Hey you beautiful people just want to clarify something :) The point of this video is not to say you will never have use for a gimbal. There's definitely amazing uses for them that can enhance your film, just know that you can still make amazing films without one. PS: If you want to buy a new gimbal dont let me stop you, its all about intention and how you use it
I tried some shots without gymbal and without a rig, but men thats hard... jittery, cant see shit on my screen. Where 2 find a nice rig setup? Inc. A monitor. For a sony a 6600
I had the ronin s, sold it a few years back, and now just ordered the new rs3 pro, because I am going to be shooting cars, and my clients want the gimbal look. But I 100% agree with this message, Working for over a year WITHOUT a gimbal, I feel like I was able to learn the ins and outs of my camera, learn how to have steadier hands, and figure out how to get nice “raw” shots.
I thought the same thing and was telling my gf last night how much I hate social media anymore. Is a hard cycle to navigate through. Being the creators that aspiring filmmakers/photographers look up to get paid to do reviews on these new products. Making people think they have to buy that camera that has 50 megapixels or that gimbal that has raven eye. The truth is all of these are just tools to help you with your creativity. The best camera to have is the one you are shooting on cause that means you are actually creating something. Social media also robs everyone of creativity, being we all just copy each other. I started shooting with a handheld rig not long ago and prefer it over a gimbal any day. Way more organic. There is a time and a place for a gimbal and it just depends on your style. Brandon Li uses them all the time, but that contributes to his style. Get out there and start creating to find your own. Experiment with gear until you find what resonates with you. Gear doesn't make you creative, your mind does. Thanks for reading :)
I'm a recovering gimbal addict. At one point I owned five and barely even used them. Now I'm down to just two and I haven't used one of them in over a year or two, and the one I do 'use,' I have literally only used once this year. The filmmaking culture is so focused on the gear that we completely overlook what we're supposed to be doing with that gear.
Sound advice. We love using gimbals but everything you say is true. It also takes a bit of effort to 'learn' to shoot handheld after years of using a gimbal and defaulting to a certain pattern of filming. Different tools for different purposes.
I do feel gimbal is overused nowadays. And especially those with a lot motion combined with trasition. They look cool at first glance but will get dizzy. However I still think for most commercial, wedding. They prefer clean smooth gimbal type of shots. It also looks "professional" for consumer. But for film, documentary, travel video, I think organic handheld shots looks good.
This past weekend I filmed a 2 day event at the race track. My gimbal was out for repair so almost every shot I did was handheld. I didn’t find myself needing the gimbal once which is crazy to say cause I used to only use gimbals for everything! Point being there’s a lot of cool shots you can get without one and even simulate using handheld motion and tripods/monopods
Totally agree, all the gear are all tools and there is no one tool fits all, more important to understand the limits of what we have and maximize it and be creative - have fun in the process 😀🙏
Also it's hard to not get fomo when new Tech (Gimbals, Drones, Cameras etc.) get released. And almost every time when you still fall into this trap, you will realize that it actually does not make the huge difference you've expected. But in the end this is also part of the learning process/experience.
After buying a gimbal a few years ago, I found I didn't use it as much as my other support equipment or shooting handheld. I do find my cellphone gimbal more useful because it keeps my fingers off the lenses ... I use it basically as handle. I haven't planned on upgrading my old camera gimbal. It does fine when I do use it. Good show!
I was starting to feel like I need to buy a gimbal, but after watching your video it made me realise I don't need to get one just yet. I also enjoy that more handheld authentic look of travel videos. Thanks for the video!
So many good points my dude! Might add to smth you mentioned quickly: (Point 4): You Don´t need a new gimbal my dude. Just because it´s new and gadgety features doesn´t mean that it will actually get you better results. The promo footage from the RS3 still has the wobble issues, that I find on my RS 1. Yeah it can lock itself but that won´t change the footage at all :)
If your camera or lens have good enough stabilization (IBIS, OIS), or your software have good stabilization (gyro or plain software) then you will be better without a gimbal. Believe me, gimbals are a hassle, and working without gimbal is faster and easier and allow more movements, better manual focus, etc
Haha this was so spot on. I watched like 30 RS3 videos at launch thinking about how I now absolutely had to have it… meanwhile my RS2 sits on my desk completely unused… like I legit don’t think I’ve used It even once… and I still was lusting for the RS3… FOMO is wild. Anyways, love your channel man. Mine is very similar just nowhere near as successful 😂. Cheers
Honestly Eric floberg's wedding films made me realize that developing a style for your work. When you look at some of his recent weddings it's mostly handheld and I absolutely love it, I'm definitely gonna try shooting some weddings handheld. It makes you stand out from all the other wedding filmmakers imo. Cuz almost all of them have a gimbal
Thanks Sam, good as always. I'm tired of this kind of paid spam wave when some brand releases a new lens/gimball/camera and suddently this new item is the best thing ever (until there's a new release of course haha)
You don't need a UA-camr telling you what gear to use. UA-camr is all about views. The filmmaker is all about telling the story. So many hours of production were wasted to film behind the scene and show off how excellent, and professional you guys are. Creating this dream world for beginners. When in the end, it is a job. And as further you go this dreamland vanishes very fast because it's a hard job.
Ive been working hybrid for social media for 8 years now I bought a drone (sold it) bought a slider (never used it) and have never owned or used a gimbal. Oh bonus point 😆 Ive never shot a video in 4K (neither has a client asked for 4K). ... and yes I do make a living out of hydrid work as a graphic designer.
disclaimer: im about to get my first gimbal. and since you mentioned a drone - i got my drone 2 years ago and i used it three times. it feels so unfitting to my travel purposes and takes too much effort to even unpack it. And the stress even though i seem to have a natural talent for them. These new gimbals actually look pretty easy to use. So yeah, each to their own.
I've owned a gimbal for 2 years now and have used it for like 7% of my videos. Still got the Ronin S with a busted app but it does the job when I need it! I think it's important to have one, pending what you do, but I 100% agree like, you don't need to go get a new one if you already have one.
Dude, yes hell yes, I know and love that song, it means a lot to me!! I felt it deep the first time I heard it at a small/intimate festival, it was literally raining at the time (maybe why the dj put it on), and I distinctly recall making an anchor memory of those there, sharing that moment with other smiling dancing people, open to the rain, the physical feeing of being alive, feeling my feeling for me. But I didn’t hear much of the context of the rest of the lyrics to the song - fast forward several years, and it comes up on my Apple Music while goin’ for a emotionally-charged walk. I was like woah, and had to stop and sat on a rock and read thru all the lyrics while listening thru the song several more times and feelin’ it, opening up the parts of myself inside that were resonating… But I didn’t put 2 and 2 together and realize, ‘til this moment, that the songs in each of those memories are the same song!! Wow, fk’n epic. Legendary song “Unwritten” is haha! I totally agree :D
this video would have been great for me a yaer ago. I really wanted a gimbal, got one and after being super excited about it and trying it out, I know find myself not using a gimbal most of the time...
I agree with all of these points. I still do love my gimbal - but only when the shot calls for it! And I am perfectly happy with my Ronin-SC, no need for the latest.
This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. For a first impression it was great. The relaxed and calm feeling I got when watching was a nice take back from a lot of the other fast paced constant action vloggers. Also the color tuning you have looks great! Just thought I should give you my first thoughts. Can’t wait to watch more!
@SamNewton I absolutely love what you said in this video. Hope to see more stuff on how to think outside the box to not spend money on stuff we don't really need. Thanks for that!
You don't need a gimbal but you can use a drone which is more expensive also requires certifications. Or you can get an older generation gimbal on Amazon for free hundred. Did you watch the video before posting?
It depends on what someone would like to achieved, I wouldn't probably used handheld on a real state commercials though it would be so unprofessional and clients won't hire you anymore, but if for youtube video that doesn't require a standard feedback then go on, it would be lit.
agree, for mediocre tube who cares if you shots are wobbly, fuzzy, bad white balance, etc. That is "dope" what ever the F that means beyond lazy and piss poor quality
Great video, thanks! One thing that doesn't seem clear to me so maybe someone in the comments can help me! Like many photographers I'd like to experiment with video so I'm starting to get interested. If you don't shoot with a gimbal do you still need a certain type of equipment to hold your camera? Or do you just hold your camera in your hands?
Thanks for your video. Makes me wanna do more than I'm currently intending to. My interest is specifically filming Vr180, which probably needs smooth to avoid a motion sick audience
I've been rocking with a GH5 for years. The IBIS on it is soooooooo good that I legit don't even need a gimbal, save for shots that require that signature floaty gimbal look. Copped a Weebill S when it first dropped, and hardly ever used it. Sold that and got a Crane 3s on sale for the same price I paid for the Weebill S. A literal steal! I still don't really use the gimbal much still lol But my dude! I bet Natasha Bedingfield uses gimbals. Often, too. She seems like the cinema cam type, and they have no IBIS lol
Fucking yes. Thank you for posting this video Sam. You made me realize that I don't even use my Ronin RS2 at all, better to sell it and invest in something I might actually use!
So true., I've been rocking my OG Weebil for a long time now for all my real estate stuff, that's the only time I use it anyways. Works super well still
This is such a helpful video, it really cemented my thoughts on gimbals and that the proper use of gimbals is most important. I think for me (example) if i was making a hotel review video, i would use a gimbal or like you stated, a wedding event, but most of the time i just make basic videos around town or on vacation. Another thing too, is that shooting handheld helps me be more creative and challenges me to practice new shooting angles, stabilizing my body and finding shots from different perspectives. I like gimbals, but i like handheld a tad bit more! Thanks! 😀
love this man! Bought a brand new drone, 3 years later never and I mean NEVER NOT ONCE flew it! Bought a brand new Gimbal, two year later, my camera did not even touched it! My logic nowdays ... if you needed it, you would not have learned about it from an awesome UA-camr lol!!
I got a Sony A7iv and although mainly for photography have started experimenting with videography. I think the best advice if you want to experiment with gimbal is get it 2nd hand. I got DJI RSC2 very cheaply 2nd hand, it did smell like moth balls - but seemed "As new", and also got a cheap rig setup. For me I'm just comparing both approaches, what I think is important is both the gimbal/rig setup both need practice to master their use. i do think the more important, and harder thing that can't be solved by buying gear, is actually working out a creative project to start using them on. For me one of the best every examples I saw of not to go too far blaming your gear when world class violinist Ray Chen , who usually plays a multi-million dollar stradivarius, compared his strad with a $69 violin. Now the strad did sound better, but he made the $69 violin soun so damn good, that reminded any of us learning the instrument when we sound like crap, we really can't blame the instrument that much :)
i just bought a weebill s brand new, super discount price, all errors are now fixed, become a "LateAdopter" being a late adopter has its advantages, it serves me exactly the same as the newer model.
Disagree, gimbals are rad af. I shoot everything on it, if you're creative you can get all the shots you need and all the creative angles you need and make it look way slicker.
Crushed the video. & while your production has always been great, it has really evolved this past year or so - next level now my dude. 👌👌👌👌👌 Keep Killin it.
i do short movies, dance videos, music clips.. and i don't like to go full time gimbal, i like the handheld energy and freedom, also the tripod can help acieve awesome thangs, so gimbal is cool but it's sure you don't habe to buy every gimbals coming out x')
Something that people can do if they want more stable shots, is to just practice holding the camera steady. Think of it as a conscious yoga movement or martial art where you have a camera in your hand. My own experience has been that any image stabilized lens already does most of the work for you. Interestingly one practice from an entirely different discipline that helps develop the muscle memory for moving something smoothly, is how you dispense caulking from a caulking gun. It requires you to smoothly squeeze the trigger, while you simultaneously move the gun at the same time. I remember a time when I volunteered at a community access TV show, and got to use some high dollar broadcast TV cameras. You still needed a steady hand to pan and zoom at the same time. These are good skills to learn. It also doesn't hurt to develop some upper body strength, and practice moving heavy things in a careful precise manner.
Even at weddings, I've used the Ronin less and less as I go on. I feel like a lot of my most creative shots have been doing handheld, even with shots that would require more of a gimbal. I still use one when I need it, but for the most part, all of my stuff lately has been handheld.
Hi and good day, about gimbals, Months, days, from time to time I look hours and hours to find out which gimbal needed. Of course it has also to do with limited understanding about the technical and the used gears. Walking without shaking: Shaking by walking is disturbing, the ups and downs, the little vibration left or right etc. First, I’m older and start on the age 48 with cam and iPhone. Yes which gear I use? Today is used iPhone SE 2016 and 2020. Less the camcorder Panasonic HDC-SD90 which is decent but old dated, anno 2011. I have followed years the iPhone video and gear world. Separately from time to time DSLR or Mirrorless camera’s which I came across that to used such camera equipments is needed the understanding of the lenses that must be used. It was for me always a step to far. In the meanwhile is understand the use of wide angles, as wel not how to calculate the actual needed wide angle for the specific camcorder which has already inbuilt 28mm wide angle view. But by testing around is found out that the 0.7mm Wide Angle has the best results. It is not fully wide but good enough included using step up and CPL filters. The iPhone has also the best wide angle, XENVO 0.45 wide. Do I need gimbal 1?) I thought yes, how otherwise avoid schaking by walking? The topic is, the iPhone using the Woohoto holder which made able using external Tiny battery of 5000 mAh that is added with Velcro on the back of the iPhone. Besides external bat also eternal lapel or shotgun and above that an Video led light. This same for the camcorder HDC-SD90. Mic, lightening and external bat using on modular gimbal? All of this accessories most be added on the GIMBAL. The GIMBAL on his own most be preferred modular. Why modular gimbal? Because it must be possible to place the gimbal on the Rigg that is placed on an video tripod. Payload of the video half ball head tripod is 12 kg. The selfmade Rigg with accessories included camcorder weight is 7/- 8kg. Only 1 modular gimbal on the market?: There is only 1 gimbal found with an modular system, the Manfrotto MVG300XM. My situation, I know nobody that is able to explain this: as I’m technically not in to, (this question:) when the handgrip is separated and the gimbal is screwed on the Rigg. Important question: Then walking around with the Rigg hooked of from the tripod in the hand, is it überhaupt possible to set up the handgrip with the joystick buttons to get the gimbal on his self automatically working the tilt, pan, rolling etc? The videos reviews on UA-cam: For now I see only people in the reviews playing with the joystick to give instructions to the gimbal that is separately placed on an tripod. As I understand it doesn’t work automatically but only by support manually by using the joystick: It seem that it is not possible to find an gimbal to manually give instructions via the separate handgrip so that can be walking with the gimbal without shaking? The INKEE WARTHOG? Heard that the INKEE WARTHOG is probably an modular second option to use. Read it somewhere but didn’t find info about the modular possibility in UA-cam reviews. Your presentation, do we need? Seen your video presentation, well you use heavy professional cinema cameras. The weight of the camera probably helps avoid schaking? I think I need an gimbal but it seems that the gimbal I need is not actually on the market? In case you are able to understand my not schooling English I hope to get in return an answer and hope you have some advice. Best Luc
Just picked up my first gimbal. Could never justify the cost of one before, but with the new models coming out I picked up a last generation used one for cheap. Definitely get what your saying, but the thing is super cool to play around with 😂. Maybe I’ll get over the “newness” of it soon and put it on the shelf and go back to hand held, but for at least the next week or so EVERYTHING is getting filmed on the gimbal 🤣
I agree! I’m a videomaker and a photographer, everytime a take only pics I feel more free and creative. When I shoot video with a gimbal I feel little limitated. Someone wants my ex gimbal? Ronin s and Ronin s2?
I’m starting to think that I’m better off with using a lightweight tripod or monopod with legs than using a gimbal. I’m finding the DJI RS3 is much harder to control. I can also create motion effects in Final Cut Pro X.
My Dude, I bet Natasha Bedingfield uses gimbals. But seriously, thanks for the critical perspective on the tools. I have a first generation Zhiyun gimbal that does the trick for the about 1 time each year I need it.
Hey you beautiful people just want to clarify something :) The point of this video is not to say you will never have use for a gimbal. You missed cos these companies suk and provides no backwards compatibility.
Sam, we need the full version of the song with your cover 😅loved it and enjoyed it thoroughly! Stay 🍼!!!
noice. creamy.
tho sam you should probably pin the comment so everyone can see it

Thanks for the inspiring words. I'm just starting with photography/videography myself. Have a good one. :)
so where are your contents?
I don’t need a gimbal, but I do need you.
🙂🙂 hi
I need BOTH of you 🦀🦀
🙌 UA-cam DAD
@@georgemalczynski i need a cucumber. guys, how about that? :DD
I returned a gimbal I recently purchased, it was considered as lightweight 😅😅😅😅

Hahahahahah
The time to prepare the gimbal always make me miss some shots
Good recovery man. Soon we will have Gimbals Anonymous reunion
I was just about to buy a gimbal this week, now I have to rethink my whole life
Same 💀
hahahaha you can still get it :)
Haha, I just cancelled my gimbal order!
Sound advice. We love using gimbals but everything you say is true. It also takes a bit of effort to 'learn' to shoot handheld after years of using a gimbal and defaulting to a certain pattern of filming. Different tools for different purposes.
No Gimbals team ✌🏻✌🏻
My duuuude
Bro. My dude. The 'embargo' flood of product videos kills me. This was a refreshingly honest video and I appreciate it. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

i rather watch this than watch UA-camrs say sponsored lines
hahahahaha topical content boiiii
Best video posted regarding gimbals!!! 🙏🏼
100% feel your words
Still rock’n my Glidecam HD 2000. Glide cams do a great job and you never have to worry about batteries. Used ones are super cheap now.

Everyone talking about RS3 but DJI Transmission is the real 👀 opener

Great video, helped me deside, had to use gimbal many times in past never liked, never needed and your points helped me realized that
At the end of the day, it's all about using the right tool to get the shot to tell your story.
Yeeeeee of course!
Thank you for this 😅 one less gadget to carry in my travel bag 💁♀️

@SamNewton I absolutely love what you said in this video. Hope to see more stuff on how to think outside the box to not spend money on stuff we don't really need. Thanks for that!
Next Video: Why you NEED a gimbal
thanks mate, can actually feel this vid bringing back from being sucked into the hype. saving this for next I wanna succumb to the norm.

sam 2022 : I'm a filmmaker
Dude wtf - new viewer, instant subscriber. This is the shit I need in my life.
Rarely use a gimbal. Still use the same one from 2017 if needed. But RARELY. Handheld ftw.
I hate gimbals and I love your style! Keep it rocking!
Great video, thanks!
One thing that doesn't seem clear to me so maybe someone in the comments can help me!
Like many photographers I'd like to experiment with video so I'm starting to get interested. If you don't shoot with a gimbal do you still need a certain type of equipment to hold your camera? Or do you just hold your camera in your hands?
coming here from Tom Bucks video with Peter L about do you need to upgrade was a great shift.
Absolutely love those guys

Copped a Weebill S when it first dropped, and hardly ever used it. Sold that and got a Crane 3s on sale for the same price I paid for the Weebill S. A literal steal!
I still don't really use the gimbal much still lol
But my dude! I bet Natasha Bedingfield uses gimbals. Often, too. She seems like the cinema cam type, and they have no IBIS lol
i like the handheld shots but not every cam has global shutter, that rolling shutter is enough reason
Can't side follow a subject at 200mm hand held, I always had to do everything hand held but now I have 1k for the RS3 Pro I'll buy it 100%
Fucking yes. Thank you for posting this video Sam. You made me realize that I don't even use my Ronin RS2 at all, better to sell it and invest in something I might actually use!
So true., I've been rocking my OG Weebil for a long time now for all my real estate stuff, that's the only time I use it anyways. Works super well still
All about intention!
The vocals are immaculate my guy 😁
You had me singing that intro out loud man
Totally agree, bought the RS2 Pro last year and used it 2-3 times. I prefer shooting my A7SIII handheld in my rig.
Very true.
“B-fool broz, 🤣🤣🤣 Shots fired!
I like this guy. Subbed.
"GiMbAlMaNiA" that's a good one 😂
On of the best content creators ❤️🙏🏻
Damn! I just bought my friend Sam the newest gimbal, but now I have to return his surprise present.
Hahaha I’ll still take it
Disagree, gimbals are rad af. I shoot everything on it, if you're creative you can get all the shots you need and all the creative angles you need and make it look way slicker.
Great Idea man!!! Hope this video takes off for you. Love and hate the things. Also feel the pressure from the new release addiction.
OMG you're awesome! 😆 Love the intro - I found myself singing along with you.
cheers,
Crushed the video. & while your production has always been great, it has really evolved this past year or so - next level now my dude. 👌👌👌👌👌 Keep Killin it.
Speaking facts i always buy the older gimbals but on shoot days we don’t always use em !!!
I needed to hear this!
i do short movies, dance videos, music clips.. and i don't like to go full time gimbal, i like the handheld energy and freedom, also the tripod can help acieve awesome thangs, so gimbal is cool but it's sure you don't habe to buy every gimbals coming out x')
Best outro of 2022 👌🏼😂
Sorry for screaming
Loving the content my dude! What rig setup are you using?!
thank you sam!
Good points thx.👍
First video I seen of you, and the intro made me sub. Love that song 😆 Love the rest of the video too
Even at weddings, I've used the Ronin less and less as I go on. I feel like a lot of my most creative shots have been doing handheld, even with shots that would require more of a gimbal. I still use one when I need it, but for the most part, all of my stuff lately has been handheld.
thank you for this my dude, great point of view and killer singing 😆
I like how you can laugh at yourself. One eighteen!
Hi and good day, about gimbals, Months, days, from time to time I look hours and hours to find out which gimbal needed. Of course it has also to do with limited understanding about the technical and the used gears.
Walking without shaking:
Shaking by walking is disturbing, the ups and downs, the little vibration left or right etc.
Do I need gimbal 1?)
I thought yes, how otherwise avoid schaking by walking?
Only 1 modular gimbal on the market?:
There is only 1 gimbal found with an modular system, the Manfrotto MVG300XM. My situation, I know nobody that is able to explain this: as I’m technically not in to, (this question:) when the handgrip is separated and the gimbal is screwed on the Rigg.
Important question:
Then walking around with the Rigg hooked of from the tripod in the hand, is it überhaupt possible to set up the handgrip with the joystick buttons to get the gimbal on his self automatically working the tilt, pan, rolling etc?
The videos reviews on UA-cam:
For now I see only people in the reviews playing with the joystick to give instructions to the gimbal that is separately placed on an tripod.
As I understand it doesn’t work automatically but only by support manually by using the joystick:
It seem that it is not possible to find an gimbal to manually give instructions via the separate handgrip so that can be walking with the gimbal without shaking?
The man is on fire. 😂😂
Well put 😤
what's with the random frame at 1:18 xD
I agree! I’m a videomaker and a photographer, everytime a take only pics I feel more free and creative. When I shoot video with a gimbal I feel little limitated. Someone wants my ex gimbal? Ronin s and Ronin s2?
Excactly my dude!! Nailed it.
You have a point my friend, you have a point…
I’m starting to think that I’m better off with using a lightweight tripod or monopod with legs than using a gimbal. I’m finding the DJI RS3 is much harder to control. I can also create motion effects in Final Cut Pro X.
very informative as always Sam! love the youtube space.
best video for gimball and cb card ;) thanks
Sweet video man! Do you end up using Digital IS along with handheld a lot?
My Dude, I bet Natasha Bedingfield uses gimbals.
But seriously, thanks for the critical perspective on the tools. I have a first generation Zhiyun gimbal that does the trick for the about 1 time each year I need it.
