LYRICS
I hear the baying of the hounds
In the distance, I hear them devouring
Pest-ridden jackals of the earth
Diabolical beasts and roaming the forests
In wait and constant protectors
Calling you to sit by his side
Your self-loathing image in his flesh
A revelation upon which you linger
His words are flies
Swarming towards the true insects
Feasting on buried dreams
Spreading decay upon your skin
His eyes spew forth a darkness
That cut through and paralyze
Casts light upon your secrets
Forced to confront your enemies
His mouth is a vortex
Sucking you into it's pandemonium
Fools you with a helping hand of ashes
Reached out in false dismay
His body is a country
The cities lay dead beyond despair
Friends turned enemies unable to come clean
In a rising fog of reeking death
Everything you believed is a lie
Everyone you loved is a death-burden
So you take comfort in him
And you are receptive to stark wishes
No longer struggling to declare your stand
You would inflict no harm to others
They are unaware and in a loop of futile events
You are everything, they are nothing
Drown in the deep mire
Past desires
Beneath the mire
Drown desire now with you
Drown in the deep mire
Past desires
Beneath the mire
Drown desire now with you
Lined up verses on dead skin
The tainted lips of a stranger
Resting upon hers
And I embrace bereavement
Everything beloved is shattered anyway
I would devote myself to anyone
I would accept any flaws
I am too weak to resist
Tension vibrating with horror
Finding the outcast in my eyes
Pushing nerves on a puppet
Endless poison in my veins
Clean intent now tainted with death
And so, cold touch now inhumane
Every waking hour awaiting a reverie to unfold
And now they are calling me
Louder by the minute
The baying of the hounds
Calling me back to my home
0:26 BEST MADE TACOS OF THE EARTH...... DIABOLICAL BEANS!
Mari Pellegrino ;)
I... love you?
Mari Pellegrino I know right , it's so bad ass. This will crack me up until the end of time.
Mari Pellegrino I know right , it's so bad ass. This will crack me up until the end of time.
Best made tacos of the earth... this and "There's a bathroom on the right" by CCR, are the funniest mis-heard lyrics ever.
Nothing beats some good old baying of the hounds before bedtime.
Yes lol
I dare to challenge you by stating that baying of the hounds right after waking up is better
11:28pm here
serendipity (i just spontaneously decided to give this, and just this, a listen before sleeping)
During*
You know a song is good when every second comment refers to a specific part of the song and states it to be the epitome of a feeling.
Hell yeah, man!
5:24 I can't get enough of it, it's overwhelming.
9:50 mate
Fuck yea. That’s what it’s all about.
I was going to play videogames before going to bed, but nooooo. I just had to groove to Opeth for two hours.
i know that feel, bro
Literally this
mcgibs how's that one opeth song xD
mcgibs Literally doing this rn
So, about three or four songs?
How to listen to an Opeth song: 1 listen to it, 2 read every single comment that says "minute X is the best", 3 listen to the song over and over again for 1 hour
XDDDDDDDDDD
cringe
1 hour X infinity
When you can call growling beautiful
2:05 "Everything you believed is a lie. Everyone you loved, is a dead bird."
+Vorcov 0:26 "best made tacos on the earth"
+Guitarmatt89 holy fuck I'm dying
+Vorcov Bird, or burden? Can't be sure
Definitely burden. One of Akerfeldt's favorite words.
Gatitasecsii
That's what I thought too
this is like 5 good songs combined
jason petroze poser, this is half a song
Dr. Breadsticks lol yeah, black rose immortal is one good 20 min song literally
Dr. Breadsticks yeah lol deadass 😂
That's the most basic of Opeth song formats, usually more like 7-10 songs😂😂😂 Still a masterpiece, Opeth is another plane of musical existence
You mean 5 excellent songs combined to an all-round masterpiece?
3:15 - 5:25 is one of their career-defining moments imho.
The best part of the song.
What do you mean career-defining?
The solo.
My face.
This is arguably one of the best songs Opeth ever did. Actually, scratch that. This IS one of the best songs Opeth ever did - and that's saying something, because Opeth does not put out merely average or bad music
Definitely one of my favorites, along with with Harlequin Forest and the Drapery Falls and maybe a few others (weasel wording in case I forgot something. Eternal Rains is pretty great.)
Ghost Reveries is a truly underappreciated album. Also I think I just made that word up.
I agree, I always come back to this song
Totally agree!
Sorry, i have a real hard time distinguishing one of Opeth's very best song's from another, cuz they are ALL 11+ on a scale of 1-10
Every song on every album has such incredible musical depth and style. There are not alot of bands that you can play 2 different songs from & not know it's the same band.Such is the diversity of Opeth, from the heaviest darkest metal with cookie monster vocals to soft jazz, & then classical piano concerto & then blues, & acoustic guitar with soaring harmonies, all in the same song!
00:00 - 10:41 is my favorite part
10:41 There’s nothing there.
Amen
Why is Opeth so fucking good?
The guys in the band are hugely underrated legends in their own right
Best band on the planet as it stands
Opeth is just a name Satan has used audibly lol so fucking good
Swedes
One word: variety
3:25 to 5:20 is my favourite Opeth moment in all their discography. They sure have many genius, emotional and technical parts, but this one always gets to me. With the concept of the album in mind, it inspires entering the depth of individual darkness, merging with fear, deep regret.. The point of no return.
DROOOOOOOOOOOWN IN THE
Last idk as say 5 mos now.. totally going down the rabbit hole w this band.. love comments like this bro..
I agree
Excellent description dude!
Beneeeeath the' miiire
i feel like this song is the culmination of Opeth's 'Steven Wilson' era, i.e. the styles on Damnation and Deliverance. the heaviness and the soft parts are in full effect and not a second is wasted. every other moment i find myself in awe at what one group of guys playing music can achieve. one of their most perfect songs for me
Ricardo Clemente When Opeth started working work Steve Wilson, their style started getting softer.
The balance has become perfect
From Hearst to Watershed before & after & then fuckn fry everyone LIVE@ Lick a sheet of LSD NOT!!!
YYYEEAAAAAAHHHHH!
shhhhhhit DON'T...
....DO IT...
For me, every album is just what it should be.
Ghost Reveries means a lot for me tho, and i find it to be Opeth's masterpiece. But i don't think we should actually compare Opeth eras because in a way, all the albuns are above average.
They may got softer but I believe that they got darker since their first collaboration with Steven
@@comradefreedom8275 Deliverance and Ghost Reveries contain some of their heaviest parts though.
5.25 minute of ecstasy starts. 5.53 chills, you fall on your knees and cry 6.06 climax of the song, you feel you're dissolving into the universe.
+Jared Dowty opeth embodies structure.
CALLING ME BACK TO MY
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMEUH.
Martin Lopez was by far their best drummer, and in my opinion one of the best drummmers I've ever heard
Axe is incredible, but I agree. Lopez elevated the band and allowed Mikael to explore all his musical inclinations
@@88omair axe fits their prog era really well thoughh
He can fill a fkin hole, that's for sure. not an easy thing with songs this dynamic.
LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH THEIR NEW KID.. SEEMS REALLY TALENTED
Martin Lopez brought a kind of latin sound to some parts which is interesting I definitely felt expanded the band but Axeneot has a lot of orog influences so he fits the current incarnation of Opeth.
BLOOD FLOWER CURSE;
BINDING OF IMMORTAL SOULS
You are everything... they are nothing..
I literally read this as it happened in the song
@@PatrickMullenDrums I literally read your comment as I was reading your comment
Best advice ever!
@@PatrickMullenDrumssame lmfao!😝🤣
Those were the times when Opeth ruled the world
Ege And they still do

@@antetomic11 are you ok
@@sawyernas4782 dont worry, he is just enjoying with some opeth tracks.
5:24 my favorite part, like going down a hill :D
I know this comment is three years past, but I was looking for this exact moment to show a friend. Thanks!
It's so brutal and beautiful at the same time. If memory serves, it reminds me of the ”chorus” part of a song by Cranes I haven't heard for like 20 years, Adrift.
Yeah, mine too. But for me, is like being chased by a pack of wolves. Same chill through the spine.
The whole song is awesome, but the part from 2:15 to 2:49... first the transition, the harmonies, beautiful layered vocals, how the guitar closes the part... and this "tragic" atmosphere, as I would call it... just wow!! Leaves me speechless
Love that groove!
@@jimmckenna707
:)
nice pfp mate
The section starting at 9:42 is amazing. It's surprisingly uplifting for an Opeth song.
thats why I love this band, they just pull out these unexpected parts, fits well and gives a nice dynamic
It's a GREAT chord progression man. Classic Opeth sound.
It kinda reminds me of Octane Twisted by Porcupine Tree
My favorite theme of the song. Wish It was expanded further.
I agree, also started thinking of Porcupine tree or something
5:25 - pure genius
The riff on 1:50 does things to me
That uplifting section buried right near the end gets me every time...
one of those parts that when i first heard it my eyes just went wide and my jaw dropped, like "how much better does this band get, goddamn"
Is it me or this is a beautiful song.....
5:25 got me through quarantine.
It's not over yet friend..
cherryness14 it's so damn beautiful. That's how you do modulation in a riff
@@__somnii i know no one talks about one of my favourite sequences especially with the growling. imagine if they did a orchestral version of this. unimaginablely beautiful
People making “diabolical beans” jokes over and over again for this song is gonna be one of my 13 reasons why
The groove on this song is so fucking sick, and the organ part adds just the perfect tinge of 60s psychedelia.

Martin Lopez's brilliance is so significant to what gives this song its beauty and power. What a beautiful man behind the kit.
True... Ghost reveries and deliverance are masterpieces that depict the diversity of Martin Lopez as a drummer... His playing is phenomenal... it's something you almost crave like nicotine.
@@kapildwivedi826 yes absolutely. And to think that he was also the drummer for the Damnation album. Such versatility gosh.
I killed six billion demons to this song!
Badass I can relate
If I could only choose 5 Opeth songs I was allowed to listen to from now on, this would have to be one of them, easily my favorite off of Ghost Reveries! Literally every minute of this song defines Opeth in their songwriting prime to me.
Totally agree. This and Ghost of Perdition are my top 2!
very good way to put it; this song is Opeth in their prime for sure
agreed
Aleks Ulmer ghost of perdition is cool I just get sick of the "aaahhhhhaaaahhhhhhhhhhheeeeyyaaaheeeyyaaahhh" section
@Andrew Funeral Portrait is the weirdest pick. Easily the worst song on Blackwater Park
It's amazing how he can growl and deliver the lyrics at the same time!!
Especially for like legit 10 mins at a time for a whole album
DecrepitOrigin888 They mean that you can make out the lyrics as Mikael growls.
Rielle L. This is one of the main reasons I don't usually like growling lyrics and death metal in general. Mikael does it so well that even on a first listen the lyrics are audibly present and understandable. Something most singers lack the ability to do it seems.
The whole album is such an untouchable achievement. Pure artistic perfection.
The synths at 5:54, together with the rest of the band of course, kill me.
Beneath the mire drown desire now with you...
9:43 Man that part is so catchy!
3:18 Moon Above Sun Below starts.
And people have the audacity to say that album doesn't sound like a mid 2000s Opeth album..........
LINED UP VERSES ON DEAD SKIN, THE TAINTED LIPS OF A STRANGER RESTING UPON HERS. Those lyrics, followed by that riff ... is the most evil and sinister sounding part of any song I've ever heard IMO.
1:50 Literally can't help but turn it up. My hand involuntarily moves towards the volume every time
I hear the baying of the houndssssssssssssssss...
The organ completes this song
9:42 Åkerfeldt rises on stage with a platform that has a small one-man
pirate boat on it, puts a pirate hat and an eye patch on, takes a fake
sword and and starts swinging, the boat starts
to swing at 9:58, and there's explosion/fire special effects and Åkerfeldt starts to march with the sword in hand sideways to the crowd, with the boat and blue cardboard waves swinging to the rhythm
Once you've read that comment, you cannot unsee the scene unfolding In your head everytime you play the song. Just when you tought it could not be better :O !
The misadventures of Akerfeldt.
I'd go see that movie
This comment wins.
I'll have whatever you're having 😄
Ps. What would Mikael's pirate name be? Grimbeard? 🤣
"PINCH THE NOSE OF A PUPPET!!" 9:34
Childhood memories
10:06 jesus christ mendez, don't do it to em. they have families! oh he did it
My fav comment... also underrated.
The section starting at 3:58 has to be one of the best in music.
+Eli Vega Agreed.
Eli Vega yup 100percent agree
absolutely
Me too.
The doggo from l'enfant sauvage video is so cute
3:57 Drown in the deep fryer...
That fckng ending is simply orgasmic. My favourite Opeth song, which alone deserves Ghost Reveries. So, I don't have to tell nothing if we add Ghost of Perdition, Atonement, Harlequin Forest or The Grand Conjuration... We get, for me, one of the best records of the century
I used to do my homework listening to this song
6:20 is just too good
7:28 says it all...
True
that sudden bliss.. shit..
This song is quite Psychedelic
Ads on this should be illegal
2:34-2:56 because of when i first really got pulled into this song, i was in tears right there
Joshy Bear Me too, man!
Ghost Reveries to me is Opeths best album.
This song is just incredible, the keyboards make this band complete
This is easily my favourite song ever.
Michael Akerfeldt is an Angel. Angels feel pure love.
One of the Best Rock Band in human history!
This band is so damn good
The sound in the beginning with the organ reminds me of Deep Purple. But so. much. heavier.
It is eargasmic. This is Per's masterpiece. His best performance on anything ever
This song is an absolute masterpiece. Feel privileged to have seen them live for this tour
This is my favorite Opeth song, and is a serious contender for my favorite song period.
Wait, you mean to say that your favourite song of all time is not an Opeth song?
This is a masterpiece! :D
Or this is a frequent last name in Sweden? :D
DecrepitOrigin888 not at all, I just love him and I thought it was a good "nickname" :$ hahahaha
Thanks :D
105%
9:05 Fuckin' wew, lads.
extremely high energy
*Airhorn* We have the best riffs dont we, folks?!
Easily my favorite part
BLOOD FLOWER CURSE, BINDING OF IMMORTAL SOULS.
Seriously, al fellow metalheads, check out Kill Six Billion Demons, the webcomic. You'll dig it.
I love the groovy guitar riff. It actually makes you dance
Which one the whole song has like 10 groovy riffs
damn what a bassline 8:35
Fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is one of my favorite Opeth songs.
0:26 "BEST MADE TACOS OF THE EARTH! DIABOLICAL BEANS!"
YES!
You sir deserve a medal \m/

MasterCyconide Atleast you made me laugh dude, don't worry ! xD
desperate jackals of the earth , diabolical beasts. yeah sounds just like it u peanut.
07:28 - 07:59 :X This band is inhumanely good
That end of solo transition is just so ridiculously clean
5:20 is one of my favourite opeth riffs
so good
The first riff reminds me of driving an old car down a dirt road in the countryside at night
Let us all take a moment and appreciate the bassline at 10:05.
one of the best songs written in modern history. takes you on a journey, so many different types of music all in one!
Most badass intro ever
8:30 on, that keyboard and the growls hit perfectly.
Totally missed Martin Lopez.
Axe is a genius but Lopez is full of passion ... .
+Jared Dowty naw Axe is amazing no doubt but Lopez is technically better. listen to his stuff in soen its sick
+Todd Daniel I disagree. Lopez is all about groove and feel. He can put a 4/4 beat into a groovy one. Axe is more of a machine playing. Precise and relentless, but lacks the feel Lopez has. Though he improved a lot, and is less of a machine, and more of a human playing.
Alexandre Batalha i agree
+Mani Shei This is pretty much the same thing as with Dream Theater; old one is groovy, new one is a technical god. However you can't expect a new drummer to just hop into a band and the band to sound the same as before... it's more than "just" the playing style and technical abilities, the band chemistry has to change, and it's always easier to say that the old one was better - of course it's better in That situation since that they've played together for a long, long time.
Axenrot's playing prowess is deceiving, just as with Mangini: if you know exactly what you are doing, you will sound more like a machine than a human.
Alexandre Batalha yeah I love how Martin can turn that simple 4/4 beat into an awesome Latin sounding groove. Does wonders for Mike's riffs.
Damn fucking good song! brutal and beautiful.
this album is epitome of progressive metal .. one of the best albums ever made ...
The dim light she comes peering
Through the forest pines
And she knows by the sound of the baying,
By the baying of the hounds
Diana Diana kick your feet up
Lust bares his teeth and whines
For he's picked up the scent of virtue
And he knows the panic signs
Opeth is the most harmonic, melodic, and demonic band of all time. They are the closest thing to perfection that exists in music, period( before Heritage).
Iluvurmomdubc dude..what if i say heritage is the deepest music composition on planet. Its just that it takes 2-3 years to get this fact
Iluvurmomdubc listen to heritage 10 times..you will realise same about that as well..its just that heritage and pale communion take more tries to digest..probably they are musically more deep
Hey now Pale Communion is amazing too
I really like socress but old opeth takes the cake for me
Old opeth and new opeth are both amazing
Demonic? Nothing about Opeth is demonic besides perhaps the brutal vocals.
0:25 Pest-ridden tacos from the hell
6:22 is the peak
9:42 is like crack cocain to me I fucking LOVE THIS PART. It's like a sweet respite And then when it goes back to the heavier part its so perfect og my god
BEST MADE TACOS OF THE EARTH
supereeeeeeeeeme
This one's definitely grown on me. Didn't quite click with me when I first listened to Ghost Reveries, but now I think it's one of the best on the album, if not the best.
Same here. One of my best friends recommended it to me. I listen to this often when I’m at the beach here in California
3:04 that transition is just epic like 6 bars of totally different riffs
Opeth has a lot of great songs, including several masterpieces. This one is still my favorite.
God this song still gives me goosebumps to this day, what a masterpiece.
second favorite from Reveries, just before Forest.
My favorite would Ghost Reveries
My second favorite would be Watershed
7:59 this part is soooo underrated, my favorite part
I'm going to say it.
In my opinion, best Opeth song.
