Actually the need for cash has lessened a little since the Corona pandemic. Many small shops (bakery's and the like) have switched to electronic payment methods too. But at farmers markets or street food vendors cash is still king

The toilet entrance being like the subway doesn’t apply to Germany. We don’t have those gates in public transport 😊

Also don't be surprised if you see the full opposite in front of some restrooms. It might be there's a table with a plate on top. Usually the women who keeps the bathroom clean expect a lil 'thanks'. 50 cents to 1€ are recommend. After your business you put the coin at the plate, say thank you (if all is fine) and leave.

@@wakeupcall2665 By law in Germany you've to offer restrooms especially when you can take a seat and eating. The same along the Autobahn. The women I mentioned above, are pretty rare meanwhile. In shopping malls sometimes.
Watch out for the coupons. Most likely you're only able to charge it at this station😉

The cash culture still being relatively strong is based on a fairly recent switch from a small fee being added to any electronic payments from credit cards. NOTE: NOT debit cards. This was to cover the many people paying with credit card, then traveling back to their home country without sufficient account coverage. That changed relatively recently, at least to the minds of many Germans (roughly 15 to 20 years, AFAIK) so cash culture was king, where no additional fee was levied both against the store as well as the customer.
But since the pandemic this has changed drastically. Even so, it is still advisable to carry at least 50€ in cash with you at all times. Recently there were multiple days of problems with pay via credit or debit card due to severe dDOS attacks on multiple banking servers. In that case cash would be really handy to have.
The "no free water" issue in German restaurants can be explained pretty reasonably. The groceries in Germany are fairly cheap, yet still relatively high quality, both for the end customer, as well as restaurants. As such restaurants don't usually go for high percentage profits on the meal items, only roughly 5-8% surcharge on the gross retail price.
With food being so cheap and high quality at grocery stores the incentive to go out and eat at a restaurant is the convenience of being served ready cooked food, or the exceptionally well prepared meal. But it usually is not a combination of fairly cheap, convenient, and exceptionally well made at once. Restaurants simply can't charge so much more than the grocery store food.
So the main money maker for restaurants is drinks, which usually are surcharged by roughly 200-400%. Yes, 200-400% retail cost. Understandably the restaurants wouldn't be too happy to hand out drinks that slake your thirst for free. They WANT you to drink fairly expensive drinks to make them the money they need to survive. That includes bottled water, either still or sparkling.
So if you get asked "Mineralwasser?" be aware that this usually means sparkling water in Germany. While it literally simply means "Mineral water", it has changed its connotation to sparkling water more or less in the standard vernacular, even though there can also be still mineral waters as well. If you want non-sparkling water, ask for "Still, bitte" / "still, please". Little pronunciation tip: the "Still" is pronounced "Sh -till".
The idea of the waiter running off with your credit card is something that is SUUUUUPER-AWKWARD for Germans. I mean, once they run off they could take ALL of your credit card info from you, and pay online with that info. So Germans tend not to let anyone wander off with their credit card unsupervised. We are already a bit wary of the possibility going into debt with a credit card, and now we have someone running off with our card where we can't see them? Would you hand someone your card at a street vendor's, let them walk inside to swipe it for you there, and then come back out again?!?
Paying to use the bathroom: obviously not in a private home, nor in a restaurant that offers seating arrangements. The standard food truck or corner store vendor obviously won't have to offer it, and the restaurant also has to be a certain size (at least four table with seating for four people each) to mandate them to offer bathrooms (for free) to their customers.
BUUUUUUT: at highway rest stops there usually is a fee of between 50-70€-CENTS (not full Euros 😁) to enter through a turnstyle into the actual bathroom area. You will usually recieve a voucher for 50 cents value that can be redeemed at any of the stores of the same chain of rest-stops. There are two major rest-stop chains: Serways, and AXXE, with Serways being almost EVERYWHERE on Germany's highways. They usually offer good coffees, sodas and softdrinks, snacks, knicknacks and trinkets, sometimes an integrated BurgerKing or McDonald's, also Nordsee (which is something like the German fish'n'chips stores), and some other smaller restaurant styles as wells where you can redeem your voucher.
But on the plus side those bathrooms are exceptionally clean, non-smelly, well-lit, and -serviced. So ask yourself, is a price of 20 cents (after redeeming your voucher) too much to pay for a fairly pleasant trip to the loo?
But then there are also the train station bathrooms, and those are often still the very smelly, crowded, yucky bathrooms, and you still have to pay a bit. Those are a sore point for many Germans as well. Most people just cross their legs, wait for their train to arrive, and pee on the train toilets which are cleaned at least once a day before a train takes off. While not as clean as the Serways toilets, at least the usage of the on-board train toilets is included in the ticket. Note: this only applies to the Regional trains or longer distances, not on the S- or U-Bahn trains (more or less subways).

the kitchens in europe build in modular system and can be very expensive. standart stoves, fridges, dishwasher are all 60cm wide. the same with cupboards and cabinets, all in 30, 60, or 90cm. when you move to a new place you can rearrange the kitchen to the new place very easy and just replace the countertop when needed. in europe more ppl rent than buy homes. so the kitchen has to be movable in some way.

our highways are no playground for tourists. These make the whole thing dangerous for all of us. If you want to drive with us, you should find out beforehand. There is a "right-hand drive" on the Autobahn. It is forbidden to overtake in the right lane. We also have a lot of construction sites. There, traffic is usually routed over 3 narrower lanes. The width of the middle and left lane is usually limited to 2.10 meters. So, with mobile homes, or trailers, or vans drive on the right. The width always includes the exterior mirrors. Many SUVs are therefore only allowed to drive on the right in construction sites, which their drivers are often not interested in or do not understand. A worn outside mirror can easily cost 500 euros.

    One thing about the Autobahn.
Make sure guys, that you never run out of fuel when you drive on the Autobahn. It´s illegal. The fee is about 1000$.
We have enough gas-station along the Autobahn. Next thing used the right lane on the Autobahn only! The middle lane and the left lane is only for overtaking. The recommended speed on the Autobahn is 130kmh ( 81mph).
Restaurants.: Tips are in the price included. You can give a extra tip if you like or the service was excellent, but you don´t have to. The tips is around 10% like Feli says in the video.

Well, the fine for parking on the Autobahn, which is what you actually do without fuel, is 70,- Euro. However, if you cause an accident it may become much higher in addition to damage compensation.

    • @DSP16569
      @DSP16569 2 роки тому

In real it is strictly forbidden (because of safety reasons) to park on the Autobahn/Highway for no legitimate reason. Legimitate reasons are for example your car broke down or you have a medical emergency (start to feel sick and know that you are unable to drive your car anymore secuetly).
So if you can prrof that you run out of gas because a stone dammaged your gas tank and within a few minutes the gas leaked out of the car - Emergency case - no fine and totally legal.
But beeing "stupid" and ignoring the yelling "Gas empty refull" warning sound and the yellow low fuel sign for about 50mls is not an emergency it is pure ignorance.
By the way - except a few places on some highways (mostly close to cities where you can easy exit the highway, refull in the city (gas prices a lot cheaper than on the highways) and return to the highway) - you will have every 30 to 40 mls a gas station on german Autobahnen/highways.

I do like Feli's videos. Very informative.
Also, Sunday is a QUIET day. No loud music, no parties, no lawn mowing, no loud yard work, etc. People will call the police on those making loud noise on Sunday.
Yes, cash culture is still now, I believe. Bakeries have items for under €1.00. So if you get like 3-5 items that come out to under €4 or €5, they won't want to use a credit card machine for that. Also, LOTS of seasonal fruit and vegetable stands pop up from local farmers and they don't take credit cards.
    Gas is about €1.73 per LITER! 3.79 liters equals 1 GALLON. €1.99 x 3.79 liter = €6.56 gallon!!
I was about to cross the street in Berlin on a red light and an elderly woman kinda put her arm out and yelled at me saying, "Nein, nein..." and something in German that I took as a warning to not cross the street on a red light. No traffic at all but she waited until it turned green and so did I.
Many differences between German and American homes.

@@hyenalaughingmatter8103 Not true. While in Berlin, the next door neighbors had loud music playing on a Sunday next to my ex-gfs apartment. She told me about the Ruhezeit on Sundays. It wasn’t really bothering us since we were on the 3rd floor and it was coming from their back yard. Then we noticed flashing lights coming through the windows and saw a police car in the driveway next door. Someone must have called it in because the Polizei came and made them turn it off. I think the neighborhood had a lot of elderly people there who like the silence and did not appreciate these young people renting the duplex because of noise.

How old is this video? Regular gas has been removed 10 years ago. There are Diesel, Super, Super E10 and Super+. And it is like that at least since 2012. Are there really gas stations like shown in 06:12?
Also there is no "cash culture". Enabling customers to pay electronically used to be expensive and a major investment for businesses. This ended in 2020 when the pandemic forced the market to "restructure". Nowadays even my local bakery and the news paper seller next door accept all kinds of cards, even my phone.
