I do the chain around the boot on a piece of plywood on a small pallet thing. I play slow, dark, and eerie so it works for me.
I gave up the chain after I pulled a muscle in my leg one night!

Love the training but I notice what you're saying and what you're doing aren't the same thing. You said First string 1, skip over 2 & 3, Up stroke 2, down stroke 3 , Up stroke 4, repeat. You're picking First string 1, skipping 2 & 3, up stroke 2 - Skipping the first string, playing second and third string down 3, Up stroke 4. Now I know why yours sounded so much better that what I was hearing myself play.
You could even use your keys.
