkers Forum???
      Thinker, are you serious?
Do you even know what think means?
John Mearsheimer: If I Were in Beijing, US Would Already Be Kicked Out of Asia
Does John Mearsheimer know that this title means that he knows that China is different from himself and the West, thinks differently, and acts differently?
Simply put, does John Mearsheimer know that John Mearsheimer doesn't know China?
Oh, my DOG, can John Mearsheimer read English?
Johnny boy, just in case that you care to know why China hasn't kicked the US out of Asia. The only answer is that it would be easier for the Chinese to slaughter, cook, and eat the Americans in Asia.

John is talking nonsense...why should China behave the same as the Americans in the imperialistic sense?
We know from history, Americans practiced slavery and conducted genocide on the Native Indians whereas China never got involved in such misdeeds! By building Great Wall to protect itself, China had no barbaric behavior in expanding itself outward!!!

I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with us for two thousand years, but never once China invaded us or colonized us. When China wanted something they traded with us. In 1511, the Portuguese came, in 1642 the Dutch came, in 1786 the British came, we were colonized by each, one after another.
We often hear the West say: “Once China becomes the biggest power in the world, we would be colonized or imperialized, our resources looted, our treasures raided, we have to follow what they say, because we did those things when we were powerful, so they would do the same”.
The fact is, China was as poor as India in 1980s. Since 1990, it has started to grow and turned to a superpower today, without dropping a single bomb in a foreign country. Never before in history of mankind, from the Athenian, to the Roman Empire, to the Mongolian Empire, to the Ottoman Empire, to the British Empire, to Nazi German and Imperial Japan, to the American Empire, has a superpower risen without any bloodshed, wars, slavery & colonization of other countries.
This is a REAL civilization, and this is something that Western leaders and scholars will never understand.

When US was like China today, it already declared on Spain and overtaking territories like Puerto Rico, Philippines, etc as colonies. And also the brutality and oppression used to suppression the rebellions or opposition to its hegemony. Too bad, China still hasn't done anything similar but promotes Win-Win cooperations and trades. Perhaps that's why US accused China for not being Like-Minded as expected. In fact, that couldn't be more true.
China may be assertive today but certainly not aggressive as many western media wish to depict through misinformation, slandering and disseminating alternate facts as the realty nowadays.

China has no military bases around the world and they don't intend to do what the US has done ie. having 800 ++ military bases around planet earth and using hegemonic tactics to grow the economic and politic interest.
In fact China has shown the US you can grow your economic and progress a country towards modernization by just doing trading with good innovation WITHOUT USING HEGEMONIC or MILITARIES BASES AROUND THE WORLD !

While Mearsheimer is much more astute that the average Western analyst/thinker, he still makes the same fundamental mistake by viewing China from the perspective of America and assuming that what the US wants is what China wants. On this, Martin Jacques has the better take: to understand China, you need to view China from its own perspective.
Mearsheimer himself states that if he were in China's position, he would already have kicked the US out of Asia. But China didn't do this, not yet at least. Does Mearsheimer not wonder why? This fact alone is enough to make one wonder that perhaps China is different from the US, and it is strange that Mearsheimer didn't catch on to it.

Just think of current US threats: China needs to be able to defend itself and to deter potential enemies, even without attacking or colonizing anybody. I'd like to remind what happened last time China was weak, in the 1930's. Power politics is an unfortunate reality.

While I do agree with John on many things, I disagree with his view on China. The problem is that he based on his review of China when it becomes a superpower as if China will do the same thing as US does. He is completely wrong. The 5000 years of Chinese civilization and modern history of China has already proven China is nothing like the US. The rise of China in the last 40 year shows a Country can become a world super power without bloodshed. John's analogy of what China will do is faulty and that is the precise problem with the US government. All the actions taken by the US is causing China to react economically and militarily.

RichardDWolff said it himself, during his formation he went through 3 ivy league universities and not a single one had literate professors on Marxist economics. It was extirpated during mcartianism, (the professors were afraid of being fired and did not talk about the subject.) This led to an "cleaned" academy where "liberal economics" were rebranded as "economics". Today they do not understand Marxist economics and fight strawman versions of it.
I imagine they did this on other areas or at least worked their bias heavily in their teachings, history might be another field affected...

U.S. attempt to maintain its hegemony will be the cause of its downfall. Trying to maintain hundreds of military bases abroad is sapping its economic resources. It's military failure in Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, and its proxy war in Ukraine has shown its weakness. It is already highly indebted (33.5T) and can no longer pay it debt. It has been de-industrialized. And so, other countries are abandoning the U.S. dollar as a reserve and trade currency. Mearsheimer is wrong on several points here.
    1. It isn't just China that wants to see Russia prevail in the Ukraine war. The Global-Majority countries, around 140 countries, would like to see Russia win the war, and enforce Ukraine neutrality. The reason is fairly straightforward, and Mearsheimer himself knows this and has said so many times; Russia is a nuclear power, and sees NATO-encroachment, especially into Ukraine as an existential issue. As such, a Russian defeat (even a partial defeat) that ends with NATO membership for Ukraine would mean the use of tactical nuclear weapons. This is something most sane countries in the World would NOT want to see. Only some members in the US Administration/think-tanks (mostly the Neo-cons) and some deranged people in the Baltics, Poland, the UK and of course the neo-Nazis in Ukraine would push that far. So Mearsheimer is economical with the truth on this.
    2. That China wants to change the status-quo and the US wants/Likes to maintain the Status-quo. The actions of the US completely destroy Mearsheimer's point here.
The US has taken a wide range of military actions in Asia, with AUKUS, the QUAD, floating the notion of NATO-in-Asia through its Japanese vassal and Stoltenberg. These are all designed to exert military pressure on China, and strengthening the 1st and 2nd Island chains to contain China. This is anything but maintaining the Status-quo. China's response is as expected. A stengthening of its naval and air-power in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The Chinese have long understood, its maritime routes are easily susceptible to blockade by the US. This is a stranglehold over Chinese trade and the flow of raw-materials, energy and goods to-and-fro China. Any nation, if capable, will not allow this to persist. Hence Chinese military buildup, including construction of outposts in the SCS. The US has since ratcheted-up further by signing military agreements with the Philippines and moved medium-range Typhon missiles there. This is a familiar US tactic, basing medium-range missiles in Turkiye, Romania during the Cold-war. It is a provocation. Status-quo? Mearsheimer is again economical with the truth. The reality simply doesn't support his argument.
Also, he mentioned Pelosi's visit. A sitting Majority-Leader of Congress visiting Taiwan is blatant provocation and gives encouragement to separatists on the Island. It should also be noted that China eroding the Taiwan airspace is AFTER Pelosi's visit. Prior to that, China has tacitly respected the mid-line in the Taiwan Strait and not (or rarely) have its military vessels cross that mid-line. The US destroyed that equilibrium.
    3. The US will come to military aid of Taiwan, should China militarily reclaim the Island. This is a selective reading of US intentions. The Ukraine situation provides the clearest indication of US willingness to engage directly in a war with a peer-great-power. Again, Mearsheimer is very aware of this, but chooses to vary his prognosis on the Taiwan case viz-a-viz UKraine. For the record, the US has poured $160billion into Ukraine, mostly in arms. The US has been training Ukrainian troops since before 2014. The CIA has been operating in Ukraine (a dozen bases there) for 15 years of more. It has encouraged European NATO allies to send 'mercenaries' to supporting Ukraine. It provides full ISR support for Ukraine to strike at Russia and Russian troops movements. BUT, the US has not intervened itself in Ukraine. One can expect the same playbook should a crisis arise in Taiwan. Note that it is far more difficult for the US to resource and supply a military intervention in Taiwan via the sea than to do something militarily in Ukraine. Anyone with some military understanding knows this. Mearsheimer chooses to ignore this aspect, and makes an uncharacteristically outlandish assessment of American intervention in Taiwan. Lastly, one other indicator on this is the US forcing Taiwan's key semiconductor firm TSMC to relocate its state-of-the art manufacturing plant in Arizona. This is a pre-emptive move to effectively 'make Taiwan less important to chip supply'. One can see the positioning here, reduce dependency on Taiwanese tech, and reduce the pressure (economic) of US need to intervene should China move on Taiwan. So many dimensions, Mearsheimer provides a lop-sided perspective.
I think it is a 'salami-slicing' piecemeal reading that Mearsheimer did here. Surprising for an academic of his experience and stature. China's security concerned are actually quite transparent. The safety of its trade-routes and sea-lanes is critical. It's military strengthening to ensure that is understandable, and I think Mearsheimer, as an expert in great-power politics, knows very well. His selective reading of the situation in Asia is narrow and informed by his knowledge of great-power politics in the Western World over the last 150 years, from British, French, German, Soviet and the US Empires. He has insufficient understanding of how China perceives its role in the World.

Spratly islands were already a contentious source of dispute between all asean and chinese claimants pre 2014 (since the 90s at least, but was not a "hot" dispute involving military assets but under numerious dialogues). I would have to strongly disagree with Mearsheimer on this one, his knowledge of Chinese culture and history is very limited. The Chinese for all their faults, aren't stupid enough to create an OVERSEAS empire. They have had many opportunities in their history to do so and they have never pursued it. Throughout Chinese history China will fight their land neighbors every now and then, but most of these fights are only within their own territory or represents a direct threat to their land borders.
China is the only civilization in human history to achieve Superpower status more than once. In fact, China has achieved it 7 times in 3,000 years: The Qin Dynasty, Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty. Throughout all these dynasties they were unmatched in military and economic strength. They NEVER pursued an overseas empire. They certainly had the economic, military, and naval strength to do so, but they never did. At worst, foreign countries would have to pay tribute to the Chinese dynasties for trade rights in China.
I'll give an example of how the Chinese think about overseas empires: During the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He (A famous Chinese Muslim Admiral) was given the largest fleet of Wooden Warships in history. He sailed around the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, Made contacts all over southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and Africa. His fleet had overwhelming military and naval power unmatched by anyone during this time. But he NEVER invaded another country or used it to bully other countries. He just went around to establish diplomatic and trade relationships with all these different countries. The only violence he committed was having to fight the many pirates that raided merchant ships in these oceans. After Admiral Zheng died at the age of 64, the Chinese emperor decided to burn the entire Chinese naval fleet to focus on domestic matters. Never in this entire history did China ever think about enslaving or colonizing the much weaker countries they made contact with.
The Chinese realize a simple truth that Westerners don't have the intellectual capacity to understand: If you invade a country of people who are different than you, they will fight you endlessly for generations until you either have to give up, or go broke. The only reason it ever worked in the New World is because European diseases destroyed 90% of the population before Europeans conquerors arrived. The Chinese well understand that they will not have such luck.

Mr. Mearsheimer's perspective is primarily rooted in a traditional realist approach, typical of Cold War-era thinking, which prioritizes power dynamics and state-centric strategies over nuanced considerations of human culture and societal complexities. This narrow focus constrains his analysis, limiting his ability to fully grasp the depth and diversity of contemporary global issues that require a broader understanding of cultural, social, and historical contexts. As a result, his insights, while strategic, often lack the multidimensional perspective necessary to address the complexities of today's interconnected world.
